President Obama's election and the Democrats' takeover of Congress, including what was their theoretically filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, have encouraged organized labor and other traditional Democratic supporters to make a vigorous move for some long-desired legislation. Most attention has focused on the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA). As initially proposed, the EFCA would enable unions to get bargaining rights through signed authorization cards rather than a secret-ballot election, and would provide for the arbitration of first-contract terms if negotiations fail to produce an agreement after four months. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role and status of women in Alachua County, Florida, from 1821 through 1860. The secondary literature suggests that women throughout America had virtually no public role to play in antebellum society except in limited circumstances in some mature urban, commercial settings. The study reviewed U.S. Census materials, slave ownership records, and land ownership records as a means to examine the family structures, the mobility and persistence of persons and households, and the economic status of women, particularly including woman headed households. This species is a popular fruit crop in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines. This article analyzes poetry during the Tang dynasty by using the cultural dimension as an analytical lens. I have selected eightyseven Tang poems dealing with war that were compiled in the Complete Tang Poetry (全唐诗 Quán Táng Shī), commissioned by the Kangxi 康熙 emperor of the Qing 清 dynasty (1644-1911 AD). The research paper takes the approach of discourse studies, which postulates that language, literature, culture, and society are inseparably related. This article studies women's power and negotiation illustrated in lovelorn heroines' roles in Noh plays, particularly those composed by Zeami (1363?—1443?), the most famous Japanese playwright during the fourteenth century. This article examines Zeami's eight Noh plays, analyzing the causes of separation and the heroine's sadness in these stories, to illustrate the gender power and social status of Japanese women at the time.

This paper analyzes selected works of Indian children's literature, both short stories and novels, to tackle the problem of sexism. Sexism constitutes discrimination between the sexes, preventing girls and women from their full emotional and intellectual development in their struggle for a full humanity in their own right. This struggle finds representation even in contemporary children's literature. The main characters in the works selected for this presentation are nearly all female, though one interesting case involves the evolution of a male protagonist in gender awareness. This article examines some major novels by Khai Hung, a well known writer in Vietnam in the period 1930-1945, to glean social developments in Vietnam during this period. While there was a significant social transformation in the public domain, as shown by scholarly works by David Marr and Nguyen Van Ky, Khai Hung's novels show that in the families of the mandarinate (the Confucian educated literati, or members of the traditional ruling elite and their families), traditional values managed to survive and even to remain dominant in some cases. This thesis develops mixture model clustering algorithms scalable to data sets that do not fit into the computer memory buffer. Two algorithms, FlexClust and FlexClustMix, are proposed for clustering very large continuous and mixed data sets respectively. The basic framework of the algorithms is to scale down data incrementally using data compression, and incorporates the later compressed data into the current model with the ability to recover new clusters that have been missed out in the earlier compressed data. A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF MS) technique was used to simultaneously determine six types of carbamates and organophosphorus pesticides residue in vegetables. The pesticides were extracted by ultrasonic solvent extraction method using ethyl acetate as the extraction solvent followed by Florisil column clean up. Four types of common consumed vegetables from local hypermarket were used to study the recovery. The accurate mass measurement and retention time were used to identify and determine the empirical formula of the pesticides. A slightly branched urethane acrylate macromer (UAM) was synthesized by reacting palm oil-based polyol with excess amounts of polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) to form urethane prepolymer, then reacted with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the urethane and grafted acrylate groups. 0.2% by weight of camphoroquinone (CQ) and 0.8% by weight of ethyl-4-N,N-dimethylamino-benzoate (4EDMAB) by weight were added to render the experimental resins light-curable. Their viscosity, percentage of degree of conversion (%DC) and cross-linking density (CLD), percentage of volumetric polymerization shrinkage (%VPS), water sorption and solubility, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity and toughness were determined and compared to …

Air-water inter-phase mass transport of organic contaminants is often an important factor in their environmental fate and behaviour. The equilibrium situation is given by the Henry's Law Constant of the compound, but is rarely attained under environmental conditions. Approach to equilibrium is commonly described by the two-film theory involving molecular (Fickian) diffusion through thin stagnant films adjacent to the air-water interface. This theory is formulated in terms of mass transfer coefficients and fugacity transport parameters. Penetration and Surface Renewal Theories of mass transfer are also discussed. Durian Peel As Biosorbent For Removal Of Cadmium Ions From Aqueous Solution, Wanna Saikaew, Pairat Kaewsarn

The ability of durian peel to remove Cd(II) ions from aqueous solution by biosorption was investigated. The sorption capacities at different solution pH, agitation speed, temperatures, initial cadmium ions concentrations and contact time were evaluated on a batch scale basis. At pH 5 and agitation speed 150 rpm, the cadmium ions removal reached at a maximum value. Increases in cadmium capacity with increasing temperature indicated endothermic nature of the biosorption process. The equilibrium was better described by the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum biosorption capacity of 18.55 mg g-1. The biosorption was relatively quick about 15 min to reach …

This study was aimed to evaluate the feasibility of an iron-phosphate coating on pyrite surfaces for inhibiting an oxidation that is expected to prevent acid mine drainage (AMD). Prior to the experiments, pyrite samples (av. 425-850 µm in size) were mixed with sand (av. 1-2 mm in size) with a ratio of 1:4. Coating process was conducted in batch experiments that were treating with various concentrations of coating solutions, i.e., hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium acetate (NaAc) and potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) at different contact times. A thorough study on Bismuth-based Erbium-doped fiber (Bi-EDF) is presented for wide-band amplifiers and multi-wavelength fiber laser applications. This fiber allows high Erbium ions concentration to be doped without a significant concentration quenching effect. The high refractive index characteristic in the Bi-EDF has broadened the emission spectrum of Erbium ions to achieve a broader gain spectrum up to extended L-band region compared to normal silica-based Erbium-doped fiber (EDF). The Bi-EDFA performances have been investigated in terms of power conversion efficiency (PCE), quantum conversion efficiency (QCE), gain and noise figure.
