Statistical Wear Leveling For Pcm: Protecting Against The Worst Case Without Hurting The Common Case, Hamza Bin Sohail Nov 2010

Statistical Wear Leveling For Pcm: Protecting Against The Worst Case Without Hurting The Common Case, Hamza Bin Sohail

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Phase change memory (PCM) is emerging as a lead alternative to DRAM due to its good combination of speed, density,
energy, and reliability. However, PCM can endure far fewer overwrites than DRAM before wearing out. PCM is susceptible to
malicious or accidental overwrites which can wear out a frame in a few hundreds of seconds. Previous papers have proposed to
randomize periodically the address-to-frame mapping in a memory region. Each randomization involves remapping the region’s
memory blocks which incurs significant write overhead. To guarantee reasonable worst-case lifetimes, the papers assume that
every write overwrites the same memory block and incur …

Standards × Patents ÷ Antitrust = ∞: The Inadequacy Of Antitrust To Address Patent Ambush, Jonathan Hillel Nov 2010

Standards × Patents ÷ Antitrust = ∞: The Inadequacy Of Antitrust To Address Patent Ambush, Jonathan Hillel

Duke Law & Technology Review

"Patent ambush" describes certain rent-seeking behavior by the owner of patent rights to a technology that is essential to an industry standard. Two cases, Qualcomm and Rambus, represent attempts of the Third and D.C. Circuits, respectively, to address patent ambushes using federal antitrust statutes. In both cases, antitrust law proves inadequate to the task. Under Qualcomm, licensees gain too much power to extort undervalued royalty rates from patent holders who have disclosed their rights during standard-setting. Under Rambus, coupled with the dearth of other options to combat patent ambushes, non-disclosing patent holders are given free reign over standardized markets, to …

Limitation Of Sales Warranties As An Alternative To Intellectual Property Rights: An Empirical Analysis Of Iphone Warranties’ Deterrent Impact On Consumers, Marc L. Roark Nov 2010

Limitation Of Sales Warranties As An Alternative To Intellectual Property Rights: An Empirical Analysis Of Iphone Warranties’ Deterrent Impact On Consumers, Marc L. Roark

Duke Law & Technology Review

Apple's success with the Apple iPhone has brought with it certain problems. Its success has engendered a community that has attempted to circumvent Apple's exclusive service agreement with AT&T. Unfortunately for Apple (and similarly situated manufacturers), intellectual property law allows consumers to alter their products so as to circumvent relationships that manufacturers may have with others. The patent and copyright law first sale doctrine allows consumers to manipulate a product after it is purchased. As a result, manufacturers are increasingly turning to alternatives to intellectual property to secure control over the device after the sale. One such alternative is the …

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The rising temperature of the world's oceans has become a major threat to coral reefs globally as the severity and frequency of mass coral bleaching and mortality events increase. In 2005, high ocean temperatures in the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean resulted in the most severe bleaching event ever recorded in the basin. Methodology/Principal Findings: Satellite-based tools provided warnings for coral reef managers and scientists, guiding both the iming and location of researchers' field observations as anomalously warm conditions developed and spread across the greater Caribbean region from June to October 2005. Field surveys of bleaching and mortality exceeded prior efforts …

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background. The gut is a major reservoir for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in patients receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART). We hypothesized that distinct immune environments within the gut may support varying levels of HIV.

Methods. In 8 HIV-1-positive adults who were receiving ART and had CD4+ T cell counts of >200 cells/μL and plasma viral loads of <40 copies/mL, levels of HIV and T cell activation were measured in blood samples and endoscopic biopsy specimens from the duodenum, ileum, ascending colon, and rectum.

