The Sense Of The City: Politics And Culture In Pre-Revolutionary New York City, Luke John Feder
The Sense Of The City: Politics And Culture In Pre-Revolutionary New York City, Luke John Feder
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation explores how political partisanship and local understandings of British political culture shaped New York City's reaction to the revolutionary crisis of the 1760s and 1770s. I investigate how the Livingston faction, DeLancey faction, and Sons of Liberty each attempted to define and manipulate"the sense of the city" to suit its private agenda. In the eighteenth century,"the sense of the city" and other similar phrases stood for public opinion. For this study, however, I push the term beyond public opinion and also use it to unpack how New Yorkers made and unmade the practices, rules, rituals, and symbols that …
I. Discovery And Optimization Of 2,5,6- Trisubstituted Benzimidazole Leads For Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Ii. Resynthesis Of Hit 2,5,7- Trisubstituted Benzimidazole Final Compounds, Lucy Li
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Tuberculosis affects one-third of the world's population and is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Due to the rise of multi-drug resistant strains of the bacteria, a new antibiotic needs to be developed. FtsZ, a tubulin homologue, plays an essential role in bacterial cell division therefore making it a novel anti-microbial target in drug resistant strains of Mtb. Previous works from our laboratory have shown that a number of 2,5,6- and 2,5,7-trisubstituted benzimidazoles possess significant activity against Mtb by interfering with filamental temperature sensitive protein Z (FtsZ) polymerization. Libraries of novel trisubstituted benzimidazoles were created through rational design. Based …
Variational Kinematic Geometry For Task Centered Design Of Mechanisms And Robotic Systems, Jun Wu
Variational Kinematic Geometry For Task Centered Design Of Mechanisms And Robotic Systems, Jun Wu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation deals with the problem of task centered design of mechanisms and robotic systems via novel concept of variational kinematic geometry. The results can be extended to other field such as biomechanics, structure chemistry and protein kinematics, as well as micro- and nano- systems, in which kinematics playsan important roles. Since the early days of Industrial Revolution, machine theorists and kinematicians have sought to develop a theory to analyze and synthesize mechanisms so that engineers could approach the problem in a rational way. This dissertation introduces a task-centered approach to mechanism design using a constraint basedparadigm, and conducts a …
Microstructure Investigation Of Thermoelectric Materials, Juan Zhou
Microstructure Investigation Of Thermoelectric Materials, Juan Zhou
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Thermoelectric materials can convert heat directly into electricity and hence may play an important role in the future of energy conversion. In the last decade, the performance of thermoelectric materials has been enhanced substantially. Most of the progress is obtained through a control of the microstructure of a material. Especially, nanometer scale substructures present in the materials are thought to play a critical role for the significant reduction of lattice thermal conductivity and enhancement of figure of merit. A comprehensive understanding of the role of the micro- and nano- scale structural features on the electron and phonon transport would facilitate …
Assessing The Nature Of Rip Currents Along The South Shore Of Long Island, Ny: Dominant Rip Type And Insights Into Possible Forcing Mechanisms, Michael Patrick Slattery
Assessing The Nature Of Rip Currents Along The South Shore Of Long Island, Ny: Dominant Rip Type And Insights Into Possible Forcing Mechanisms, Michael Patrick Slattery
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The south shore of Long Island experiences periodic rip currents that pose a human threat as well as generate scientific intrigue. To address the type of rip currents present along Long Island's south shore, an integrated monitoring system that includes use of beach cameras, the SWAN wave model, and seismic recording stations was implemented. The original site was in East Hampton, NY in a private residence while a second camera was established in the Fire Island lighthouse and a second seismic station was placed in the Maidstone club (also in East Hampton, NY). Statistics from camera observations indicate that rip …

A Study On Access Control, Trusted Languages, Constraints And Types Of An Ehr System., Hiep Minh Nguyen Vuong
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Cassandra is a role-based trust management language that utilizes Datalog with constraints to materialize security policies. A policy is a set of rules that can create and maintain roles, control users' access and manage different sets of information. With the help of Cassandra, the list of rules for NHS electronic health record system is constructed with readability. However, due to lack of real data and implementation, people cannot test and put their trust on the line. Patients often reject the ideas of sharing their information via a system if they cannot manage their own data. Doctors, on the other hand, …

Ultrasonographic Diagnosis Of Placenta Accreta, Shaista Afza, Imrana Masroor, Gulnaz Shafqat
Ultrasonographic Diagnosis Of Placenta Accreta, Shaista Afza, Imrana Masroor, Gulnaz Shafqat
Department of Radiology
Placenta accreta is the abnormal adherence of placenta to myometrium due to defect in decidua basalis. This type of placenta could not remove manually after delivery and lead to severe hemorrhage that may result in emergency cesarean hysterectomy. Prenatal diagnosis of placenta accreta is important because it reduces the fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality as appropriate pre-operative and per operative procedures are possible. Grey scale ultrasonography along with color Doppler imaging proves to be the non invasive, real time, readily available modality with high sensitivity and high positive predictive value.

