Studies Of Auxetic Foam And Bridge Deformation Using Digital Speckle Photography, Jiandong Yu Dec 2010

Studies Of Auxetic Foam And Bridge Deformation Using Digital Speckle Photography, Jiandong Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The mechanical properties of auxetic (negative Poisson's ratio) foam are studied and reviewed with different experimental methods. Developments in design, manufacture, test and analysis of auxetic foam and related composites are presented. Auxetic foam can be made by open-cell conventional PVC foam, through volumetric compressing and heating process successively. When cooling down to room temperature, the cellular micro structure of PVC foam has been turned out to be re-entranted, which means the ribs of each cell of the foam are protrude inward permanently due to the external mechanical and thermal effects. The new re-entranted structure opens out many interesting and …

Switching On And Off The Full Capacity Of An M/M/Infinity Queue & Dynamic Pricing And Power Generation Risk Management In Smart Grids, Xiaoxuan Zhang Dec 2010

Switching On And Off The Full Capacity Of An M/M/Infinity Queue & Dynamic Pricing And Power Generation Risk Management In Smart Grids, Xiaoxuan Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Part 1. We study a problem of optimal switching on and off the M/M/Infinity queue with holding, running and switching costs. We show that an optimal policy either always runs the system, or is defined by two thresholds M and N such that the system is switched on upon an arrival epoch if the system size accumulates to N and is switches off upon a departure epoch if the system size decreases to M.Part 2. We design an optimal incentive mechanism offered to energy customers at multiple network levels, such as distribution and feeder networks, with the aim of determining …

Revolutionizing Literature: Anarchism In The Lives And Works Of Emma Goldman, Dorothy Day, And Bernard Shaw, Virginia Costello Dec 2010

Revolutionizing Literature: Anarchism In The Lives And Works Of Emma Goldman, Dorothy Day, And Bernard Shaw, Virginia Costello

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

My dissertation seeks both to discover and analyze a current of anarchism present in the autobiographies and other works of two early-twentieth-century radical and radically different women: Emma Goldman and Dorothy Day. Both activists sought to express their anarchism, not primarily through political theory or through anarchist political action but through an explicit form of living: their radicalism was an aesthetic anarchism in that they advocated and exemplified a practice of radical self-creation. For Goldman this meant she synthesized politics, sexuality, and aesthetic sensibility. In her lectures and essays she employed drama, particularly George Bernard Shaw's, to convey her anarchist …

The Other Side Of Vietnam: The Conservative Movement And The Vietnam War, Seth Offenbach Dec 2010

The Other Side Of Vietnam: The Conservative Movement And The Vietnam War, Seth Offenbach

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The conservative movement was one of the few political movements which supported the Vietnam War. This dissertation looks at the reasons why most conservatives supported the Vietnam War and how that affected the Right's political philosophy. The Right's anti-communist and anti-liberal identity explains much of the reasons why it supported the war, but supporting the unpopular war greatly affected the movement's makeup and ideology. Complicating movement cohesion was the presence of a conservative anti-war protest movement. This dissertation's central argument is that the politics of supporting the war helped unravel the movement's various intellectual factions, largely resulting in the separation of …

Measurement Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Array Compression Response, Changhong Cao Dec 2010

Measurement Of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotube Array Compression Response, Changhong Cao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the form of vertically aligned arrays or films has been of interest due to the super-compressible response and the ability to be used as electrical and thermal contacts. CNT arrays have shown the remarkable ability to react as foam-like structures and exhibit localized, coordinated buckling within specific regions. An understanding of the buckling region evolution and the resulting effects on the bulk CNT array response are important, unanswered fundamental questions necessary for the future application of CNT arrays. Here, we report on the low-cycle compression of bulk vertically aligned CNT arrays to observe …

