Fabrication Of Three Dimensional Aligned Nanofiber Array, Vince Beachley, Xuejun Wen Nov 2010

Fabrication Of Three Dimensional Aligned Nanofiber Array, Vince Beachley, Xuejun Wen

Clemson Patents

Disclosed are methods of forming three dimensional arrays of aligned nanofibers in an open, loose structure of any desired depth. The arrays are formed according to an electrospinning process utilizing two parallel conducting plates to align the fibers and rotating tracks to distribute the fibers throughout the array. Arrays can be used as formed, for instance in tissue engineering applications as three dimensional scaffolding constructs. As-formed arrays can be combined with other materials to form a composite 3-D structure. For instance, composite polymeric materials can be electrospun to form composite nanofibers within the array. Multiple polymeric materials can be electrospun …

Fluorescent Carbon Nanoparticles, Ya-Ping Sun

Clemson Patents

Disclosed are photoluminescent particles. The particles include a core nano-sized particle of carbon and a passivation agent bound to the surface of the nanoparticle. The passivation agent can be, for instance, a polymeric material. The passivation agent can also be derivatized for particular applications. For example, the photoluminescent carbon nanoparticles can be derivatized to recognize and bind to a target material, for instance a biologically active material, a pollutant, or a surface receptor on a tissue or cell surface, such as in a tagging or staining protocol.

Web Page Design - Student-Community Collaborations, George Kontos Nov 2010

Web Page Design - Student-Community Collaborations, George Kontos

University College Business Division Faculty Publications

A collaborative project is described. Students in a web design class were asked to contact local businesses and help them create their web site (collection of related and interconnected web pages). Two phases of the project are described, planning and implementation. Planning defines the purpose and the target audience and also includes a sketch of the website's organization. The project is suitable for both traditional and online classes. Ideally, session participants should have some experience or interest in teaching web design but anyone who wants to know how to help students work collaboratively with the community is welcome to attend.

Mcgill Wetland Model: Evaluation Of A Peatland Carbon Simulator Developed For Global Assessments, F St. Hilaire, J Wu, Nigel T. Roulet, Steve Frolking, P M. Lafleur, E R. Humphreys, V Arora

Earth Sciences

We developed the McGill Wetland Model (MWM) based on the general structure of the Peatland Carbon Simulator (PCARS) and the Canadian Terrestrial Ecosystem Model. Three major changes were made to PCARS: (1) the light use efficiency model of photosynthesis was replaced with a biogeochemical description of photosynthesis; (2) the description of autotrophic respiration was changed to be consistent with the formulation of photosynthesis; and (3) the cohort, multilayer soil respiration model was changed to a simple one box peat decomposition model divided into an oxic and anoxic zones by an effective water table, and a one-year residence time litter pool. …

Effectiveness Of Compacted Fill And Rammed Aggregate Piers For Increasing Lateral Resistance Of Pile Foundations, Nathan A. Lemme Nov 2010

Effectiveness Of Compacted Fill And Rammed Aggregate Piers For Increasing Lateral Resistance Of Pile Foundations, Nathan A. Lemme

Theses and Dissertations

Compacted fill and rammed aggregate piers (RAPs) were separately installed adjacent to a 9-ft by 9-ft by 2.5-ft driven pile foundation founded in soft clay. The compacted fill used to laterally reinforce an area of 11 ft by 5 ft by 6 ft deep adjacent to the pile cap was clean concrete sand. The thirty-inch diameter RAPs were installed in three staggered rows to a depth of 12.5 ft below the ground surface adjacent to the pile cap to test the increase in lateral resistance afforded by their installation. The foundation was laterally loaded and load, displacement, and strain readings …
