Propagating And Non-Propagating Intraseasonal Oscillations In The Tropical Atmosphere: Their Vertical And Horizontal Structures And Developing Mechanisms, Zhaoning Liang Dec 2010

Propagating And Non-Propagating Intraseasonal Oscillations In The Tropical Atmosphere: Their Vertical And Horizontal Structures And Developing Mechanisms, Zhaoning Liang

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A fixed beamformer is proposed and designed to identify source regions of Intra-Seasonal Oscillations (ISO) in the tropical atmosphere. After tested by simulations of single and complex sources of waves, the fixed beamformer is applied to the ECMWF interpolated data grids to detect and identify source regions of the ISO in the tropical Indian and Pacific Ocean region. Results show that the fixed beamforming technique can uniquely identify the source region of the ISO, the source regions of all major ISO in the tropical Indian and western equatorial Pacific region from 1974 to 2002 have been identified.

Examinations of ISO …

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Sawtooth Range forms part of the Montana Disturbed Belt in the Front Ranges of the Rocky Mountains, along strike from the Alberta Syncline in the Canadian Rockies. The belt developed in the footwall to the Lewis Thrust during the Sevier orogeny and is similar in deformation style to the Canadian Foothills, with a series of stacked thrust sheets carrying Palaeozoic carbonates. The Sawtooth Range can be divided into an inner and outer deformed belt, separated by exposed fold structures in the overlying clastic sequence. Structures in the deformed belts plunge into the culmination of the NE-trending Scapegoat-Bannatyne trend, part …

A Little Bat And A Big City: Nocturnal Behavior Of The Tricolored Bat (Perimyotis Subflavus) Near Indianapolis Airport, Jared Scot Helms

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I captured 16 Perimyotis subflavus on property owned by the Indianapolis International Airport, of those 16 animals I obtained roosting data on all 16 and foraging data on 11 individuals. The goal of this project was to see if a short broad winged bat’s foraging and roosting habits were affected by the fragmentation of habitat due to rapid urbanization. Using radio telemetry to find roosts and to create multi-azimuth triangulation I was able to create data points and place them onto a habitat map inside ArcGIS software. Sampling the size of woodlots available to the bats I was able to …

Sysml-Based Domain-Specific Executable Workflows, Vikas Patel Dec 2010

Sysml-Based Domain-Specific Executable Workflows, Vikas Patel

All Theses

The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is a general-purpose graphical modeling language for specifying, analyzing, designing, and verifying complex systems. This thesis presents a tool called SysFlow Workflow Engine (SWE) that is being developed to execute a domain workflow defined using SysML's Activity Diagram. The thesis also describes extensions added to the SysML semantics to make them SWE executable. SWE focuses on grid computing, cyberinfrastructure and related domains; however, support for other domains can be easily added. SWE aims to provide a common interface to grid, cyberinfrastructure and other domain-specific software by abstracting their complexity and idiosyncrasies. To create a workflow, …

Mapping Problem And Requirements To Solution: Document Analysis Of Senior Design Projects, Shraddha Joshi

All Theses

Formulating and solving engineering problems and designing solutions that meet the established requirements are important skills that graduating engineering students need to possess. However, there are noticeable gaps in the literature with respect to understanding how the formulation of design problems and establishment of requirements affect the final design solution. This thesis is an initial attempt to understand the influence of level of detail of problem statement and requirements on the level of detail of final solution. In doing so, a document analysis of final reports from senior design class collected over a period of ten years from 1999 to …

Participants in this study were 121traditional undergraduate students from a Midwestern research university. Students responded to two self-report questionnaires: the Motivation for Vocabulary Learning Questionnaire (MVLQ), and the Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) (Wigfield & Guthrie,1997). The results suggested that MVLQ had good reliability …

The Relation Between Anger Rumination, Provocation, And Aggressive Behavior, Joshua Stephen Bullock Dec 2010

The Relation Between Anger Rumination, Provocation, And Aggressive Behavior, Joshua Stephen Bullock

Dissertations

Maladaptive, excessive anger rumination, conceptualized as self-focused attention towards thoughts and feelings associated with the emotion of anger, has been linked to actual aggressive behaviors. In general, the emotional experience of anger in response to provocation is a well-known antecedent of aggression. Anger rumination may be associated with increased risk for aggressive behavior by maintaining and lengthening the experience of anger. It is therefore reasonable to posit that individuals high in anger rumination may be more inclined to expend greater effort to aggress in response to provocation compared to low ruminators. That is, high ruminators when angered may be more …

Effect Of Ultrasonic Vibration On The Mass Transfer Coefficient In A Sieve Plate Scrubber, Dinora Monroy Melendez

All Theses

The air pollution technique of wet scrubbers for fumes, mists and suspended dusts as part of a polluted gas stream has been study as well as used for industries for many decades. The sieve tray is the simplest type of these scrubbers. A laboratory-scale single-stage, sieve tray countercurrent wet scrubber has been designed to study the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on the rate of mass transfer. A 20 kHz ultrasound frequency was chosen for a high performance cavitation to enhance the mass transport between the gas and liquid phases. Various perforation diameters and weir heights were employed in order to …

Olfactory Mate Choice And Potential Chemical Signals Of The White-Throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia Albicollis), Peter Sebastian

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chemical odor signals are well documented in mammals, and yet almost nothing is known about the use of chemical odor signals in birds due to the traditional view that birds have a no sense or a poor sense of smell. Recent studies have revealed the traditional view to be unfounded, but more work is necessary to 1) expand our knowledge of avian olfaction in passerine species and 2) determine whether birds utilize chemical signals. The aim of this thesis was to 1) test for olfactory-based choice in a passerine species, and examine the chemical composition of preen oil for potential …

Investment Timing For New Business Ventures, George W. Blazenko, Andrey D. Pavlov Dec 2010

Investment Timing For New Business Ventures, George W. Blazenko, Andrey D. Pavlov

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

A key requirement for the start of many entrepreneurial business is private equity or venture capital financing. In the traditional approach to entrepreneurial investment analysis, an entrepreneur starts a new venture and a venture capitalist finances the new venture when business return exceeds the financial opportunity cost for comparable risk - the cost of capital for the new venture. The real options literature recommends that entrepreneurs delay business start due to investment irreversibility until business return reaches a threshold greater than the cost of capital. In this paper, we show that for new ventures with modest earnings volatility, an entrepreneur …

Predicting Firm Failure: A Behavioral Finance Perspective, Rassoul Yazdipour, Richard Constand Dec 2010

Predicting Firm Failure: A Behavioral Finance Perspective, Rassoul Yazdipour, Richard Constand

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

In this article we first argue that researchers in the area of financial distress and failure cannot ignore the human/managerial/decision-making side of the business and just focus on the business' operations side; as has been the case so far for almost all the research in the area. We then discuss how psychological phenomena and principles, known as heuristics or mental shortcuts, could be utilized in building more powerful success/failure prediction models especially for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

Self-Discrepancies, Symbolic Self-Completion, And The Role Of Possessions In The Transition From High School To College, Ashlee Lochbaum

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the current study was to explore some of the ways that possessions may be used symbolically to aid adjustment in first-semester freshmen who are transitioning to college. Based on prior literature, the transition to college is often accompanied by self-discrepancies which may be alleviated through symbolic self-completion using possessions. Overall, 219 students participated in this study. Results indicate that first-semester freshmen, as well as upperclassmen students, rely on the symbolic use of possessions in both managing negative affect and symbolizing the ideal college student identity. Furthermore, managing affect through the use of feeling regulators was found to …
