C-Jun Inhibits Mammary Apoptosis In Vivo., Sanjay Katiyar, Mathew C Casimiro, Luis Dettin, Xiaoming Ju, Erwin F Wagner, Hirokazu Tanaka, Richard Pestell

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

c-jun, which is overexpressed in a number of human cancers encodes a critical component of the AP-1 complex. c-jun has been shown to either induce or inhibit cellular apoptosis. Germ line deletion of both c-jun alleles is embryonically lethal. To determine the role of the endogenous c-jun gene in apoptosis, we performed mammary epithelial cell-targeted somatic deletion using floxed c-jun (c-jun(f/f)) conditional knockout mice. Laser capture microdissection demonstrated endogenous c-jun inhibits expression of apoptosis inducing genes and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-reducing genes (MnSOD, catalase). ROS have been implicated in apoptosis and undergo enzymatic elimination via MnSOD and CuZnSOD with further …

Considerations On Unsupervised Spectral Data Unmixing And Complexity Pursuit, Stefan Robila Dec 2010

Considerations On Unsupervised Spectral Data Unmixing And Complexity Pursuit, Stefan Robila

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Hyperspectral sensors carry the distinctive advantage of recording hundreds of contiguous spectral images for the same scene providing an extraordinary amount of information that leads to precise differentiation of materials present in the scene even when such materials contribute only to few pixels [1]. With the advent of more and more powerful sensing platforms, coupled with reduction in manufacturing costs and diversification of technologies, hyperspectral imaging has become a powerful approach in remote sensing with applications spanning all traditional fields (such as agriculture, mining, military, resource management, etc.) as well as new ones (manufacturing quality control, pollution detection, health and …

Parallel Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Data Using Complexity Pursuit, Stefan Robila, Martin Butler

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Accurate and fast data unmixing is key to most applications employing hyperspectral data. Among the large number unmixing approaches, Blind Source Separation (BSS) has been employed successfully through a variety of techniques, yet most of these approaches continue to be computationally expensive due to their iterative nature. In this context, it is imperative to seek efficient approaches that leverage the accuracy of the algorithms and the availability of off-the-shelf computationally performant systems such as multi-cpu and multi core. In this paper we tackle the spatial complexity based unmixing, a new technique shown to outperform many BSS solutions. We develop a …

An Emr Tool For Clinics, Valentine Okorie, John Jenq Dec 2010

An Emr Tool For Clinics, Valentine Okorie, John Jenq

Department of Computer Science Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

As at 2009, there are about 75% of clinics and hospitals that are still using the archaic fde/folder system to write and store medical data. In fact, the current health care debate has elevated this discussion as well, since it is a common believe that EMR will reduce health care cost in the long run. Some of the primary reasons and advantage of using the electronic medical records to store data are 1. Cost reduction, 2 Easy accesses to Medical records, and 3 Environmental friendly (paperless). In this project, a cost effective and user friendly EMR which is easy to …

Business Process Management: Helping Organizations Remain Competitive, Kevin P. Duffy, Jeremy Humble Dec 2010

Business Process Management: Helping Organizations Remain Competitive, Kevin P. Duffy, Jeremy Humble

Management Information Systems Faculty Publications

Business process management involves the examination of business processes in organizations, in order to make them more effective and efficient. BPM changes the focus of analysis from the organization as a whole to the organizational process. A process is a series of steps that lead to an outcome and may be simple or complex, depending on the type and number of steps involved. A process within an organization by which the company either introduces new products or refreshes old ones with new features, thus providing the market with new product offerings.

A Contractual Approach To Shareholder Oppression Law, Benjamin Means Dec 2010

A Contractual Approach To Shareholder Oppression Law, Benjamin Means

Faculty Publications

According to standard law and economics, minority shareholders in closely held corporations must bargain against opportunism by controlling shareholders before investing. Put simply, you made your bed, now you must lie in it. Yet most courts offer a remedy for shareholder oppression, often premised on the notion that controlling shareholders owe fiduciary duties to the minority or must honor the minority's reasonable expectations. Thus, law and economics, the dominant mode of corporate law scholarship, appears irreconcilably opposed to minority shareholder protection, a defining feature of the existing law of close corporations.

