Physiology And Behavior Of The Jumbo Squid Dosidicus Gigas, Lloyd A. Trueblood Jan 2010

Physiology And Behavior Of The Jumbo Squid Dosidicus Gigas, Lloyd A. Trueblood

Open Access Dissertations

Dosidicus gigas is a large, epipelagic squid known to vertically migrate, spending night on the surface, and descending during the day into the oxygen minimum layer (OML). This dissertation seeks to examine physiological and behavioral adaptations of D. gigas to the environment in which it dwells. Life in the open ocean is unique in that there is little physical refuge. In order to capture prey in this environment, many pelagic fishes engage at high relative swimming speeds attempting to strike before being detected. This requires high metabolic rates and increasing anaerobic potential with increasing body size to overcome drag. I …

Developing Deep Understanding And Literacy While Addressing A Gender-Based Literacy Gap, Jianwei Zhang, Yanqing Sun, Marlene Scardamalia Jan 2010

Developing Deep Understanding And Literacy While Addressing A Gender-Based Literacy Gap, Jianwei Zhang, Yanqing Sun, Marlene Scardamalia

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

Online discourse from a class of 22 students (11 boys and 11 girls) was analysed to assess advances in conceptual understanding and literacy. The students worked over a two-‐year period (Grades 3-‐4), during which they contributed notes to an online Knowledge Building environment—Knowledge Forum®. Contributions revealed that both boys and girls produced a substantial amount of text and graphics, and that their written texts incorporated an increasing proportion of less-‐frequent, advanced words, including academic vocabulary and domain-‐specific words from grade levels higher than their own. Brief accounts of classroom discourse indicate how deep understanding and vocabulary growth mutually support each …

Knowledge Society Network: Toward A Dynamic, Sustained Network For Building Knowledge, Jianwei Zhang, Huang-Yao Hong, Marlene Scardamalia

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

The Knowledge Society Network (KSN) “takes advantage of new knowledge media to maximize and democratize society’s knowledge-‐creating capacity” (www.ikit.org/KSN). This article synthesizes the principles and designs of this network which were initiated over 15 years ago, and presents an exploratory study of interactions in the KSN over four years, elaborating different network structures and the potential of each for knowledge advancement. Four major sub-‐network structures for participant and idea interaction are described, as reflected in social network analysis of discourse in the KSN. Strengths and weaknesses of work within each sub-‐network were identified with suggestions for creating a more dynamic, …

Early Development Of Graphical Literacy Through Knowledge Building, Jianwei Zhang, Yongcheng Gan, Marlene Scardamalia, Huang-Yao Hong Jan 2010

Early Development Of Graphical Literacy Through Knowledge Building, Jianwei Zhang, Yongcheng Gan, Marlene Scardamalia, Huang-Yao Hong

Educational Theory and Practice Faculty Scholarship

This study examined growth in graphical literacy for students contributing to an online, multimedia, communal environment as they advanced their understanding of biology, history and optics. Their science and history studies started early in Grade 3 and continued to the end of Grade 4; students did not receive instruction in graphics production, nor were they required to produce graphics. Results show that students spontaneously produced graphics that advanced along seven dimensions, including effective representation of complex ideas, use of source information and captions, and aesthetic quality. On average, the scores for the seven dimensions were higher for Grade 4 students …

Yom Yhwh As A Biblical-Theological Theme, Robert Czarnitzki Jan 2010

Yom Yhwh As A Biblical-Theological Theme, Robert Czarnitzki

Master's Theses

Problem. Although it has been shown in recent studies on the topic that the "Day of YHWH" is to be understood not only as a collocation or concept, but as a motif-complex (a theme), the single theological motifs comprising the motif-complex have seemingly never been outlined in a systematic text-oriented study. -- Method. This thesis investigates which main theological motifs comprise the motif-complex of the "Day of YHWH" by means of a text-oriented study of the final text as existent today. It shall be asked whether the "Day of YHWH" is a true biblical-theological theme, that is, whether it is …

Catalytic Oxidative Desulfurization Of A Model Diesel, Dongxing Liu Jan 2010

Catalytic Oxidative Desulfurization Of A Model Diesel, Dongxing Liu

LSU Major Papers

An analysis of heterogeneous oxidation catalysts was performed to determine the activities and optimal operating conditions for the multiphase oxidative desulfurization (ODS) reactions, using a model diesel. Catalysts studied included well-characterized Pd on Al2O3 and activated carbon supports, and carbon-supported Mo2C and W2C, which were prepared by temperature programmed reaction. Several other typical oxidation catalysts were also examined. The model diesel consisted of ~1 wt% sulfur compounds (thiophene and dibenzothiophene) with appropriate amounts of aliphatic, alkylaromatic and N-heterocyclic compounds to simulate a raw number 2 diesel. With oxygen as the oxidant in ODS reactions of this model diesel (70-90ºC, 0.8-1.8 …

Characterization Of An Inductively Coupled Plasma Produced In Argon At 13.56 Mhz., Lim Ai Nuan Jan 2010

Characterization Of An Inductively Coupled Plasma Produced In Argon At 13.56 Mhz., Lim Ai Nuan

Student Works (2010-2019)

The electrical and plasma characteristics of radio frequency (13.56 MHz) inductively coupled argon plasma (RF ICP) were studied in this project. On the electrical breakdown properties, the breakdown voltage has a general appearance of Paschen’s curve and the minimum is achieved at 0.1 mbar. After ignition, two modes of discharge exist, namely, the E mode at low RF power and H mode at high RF power. Mode transition that occurs is accompanied by abrupt changes in both electrical and plasma characteristics. Hysteresis is observed in the mode transitions and has a minimum at 0.1 mbar. The resistance reflected into the …

Providing Real-World Experiences: The Virginia Tech Externship For Mathematics Specialists, B. Kreye, J. L. M. Wilkins

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

We describe the structure and implementation of the yearlong Externship experience associated with the Mathematics Specialist program at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech). We discuss the assignments and experiences included in the Externship, the alignment of those experiences with the job description developed by the Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition Task Force, and teacher comments on the effectiveness of their Externship experiences [1].
