Choreographed Cartography: Translation, Feminized Labor, And Digital Literacy In Half/Angel’S The Knitting Map, Deborah Barkun, Jools Gilson Jan 2010

Choreographed Cartography: Translation, Feminized Labor, And Digital Literacy In Half/Angel’S The Knitting Map, Deborah Barkun, Jools Gilson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Knitting Map was a large-scale, durational textile installation by the Irish-based performance production company half/angel that took place during Cork’s year as European Capital of Culture (2005). Bringing a decade of experience with emergent technologies and art practice, half/angel developed technologies to connect the physical busy-ness of Cork City (captured via a series of CCTV cameras) with correspondingly complex knitting stitches (stitches became more complex when the city was busy), and Cork weather (captured by a weather station) to yarn color. The resulting textile was an abstract documentation of a year in the life of an Irish city, in …

Traversing Locality/Navigating Borders, Kelly Thompson Jan 2010

Traversing Locality/Navigating Borders, Kelly Thompson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

What is it to be located? What are the markers of communication that travel with us, or that we seek locally? Recent art practices that address notions of geography, migration, settlement and travel in an increasingly ‘globalized’ and mediatized world are presented in this paper. With Montreal, Canada as the site of location, this research explores ways in which experience intermingles in the poetics of visual translation of ‘real world’ imagery into textile-based responses. Travel and ‘the local’ suggests a map, a rhizome, consisting of multiple entry points “entirely oriented toward an experimentation in contact with the real”, as Deleuze …

Capturing The Landscape : Textiles For The Australian Fashion Industry, Liz Williamson Jan 2010

Capturing The Landscape : Textiles For The Australian Fashion Industry, Liz Williamson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Textiles are intricately interlaced with fashion, giving texture, drape, feel, detail and color to garments. In Australia, tracing the place of textiles in the fashion industry presents a complex story of materials, individual designers, studio practices, commercial production, textiles, art, craft and design. Overwhelmingly, makers of textiles for fashion have shown a desire to represent Australia, its character and spirit in cloth.

This paper documents research into how textiles have been designed and made for fashion over the last six decades, focusing on designers whose practice specializes in fashion fabrics. Many of these artists and designers gained experience overseas, returning …

The Transitional Museum As Urban Parasitism, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce Jan 2010

The Transitional Museum As Urban Parasitism, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce

Sociology Faculty Publication Series

In a recent talk at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, I presented to the public an initial approach to the concept of the Transitional Museum, one that I have developed over time in collaboration with Mauricio Rodriguez-Anza and Vivianne Falco. This concept grew out of our efforts at defining the main features and goals of the new Anza Falco Museum of Art and Design, and particularly out of our struggle with the word "alternative" as an all-embracing, defining category with the necessary components to project to the world a unique and interdisciplinary style both in its architectural form …

Queering Hegemonies Of Gender And Cultural Identity Through A Critical Adaptation Of Maxine Hong Kingston's Novel The Woman Warrior, Julia Valentina Salvador Jan 2010

Queering Hegemonies Of Gender And Cultural Identity Through A Critical Adaptation Of Maxine Hong Kingston's Novel The Woman Warrior, Julia Valentina Salvador

Master's Theses

This thesis explores hegemonic discourses associated with the constructs of gender, culture, and transglobal migration from China to the United States and how these discourses might be made visible, resisted, internalized, reappropriated, and queered through live performance. This thesis used the methodology of critical adaptation and adapted Maxine Hong Kingston's novel The Woman Warrior (1976) into a one-woman performance that explored hegemonic social structures of gender, culture, and transglobal migration and the ways in which identity is constructed and performed. Through a critical adaptation and performance of literature, this thesis reflects, expands, and raises some of the nuanced issues of …

43 | Nahal Haggit: A Roman And Mamluk Farmstead In The Southern Carmel, Jon Seligman Jan 2010

43 | Nahal Haggit: A Roman And Mamluk Farmstead In The Southern Carmel, Jon Seligman

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume presents the results of three seasons of IAA salvage excavations during 1992–1993 at this farmstead site in the Ramot Menashe region. It was occupied in three phases during the Early and Middle Roman and Mamluk periods. Its first occupants included Jews or Samaritans, as evidenced by miqva’ot. It was abandoned after the First or Second Jewish Revolt, then resettled, possibly by Roman veterans. In the 13th century a small village was established here within the Mamluk-controlled region and abandoned sometime later. The finds include pottery and glass vessels, coins and other small finds.

The Impact Of Environmental Noise On Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Surgical Performance, Ka-Chun Siu, I. H. Suh, Mukul Mukherjee, D. Oleynikov, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

Background. An operating room is a noisy environment. How noise affects performance during robotic surgery remains unknown. We investigated whether noise during training with the da Vinci surgical robot (Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA) would affect the performance of simple operative tasks by the surgeon.

