On 25 April every year Australians and New Zealanders pause to remember the anniversary of the landings at Gallipoli in 1915. ANZAC Day1 is named after the acronym for the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and has developed into Australia's national day. For outsiders, it is a somewhat difficult concept to grasp. We remember a generation of young Australian males that died so as to give "birth" to the nation. The academic scholarship available on genocide is limited. Alexander Hinton is one of the few anthropologists who has written extensively about genocide; his writing explores the roles that anthropology can play with respect to genocide from both a preventative and a prescriptive perspective. Using Hinton�s work as a foundation, this thesis will explore the role that anthropologists can play in preventing genocide, investigating the connections between everyday practices of violence and more extreme derivatives of violence. I will focus my lens on the Rwandan genocide, using this as a template to evaluate anthropology�s place in the study of genocide due …

The pastoralists of Mongolia have recently gone through a dramatic shift in their economy and government � one arguably even more challenging to their traditional subsistence economy than the Soviet era that preceded it. Mongolian nomadic pastoralism is now dealing with global capitalism. This thesis will analyze this transition�s effect on the nomadic pastoralists of Mongolia. It will focus on the tension between the traditional methods of the pastoralists and the capitalist policies that are being employed in modern Mongolia.

The following paper addresses the issues of late antique understandings of religious authority through an analysis of ancient conceptions and representations of authority in religious literature. This examination entails the comparison and juxtaposition of several polytheistic and Christian texts from different authors, focusing on literary and rhetorical constructions of religious authority. Each chapter is dedicated to a religious subject, the holy man, the sacred text, and ritual, which together form a loose conceptual basis of religion and provide a rich understanding of religious identity in late antiquity. Targeting Strategies Of Terrorist Groups A Comparative Case Study Of Northern Ireland And Spain, Stephen Quirke

This study addresses the question of why terrorist groups target civilians by analyzing the targeting strategies of nationalist terrorist groups in Northern Ireland and Spain. Nationalist terrorist groups are considered to be the most likely to apply violence in a way that preserves and maximizes their base of support. This study tested the hypothesis that greater levels of violence inflicted on the supporting communities of these groups cause supporters to become radicalized, thus allowing the groups to engage in increasingly indiscriminate violence without sacrificing public support. Microwave Spectroscopy Of Mono-Substituted Benzenes At Room Temperature, Benjamin Reinhold

A significant challenge in room temperature microwave spectroscopy is the large number of transitions in a spectrum at 298 K. At these temperatures, multiple vibrational states are populated, each of which has its own distinct spectrum. Assignment of these spectra can be accomplished through a combination of experimental and computational techniques. Room temperature microwave spectra of fluorobenzene, iodobenzene, and anisole were collected and analyzed. For fluorobenzene the fit parameters for previously assigned states were refined. For iodobenzene, in addition to assigning new lines to transitions, the hyperfine terms for three excited states were resolved. Finally for anisole the fit parameters …

During the first millennium, a rare kind of literature evolved in the Islamic world that provides a fascinating window on the interest and importance of material objects. A unique example of this literature, entitled Kitab al-Hadaya wa al-Tuhaf [Book of Gifts and Rarities] was translated into English, annotated and published in 1996 by Kuwaiti curator and scholar Ghada al Hijjawi al-Qaddumi. It is an anthology of anecdotes referring to the period between the sixth century and the twelfth century, probably compiled in the late twelfth century by an official in the Islamic Egyptian government.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether proportional cancer incidence is greater among Gulf War veterans compared with non-Gulf War veterans.

METHODS: Files obtained from the Defense Manpower Data Center included data for 621,902 veterans who were deployed to the Persian Gulf during the 1990 to 1991 Gulf War (August 2, 1990, to March 1, 1991) and 746,248 non-Gulf War veteran controls. Identification of veterans who received a cancer diagnosis between 1991 and 2006 was accomplished through record linkage of the Defense Manpower Data Center dataset with files from 28 state cancer registries and the Department of …

Were mistakes made in the preparation of the controversial OLC memoranda? There is no question about it; they were very serious mistakes, and they have harmed this country. But I think part of the explanation is that the authors of the "torture" memoranda lacked sufficient expertise in national security law, and honestly believed that a conflict involving more than seventy-five sovereign nations was "international" in scope. Israel's extensive use of the Cluster Munitions in the 2006 Lebanon War provided a major impetus for drafting the 2008 Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM). As the first decade of the twenty-first century evolved, Ireland was one of only two countries in the European Union that did not have legal, regulated casinos. The Irish Gaming and Lotteries Act of 1956 does not prohibit games with equal chances. Moreover, games can be conducted lawfully, according to the Act, if promoters assess minor seat charges to players, and “the promoter derives no personal profit from the promotion of the game.” Additionally, Part III of the 1956 law indicates that amusement centers can have slot machines that award small prizes. These concluding reflections on the essays in The Death of Sacred Texts consider evidence that the disposal of secular books also evokes serious concern. There is an inherent tension in most literate cultures between the idea of a book or enduring text on the one hand and the possibility of its disposal or destruction on the other. Disposing of books transgresses inhibitions reinforced by family, school, media, and government. The concern for book preservation involves respect for culture(s), veneration of traditions, and, at its root, the preservation of cultural values. Our core claim, then, is this: Habermas conceives the "Kantian project" to be one of securing global peace and upholding basic human rights through strengthening and expanding supranational and transnational institutions. In substance, he is offering a kind of Kantian world federalism as the way forward for the global community of states. We consider that approach fundamentally mistaken. In our view, democracy-promotion is clearly the better path. It recognizes the necessity and desirability of a plurality of independent nation states.