Domain Formation In Asymmetric Model Membranes, Hui-Ting Cheng Dec 2010

Domain Formation In Asymmetric Model Membranes, Hui-Ting Cheng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The plasma membrane of eukaryotic cells contains a lipid bilayer which acts as a physical barrier and is the site for many cellular signaling events. The lipid molecules in the plasma membrane are non-randomly distributed within the bilayer. Both their lateral organization (lipid domains) and transverse distribution (lipid asymmetry) are important in membrane function. Since the function and structure of the plasma membrane are difficult to study due to its complex and dynamic nature, a good model membrane is needed. However, commonly used procedures for liposome preparation cannot truly mimic plasma membranes because they do not provide control over lipid …

Metal-Thilate Complexes As Models For Metal-Cysteine Centers In Metalloproteins: The Role Of The Second Coordination Sphere Interactions, Lu Gan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As a clean energy source, hydrogen is an attractive alternative. Among all the challenges that hydrogen economy has, it is particularly important to develop new ways to generate hydrogen without hydrocarbons. In search of cheap and robust material, we are learning from nature.Hydrogenase enzymes, which occur in a wide variety of microorganisms, catalyze the oxidization or production of molecular hydrogen (2H+ + 2e = H2,). In the case of [NiFe]-hydrogenase enzymes, the Ni is coordinated as a [Ni-(S-Cys)4] center which undergoes a series of redox changes during the catalytic processes. This work is focusing on the synthesis of model compounds …

Calculation Of Virial Coefficients And Their Uses, Nicholas Getter Dec 2010

Calculation Of Virial Coefficients And Their Uses, Nicholas Getter

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This work is centers on the classical statistical derivation of thermodynamic properties of a system from its pair potential through the calculation of virial coefficients and also develops a useful method for modeling systems with the square-well potential. It is organized into 5 chapters.Chapter 1 lays the statistical mechanics background for the use of virial coefficients and the square-well model. It is intended for the reader unfamiliar with these concepts and with the exception of a derivation of C(T) for the square- well potential using overlapping spheres, does not contain any novel discoveries.Chapter 2 introduces a Monte Carlo hit-and-miss technique …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this dissertation we present a compiler-assisted execution-based software modelchecking method targeting all languages that are acceptable by the compiler. We treatthe intermediate representation of the program under compilation as a language andinterpret it using a customized virtual machine. Our model checkers are based on thisintermediate representation level virtual machine and have full access to its states. Weimplemented two model checkers: a stateless Monte Carlo model checker GMC2 anda bounded concrete-symbolic model checker using the dynamic path reduction algorithmfor reachability problems of linear C programs. We also introduce the new technique of Software Monitoring with Controllable Over-head (SMCO). SMCO is formally …

Ceramic Nanomaterials For Energy, Gagan Jodhani Dec 2010

Ceramic Nanomaterials For Energy, Gagan Jodhani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this work we try to synthesize MoO3 and WO3 nanoceramics by understanding the effects of precursor parameters on the electrospinning process. We synthesized polymer based composites with molybdenum oxide and Tungsten oxide under straight polarity i.e. keeping needle charged and collector grounded; as well as reverse polarity i.e. keeping the needle grounded and collector charged. We observed MoO3 nanotubes after heat treatment of the composite mats spun in reverse polarity. The reason for formation of nanotubes is the presensce of molybdenum oxide particles as an outer shell surrounding the polymer fiber core in the spun mats, this core shell …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Racial/Ethnic Disparities In Health Care Usage: The Roles Of Perceptions Of Care & Expected Longevity, Jeffrey Alfred Jones

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Countless studies have documented the existence of disparities byrace and ethnicity in the health care system in the United States. However, not many have sought to explicitly quantify the relativeimportance of each of the proposed determining factors. Thisdissertation thus sought to identify the major causes of disparitiesin health care usage by employing an adaptation of theBlinder/Oaxaca decomposition method originally used in theliterature on wage differentials.Specifically, this study sought to investigate the roles that racialdifferences in patients' perceptions of care and expected longevity(as they relate to expected gains) might play in the observeddisparities in usage. Perceptions of care measures (trust andfear/dislike) were …

The Microstructure And Properties Of Plasma Sprayed Ceramic Composites, Kerry James Lapierre Dec 2010

The Microstructure And Properties Of Plasma Sprayed Ceramic Composites, Kerry James Lapierre

