Hydrologic Soil Grouping Determination For Appalachian Minesoils, Anthony Willard
Hydrologic Soil Grouping Determination For Appalachian Minesoils, Anthony Willard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The hydrologic soil group refers to the infiltration potential of the soil after prolonged wetting. This classification system separates soils into four hydrologic groups (A, B, C, and D), based upon the intake and transmission of water under conditions of maximum yearly wetness. Group A has the lowest runoff potential and D the highest. Several soil properties are used to determine the hydrologic soil groupings. In the study of the hydrologic soil nature, soil properties that affect infiltration, such as bulk density, porosity and texture, should be considered. Associated factors that affect infiltration in the field are slope and vegetation. …
Subsurface Stratigraphy And Petrophysical Analysis Of The Middle Devonian Interval, Including The Marcellus Shale, Of The Central Appalachian Basin; Northwestern Pennsylvania, Anne Yanni
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the central Appalachian basin, the multiple organic-rich intervals of the Middle Devonian, including the Marcellus Shale, are an emerging large resource play with high economic potential (estimated 1,307 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas). This resource play was evaluated by examining the patterns of organic-richness, lithology, stratigraphic distribution, and other depositional characteristics. Using logs from wells throughout northwestern Pennsylvania (940 wells) integrated with core data, the subsurface lithostratigraphic boundaries were defined and correlated for the Marcellus and associated units throughout the study area.;Past studies of the Middle Devonian interval have not rigorously defined the lithostratigraphic boundaries in the subsurface …
Development And Evolution Of Higher Brain Centers In Insects, Xiangyi Zhao
Development And Evolution Of Higher Brain Centers In Insects, Xiangyi Zhao
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Brain structures within an individual can change during development through modification of individual neuron morphology together with alteration of neuron numbers. Differences in the same or analogous brain structures from different species can reflect behavioral pattern variation among these species fixed by natural selection. This study used insects from two different taxonomic groups to address such brain structure changes at these two time scales: developmental and evolutionary. Mushroom bodies, as an integrative sensory center involved in learning and memory in insects, were the main structure surveyed to illustrate changes in higher brain centers in both projects. In the developmental study, …
Mechanisms Of Tungsten Carbide-Cobalt Nanoparticle-Induced Angiogenesis, Yingxue Zhu
Mechanisms Of Tungsten Carbide-Cobalt Nanoparticle-Induced Angiogenesis, Yingxue Zhu
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Hard metal or cemented carbide consists of a powder mixture of 80 to 90% of tungsten carbide (WC) and 5 to 10% of metallic cobalt (Co). Nanoparticles are engineered structures with one dimension of at least 100 nanometers or smaller. The small size results in properties that may be substantially different from particles of the same composition in the micrometer scale. It has been demonstrated that the inhalation of hard metal particles may cause an interstitial pulmonary disease and lung cancer, the mechanism of which involves an interaction between Co and WC particles, the generation of reactive oxygen species, and …
Three Essays On Caps Market And Unspanned Volatility, Harumi Hattori
Three Essays On Caps Market And Unspanned Volatility, Harumi Hattori
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this thesis we study the caps market. Caps are a contract where the interest rates are capped at some fixed value r¯. Caps consist of caplets which are European options on the forward rates called LIBOR (the London Inter-Bank Offer Rates). Caps are the derivatives of LIBOR. However, their relation is not so simple as the relation between a stock and its derivatives. One important difference is that the volatility in one market does not affect the volatility of the other market as much as in the stock and its derivative markets. This phenomenon is termed unspanned stochastic volatility …

Three Essays On The Foreign Exchange And Equity Returns, Alina F. Klein
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation contains three essays dealing with current issues in the foreign exchange and equity exchange markets. The first essay observes that both markets display behaviors akin to momentum and mean reversion. This essay implements a trading strategy combining mean reversion and momentum in foreign exchange markets. The strategy was originally designed for equity markets, but it also generates abnormal returns when applied to uncovered interest parity deviations for five countries. I find that the pattern for the positions thus created in the foreign exchange markets is qualitatively similar to that found in the equity markets. Quantitatively, this strategy performs …

Mandatory Reporting In The Context Of Home Visitation Programs, Danielle Marie Davidov
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Each year in the United States, 4.8 million physical assaults and rapes are committed against 1.5 million women by an intimate partner. An estimated 3.3 to 10 million children are exposed to some form of intimate partner violence (IPV) in their own homes annually. Although mandatory reporting laws regarding child abuse and/or neglect are implemented in all 50 U.S. states, the extent to which these laws are appropriate for IPV between adults and children exposed to IPV is undetermined. A comprehensive examination of the perspectives of those required to report abuse is critical, as their roles as mandated reporters often …