Hydroelectric System Design, Timothy Mcdonnell Brown
Hydroelectric System Design, Timothy Mcdonnell Brown
Master's Theses
Hydroelectric power generation is not a viable option as a prime source of electrical energy for the Pico Blanco Boy Scout Camp, as determined by this thesis. The hydroelectric power system can only provide a maximum power capacity of 17kW as limited by the available mechanical energy of the water source. This power capacity is inadequate to reliably supply power to the electrical loads at the camp during peak demand periods. The purpose of this thesis was to study the feasibility of supplying the Boy Scout Camp with a renewable source of electrical energy through an exploration of various hydroelectric …
Functional Reactive Musical Performers, Justin M. Phillips
Functional Reactive Musical Performers, Justin M. Phillips
Master's Theses
Computers have been assisting in recording, sound synthesis and other fields of music production for quite some time. The actual performance of music continues to be an area in which human players are chosen over computer performers. Musical performance is an area in which personalization is more important than consistency. Human players play with each other, reacting to phrases and ideas created by the players that they are playing with. Computer performers lack the ability to react to the changes in the performance that humans perceive naturally, giving the human players an advantage over the computer performers.
This thesis creates …
Emerging Trends In Greenhouse Gas Thresholds Of Significance For Use Under The California Environmental Quality Act, Nancy E. Mathison
Emerging Trends In Greenhouse Gas Thresholds Of Significance For Use Under The California Environmental Quality Act, Nancy E. Mathison
Master's Theses
This study determined the state of the practice and emerging trends in developing greenhouse gas (GHG) thresholds of significance for use under the California Environmental Policy Act (CEQA). To describe the adopted, proposed or considered approaches for developing thresholds of significance by air districts and the thought processes behind these decisions, information was obtained through surveys and phone interviews from twelve employees of air districts in California, State agencies, and consultants that are considered experts on this issue. The results of this study include a comparison matrix of the approaches of the three air districts that have adopted or proposed …
Modeling Of A Gyro-Stabilized Helicopter Camera System Using Neural Networks, Nicholas Joseph Layshot
Modeling Of A Gyro-Stabilized Helicopter Camera System Using Neural Networks, Nicholas Joseph Layshot
Master's Theses
On-board gimbal systems for camera stabilization in helicopters are typically based on linear models. Such models, however, are inaccurate due to system nonlinearities and complexities. As an alternative approach, artificial neural networks can provide a more accurate model of the gimbal system based on their non-linear mapping and generalization capabilities.
This thesis investigates the applications of artificial neural networks to model the inertial characteristics (on the azimuth axis) of the inner gimbal in a gyro-stabilized multi-gimbal system. The neural network is trained with time-domain data obtained from gyro rate sensors of an actual camera system. The network performance is evaluated …
Epicardial Wireless Pacemaker For Improved Left Ventricular Resynchronization (Conceptual Design), Rodney J. Hawkins
Epicardial Wireless Pacemaker For Improved Left Ventricular Resynchronization (Conceptual Design), Rodney J. Hawkins
Master's Theses
The human body is a well tuned mechanism where systems work in synergy to provide a healthy quality of life. The human circulatory system transports oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body delivering the proper nutrients for cells to function. When the heart malfunctions, serious complications can arise leading to sudden cardiac arrest. Congestive heart failure (CHF) is one heart disease that affects the synchrony of the heart’s ventricles.
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) has been widely accepted as a treatment for CHF. Similar to traditional dual chamber pacing techniques, CRT adds a pacing lead to stimulate …
An Investigation Of Initially Delaminated Composite Sandwich With Delamination Arrest Mechanism Under Buckling Loading, Tony D. Tran
An Investigation Of Initially Delaminated Composite Sandwich With Delamination Arrest Mechanism Under Buckling Loading, Tony D. Tran
Master's Theses
This thesis involves the development of a fiberglass-foam composite sandwich structure with the introduction of delamination arrestment keys; therefore, a study of an initially delaminated composite sandwich structure was the experimental analysis on multiple configurations in how the arrestment keys are placed.
The first part of this thesis research was to the experimental design and manufacturing of the composite sandwich plates. These plates were later cut down to the specific test dimensions and manufacturing processes for the composite sandwich plates and test specimens were created. The composite sandwich plates were manufactured using a vacuum resin infusion process. The dimensions of …

The Hoarse Whisperer, David M. Kirkham
The Hoarse Whisperer, David M. Kirkham
BYU Studies
In this personal essay, David Milo Kirkham recounts his interactions with the animal kingdom. From his early banter with his neighbor's sheep and his trapping and killing of nuisance skunks in his rural community to his later encounter in the Bavarian Alps with a beautiful red fox, Kirkham both entertains and provokes serious thought about our relationship with God's other creatures. "Who are the animals?" he asks. "Our relationship to them seems complex. I know some people see it in black and white: kill them, dominate them, or protect them all at any cost. But to me it is complex. …

Excavating Nauvoo: The Mormons And The Rise Of Historical Archaeology In America, Richard K. Talbot, Benjamin C. Pykles
BYU Studies
During a recent coordination meeting, an archaeologist employed by the state of Utah tried to explain how the science of archaeology can help Native Americans to know their history. In response, one of the Native American participants exclaimed, "We already know our history!" This statement sheds light on tensions that arise when reconstructing the past. To those living in a postmodern world, history can serve many purposes and many masters; for this particular Native American, the oral history that had been passed down generationally to her presented her past in a context and form with which she was accustomed and …
