Structural And Stratigraphic Age Constraints Of The Inskip Formation, East Range, Nevada: Implications For Mesozoic Tectonics Of Western North America, Joshua David Wilkins
Structural And Stratigraphic Age Constraints Of The Inskip Formation, East Range, Nevada: Implications For Mesozoic Tectonics Of Western North America, Joshua David Wilkins
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Structural, stratigraphic, and U-Pb geochronologic studies of the Inskip Formation of the north-central East Range place new constraints on the depositional age of the Inskip Formation and the timing of contractional deformation in the East Range, including Golconda thrusting. The Inskip Formation was initially considered Permian in age and to rest unconformably on the Valmy (or Leach) Formation (Ferguson et al., 1951). Later mapping by Whitbread (1978, 1994) divided the formation into the Upper and Lower Inskip Formation, both of which were inferred to be Mississippian in age. Laterreinterpretation of Whitebread’s (1994) work and new paleontological data revised the age …

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects
Assigning Value to Intuitive Dimensions in Creativity
The abilities described by people as intuitive processes include anything from having an unexplained feeling surrounding an event, or having met with a psychic experience, the latter occurring mostly without a catalyst or deliberate engagement. This paper briefly explores the use of these intuitive qualities within the subject of creativity, a thinking skill enhanced by using all available resources. A brief questionnaire was administered to fifteen colleagues regarding information or feelings gained from intuition, dreams, unexplained voice contact or sensations, visual events, and other self-described developments that could be classified as intuitive phenomena. …

Adapted Recumbent Bike, Kurtis Mundell, Dane Tiemeier, Laura Yakuma, Darius Yu
Mechanical Engineering
The adapted recumbent project was to redesign a disabled veteran’s recumbent bicycle. The main areas of concern were the crank pedal, chain tension, braking and steering system, and ergonomics. Since the customer is an avid biker, this bike will be used often, so the design is based on the ease of repair and replacement. The crank system was redesigned to a lightweight, adjustable part with chain clearance and high strength. The chain tension was improved by replacing the existing single idler wheel/chain tube system with a dual idler wheel system. The dual idler has a titanium sprocket in one of …

Electronic Document Management System (EDMS) is a system that is commonly found in organizations that deal with a lot of documents. It is the application of technology to reduce paper utilization, expedite communications and increases organization’s performance and productivity. Leveraging information technology to manage document is one of the most important challenges for organizations since most of the valuable information in the organizations is in the form of letters, contracts, agreement, memos, reports, notes of discussion, meeting minutes, policy statements etc. The manual processes usually required to be re-engineered for computerization purposes. The availability of technologies provides more and better …
Biogeography Of Alien Vertebrates In The Galapagos Islands: Patterns, Processes, And Conservation Implications, Reese Brand Phillips
Biogeography Of Alien Vertebrates In The Galapagos Islands: Patterns, Processes, And Conservation Implications, Reese Brand Phillips
Biology ETDs
Alien species are one of the principal threats to global biodiversity. Insular ecosystems have proven exceptionally susceptible to invasion by aliens and vulnerable to their negative effects. Some of the most destructive alien species are vertebrates, in part due to their having been introduced to islands worldwide. Rodents (Rattus spp. and Mus musculus) are among the most widespread and devastating invasive species for insular flora and fauna. In this research I investigate the biogeographic patterns and processes of alien vertebrates in the Galapagos Islands, focusing on the mechanisms that influence their dispersal and colonization within the archipelago. In the first …
Development Of A Cubesat Payload To Model Particle Dampening In Space: Design And Implementation Of Software For Cp7, Daniel Walker
Development Of A Cubesat Payload To Model Particle Dampening In Space: Design And Implementation Of Software For Cp7, Daniel Walker
Computer Engineering
The California Polytechnic State University CubeSat student research & development group, PolySat, is currently in a mature development stage of a single unit CubeSat designated CP7. The CP7 mission implements a scientific payload designed to characterize particle dampers in microgravity conditions. When subjected to vibration, the momentum exchanges and frictional forces of the particles create a damping effect that can be optimized to suit a number of applications over a broad frequency and amplitude range. In space based applications, particle dampers would serve as a robust and simple device to eliminate jitter in optical assemblies and other sensitive instrumentation. This …
Utilization Of Automated Gcc Optimization For Dual-Width Instruction Sets On The Arm Architecture, Shane Watson
Utilization Of Automated Gcc Optimization For Dual-Width Instruction Sets On The Arm Architecture, Shane Watson
Computer Engineering
One of the most important considerations in embedded systems is code size. This consideration is obviously imposed by external factors such as cost and physical space, but what it boils down to is that we want our devices to be as powerful as they can within a (typically limited) specific form factor. This limits the amount of space we have for memory and as such we should always be considering the code size of our application and making sure it’s as efficient as possible. We also then need to consider other factors such as performance and power consumption. This is …