Pulsar Populations In The Galaxy And Magellanic Clouds, Joshua P. Ridley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Pulsars are great tools for studying the Universe. From energetics to radio emission, many of the properties of pulsars can be used to understand other physical phenomena occurring throughout the Universe today. This dissertation examines pulsars and their properties through the use of computer simulations, describes the basic pulsar search procedure, and presents the results of a search for millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and fast radio transients in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC).;Using Monte Carlo simulations, a working model of normal pulsars that accurately represents the observed population was created. These simulations allow for changes to be made to the initial …
High Rank Tensor And Spherical Harmonic Models For Diffusion Mri Processing, Inas A. Yassine
High Rank Tensor And Spherical Harmonic Models For Diffusion Mri Processing, Inas A. Yassine
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a non-invasive quantitative method of characterizing tissue micro-structure. Diffusion imaging attempts to characterize the manner by which the water molecules within a particular location move within a given amount of time. Measurement of the diffusion tensor (D) within a voxel allows a macroscopic voxel-averaged description of fiber structure, orientation and fully quantitative evaluation of the microstructural features of healthy and diseased tissue.;The rank two tensor model is incapable of resolving multiple fiber orientations within an individual voxel. This shortcoming of single tensor model stems from the fact that the tensor possesses only a single orientational …

Sub-Surface Stratigraphy And Petrophysical Analysis Of The Middle Devonian Interval Of The Central Appalachian Basin; West Virginia And Southwest Pennsylvania, Matthew Louis Boyce
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In the central Appalachian basin, the Middle Devonian organic-rich shale interval, including the Marcellus Shale, is an important target for natural gas exploration. It has emerged as a giant unconventional resource play due to aerial extent and potential for individual wells to produce large volumes of gas. The Marcellus Shale is well studied on the surface without the incorporation of the subsurface stratigraphy. However, to fully understand the Marcellus economic potential it is important to investigate and map the related Middle Devonian sub-surface stratigraphic units. The interval studied includes the Onondaga Limestone (Eifelian), Marcellus Shale (Eifelian), Purcell Limestone (Eifelian), Mahantango …
Correlating Simulated Surface Marks With Near-Surface Tornado Structure, Michael I. Zimmerman
Correlating Simulated Surface Marks With Near-Surface Tornado Structure, Michael I. Zimmerman
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Tornadoes often leave behind patterns of debris deposition, or "surface marks", which provide a direct signature of their near surface winds. The intent of this thesis is to investigate what can be learned about near-surface tornado structure and intensity through the properties of surface marks generated by simulated, debris-laden tornadoes. Earlier work showed through numerical simulations that the tornado's structure and intensity is highly sensitive to properties of the near-surface flow and can change rapidly in time for some conditions. The strongest winds often occur within tens of meters of the surface where the threat to human life and property …
Pathophysiology And Clinical Implications Of Lower Respiratory Tract Infection (Lrti) With Respiratory Enteric Orphan Virus (Reovirus): Background And Experimental Evidence, Maret E. Bernard
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background. Respiratory viral infection early in life is a predominant factor in the inception of episodic wheezing and development of asthma amongst young children [1] and a serious health challenge. Previous studies of lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in animal models have indicated that early life viral exposure results in dysregulated neuroimmune interactions and altered synthesis/release of pro-inflammatory neuropeptides generating increased airway reactivity and neurogenic-inflammation. Similar to RSV, respiratory enteric orphan virus (Reovirus) is a common respiratory pathogen associated with pulmonary infections in children. Also, reovirus pulmonary infection has been shown to induce increased collagen …

Teacher And Administrator Perceptions Of Technology Use In Two West Virginia Middle Schools, Carrie E. Marcum
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The "digital natives" that are sitting in today's classrooms live their lives surrounded by technology. "The current crop of learners differs in significant ways from previous generations because, unlike their predecessors, they have literally grown up 'digital'" (Simpson & Clem, 2008, p. 2). Teachers and administrators often struggle to keep up with the technological world that students are used to. This mixed-methods study included West Virginia teachers and administrators from two middle schools. Teachers and administrators at the two schools were given surveys that addressed the following: frequency of technology use for personal and professional use, confidence level with various …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Drawing of glass fibers is an important industrial process used for manufacture of a variety of materials ranging from optical communications cables to fiber filter media. A variety of machines exist for performing the drawing function, but all share similar problems with control of the fiber diameters and breakage of the fibers during the extrusion process. In many cases, control systems are not configured to monitor the most critical process variables-- temperature of molten glass in the furnace, but instead use only furnace crown temperature. Upsets in disturbance variables such as ambient temperature are compensated manually by operators, usually only …

