Using Off-Diagonal Confinement As A Cooling Method, V. G. Rousseau, K. Hettiarachchilage, M. Jarrell, J. Moreno, D. E. Sheehy

In a recent letter we proposed a new confining method for ultracold atoms on optical lattices, which is based on off-diagonal confinement (ODC). This method was shown to have distinct advantages over the conventional diagonal confinement (DC), which makes use of a trapping potential, such as the existence of pure Mott phases and highly populated condensates. In this manuscript we show that the ODC method can also lead to lower temperatures than the DC method for a wide range of control parameters. Using exact diagonalization we determine this range of parameters for the hard-core case and then we extend our …

Background: The Escarval-Risk study aims to validate cardiovascular risk scales in patients with hypertension, diabetes or dyslipidemia living in the Valencia Community, a European Mediterranean region, based on data from an electronic health recording system comparing predicted events with observed during 5 years follow-up study. Methods/Design. A cohort prospective 5 years follow-up study has been designed including 25000 patients with hypertension, diabetes and/or dyslipidemia attended in usual clinical practice. All information is registered in a unique electronic health recording system (ABUCASIS) that is the usual way to register clinical practice in the Valencian Health System (primary and secondary care). A graph G is loosely-c-connected, or ℓ-c-connected, if there exists a number d depending on G such that the deletion of fewer than c vertices from G leaves precisely one infinite component and a graph containing at most d vertices. In this paper, we give the structure of a set of ℓ-c-connected infinite graphs that form an unavoidable set among the topological minors of ℓ-c-connected infinite graphs. Corresponding results for minors and parallel minors are also obtained. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A MEMS-based silicon pressure sensor for the ocean environment is presented. The aim of this study is the three-dimensional structural characterization of the genome packaging inside viral capsids via cryo-electron microscopy and three-dimensional reconstruction. The genome of some single-stranded viruses can be densely packaged within their capsid shells. Several stretches of the genome are known to adopt stable secondary structures, however, to date, little is known about the three-dimensional organization of the genome inside their capsid shells. Two techniques have been developed to facilitate the structural elucidation of genome packaging: the asymmetric random-model method, and the symmetry-mismatch, random model method. HIV prevention strategies among couples include condom use, mutual monogamy, and HIV testing. Research suggests that condom use is more likely with new or casual partners, and tends to decline as relationships become steady over time. Little is known, however, about explicit mutual monogamy agreements and HIV testing within heterosexual couples. This study used data from 434 young heterosexual couples at increased risk of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to assess (a) couple concordance on perceptions of a monogamy agreement, sustained monogamy, and HIV testing; and (b) the associations of relationship and demographic factors with monogamy agreement, sustained monogamy, …