Defiling The Retaliation Doctrine: Kasten V. Saint-Gobain And The Anti-Retaliation Provision Of The Fair Labor Standards Act, Madeline Engel
Chicago-Kent Law Review
The anti-retaliation provision of the Fair Labor Standards Act makes it unlawful for an employer to retaliate against an employee who has "filed any complaint" under the FLSA. In Kasten v. Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Corp., the Seventh Circuit declared its position in a growing circuit split as to whether an employee can "file" a verbal complaint of an alleged FLSA violation. Kasten answered the question in the negative, holding that verbal complaints are not protected activity under the Act. This note analyzes relevant Supreme Court precedent and the evolution of the circuit split, as well as principles of statutory …
Dependent On The Jury: Anticipation And Obviousness Of Dependent Patent Claims And Irreconcilable Jury Verdicts, Patrick Bickley
Dependent On The Jury: Anticipation And Obviousness Of Dependent Patent Claims And Irreconcilable Jury Verdicts, Patrick Bickley
Chicago-Kent Law Review
A jury verdict finding an independent claim valid but a related dependent claim either anticipated or obvious is irreconcilable. However, the Federal Circuit has used the inconsistencies between regional circuits on the issue of jury verdicts to reach different outcomes in similar cases based solely on the region in which the patent case originated. This note advocates a modification to the Federal Circuit's rule of deference to consider irreconcilable verdicts of independent and dependent claims under its own independent analysis. A consistent approach allowing for appellate review regardless of post-verdict motions is advocated, although a more modest position of requiring …

Prolegomenon On The Status Of The Hopey, Changey Thing In American Criminal Justice, Frank O. Bowman Iii
Faculty Publications
This is an introductory essay to Volume 23, Number 2, of the FEDERAL SENTENCING REPORTER, which considers the state of American criminal justice policy in 2010, two years after the "Change" election of 2008. Part I of the essay paints a statistical picture of trends in federal criminal practice and sentencing over the last half-decade or so, with particular emphasis on sentence severity and the degree of regional and inter-judge sentencing disparity. The statistics suggest that the expectation that the 2005 Booker decision would produce a substantial increase in the exercise of judicial sentencing discretion and a progressive abandonment of …
A Poetics Of The Restoration, George B. Handley
A Poetics Of The Restoration, George B. Handley
BYU Studies
George B. Handley, professor of humanities at Brigham Young University, discusses whether the world's cultural traditions should be considered as treasures that should be embraced by Latter-day Saints, or fallen philosophy and vain deceit. He argues that while culture might be the obstacle that blinds us, it must also become the means or language by which we can come to understand God's will. We can have a lifelong passion for learning both from the word of God—from revelation—and the word of men and women—from the world's cultures. The humanities—literature, philosophy, history, and the arts—help us to see how our own …

This article is a classic speech by Robert K. Thomas and is an excerpt of a forthcoming publication of Thomas's best speeches. Thomas (1918–1998) served the Brigham Young University community for thirty-two years as an English professor, founder and director of the Honors Program, and academic vice president. This speech describes how genuine faith can successfully confront the challenges we face when our goals seem to be thwarted by the realities of our world. The speech concludes with Hebrews 11, which states that many great, faithful men and women died without seeing the fulfillment of promises they had received and …