Computational Fluid Dynamic Studies Of Chemical Looping Combustion Systems, Kartikeya Krishnaji Mahalatkar
Computational Fluid Dynamic Studies Of Chemical Looping Combustion Systems, Kartikeya Krishnaji Mahalatkar
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Responsible carbon management will be required for the future utilization of fossil fuels for power generation. One technology that is showing tremendous potential for carbon capture is the chemical looping combustion (CLC). CLC involves combustion of fuels by heterogeneous chemical reactions with an oxygen carrier, usually a granular metal oxide, exchanged between two fluidized beds. In any regular combustion process the oxidizer for the fuel is air which essentially is a mixture of oxygen and nitrogen. This results in a flue gas stream which consists of primarily of relatively dilute CO 2 (15 -- 20%), mixed with steam and nitrogen. …

Dynamic Src Tyrosine Kinase Signaling Directs Invadopodia Formation And Function In Head And Neck Cancer: Novel Insights Into The Original Oncogene, Laura Catherine Kelley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Cancer cell invasion and motility is mediated through actin-rich protrusions that facilitate migration through extracellular matrix and degradation of tissue barriers. Src tyrosine kinase is an essential catalyst of motile actin networks and is a potent mediator of the metastatic program. The Src substrate cortactin is a critical scaffold that links kinase signaling to cytoskeletal dynamics. Both Src and cortactin are overexpressed in several human cancers and their expression is associated with poor prognosis. These proteins are not associated with the initiation of tumorigenesis, but are thought to play a vital role in the metastatic process. The overall aim of …

Where Independence Meets Its Match: The Intersection Of Musical Identity, Record Promotion And College Radio Programming, Aaron J. Hawley
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
College Radio has long been championed for being one of the last independent voices on a radio dial dominated by corporate for-profit stations. While corporate stations program their playlists towards whatever is on the charts, independent programming has long been part of the appeal of college radio. However, college radio music directors are in constant contact with record promoters whose sole goal is to get their clients' records played on-air. While a notion of independence is central to college radio's musical identity, these record promoters hold a great deal of power in the decision making process. Upon investigation at WVU …

Cantor Fractal Linear Antenna Array With Koch Fractal Elements, Refat Talib, Mohannad Ahmad
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
Cantor fractal linear array, with ‘101’ generator from second stage of growth, is analyzed here with two types of current amplitude excitation coefficients (Dolph and Fractal). The Koch fractaldipole element with 2nd iteration and θ=60o will be used here as the array elements. Kaiser-Bessel window will be used as the generating function, to calculate the fractal amplitude excitation coefficients. The benefit from using fractal antenna element in the design of fractal antenna array will be clearly deduced from the results. The radiation pattern and impedance were calculated by using software package MATLAB version 7.6 (R2008a) and software package 4NEC2 respectively.
Positively Invariant Sets In Sliding Mode Control Theory With Application To Servo Actuator System With Friction, Shibly Ahmed
Positively Invariant Sets In Sliding Mode Control Theory With Application To Servo Actuator System With Friction, Shibly Ahmed
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
In this paper two invariant sets are derived for a second order nonlinear affine system using a sliding mode controller. If the state started in these sets, it will not leave it for all future time. The invariant set is found function to the initial condition only, from which the state bound is estimated and used when determining the gain of the sliding mode controller. This step overcomes an arithmetic difficulty that consists of calculating suitable controller gain value that ensures the attractiveness of the switching manifold. Also, by using a differentiable form for the approximate signum function in sliding …

Aggregation Is One Of The Challenges In Learning Probabilistic Relational Models, Saleh M., Jane Jaleel Stephan, Lamia Abed Noor
Aggregation Is One Of The Challenges In Learning Probabilistic Relational Models, Saleh M., Jane Jaleel Stephan, Lamia Abed Noor
Iraqi Journal of Computers, Communications, Control and Systems Engineering
Aggregation is a tool used in presenting the multiple instances of an individual attribute in a single value that characterizes the groups represented. However, probabilistic relational models are constructed from relational data base; these data are interrelated with different cardinalities so it is needed for aggregation in some situations in order to convert the relation cardinality from “many” to “one”. This paper will shed light on the role of aggregation in learning probabilistic relational models through presenting two aggregate functions one is conventional and the other is proposed and compare their effects on the produced models. The results produced from …
