Museum: The Beauty Of Lean, Timothy M. Stone Jan 2010

Museum: The Beauty Of Lean, Timothy M. Stone

Architecture Theses

Museums are universal institutions dedicated to the preservation of culture: This one will be located in the vicinity of downtown Fargo, North Dakota, with a approximate square footage of 38,000. Architectural design, through the most efficient and minimal use of materials, can be profound. An architecture that is sensitive to natural resources and habitats should be the determinate vehicle in the built environment. As architects, we must forever continue considering the expression of enriched architectural solutions to societal problems and reduce creating them.

Designing For The Senses, Nathaniel Gough Jan 2010

Designing For The Senses, Nathaniel Gough

Architecture Theses

The typology for this project will be a school for the blind. The blind and visually handicapped have the right to be able to navigate effortlessly through the built environment. It is our job as designers to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of everyone who uses our buildings; therefore, in designing we must consider everyone’s needs. A design that considers all the senses through which we gather information will undoubtedly be more holistic and complete than one that only considers sight. The narrative examines the importance of this project and discusses why we as designers need to focus on …

Refinementbased Verification Of Elastic Pipelined System With Early Evaluation, Yangwei Cai Jan 2010

Refinementbased Verification Of Elastic Pipelined System With Early Evaluation, Yangwei Cai

Electrical and Computer Engineering

This thesis presents a formal verification procedure to check correctness of the synchronous elastic pipelined system that incorporates early evaluation against its synchronous parent system. Note that the goal of the verification procedure is not to establish the correctness of the algorithm for synthesizing elastic circuits, but instead, to find bugs and formally prove the correctness of elasticized designs with early evaluation. Dataflow through elastic architectures is complicated by the insertion of any number of elastic buffers in any place in the design. Elastic token-flow diagrams are introduced, which are used to track the flow of data in elastic architectures. …

Hidden Lake Health & Wellness Retreat, Carrie Meyer Jan 2010

Hidden Lake Health & Wellness Retreat, Carrie Meyer

Architecture Theses

This thesis provides some answers to the question, does a design have the ability to promote health and wellness in our personal choices about the way we live? A healthy way of life is a personal choice determined by the individual and can be influenced by natural, environmental, and design factors. The typology for the examination of the problem is a healthcare facility and personal wellness retreat center. The Theoretical Premise/Unifying Idea that guides the research is, “the environment and its surroundings influence the choices made by individuals in the ways they live their lives.” The project will be located …

"A Dog In That Fight": The United States And The Yugoslav Wars Of Succession, 1991-1999., James M. Depalma Jan 2010

"A Dog In That Fight": The United States And The Yugoslav Wars Of Succession, 1991-1999., James M. Depalma

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

American leadership proved indispensable in resolving the Yugoslav wars of succession. Yet it would take time for the United States to accept the responsibilities of leadership. In 1991, the dissolution of Yugoslavia precipitated the wars of succession. The George H.W. Bush Administration permitted the European Community and the United Nations to direct international negotiations for the purpose of resolving the crisis. The Bush Administration's rationale was pragmatic in nature, represented by Secretary of State James Baker's infamous remark that the United States did not have "a dog in that fight. The Yugoslav wars of succession did not threaten vital American …

American Economic Development, Managerial Corporate Capitalism, And The Institutional Foundations Of The Modern Income Tax, Ajay K. Mehrotra Jan 2010

American Economic Development, Managerial Corporate Capitalism, And The Institutional Foundations Of The Modern Income Tax, Ajay K. Mehrotra

Law and Contemporary Problems

Mehrotra examines the factors contributing to the introduction of the corporate income tax in 1909 and of the individual income tax in 1913. According to the conventional wisdom, these taxes were the products of politics, political institutions, and social forces; economic factors play a cameo role in the standard historical accounts. He argues that economic developments were as significant as political and social factors in the enactment and development of the taxes. The corporations created the wealth that became the targets of the corporate and individual taxes. Here, he investigates two particular economic factors. First, he explores the broad, long-term, …

Gifts And The Income Tax—An Enduring Puzzle, Richard Schmalbeck Jan 2010

Gifts And The Income Tax—An Enduring Puzzle, Richard Schmalbeck

Law and Contemporary Problems

Schmalbeck explains that there are four policy options for the combined income tax treatment of a donor-donee pair, and that the best choice among the options is not self-evident. He notes that the current income tax treatment of noncharitable gifts originated with the 1913 income tax. The historical record provides no clues as to why Congress opted for that approach in 1913. As frustrating as this may be, it is an example of an important phenomenon in the development of the income tax. A number of crucial structural decisions made in the early days of the income tax, which continue …

The Fiscal Revolution And Taxation: The Rise Of Compensatory Taxation, 1929-1938, Joseph J. Thorndike Jan 2010

The Fiscal Revolution And Taxation: The Rise Of Compensatory Taxation, 1929-1938, Joseph J. Thorndike

Law and Contemporary Problems

Thorndike explores the Keynesian conversion of Treasury Department tax-policy experts during the 1930s. At the beginning of the Great Depression, he narrates that there was no political interest in using tax cuts to promote economic recovery. In fact, in 1932 Congress responded to the economic emergency by enacting a tax increase in the name of fiscal responsibility. By 1937, however, Treasury experts had become persuaded of the merits of countercyclical taxation. Ironically, the first legislative experiment in Keynesian taxation took the form of a tax increase--the short-lived 1937 tax on undistributed corporate profits, intended to stimulate the economy by discouraging …

The Rise And Fall Of Post—World War Ii Corporate Tax Reform, Steven A. Bank Jan 2010

The Rise And Fall Of Post—World War Ii Corporate Tax Reform, Steven A. Bank

Law and Contemporary Problems

The United States is unique in subjecting corporate income to two layers of tax. In what is called a "classical system," corporate income is taxed once at the entity level when earned and a second time at the individual level when distributed to shareholders in the form of a dividend. By contrast, in most other countries, corporate- and shareholder-level taxes are fully or partially integrated through some form of credit or deduction. America's double taxation of corporate income is a much-criticized but persistent feature of its current tax system despite numerous reform proposals over the last half-century or so. Here, …

Why The Eitc Doesn’T Make Work Pay, Anne L. Alstott Jan 2010

Why The Eitc Doesn’T Make Work Pay, Anne L. Alstott

Law and Contemporary Problems

Alstott offers an evaluation of the significance of the credit and, in a historical spirit, hark back to an earlier, critical perspective on the earned income tax credit (EITC)--a perspective rarely heard in recent years. She argues that these concerns remain apt, despite the expansion of the EITC and oft-repeated praise for its importance as an antipoverty program. Moreover, she highlights three features of U.S. law that constrain the effectiveness of the EITC in improving the wellbeing of low-income workers and their children: labor and employment laws that structure markets that produce low wages and harsh working conditions, laws that …