Since John Welch's discovery of chiasmus in the Book of Mormon in 1967, many critics have attempted to show how chiasmus appears in just about every type of literature, from Dr. Seuss to Strangite scripture. This article discusses the authors' statistical admissibility tests to verify whether a chiasmus in a work shows strong evidence of intentionality by the original author. Their results indicate that certain passages in the Old Testament and in the Book of Mormon show …
The Faith Instinct: How Religion Evolved And Why It Endures, Brian Jackson, Nicholas Wade
The Faith Instinct: How Religion Evolved And Why It Endures, Brian Jackson, Nicholas Wade
BYU Studies
"People of faith may not warm to the view that the mind's receptivity to religion has been shaped by evolution," writes Nicholas Wade, science writer for the New York Times, in his new book The Faith Instinct. If religion evolves with cultural circumstances, then it loses some of its immutable, supernatural qualities. On the other hand, atheists "may not embrace the idea that religious behavior evolved because it conferred essential benefits on ancient societies and their successors." If we accept the proposition that faith endures because cultures select it (perhaps unconsciously) as a necessary attribute of their survival, then we …

Exerted Influence Of Des Concentration In The Room Temperature Ionic Conductivity And Thermal Behavior Of Cs-Litfsi-Des Polymer Electrolytes, Subramaniam Ramesh, R. Shanti, E. Morris, R. Durairaj
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
In this communication, effort was devoted to fabricate completely biodegradable polymer electrolytes that are environmental-friendly by utilizing com starch (CS), bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LITFSI) and deep eutectic solvent (DES) (synthesized from the mixture of choline chloride and urea with 1:2 ratio) by solution casting technique. The incorporation of DES in plasticizing the CS-LiTFSI matrix was valued primarily due to its capability in increasing the amorphous elastomeric phase in the polymer matrix. This is a new and versatile platform which allows high ionic conduction possessed by natural polymer based polymer electrolytes. In alien to identify the best DES composition ratio, a wide range …

Plasticisation Effect On Thermal And Tensile Properties Of Injection Moulded Short Glass Fibreipol Yamide 6,6 Composites, A. Hassan, N.M.M. Abdul Rahman, R. Yahya
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Polymer composites of polyamide 6,6 reinforced with short glass fibre were prepared by injection moulding. The composites under different conditions were investigated by thermogravimetric, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical and tensile tests. The glass transition temperatures are found to be sensitive to moisture. According to the TGA results, the glass fibre loading in PA 6,6 does have increment effect on the thermal stability of the composites. In contrast, the incorporation of glass fibre and moisture into the PA 6,6 matrix result in a remarkable decrease in degree of crystallinity value. It is found that the incorporation of glass fibre into …

Perceived Slant Of Binocularly Viewed Large-Scale Surfaces: A Common Model From Explicit And Implicit Measures, Z. Li, Frank H. Durgin
Psychology Faculty Works
It is known that the perceived slants of large distal surfaces, such as hills, are exaggerated and that the exaggeration increases with distance. In a series of two experiments, we parametrically investigated the effect of viewing distance and slant on perceived slant using a high-fidelity virtual environment. An explicit numerical estimation method and an implicit aspect-ratio approach were separately used to assess the perceived optical slant of simulated large-scale surfaces with different slants and viewing distances while gaze direction was fixed. The results showed that perceived optical slant increased logarithmically with viewing distance and the increase was proportionally greater for …

Charitable Gifts Made By S Corporations: Opportunities And Challenges, Christopher R. Hoyt
ACTEC Law Journal
This article examines the tax opportunities and tax hazards when a subchapter S corporation makes a charitable gift. The article demonstrates that usually the shareholders of an S corporation and the charity are both better off when an S corporation makes a charitable gift compared to having a shareholder make a charitable gift of S corporation stock. Either way, the income tax benefit will be on the S corporation shareholder's personal income tax return. By having the S corporation make the gift, the parties avoid the "three bad things" that happen when a shareholder donates S corporation stock. The problems …
