Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Affinity Screening Methods For Functional Annotation Of Proteins And Drug Discovery, Matthew D. Shortridge Nov 2010

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Affinity Screening Methods For Functional Annotation Of Proteins And Drug Discovery, Matthew D. Shortridge

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

With nearly 1,350 complete genome sequences available our understanding of biology at the molecular level has never been more complete. A consequence of these sequencing projects was the discovery of large functionally unannotated segments of each genome. The genes (and proteins they encode) found in these unannotated regions are considered “hypothetical proteins”. Current estimates suggest between 12%-50% of the known gene sequences are functionally unannotated. Incomplete functional annotation of the various genomes significantly limits our understanding of biology. Pragmatically, identifying the functions of these proteins could lead to new therapeutics; making functional annotation of paramount importance.

This dissertation describes the …

Stability, Integration And Political Modalities: Some American Reflections On The European Project After The Financial Crisis, David A. Westbrook Nov 2010

Stability, Integration And Political Modalities: Some American Reflections On The European Project After The Financial Crisis, David A. Westbrook

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 22 in Making Transnational Law Work in the Global Economy: Essays in Honour of Detlev Vagts, Pieter H. F. Bekker, Rudolf Dolzer & Michael Waibel, eds.

To those of us concerned with transnational law, and especially the role of German law on the global stage, it does not need saying that Professor Detlev Vagts is highly deserving of that Germanic and traditional scholarly honour, a Festchrift. (In this context, ‘does not need saying’ of course means ‘should be said repeatedly’.) We all owe Detlev Vagts, and as a Germanic traditionalist, I would be delighted to contribute to …

Garden Grove, Iowa: From Mormon Way Station To Permanent Settlement, 1846-1852, Jill N. Crandell Nov 2010

Garden Grove, Iowa: From Mormon Way Station To Permanent Settlement, 1846-1852, Jill N. Crandell

Theses and Dissertations

When the Mormon people began evacuating Nauvoo, Illinois, in February 1846, they intended to leave the United States and build a home for themselves in the West, where they could practice their religion without persecution. However, as Brigham Young led thousands through severe rain and mud that spring, he soon decided that too many of the Saints were unprepared for the long journey to the mountains. Mormons built way stations across Iowa, places where they planted crops, raised log cabins, and obtained the necessary food and supplies. After the Saints moved on to Utah in following years, many of these …

Conditions Associated With Clostridium Sporogenes Growth As A Surrogate For Clostridium Botulinum In Non-Thermally Processed Canned Butter, Reed H. Taylor Nov 2010

Conditions Associated With Clostridium Sporogenes Growth As A Surrogate For Clostridium Botulinum In Non-Thermally Processed Canned Butter, Reed H. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Shelf-stable canned butter is currently available in retail stores, and many home-preservationists promote home-canning of butter. Non-cultured butter is a low-acid canned food, which would presumably require thermal processing. The lack of a thermal process step in canned butter products raises questions of potential safety, because they are hermetically sealed and generally exhibit anaerobic growth conditions, which are optimal for Clostridium botulinum growth. Without thermal processing, low-acid canned foods (LACF) must have inhibitory factors present to prevent C. botulinum growth. Some potential intrinsic inhibitory factors, or "hurdles", within butter include: reduced water activity (aw), acidity (pH) in cultured products, elevated …

Throwing The Baby Out With The Bathwater: When Can We Trust Self Report With The Smi Inpatient Population?, Jeffrey A. Lee Nov 2010

Throwing The Baby Out With The Bathwater: When Can We Trust Self Report With The Smi Inpatient Population?, Jeffrey A. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Reliability of self-report outcome assessment is often called into question with the severely mentally ill population. In the context of inpatient care, demand characteristics may further complicate self-report measures. Although clinician-completed outcome measures, such as the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale-Expanded Version (BPRS-E), have become industry standard with this population, self-report assessment may be useful under certain conditions. This study sought to explore the relationship between a clinician-completed, the BPRS-E, and a self-completed measure, the SOQ, within the SMI inpatient population. A total of 357 adult participants with a minimum of three assessment iterations were analyzed. The results of the analysis …

The Decision Making Process Of Informal Caregivers Of Dementia Family Members Regarding Nursing Home Placement, Rebecca Merritt Nov 2010

The Decision Making Process Of Informal Caregivers Of Dementia Family Members Regarding Nursing Home Placement, Rebecca Merritt

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to understand the decision making process of caregivers placing their elderly family members in a nursing home facility. Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) was used, as well as the Critical Incident Technique (CIT). ELT was utilized in an effort to understand the learning that took place during the caregiving experiences, and CIT was used to better understand the critical incidents that led the caregivers to seek nursing home placement. A sample of twelve former informal dementia caregivers between the ages of fifty-seven and eighty-seven was drawn from the metropolitan Richmond, Virginia area. In-depth interviews were …

Perceptions Of Teachers Regarding The Importance And Existence Of Researched-Based Program Characteristics In Alternative High Schools And Teacher’S Perceptions Of Efficacy In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Robert Lowerre Nov 2010

Perceptions Of Teachers Regarding The Importance And Existence Of Researched-Based Program Characteristics In Alternative High Schools And Teacher’S Perceptions Of Efficacy In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Robert Lowerre

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine teachers’ perceptions of the degree to which research-based characteristics exist in alternative high schools and programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the importance of these characteristics to effective education. In addition, this research investigated whether or not these perceptions were related to the teachers’ perception of efficacy. These seven characteristics were (a) clearly identified enrollment criteria, (b) low ratio of student to teachers, (c) one-to-one interactions between staff and students, (d) social skills instruction, (e) effective academic instruction, (f) parental involvement and parental support programs, and (g) specific training for teachers …

Translated Opinions

Facts: The respondent was convicted of various crimes and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1996, after which he was given additional sentences for crimes committed while on leave from jail. In 2004, he applied to the then-President of the State, Moshe Katzav, to reduce the duration of his sentence. Although the Minister of Justice at the time (Tzipi Livni) recommended that the application be denied, the President signed a letter limiting the respondent’s sentence to 32 years. The Minister of Justice refused to countersign the document approving the reduced sentence, as did other Ministers of Justice who served after …
