On The Solution Of A Class Of Large Body Problems With Full Or Partial Circular Symmetry By Using The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (Fdtd) Method, Wenhua Yu, Dean Arakaki, Raj Mittra Dec 2010

On The Solution Of A Class Of Large Body Problems With Full Or Partial Circular Symmetry By Using The Finite-Difference Time-Domain (Fdtd) Method, Wenhua Yu, Dean Arakaki, Raj Mittra

Electrical Engineering

This paper presents an efficient method to accurately solve large body scattering problems with partial circular symmetry. The method effectively reduces the computational domain from three to two dimensions by using the reciprocity theorem. It does so by dividing the problem into two parts: a larger 3-D region with circular symmetry, and a smaller 2-D region without circular symmetry. An finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm is used to analyze the circularly symmetric 3-D case, while a method of moments (MoM) code is employed for the nonsymmetric part of the structure. The results of these simulations are combined via the reciprocity theorem …

Cloning Of A Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Marker Into A Rna Interference Construct To Test Whether The Photoreceptor Chlamyrhodopsin Is Involved In Circadian Clock Resetting, Shravya Reddy Maddi Dec 2010

Cloning Of A Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Marker Into A Rna Interference Construct To Test Whether The Photoreceptor Chlamyrhodopsin Is Involved In Circadian Clock Resetting, Shravya Reddy Maddi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a unicellular eukaryotic green alga, serves as a model organism to study the circadian clock in plants and animals. Rhodopsins are blue/green-light photoreceptors also found in C. reinhardtii. Chlamyrhodopsin (COP), the most abundant eyespot protein, was reported to have no role in the phototactic and photophobic responses in C. reinhardtii. Its function is yet unknown.
In the present study, we hypothesized that the function of COP is to mediate entrainment of the circadian clock by light. In order to test this hypothesis, a C. reinhardtii selection marker conferring resistance to the antibiotic paromomycin was cloned …

The Scavenging Behaviour Of The Australian Raven (Corvus Coronoides): Patterns And Influencing Factors, R. Christopher O'Brien, Alexande Larcombe, Jan Meyer, Shari L. Forbes, Ian Dadour

Forensic Science Publications

The Australian Raven (Corvus coronoides) is a widespread, abundant corvid which is often considered a pest species, due to the thought that it predates on livestock, ruin crops, and is often seen feeding on refuse, in both urban and rural areas. The species is known to feed on a range of material from seeds in ploughed fields to human refuse and decomposing organic material. A large proportion of its diet consists of carrion, and as such, the Australian Raven is an effective detrivorous species capable of removing and consuming dead and decomposing carcasses. This research examined the scavenging …

Capacity Reduction And Fire Load Factors For Lrfd Of Steel Members Exposed To Fire, Shahid Iqbal, Ronald S. Harichandran

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

A general reliability-based methodology is proposed for developing capacity reduction and fire load factors for design of steel members exposed to fire. The effect of active fire protection systems (e.g., sprinklers, smoke and heat detectors, fire brigade, etc.) in reducing the probability of occurrence of a severe fire is included. The design parameters that significantly affect the fire design of steel members are chosen as random variables. Raw experimental data published in the literature was analyzed to obtain the statistics of parameters for which no statistical information was available in the literature. Model errors associated with the thermal analysis models …

[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] Pex5 Mutants That Differentially Disrupt Pts1 And Pts2 Peroxisomal Matrix Protein Import In Arabidopsis, Bibi Khan, Bethany Zolman

Biology Department Faculty Works

PEX5 and PEX7 are receptors required for the import of peroxisome-bound proteins containing one of two peroxisomal targeting signals (PTS1 or PTS2). To better understand the role of PEX5 in plant peroxisomal import, we characterized the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) pex5-10 mutant, which has a T-DNA insertion in exon 5 of the PEX5 gene. Sequencing results revealed that exon 5, along with the T-DNA, is removed in this mutant, resulting in a truncated pex5 protein. The pex5-10 mutant has germination defects and is completely dependent on exogenous Suc for early seedling establishment, based on poor utilization of seed-storage fatty acids. This …