Results. HIV DNA and RNA levels per CD4+ T cell were higher in all 4 gut sites compared with those in the blood. HIV DNA levels increased from the duodenum to the rectum, whereas the median HIV …

Reading Holiness: Agnes Grey, Ælfric, And The Augustinian Hermeneutic, Jessica Caroline Brown Nov 2010

Reading Holiness: Agnes Grey, Ælfric, And The Augustinian Hermeneutic, Jessica Caroline Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Although Anne Brontë's first novel, Agnes Grey, presents itself as a didactic treatise, Brontë's work departs from many accepted Evangelical tropes in the portrayal of its moral protagonist. These departures create an exemplary figure whose flaws potentially subvert the novel's didactic purposes. The character of Agnes is not necessarily meant to be directly emulated, yet Brontë's governess is presented as a tool of moral instruction. The conflict between the novel's self-proclaimed didactic purpose and the form in which it presents that purpose raises a number of interpretive questions. I argue that many of these questions can be answered through …

Differences In Personality Factors And College Major Choice, Jennifer Smith Nov 2010

Differences In Personality Factors And College Major Choice, Jennifer Smith

Theses

The transition from secondary education to post-secondary education is stressful for all students. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA 2004) only mandates transition plans for students receiving special education services. Career assessments and transition services should encourage career exploration which requires students to have knowledge about oneself and the world of work. When career assessments provide students with this information, they may be more informed on what major to choose. The purpose of this study was to look at group differences among college majors and their personality factors as measured by the Sixteen Personality Questionnaire, 5th Edition (16PF-5). …

Biparental Mucus Feeding: A Unique Example Of Parental Care In An Amazonian Cichlid., Jonathan Buckley, Richard J. Maunder, Andrew Foey, Janet Pearce, Adalberto L. Val, Katherine A. Sloman Nov 2010

Biparental Mucus Feeding: A Unique Example Of Parental Care In An Amazonian Cichlid., Jonathan Buckley, Richard J. Maunder, Andrew Foey, Janet Pearce, Adalberto L. Val, Katherine A. Sloman

School of Biomedical Sciences

Vertebrates display a wide variety of parental care behaviours, including the guarding of offspring pre and post nutritional independence as well as the direct provision of nutrients during the early development period. The Amazonian cichlid Symphysodon spp. (discus fish) is unusual among fish species, in that both parents provide offspring with mucus secretions to feed from after hatching. This extensive provision of care, which can last up to a month, imposes a physiological demand on both parents and gives rise to conflict between the parent and offspring. Here, we investigated the relationship between parents and offspring during a breeding cycle, …

Vibrationally Promoted Electron Emission At A Metal Surface: Electron Kinetic Energy Distributions, Jerry L. Larue, Tim Schäfer, Daniel Matsiev, Luis Velarde, N. Hendrick Nahler, Daniel J. Auerbach, Alec M. Wodtke

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

We report the first direct measurement of the kinetic energy of exoelectrons produced by collisions of vibrationally excited molecules with a low work function metal surface exhibiting electron excitations of 64% (most probable) and 95% (maximum) of the initial vibrational energy. This remarkable efficiency for vibrational-to-electronic energy transfer is in good agreement with previous results suggesting the coupling of multiple vibrational quanta to a single electron.

Microstructural Evolution During Fatigue Of Ultrafine Grained Aluminum Alloy, P. S. De, Rajiv S. Mishra Nov 2010

Microstructural Evolution During Fatigue Of Ultrafine Grained Aluminum Alloy, P. S. De, Rajiv S. Mishra

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A comparative study of the surface microstructural changes during fatigue of a precipitation hardened (PH) aluminum alloy in ultrafine grained (UFG) and microcrystalline conditions was done using orientation imaging microscopy (OIM). with increase in applied stress amplitude, the fatigue life of fine-grained PH alloy deteriorated. on the other hand, at lower stress amplitudes an improvement in fatigue life was noted. This trend was reversed for the coarse-grained PH alloy. in UFG alloy, the fatigue life improved at all stress amplitudes. the variation in fatigue life response between coarse, fine and ultrafine grain PH alloy was due to the increased interaction …

Cortical Thickness Or Grey Matter Volume? The Importance Of Selecting The Phenotype For Imaging Genetics Studies, Anderson M. Winkler, Peter Kochunov, John Blangero, Laura Almasy, Karl Zilles, Peter T. Fox, Ravi Duggirala, David C. Glahn Nov 2010

Cortical Thickness Or Grey Matter Volume? The Importance Of Selecting The Phenotype For Imaging Genetics Studies, Anderson M. Winkler, Peter Kochunov, John Blangero, Laura Almasy, Karl Zilles, Peter T. Fox, Ravi Duggirala, David C. Glahn

