Do You See What I Mean? Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis., Noel Fitzpatrick, Roisin Donnelly
Books/Book Chapters
This chapter explores a sociolinguistic approach to computer-mediated communication (CMC), by examining how higher education teachers use digital media to manage interpersonal interaction in their online courses, form impressions, shape and maintain relationships with their students. Previous studies have often focused on the differences between online and offline interactions, though contemporary research is moving towards the view that CMC should be studied as an embedded linguistic form in everyday life. The study of language in these contexts is typically based on text-based forms of CMC, (often referred to as computer-mediated discourse analysis). Within this, focus in the chapter is on …

Forum Theatre Empowering Students To Speak, Act, And Know, Kaitlen M. Osburn
Forum Theatre Empowering Students To Speak, Act, And Know, Kaitlen M. Osburn
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
During the political turmoil of 1960s Brazil, theatre artist Augusto Boal created a new form of theatre to fight back against the oppressive government. Theatre of the Oppressed has now spread to almost every country in the world and has empowered many spect-actors (Boal‘s term for audience-turned-actors) to resist oppression. Boal‘s seminal text Theatre of the Oppressed opened the door to future expansions of Theatre of the Oppressed that combine drama therapy and politics with an already powerful arsenal of techniques. Combining this innovative methodology with education, I facilitated two Forum Theatre workshops at Warren Central High School and Warren …
Acquisition And Solidifcation Of Grammar And Vocabulary In Elementary French Classrooms Through Skit Performance, Jill Owen
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
In this study, groups of elementary French students in two classes at Western Kentucky University utilized two different methods of skit performance to demonstrate the importance of communicative activities in the foreign language classroom. The effectiveness of each method was assessed to determine which method helped the students acquire grammar and vocabulary concepts more readily. One method was to have students write their own skits using a chapter in their textbook. The other method was to give students an outline that they filled in and memorized. Surveys and quizzes were used to gather data. The results of which method proved …

The Good Soil Process: A Strategic Missional Process For American Institutional Churches, Keith Tilley
Doctor of Ministry
The Primary Readers: Christian laity and clergy who are interested in learning about the increasing institutionalization of American mainstream denominations and the problems associated with maintaining such large corporations. They include those who have a burden for postmodern 21st century North America as a mission field and wish to communicate the good news of Jesus Christ effectively. The two project artifacts will specifically be contextualized for smaller to mid-size rural East Texas communities of faith. Wartime China’S Resistance Against Japanese Aggression: Changing Interpretations And Perspectives, Jason Fortin, Tom Pagliarini
Wartime China’S Resistance Against Japanese Aggression: Changing Interpretations And Perspectives, Jason Fortin, Tom Pagliarini
Selected Student Research from 2010
In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria and established the puppet state of Manchukuo in northeast China. Hoping to avoid an all-out war with Japan, China pursued a policy of appeasement and did not resist the occupation of China. Nonetheless, in 1937 the Japanese launched a massive attack against Beijing and the eastern coastal cities of China and continued its assault until World War II ended in August 1945. This period, known as the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, has seen many shifts in its historical narrative. After Japan surrendered, a full-fledged civil war broke out between the Communist …
