Applying Copyright Abandonment In The Digital Age, Matthew W. Turetzky Nov 2010

Applying Copyright Abandonment In The Digital Age, Matthew W. Turetzky

Duke Law & Technology Review

Copyright law protects orphan and parented works equally--but it shouldn't. Consequently, current law unnecessarily restrains public access to works that authors have not exercised dominion over for decades. This problem has come to the fore in the Google Books settlement, which critics argue will give Google a de facto monopoly over orphan works. But this criticism implicates an obvious question: Why are orphan works protected by copyright law in the first place? If orphan works were in the public domain, then no one would worry about Google's supposed "monopoly" because Google's competitors would be free to copy the works without …

Extracting Structural Vegetation Components From Small-Footprint Waveform Lidar Data In Savanna Ecosystems, Joseph Mcglinchy Nov 2010

Extracting Structural Vegetation Components From Small-Footprint Waveform Lidar Data In Savanna Ecosystems, Joseph Mcglinchy

Theses

Research groups at Rochester Institute of Technology and Carnegie Institution for Science are focusing on characterization of savanna ecosystems using data collected from the Carnegie Airborne Observatory (CAO), which integrates high spatial resolution imaging spectroscopy and waveform light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data. This component of the larger RIT ecosystem project evaluated the extraction of waveform features from the small-footprint waveform LiDAR data and their ability to explain structural variation across differing land cover types by way of bare ground cover, woody, and herbaceous biomass estimation. The combination of nanosecond digitization of the backscattered signal and fine spatial resolution allowed …

Drosophila Vitelline Membrane Assembly: A Critical Role For An Evolutionarily Conserved Cysteine In The “Vm Domain” Of Sv23, T. Wu, Anita L. Manogaran, J. M. Beauchamp, Gail L. Waring

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The vitelline membrane (VM), the oocyte proximal layer of the Drosophila eggshell, contains four major proteins (VMPs) that possess a highly conserved “VM domain” which includes three precisely spaced, evolutionarily conserved, cysteines (CX7CX8C). Focusing on sV23, this study showed that the three cysteines are not functionally equivalent. While substitution mutations at the first (C123S) or third (C140S) cysteines were tolerated, females with a substitution at the second position (C131S) were sterile. Fractionation studies showed that sV23 incorporates into a large disulfide linked network well after its secretion ceases, suggesting that post-depositional mechanisms are in place to …

[Fe-Fe]-Hydrogenase Reactivated By Residue Mutations As Bridging Carbonyl Rearranges: A Qm/Mm Study, Stefan Motiu, Valentin Gogonea Nov 2010

[Fe-Fe]-Hydrogenase Reactivated By Residue Mutations As Bridging Carbonyl Rearranges: A Qm/Mm Study, Stefan Motiu, Valentin Gogonea

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In this work, we found aqueous enzyme phase reaction pathways for the reactivation of the exogenously inhibited [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenases by O2, or OH−, which metabolizes to H2O (Dogaru et al., Int J Quantum Chem 2008, 108; Motiu et al., Int J Quantum Chem 2007, 107, 1248). We used the hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method to study the reactivation pathways of the exogenously inhibited enzyme matrix. The ONIOM calculations performed on the enzyme agree with experimental results (Liu et al., J Am Chem Soc 2002, 124, 5175), that is, wild-type [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenase H-cluster is inhibited by oxygen metabolites. An enzyme spherical region …

Queening: Chess And Women In Medieval And Renaissance France, Regina L. O'Shea Nov 2010

Queening: Chess And Women In Medieval And Renaissance France, Regina L. O'Shea

Theses and Dissertations

This work explores the correlation between the game of chess and social conditions for women in both medieval and Renaissance France. Beginning with an introduction to the importance and symbolism of the game in European society and the teaching of the game to European nobility, this study theorizes how chess relates to gender politics in early modern France and how the game's evolution reflects the changing role of women. I propose that modifications to increase the directional and quantitative abilities of the Queen piece made at the close of the fifteenth century reflect changing attitudes towards women of the period, …

Electromyographic Analysis Of The Infraspinatus And Deltoid Muscles During Shoulder External Rotation Exercises With And Without A Towel Roll, Kazuto Sakita Nov 2010

Electromyographic Analysis Of The Infraspinatus And Deltoid Muscles During Shoulder External Rotation Exercises With And Without A Towel Roll, Kazuto Sakita

Theses and Dissertations

Standing and sidelying external rotation exercises produce high activation of the deltoid and infraspinatus. Holding a towel roll under the arm at 30° shoulder abduction during these exercises may decrease deltoid activity and increase infraspinatus activity. The objective was to determine if the addition of a towel under the arm during standing and sidelying external rotation affects EMG activity of the infraspinatus, middle and posterior deltoid, and pectoralis major, compared to the no towel condition. 20 male volunteers (age; 26 ± 3, height; 1.80 m ± .07 m, weight; 77 kg ± 10 kg) had right dominant hand, bilaterally healthy …

Sexuality Curriculum Policies: Rural Is Not Always More Conservative, Susan Roberts-Dobie, Mary E. Losch, Danielle Vsetecka, Andrew Morse Nov 2010

Sexuality Curriculum Policies: Rural Is Not Always More Conservative, Susan Roberts-Dobie, Mary E. Losch, Danielle Vsetecka, Andrew Morse

The Rural Educator

This study examined sexuality education policies of school districts following the enactment of a law by the state of Iowa in 2007 requiring schools to include curriculum related to human growth and development education. The authors compared responses from superintendents in rural and urban areas in the state of Iowa regarding their districts’ sexuality curriculum policies. All public school superintendents in Iowa (n=364) were mailed a survey; 131 (36%) responded. The sample was representative of the state both geographically and by size of district. Findings indicate that while rural states (or more-rural areas within rural states) may be publically perceived …

Teammates: Providing Emotional And Academic Support In Rural Schools, Jody C. Isernhagen Nov 2010

Teammates: Providing Emotional And Academic Support In Rural Schools, Jody C. Isernhagen

The Rural Educator

Numerous studies have found that mentoring has a positive effect on students who participate in it. Mentorship for students in rural communities is both necessary and challenging given the uphill battle these schools and communities face to improve their students’ academic achievement and emotional well-being. Through examining teacher, parent, and student perceptions of the TeamMates Mentoring Program in a rural Nebraska district, this study concluded that TeamMates is providing necessary social and emotional support to its mentees in rural schools, as well as encouraging them to improve their grades. However, TeamMates must continue to heighten its support of low-achieving students …

Coman, Matthew H. Gnirke, Frank A. Middleton, Kevin M. Antshel, Wanda Fremont, Anne Marie Higgins, Robert J. Shprintzen, Wendy R. Kates

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

Velo-cardio-facial syndrome (VCFS) is caused by a micro-deletion of over 40 genes at the q11.2 locus of chromosome 22 and is a risk factor for the development of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. COMT, one of the genes located in the deleted region, has been considered as a major candidate gene for genetic susceptibility in psychiatric diseases. Its functional polymorphism Val108/158Met has been shown to affect prefrontal function and working memory and has been associated with emotional dysregulation. We utilized a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) event-related paradigm to asses COMT genotype and gender-moderated effects on the neural activation that …
