Bulging Factors In Geometrically Nonlinear Cracked Laminated Shell Structure Under Dynamic Internal Pressure, Nitin B. Ingale

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This thesis is about the investigation of the geometrically nonlinear responses and bulging factors of cracked laminated composite cylindrical shell structures subjected to internal pressure. Hybrid strain based three-node flat triangular shell elements, developed by To and Wang were used.

Effects of dynamic responses of various numbers of layers and their angle arrangements of cracked cylindrical shell structures clamped at both ends are analyzed and studied. Bulging factors based on the concept of equivalent Young’s modulus of elasticity are found and compared with single and multiple layer composite cylindrical shell structures.

Finally, bulging factors for similar laminated composite cylindrical shells …

Intrinsic Features Of The Multisensory Cortical Area Lrss In The Ferret, Alexandru Ioan Cojanu Nov 2010

Intrinsic Features Of The Multisensory Cortical Area Lrss In The Ferret, Alexandru Ioan Cojanu

Theses and Dissertations

Environmental events simultaneously transduced by more than one sensory modality underlie multisensory processing in the CNS. While most studies of multisensory processing examine functional effects, none have evaluated the influence of local or columnar circuitry. The goal of the present study is to examine of local features of the ferret lateral rostral suprasylvian sulcus (LRSS), a multisensory cortex. Immunostaining revealed the cytoarchitectonic features of the LRSS: thick supragranular layers, a narrow layer IV, and moderately stained but differentiated infragranular layers. Golgi-Cox techniques were used with light microscopy and digital reconstruction to document neuronal morphology. Among the 90 reconstructed neurons, 4 …

Humphry Davy: Science, Authorship, And The Changing Romantic, Marianne Lind Baker Nov 2010

Humphry Davy: Science, Authorship, And The Changing Romantic, Marianne Lind Baker

Theses and Dissertations

In the mid to late 1700s, men of letters became more and more interested in the natural world. From studies in astronomy to biology, chemistry, and medicine, these "philosophers" pioneered what would become our current scientific categories. While the significance of their contributions to these fields has been widely appreciated historically, the interconnection between these men and their literary counterparts has not. A study of the "Romantic man of science" reveals how much that figure has in common with the traditional "Romantic" literary figure embodied by poets like William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This thesis interrogates connections between Romantic …

On Line: The Pledging Experiences Of Members Of Black Greek-Lettered Organizations From 1970 To 1990, Antonio Dewan Jenkins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In 1990, the leadership of the Black Greek-Lettered organizations that comprise the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) agreed to ban pledging as the official member entry process for new members. For 20 years (1990-2010), each organization has developed and used a membership intake process (MIP) to replace pledging in order to prevent hazing and injury to prospective members. Studies on membership entry into these organizations have focused mainly on fraternities during the MIP era (1990-2010) and the persistence of hazing during their process. This study explored the experiences of men and women who joined BGLOs prior to the 1990 ban on …

Mothers Against Democracy: Hebe De Bonafini's Rhetorical Strategies Of Resistance, 1988-2003, Shirley J. Oakley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Madres de Plaza de Mayo was once a small group of grieving mothers in Buenos Aires who sought solace during a dictatorship that began in 1976. As their resistance developed, they grew into a social and political organization whose purpose is to keep the memory of their children alive and to generate justice in Argentina and worldwide. Their leader, Hebe de Bonafini, is atypical because there was no oratorical tradition for her to follow: she created one. Throughout the thirty-four years of the mothers' movement's existence, Bonafini's rhetoric has changed and has taken a new shape. The permanent disappearance …

Detecting Cartels: Price Rigidity And The Application Of The Icss Algorithm, Ping-Ying Cheng Nov 2010

Detecting Cartels: Price Rigidity And The Application Of The Icss Algorithm, Ping-Ying Cheng

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This paper proposes that the Iterative Cumulative Sums of Squares (ICSS) Algorithm can be applied to help better detect periods of collusive behavior in markets by analyzing changes in the variance of product prices over time. Price rigidity is a common characteristic of oligopolies and has been theoretically proven in many studies. The kinked-demand-curve explains that firms would prefer to stay at the agreed upon monopoly price rather than cutting prices to earn more market share during a single period. An infinitely repeated Bertrand game model developed by Athey, Bagwell, and Sanchirico (2004) claims that if the firms are sufficiently …

Corticosterone Secretion In Young Florida Scrub-Jays: Correlates And Consequences, Michelle Annette Rensel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While much is known about the relationship between stress and the steroid hormone, corticosterone (CORT) in adult animals, less is known about the dynamics of CORT secretion in developing animals. My research examined factors affecting levels of baseline and stress-induced CORT in a free-living, non-migratory passerine, the Florida scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens). I addressed the following questions: 1) Do baseline and stress-induced CORTsecretion change with age? 2) Are nestling baseline CORT levels correlated with conditions in the nest, such as hatching order and parental behavior? 3) Are baseline and stress-induced CORT levels repeatable wtihin individuals? 4) Do baseline and stress-induced CORTlevels …

Seismic Performance Of Square Rc Bridge Columns Under Combined Loading Including Torsion With Low Shear, Q. Li, Abdeldjelil Belarbi, S. S. Prakash

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

During earthquake excitations, reinforced concrete bridge columns can be subjected to a combination of axial load, shear force, flexural moments, and torsional moments. the torsional moment can be much more significant in columns of bridges that are skewed, curved, have unequal spans, or unequal column heights. Combined loading including torsion can result in complex flexural and shear failure of these bridge columns. This paper presents an experimental study on the seismic behavior of square reinforced concrete columns under combined cyclic flexural and torsional moments. the columns in this study were designed with an aspect ratio of six and tested under …