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The microstructure and properties of plasma-sprayed ceramics and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) have been investigated. Substrate-free deposits were fabricated by plasma spraying onto expendable graphite substrates. The deposits were evaluated in the as-sprayed and heat-treated conditions. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) was used in conjunction with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to examine the phase content and transformation temperatures of plasma-sprayed Al2O3. Mechanical properties were measured using three-point flexural testing and density measurements were made for both the as-sprayed and heat treated conditions. Significant increases in modulus and strength were achieved as a result of post. spray heat treatment.Having established baseline properties with …

Links Between Conservation/Development Projects And International Conventions And Programs : The Southeastern Rainforest Of Madagascar., Benedicte Leclercq

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Integrated Conservation and Development Projects (ICDPs) emerged in the 1980s and 1990s, to reconcile the need to protect threatened natural areas and, at the same time, to foster human development. Increasingly, around the world, natural resources were being rapidly depleted. In some cases local communities were held responsible for over-exploiting these resources, even when for their subsistence. The present research was based on an intensive case study of an ICDP developed within the framework of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and implemented around Midongy-Befotaka National Park, in the Southeastern Humid Forests of Madagascar. The main activities involved were linked not …

Determination Of The Monoclinic Properties Of Human Tooth Enamel Microstructure By A Periodic Three Dimensional Finite Element Model, Cunyou Lu Dec 2010

Determination Of The Monoclinic Properties Of Human Tooth Enamel Microstructure By A Periodic Three Dimensional Finite Element Model, Cunyou Lu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Researchers have reported diverse mechanical properties (Young's modulus) of human tooth enamel from experiments and finite element simulations, because of the complicated microstructure, which contains variations in crystal orientations and non-homogeneous properties. Although past models have effectively considered the microstructural effects, appropriate conditions for introducing crystal orientations within enamel rods and the property variations between rods and the interrod enamel are still necessary. In this thesis, the micromechanical response of the enamel microstructure is investigated using a periodic finite element model to determine the effective monoclinic mechanical properties and determine localized effects of microstructure on the stress field. A spherical micro-indentation …

Characterization Of Antimicrobial Activity Present In The Cuticle Of American Lobster, Homarus Americanus, Margaret Anne Mars Dec 2010

Characterization Of Antimicrobial Activity Present In The Cuticle Of American Lobster, Homarus Americanus, Margaret Anne Mars

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

American lobster is an ecologically and socioeconomically important species. In recent years the species has been affected by disease and the catch in Southern New England has fallen dramatically. In order to fully understand how and why diseases affect lobster populations, it is imperative to fully understand lobster defense mechanisms. The cuticle, previously believed to act only as a physical barrier, has recently been shown to contain antimicrobial activity. This thesis focused on characterizing this activity and attempted to identify the molecules responsible. A sterile shell extract prepared from a pool of lobster shells was active against Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio …

Particle-Reactive Radionuclides (Th-234, Be-7 And Pb-210) As Tracers Of Sediment Dynamics In An Urban Coastal Lagoon (Jamaica Bay, Ny), Alisha Anne Renfro

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study has been motivated by the issue of marsh loss in Jamaica Bay, New York. A deficit in sediment supply has been implicated as a factor in the dramatic marsh loss, and we have used particle-reactive natural radionuclides as tracers for the transport and deposition of particles in the bay. The short-lived radionuclides 7Be (half-life = 53.3 days) and 234Th (half-life = 24.1 days) serve as tracers of particle dynamics on short-term (seasonal) time scales, while the longer lived 210Pb (half-life = 22.3 y) traces the fate of particles on decadal time scales. In Jamaica Bay, the well-characterized supply …

The Identification Of A Novel Binding Partner For Phospholipase Cβ1, Translin-¶Ðassociated Factor X: A Link To ¶Ÿrna Interference, Omozuanvbo Reginald Aisiku Dec 2010

The Identification Of A Novel Binding Partner For Phospholipase Cβ1, Translin-¶Ðassociated Factor X: A Link To ¶Ÿrna Interference, Omozuanvbo Reginald Aisiku