Methods. Twelve medical students performed 3 inanimate operative tasks (bimanual carrying, suture tying, and mesh alignment) on the da Vinci Surgical System with or without the presence of noise. Prerecorded noise from an actual operating room was used. The kinematics of the robotic surgical instrument tips and the muscle activation patterns of the subjects were …

Sexting And The First Amendment, John A. Humbach Jan 2010

Sexting And The First Amendment, John A. Humbach

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

"Sexting" and other teen autopornography are becoming a widespread phenomenon, with perhaps 20% of teenagers admitting to producing nude or semi-nude pictures of themselves and an ever greater proportion, perhaps as much as 50%, having received such pictures from friends and classmates. It is, moreover, beginning to result in criminal prosecutions. Given the reality of changing social practices, mores, and technology utilization, today's pornography laws are a trap for unwary teens and operate, in effect, to criminalize a large fraction of America's young people. As such, these laws and prosecutions represent a stark example of the contradictions that can occur …

Save As... Knowledge And Transmission In The Age Of Digital Technologies, Diana Taylor

Imagining America

Diana Taylor, university professor and professor of Performance Studies and Spanish, New York University, provides a rich entry point into complex questions about digital media and its implications for scholarly practice. Drawing on her experience with the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, a multinational collaboration of artists and scholars grounded in an on-line archive of performance work across the Americas, Taylor insists that we need to imagine communities that are not only local or national and publics that are not exclusive to the present. Attending to the ways in which digital innovations inflect earlier technologies for creating and transmitting …

Why Cherry Picking Never Leads To Harmonisation: The Case Of The Limitations On Copyright Under Directive 2001/29/Ec, Lucie Guibault

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

The article examines whether the norms laid down in the Directive in relation to the exceptions and limitations on copyright and related rights can be conducive to a sensible degree of harmonisation across the European Union. Before discussing the degree of harmonisation achieved so far by the Directive, the first part gives a short overview of the main characteristics of the list of exceptions and limitations contained in Article 5 of the Directive. A comprehensive review of the implementation of each limitation by the Member States is beyond the scope of this article. The following section takes a closer look …

Live Long And Prosper: A Health Promotion Group Treatment For Reducing Health Risk Behaviors In Veterans Diagnosed With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Assessment Strategy, Marissa Burgoyne Jan 2010

Live Long And Prosper: A Health Promotion Group Treatment For Reducing Health Risk Behaviors In Veterans Diagnosed With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Assessment Strategy, Marissa Burgoyne

Theses and Dissertations

The mortality rate due to behavioral causes among veterans diagnosed with chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is much higher than the rate found among the normal population. In particular, veterans diagnosed with chronic PTSD die more frequently from conditions related to substance abuse, such as Hepatitis C, blood diseases, violence, aggression, and suicide. In addition, rates of behaviorally-related diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease are high among veterans diagnosed with chronic PTSD. These findings highlight a need to promote healthy behavioral practices among veterans diagnosed with PTSD. A manualized health promotion group treatment for veterans with PTSD was …

Being In The World, Joseph Raz Jan 2010

Being In The World, Joseph Raz

Faculty Scholarship

Actions for which we are responsible constitute our engagement with the world as rational agents. What is the relationship between such actions and our capacities for rational agency? I take this to be a question about responsibility in a particular use of that term, which I shall call ‘responsibility’. We are not responsible for all our intentional actions (actions under hypnosis, for example), but we can nevertheless be responsible for actions we do not adequately control, for negligent actions, and for non‐intentional omissions. Appreciating this helps show that familiar principles of responsibility are false: those which delimit responsibility to intentional …

Abuse Of Rights: The Continental Drug And The Common Law, Anna Di Robilant Jan 2010

Abuse Of Rights: The Continental Drug And The Common Law, Anna Di Robilant

UC Law Journal

This Article deploys a comparative approach to question a widely shared understanding of the impact and significance of abuse of rights. First, it challenges the idea that abuse of rights is a peculiarly civilian "invention," absent in the common law. Drawing on an influential strand offunctionalist comparative law, the Article identifies the "functional equivalents of the doctrine in the variety of malice rules and reasonableness tests deployed by American courts in the late-nineteenth and earlytwentieth century in fields as diverse as water law, nuisance, tortious interference with contractual relations, and labor law. The Article investigates the reasons why in the …

Public Opinion, Cultural Change, And Constitutional Adjudication, Calvin Massey Jan 2010

Public Opinion, Cultural Change, And Constitutional Adjudication, Calvin Massey

UC Law Journal

When do courts pay attention to public opinion in deciding constitutional issues? When should courts do so? This Article provides a limited answer to those questions. Courts often pay attention to public opinion when deciding constitutional issues, especially when the issue is one that involves a challenge to a long-standing cultural norm. That pattern is present, for example, in each of Plessy v. Ferguson and Brown v. Board of Education. The Court changed its view of equal protection because public opinion about racial segregation changed. Today, the long-standing cultural understanding of marriage is challenged by those who claim that its …

The End Of Al Qaeda? Rethinking The Legal End Of The War On Terror, Adam Klein Jan 2010

The End Of Al Qaeda? Rethinking The Legal End Of The War On Terror, Adam Klein

National Security Law Program

As the war on terrorism approaches its second decade, the open-ended nature of the 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) has given rise to the legal question of when, and how, the conflict will end. The indeterminate nature of the conflict has raised fears that the war powers will continue to be exercised indefinitely-a prospect noted with concern by the Supreme Court in Boumediene v. Bush. The prevailing view among legal scholars is that under existing precedents, the AUMF and the concomitant war powers will continue indefinitely in force until the political branches officially declare the …