This Article contends that a more nuanced theory of …

Cultural Norms And Race Discrimination Standards: A Case Study In How The Two Diverge, Derek W. Black Dec 2010

Cultural Norms And Race Discrimination Standards: A Case Study In How The Two Diverge, Derek W. Black

Faculty Publications

The legal standard for race discrimination - the intent standard - has been scrutinized and justified for decades, but that conversation has occurred almost entirely within the legal community. Relatively little effort has been made to engage the public. This Article posits that the discussion of discrimination standards must account for and include public understandings of race and discrimination because race is a socially constructed concept and discrimination is culturally contingent. Race discrimination standards based solely upon the legal community’s perceptions are susceptible to significant flaws. This Article begins the incorporation of public understandings of race and discrimination by examining …

Sweeping Minimum Perimeter Enclosing Parallelograms: Optimal Crumb Cleanup, Yonit Bousany, Mary Leah Karker, Joseph O'Rourke, Leona Sparaco

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

We examine the problem of pushing all the points of a planar region into one point using parallel sweeps of an infinite line, minimizing the sum of the lengths of the sweep vectors. We characterize the optimal 2-sweeps of triangles, and provide a linear-time algorithm for convex polygons.

Flank Gland-Secreted Putative Chemosignals Pertaining To Photoperiod, Endocrine States, And Sociosexual Behavior In Golden Hamsters, Ying-Juan Liu, Da-Wei Wang, Lixing Sun, Jin-Hua Zhang, Jian-Xu Zhang Dec 2010

Flank Gland-Secreted Putative Chemosignals Pertaining To Photoperiod, Endocrine States, And Sociosexual Behavior In Golden Hamsters, Ying-Juan Liu, Da-Wei Wang, Lixing Sun, Jin-Hua Zhang, Jian-Xu Zhang

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Behavioral studies have shown that flank glands are involved in chemical communication in golden hamsters Mesocricetus auratus but little chemical analysis has been conducted on volatiles arising from these glands. Using gas chromatography- mass spectrometry, we detected compounds from the flank glands of males, only eight of which were also produced in females. Based on these chemical data we performed a number of further experiments. By manipulating light we found that males exposed to short-photoperiods developed smaller flank glands than those exposed to long-photoperiods. Six flank gland volatiles reduced in relative abundance, which possibly coded for reproductive status of males …

Libstatmech And Applications To Astrophysics, Tianhong Yu Dec 2010

Libstatmech And Applications To Astrophysics, Tianhong Yu

All Theses

In this work an introduction to Libstatmech is presented and applications especially to astrophysics are discussed. Libstatmech is a C toolkit for computing the statistical mechanics of fermions and bosons, written on top of libxml and gsl (GNU Scientific Library). Calculations of Thomas-Fermi Screening model and Bose-Einstein Condensate based on libstatmech demonstrate the expected results. For astrophysics application, a simple Type Ia Supernovae model is established to run the network calculation with weak reactions, in which libstatmech contributes to compute the electron chemical potential and allows the weak reverse rates to be calculated from detailed balance. Starting with pure 12C …

Best-First Heuristic Search For Multicore Machines, Ethan Burns, Sofia N. Lemons, Wheeler Ruml, Rong Zhou Dec 2010

Best-First Heuristic Search For Multicore Machines, Ethan Burns, Sofia N. Lemons, Wheeler Ruml, Rong Zhou

Computer Science

To harness modern multicore processors, it is imperative to develop parallel versions of fundamental algorithms. In this paper, we compare different approaches to parallel best-first search in a shared-memory setting. We present a new method, PBNF, that uses abstraction to partition the state space and to detect duplicate states without requiring frequent locking. PBNF allows speculative expansions when necessary to keep threads busy. We identify and fix potential livelock conditions in our approach, proving its correctness using temporal logic. Our approach is general, allowing it to extend easily to suboptimal and anytime heuristic search. In an empirical comparison on STRIPS …