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Mammalian inositol-specific phospholipase Cβ1 (PLCβ1) is activated by Gαq subunits on the plasma membrane where it catalyzes hydrolysis of the minor membrane phosphatidylinositol 4,5 bisphosphate. While PLCβ1 localizes primarily to the plasma membrane it also exists in other compartments of the cell. It is not currently known what function PLCβ1 has in the cytosol and nucleus nor is it known what factors localize PLCβ1 to these compartments. In this study, we have identified a novel binding partner, translin-associated factor X (TRAX). Our experiments show that both proteins interact in solution and in cells. While TRAX exerts little effect on the …

Fisheries-Dependent Indicators Of Climate Change In Western Australia Wamsi:Sub-Project 4.2.3, Nick Caputi, Alan Pearce Dec 2010

Fisheries-Dependent Indicators Of Climate Change In Western Australia Wamsi:Sub-Project 4.2.3, Nick Caputi, Alan Pearce

Fisheries Research Reports

The use of fishery-dependent data may be a cost-effective way of assessing whether there have been any changes in the distribution and relative abundance of species. Such indicators are part of an ongoing data gathering system and the costs are relatively low compared to those of a fishery-independent field program. Fishery-dependent data may therefore be obtained at a higher frequency and allow detection of changes faster than would be possible from the results from the direct sampling of specific sites within entire ecosystems.

The Gini Index And Measures Of Inequality, Frank A. Farris Dec 2010

The Gini Index And Measures Of Inequality, Frank A. Farris

Mathematics and Computer Science

The Gini index is a summary statistic that measures how fairly a resource is distributed in a population; income is a primary example. In addition to a self-contained presentation of the Gini index, we give two equivalent ways to interpret this summary statistic: first in terms of the percentile level of the person who earns the average dollar, and second in terms of how the lower of two randomly chosen incomes compares, on average, to mean income.

The Role Of Owner In Capital Structure Decisions: An Analysis Of Single-Owner Corporations, James Ang, Rebel Cole, Daniel Lawson Dec 2010

The Role Of Owner In Capital Structure Decisions: An Analysis Of Single-Owner Corporations, James Ang, Rebel Cole, Daniel Lawson

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

This study examines the extent to which individual demographic characteristics of owners influence capital structure desisions. Using the Federal Reserve's 2003 Survey of Small Business Finances, we estimate the joint effects of traditional capital structure determinants and manager age, gender, education, business experience, sophistication, and wealth on the capital structure of single-owner corporations. By calculating the marginal contribution of personal risk tolerance, we demonstrate that owner preference contributes meaningfully to the explained variation in capital structure decisions.

Correlates Of Inter-Generational Transmission Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nivin A. Qudeimat-Tercero Dec 2010

Correlates Of Inter-Generational Transmission Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nivin A. Qudeimat-Tercero

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Intimate partner violence is a prevalent phenomenon plaguing society, with its negative effects being propagated from one generation to the next. The author hypothesized that there exists a qualitative correlation between male children who witnessed adult males perpetrate violence against females in childhood and subsequent adult onset perpetration of violence against women. After conducting a meta-analysis of 44 peer-reviewed articles, the author found that: (a) children who witnessed interparental IPV manifested increased disturbed behaviors as well as cognitive and emotional impairment corresponding to the severity and frequency of the episodes witnessed; and (b) men who witnessed parental IPV were more …

Intra-Industry Trade And The Open Economy, Sven W. Arndt Dec 2010

Intra-Industry Trade And The Open Economy, Sven W. Arndt

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper explores the implications of cross-border production networks and vertical intra-industry trade for macroeconomic adjustment and for the effectiveness of monetary and fiscal stabilization policies. Vertical intra-industry trade introduces direct links between countries’ imports and exports and thereby affects the manner in which trade balances respond to variations in exchange rates and to global shocks more generally. The precise effects depend on whether the direct link runs from exports to imports or vice versa. In the U.S., for example, exports of auto parts and components rise with an increase of imports of passenger vehicles from Mexico. This produces a …