School of Medicine Publications

Choosing the appropriate neuroimaging phenotype is critical to successfully identify genes that influence brain structure or function. While neuroimaging methods provide numerous potential phenotypes, their role for imaging genetics studies is unclear. Here we examine the relationship between brain volume, grey matter volume, cortical thickness and surface area, from a genetic standpoint. Four hundred and eighty-six individuals from randomly ascertained extended pedigrees with high-quality T1-weighted neuroanatomic MRI images participated in the study. Surface-based and voxel-based representations of brain structure were derived, using automated methods, and these measurements were analysed using a variance-components method to identify the heritability of these traits …

Assessing Intercultural Experience: Differences In Biculturalism, Intercultural Sensitivity, And Cognitive Flexibility Among Latino Immigrants, Christine Christmas

Masters Theses

This study examined first generation immigrants, defined as those who were born in a Latin American country and moved to the U.S. after the age of 12, and second generation immigrants, defined as those who were born in the U.S. or moved here before the age of 12. Literature in the field of cross-cultural adaptation suggests that intercultural communication competence tends to be further developed as a result of intercultural adaptation. The intent of this research was to test this assertion. Data was collected by way of survey administration on a sample of 216 Latino immigrants representing both first and …

Digital Dog Shelter Application, Taryn Bzdick Nov 2010

Digital Dog Shelter Application, Taryn Bzdick

Theses

Pet overpopulation has been a major issue for a long time. Hundreds of thousands of dogs are in shelters all over the country who desperately need homes. When looking up these dogs on shelter web sites it is common to find a small blurb and a low quality photograph in a poorly designed environment about a dog in need of a home. Most of the time these postings are not informative enough to help the potential owner make an educated decision in choosing the right dog for them. Dogs in these shelters would have significantly higher chances of being adopted …

Design, Synthesis & Biological Activity Of Novel Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (Ptp) Mimetics, Sridhar Reddy Kaulagari Nov 2010

Design, Synthesis & Biological Activity Of Novel Protein Tyrosine Phosphatase (Ptp) Mimetics, Sridhar Reddy Kaulagari

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Protein phosphorylation is a post translational modification of proteins in which a serine, a threonine or a tyrosine residue is phosphorylated by an enzyme, kinase. Phosphorylation of proteins is a reversible and very important regulatory mechanism that occurs in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Phosphorylation turns many protein enzymes on and off, preventing or causing many diseases such as diabetes, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. The phosphorylation on tyrosine residues of proteins is essential for transmission of signals for cell growth, proliferation and differentiation. Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) in concert with protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs) regulate many signal transduction pathways by controlling …

Comparative Study Of Intentional Communities, Jessica Merrick Nov 2010

Comparative Study Of Intentional Communities, Jessica Merrick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Moving to Florida to retire has become commonplace among American elders, though we have seldom addressed how lesbians and gay men navigate sexual identity in retirement. I undertake ethnography of three suburban, retirement-aged residential communities in Florida in which lesbians and gay men make community in order to understand how identities are produced by and within communities, the significance of suburban gay communities in the post-gay community era, and how residents from each community engage dominant discourse. Sanctuary Cove

1 is a ―gay and lesbian‖ retirement community; Bayside Park is a ―women‘s-only‖ (lesbian) community; and Heritage Estates is a heteronormative …

Chromatin Unfolding By Cdt1 Regulates Mcm Loading Via Opposing Functions Of Hbo1 And Hdac11-Geminin, Philip G. Wong Nov 2010

Chromatin Unfolding By Cdt1 Regulates Mcm Loading Via Opposing Functions Of Hbo1 And Hdac11-Geminin, Philip G. Wong

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The efficiency of metazoan origins of DNA replication is known to be enhanced

by histone acetylation near origins. Although this correlates with increased MCM

recruitment, the mechanism by which such acetylation regulates MCM loading is

unknown. We show here that Cdt1 induces large-scale chromatin decondensation that is

required for MCM recruitment. This process occurs in G1, is suppressed by Geminin, and

requires HBO1 HAT activity and histone H4 modifications. HDAC11, which binds Cdt1

and replication origins during S-phase, potently inhibits Cdt1-induced chromatin

unfolding and re-replication, suppresses MCM loading, and binds Cdt1 more efficiently

in the presence of Geminin. We also …
