The 'Goldilocks Hypothesis' : A Political Ecology Of The Land-Sparing/Wildlife-Friendly Farming Debate, M. Jahi Chappell Nov 2010

The 'Goldilocks Hypothesis' : A Political Ecology Of The Land-Sparing/Wildlife-Friendly Farming Debate, M. Jahi Chappell

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Proposals for biodiversity conservation as related to the dominant form of human land use, agriculture, have broadly coalesced around two paradigms: "Land sparing" and "Wildlife-friendly farming." Neither paradigm is sufficiently grounded in the more complex socioeconomic realities of the food system with regards to another paramount problem of our time: widespread malnutrition. However, the "land sparing" paradigm's simplistic approach to food, policy, and ecosystem dynamics is arguably more egregiously out of sync with current knowledge. The talk will present a conceptual view of food systems, hunger, and biodiversity conservation, with the goal of generating discussion on how to systematically integrate …

We report specific heat (C) and magnetization (M) of single crystalline Ce4 Pt12 Sn25 at temperature down to ∼50 mK and in fields up to 3 T. C/T exhibits a sharp anomaly at 180 mK, with a large ΔC/T∼30 J/molCe K2, which, together with the corresponding cusplike magnetization anomaly, indicates an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state with a Néel temperature TN =180 mK. Numerical calculations based on a Heisenberg model reproduce both zero-field C and M data, thus placing Ce 4 Pt12 Sn25 in the weak exchange coupling J< Jc limit of the Doniach diagram, with a very small Kondo scale TK TN. Magnetic field suppresses the AFM state at H⊃ ≈0.7 T, much more effectively than expected from the Heisenberg model, indicating additional effects possibly due to frustration or residual Kondo screening. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Hawking Radiation By Kerr Black Holes And Conformal Symmetry, Ivan Agullo, José Navarro-Salas, Gonzalo J. Olmo, Leonard Parker Nov 2010

Hawking Radiation By Kerr Black Holes And Conformal Symmetry, Ivan Agullo, José Navarro-Salas, Gonzalo J. Olmo, Leonard Parker

Faculty Publications

The exponential blueshift associated with the event horizon of a black hole makes conformal symmetry play a fundamental role in accounting for its thermal properties. Using a derivation based on two-point functions, we show that the full spectrum of thermal radiation of scalar particles by Kerr black holes can be explicitly derived on the basis of a conformal symmetry arising in the wave equation near the horizon. The simplicity of our approach emphasizes the depth of the connection between conformal symmetry and black hole radiance. © 2010 The American Physical Society.

Systematic Approach To Electrostatically Induced 2d Crystallization Of Nanoparticles At Liquid Interfaces, Sumit Kewalramani, Suntao Wang, Yuan Lin, Huong Giang Nguyen, Qian Wang, Masafumi Fukuto, Lin Yang Nov 2010

Systematic Approach To Electrostatically Induced 2d Crystallization Of Nanoparticles At Liquid Interfaces, Sumit Kewalramani, Suntao Wang, Yuan Lin, Huong Giang Nguyen, Qian Wang, Masafumi Fukuto, Lin Yang

Faculty Publications

We report an experimental demonstration of a strategy for inducing two-dimensional (2D)crystallization of charged nanoparticles on oppositely charged fluid interfaces. This strategy aims to maximize the interfacial adsorption of nanoparticles, and hence their lateral packing density, by utilizing a combination of weakly charged particles and a high surface charge density on the planar interface. In order to test this approach, we investigated the assembly of cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) on positively charged lipid monolayers at the aqueous solution surface, by means of in situX-ray scattering measurements at the liquid–vapor interface. Theassembly was studied as a function of the solution …

A Survey Of Utah Spanish Teachers Regarding The Instruction Of Heritage Language Students Of Spanish, Sara Lynn Wilkinson Nov 2010

A Survey Of Utah Spanish Teachers Regarding The Instruction Of Heritage Language Students Of Spanish, Sara Lynn Wilkinson

Theses and Dissertations

It is imperative that educators understand the current state of heritage language education because many locations have experienced large increases in their heritage language populations in recent years. This study reports on the findings of a statewide survey of secondary Spanish teachers in Utah regarding the instruction of Spanish heritage language students. Their perspectives give insight into Spanish Heritage Language (SHL) education in both traditional Spanish foreign language and heritage language classes. The information gathered describes the availability of specialized courses, the prevalence of SHL students in Spanish classes, and these students' backgrounds. It also describes the characteristics of Spanish …

Attitudes Of Health Professionals To Electronic Data Sharing Within An Integrated Care Electronic Health Record (Icehr), Charyl O'Malley, Damon Berry, Mary Sharp

Conference Papers

It is estimated that 98,000 people die in hospitals yearly in the USA as a result of medical errors (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2009). Electronic Health Records (EHR) can offer improved patient safety. EHRs are being implemented by many countries, however, not all health professionals have welcomed them (MORI Social Research Institute, 2006). As outlined in the National Health Information Strategy (NHIS) document, Ireland has plans to introduce an EHR. Attitudes of health professionals are a significant factor for the successful implementation and adoption of a new clinical information system. This study aimed to gauge the attitude of …

Shelf Edge Tide Correlated Eddies Along The Southeastern United States, Dana K. Savidge, Jonathan Norman, Colton Smith, Julie A. Amft, Trent Moore, Catherine Edwards, George Voulgaris

Faculty Publications

High frequency radar observations in the Southeastern United States have revealed sequences of small short‐lived cyclonic eddies along the shoreward edge of the Gulf Stream, that spin up as the local tide turns alongshelf antiparallel to the Stream. Eddies propagate equatorward along the shelf edge, sometimes progressing shoreward before dissipating one to three hours later. They are distinctly different from Gulf Stream meander eddies, which propagate poleward. In this article, radar and mooring data are used to establish three important aspects of these neweddies: they represent an instability process operating at a previously unidentified frequency, scale, and cross‐Stream position; they …

Does Changing Ownership Change Crime? An Analysis Of Apartment Ownership And Crime In Cincinnati, Troy C. Payne

Presentations

This Powerpoint slide presentation examines the question of changes in level of crime when ownership of an apartment building changes. Examination of data from Cincinnati, Ohio, shows that ownership change, size of apartment complex, and past crime all have some effect on crime counts. In particular, when the apartments that are sold are high-crime apartments, change in ownership tends to worsen the crime problem.

How Widespread Is Oil And Electricity Theft In Latin America?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Last month, a ruptured pipeline in northern Colombia spilled 20,000 gallons of fuel into the Caribbean Sea and created a localized environmental emergency. Authorities allege that the spill was caused by a failed criminal attempt to siphon oil from the pipeline. How big of a problem is the theft of oil, fuels and electricity in Latin American and Caribbean countries? In which countries is the situation most critical? What types of entities are behind the theft, and what policies and practices should be implemented to stop this type of criminal activity?
