From The Classroom To The Courtroom: Intelligent Design And The Constitution, Jay D. Wexler

Although the Supreme Court of the United States has never developed a single clear test for determining what kinds of state action violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, schools that attempt to teach or introduce intelligent design as a purportedly scientific alternative to evolution likely fall afoul of the First Amendment's commands. Under the Court's most relevant precedent, Edwards v. Aguillard, teaching intelligent design violates the Establishment Clause because, among other things, there is an enormous disconnect between the purpose of teaching intelligent design and its effect. Moreover, public school teachers do not possess any First Amendment right …

From Words To Worlds: Exploring Constitutional Functionality By Beau Breslin, Robert L. Tsai

This is a review of Beau Breslin's book, "From Words to Worlds: Exploring Constitutional Functionality" (Johns Hopkins, 2009). As an antidote to what he believes to be scholarly marginalization of the "unique" aspects of a written constitution, Breslin focuses attention on seven functions of such a legal text: transforming existing orders, conveying collective aspirations, designing institutions, mediating conflict, recognizing claims of subnational communities, empowering social actors, and constraining governmental authority. This review briefly critiques Breslin's functional approach and discusses two of the more pressing goals of modern constitutionalism: managing social conflict and preserving cultural heritage.

Vitamins are organic compounds essential for healthy metabolism and growth. Additionally, some vitamins also function as antioxidants. In particular, the antioxidant vitamins A (p-carotene) and E (a-tocopherol) are known to enhance the immune response of many animals as well as humans. However, there is relatively little research linking these immune-enhancing effects to domestic turkeys facing parasitic infections, such as coccidiosis. Coccidiosis in birds is expensive to treat, costing the worldwide poultry industry hundreds of millions of dollars annually. Coccidia of the genus Eimeria are protozoans that parasitize poultry via the intestinal tract, causing deleterious effects to survival such as lesioning, …

The traditional view of cerebellar processing has been that it plays a role in motor planning and function, now the cerebellum is also believed to be involved in spatial learning and cognition. Like the cerebellum’s involvement in cognition the role of estrogen in cerebellar functioning has only recently been investigated. The cerebellum normally has low levels of estrogen but aromatase activity is upregulated after brain injury, increasing estrogen levels. This upregulation after injury suggests that estrogen could be involved in neuroprotection. This thesis examines how F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the American Dream in his fiction and how he establishes the inequality of the class system as the force which ruins the American Dream. Since we normally perceive America to be a land of opportunity and a land of equality, we often overlook the hierarchy of social classes in America. However, inappropriate inhibition or activation can result in various pathological conditions. The prevalence of the mythic hero’s journey in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series was investigated in order to determine how an archaic mythic form manifests itself in a contemporary literary series. Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces was consulted for a detailed account of the mythic hero’s journey, and several scholarly analyses were consulted for a closer examination of Rowling’s series. This thesis studies The Merchant of Venice with particular regards to the role of social bonds in the community of the play and in the actions of the characters. These bonds serve as ties that connect the characters to each other and also to the dominant social structure of their world—a structure that is patriarchal, class-based, and ostensibly Christian.