A Multiscale Model Of The Thick Ascending Limb, Aniel Nieves-Gonzalez Dec 2010

A Multiscale Model Of The Thick Ascending Limb, Aniel Nieves-Gonzalez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A multiscale, cell-based mathematical model of the thick ascending limb (TAL) was implementedand used to estimate the efficiency of Na+ transport along the TAL, to examinewhat determines transport efficiency, and to study the dynamical properties of the TAL.The TAL model consists of epithelial cell models that represent all major solutes and transportpathways. The model equations are based on mass conservation and electroneutralityconstraints. Empirical descriptions of cell volume regulation (CVR), pH control, and tubuloglomerularfeedback (TGF) system are implemented in the model. Transport efficiencywas calculated as the ratio of total net Na+<\super> transport to transcellular Na+<\super> transport. The results show that: 1) …

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Pprocessing Parameters On Adhesion Performance Of Polyetherbased Tpu Over Mold On To Polycarbonate Substrate, Mukund Purushottam Patankar Dec 2010

Evaluation Of The Effect Of Pprocessing Parameters On Adhesion Performance Of Polyetherbased Tpu Over Mold On To Polycarbonate Substrate, Mukund Purushottam Patankar

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The overmolding process involves the use of two separate materials to form one cohesive component. The final product is a single piece, made out of polymers with very different mechanical properties that must be safe and permanently bonded together throughout its useful life. The first shot is generally a hard plastic and is referred to as a substrate the second material is generally a soft thermoplastic elostomer (TPE) and referred as overmold. The rigid substrate is used for structural purposes, and the softer materials are expected to take care of the user comfort. Overmolding can add immeasurable value to product …

Andes Virus Regulation Of Cellular Micrornas Contributes To Hantavirus-Induced Endothelial Cell Permeability, Timothy Pepini Dec 2010

Andes Virus Regulation Of Cellular Micrornas Contributes To Hantavirus-Induced Endothelial Cell Permeability, Timothy Pepini

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Hantaviruses infect human endothelial cells (ECs) and cause two diseases marked by vascular permeability defects: hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Vascular permeability occurs in the absence of EC lysis suggesting that hantaviruses alter normal EC fluid barrier functions. Hantavirus-infected endothelial cells are hyper-responsive to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) which directs changes in EC adherens junctions and induces paracellular permeability. However, VEGF-directed responses are regulated by cellular microRNAs (miRNAs). The hantavirus nucleocapsid (N) protein binds cellular and viral RNA and reportedly co-localizes with P-bodies where miRNAs mature. These findings suggest that hantaviruses may modify …

Joint Application Of Concentration And Isotope Ratios To Investigate The Global Atmospheric Carbon Monoxide Budget: An Inverse Modeling Approach, Key Hong Park Dec 2010

Joint Application Of Concentration And Isotope Ratios To Investigate The Global Atmospheric Carbon Monoxide Budget: An Inverse Modeling Approach, Key Hong Park

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Since carbon monoxide is one of the major sinks of hydroxyl radicals, it has been used as a proxy of hydroxyl radicals, which largely control the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere. Thus, CO-related chemistry directly or indirectly affects the abundance of other atmospheric trace gases including methane, halocarbons and tropospheric ozone. Carbon monoxide has also been shown its usefulness as a tracer of transport of pollution and fire emissions and as an additional constraint for CO2 fluxes. Variations in the global CO cycle are closely related to the change of total source strengths. Previously, to estimate the global CO …

Analysis Of Supercomputers And Development Of A Novel Network, Reid Powell Dec 2010

Analysis Of Supercomputers And Development Of A Novel Network, Reid Powell

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As supercomputers have reached nearly 300,000 cores with 2 petaflops in Linpack performance in June 2010, energy consumption and temperature control are posing a developmental bottleneck. We retrospectively and comparatively examine all of the available data contained in the Green500 list that launched in November 2007, and the Top500 list, and propose a novel representation and analysis of the data, highlighting major evolutionary trends. With these new insights, we introduce a new technique for generating more efficient networks by systematically interlacing bypass rings to torus networks (iBT networks). The resulting network can improve the original torus network by reducing the network …

Measures Of Immune System Status In Young-Of-The-Year Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) From Long Island Coastal Bays, Jaime Solange Romany Dec 2010

Measures Of Immune System Status In Young-Of-The-Year Winter Flounder (Pseudopleuronectes Americanus) From Long Island Coastal Bays, Jaime Solange Romany

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The immune status of YOY winter flounder was evaluated in fish collected from six areas around Long Island, including Jamaica Bay, Little Neck Bay, Manhasset Bay, Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson, and Shinnecock Bay; sites geographically distributed from west to east, representing a large gradient in urbanization, and thus likely contaminant inputs from the water shed. Fish were collected from June to October, and expression of pleurocidin, a gene coding for an antimicrobial peptide found in skin mucus, as well as antimicrobial activity of skin mucus assessed in individual fish from each site. Cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) expression was also measured as …

Shear-Induced Platelet Sensitization And The Development Of An Activation Model, Jawaad Sheriff Dec 2010

Shear-Induced Platelet Sensitization And The Development Of An Activation Model, Jawaad Sheriff

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Increased shear stresses are a hallmark of flow conditions in blood recirculating devices, and patients implanted with such devices require lifelong anticoagulation to counteract the high risk of thromboembolism. Despite this limitation, manufacturers only test for hemolysis in order to optimize device design. This is primarily due to the paucity of data regarding platelet damage, a major precursor of thromboembolism. Several studies have shown that platelets exposed to constant shear stress for a specified duration become activated. However, post high-shear stress activation behavior of platelets, which is critical to understanding increased thrombotic risk associated with blood recirculating devices, is poorly …

Carbon Dioxide Multiphase Flows In Microfluidic Devices, Ruopeng Sun Dec 2010

Carbon Dioxide Multiphase Flows In Microfluidic Devices, Ruopeng Sun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In this thesis, we experimentally studied the mass transfer during CO2 absorption into water, ethanol, methanol and silicone oil under slug flow in microchannels. We showed that the initial bubble size is determined by the liquid fraction and channel geometry, while the CO2 diffusion rate is determined by the gas pressure and liquid properties, such as the Henry's constant and the diffusion coefficient. The reduction of the gas void fractionΑG along the flow direction and the transformation of segmented flows into dilute bubbly flows was observed and predicted. In high viscosity liquids, we showed the liquid film …

Transcriptional Regulation Of Seprase In Melanoma By The Canonical Transforming Growth Factor- (Tgf- ) Signaling Pathway, Shaun Tulley Dec 2010

Transcriptional Regulation Of Seprase In Melanoma By The Canonical Transforming Growth Factor- (Tgf- ) Signaling Pathway, Shaun Tulley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The tumor invasive phenotype driven by seprase expression/activity has been widely examined in an array of malignant tumor cell types, however very little is known about the regulatory mechanisms governing this critical protease. Human seprase (also named fibroblast activation protein-alpha (FAPΑ); antiplasmin-cleaving enzyme (APCE); dipeptidyl prolyl peptidase 5 (DPP5) is a 170 kDa homodimeric glycoprotein consisting of two 97 kDa subunits. Seprase is expressed at high levels by tumor cells and stromal fibroblasts in a variety of invasive carcinomas, but is essentially absent or undetectable in normal tissues except during active tissue remodeling in embryogenesis, and in the early stages …

Reading Into Race: Unsettled Reading And The Performance Of"Race", Julie Burton Swift Dec 2010

Reading Into Race: Unsettled Reading And The Performance Of"Race", Julie Burton Swift

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Reading, race, and the primary productive link between the two--performativity--are the subject of this dissertation. By reading the formative discourse of phrenology and Ethnology, as well as nineteenth-century textbooks which teach reading, I suggest a context in which reading operates as an expressive framework for the problematics of race. In considering selected works of Edgar Allan Poe, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Jacobs, and Herman Melville, I examine the uses to which reading is put, not only to elaborate, but to perform race. By looking at unsettled reading--breakdowns of reading, failures to read, readings that prove unaccountable to the text--I emphasize the …

Distribution Of Number Of Rare Variants Appearing In Cases But Not Controls In Genome-Wide Studies, Wenjie Xu Dec 2010

Distribution Of Number Of Rare Variants Appearing In Cases But Not Controls In Genome-Wide Studies, Wenjie Xu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Whole genome sequencing and whole exome sequencing are developing techniques to explore the associations between rare variants and complex diseases. The number of variants that are expected to appear in a randomly selected group that do not appear in a different group randomly selected from the same population has unknown mean and variance. Expressions for these quantities are derived here. Numerical values are calculated assuming that the frequency of a rare variant has a beta distribution using parameters estimated for four populations. Extensions to the number of variants that appear in r ( r >1) members of a randomly selected …
