Individual Profiling Of Perceived Tinnitus By Developing Tinnitus Analyzer Software, Baishali. Chaudbury Jan 2010

Individual Profiling Of Perceived Tinnitus By Developing Tinnitus Analyzer Software, Baishali. Chaudbury

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Tinnitus is a conscious perception of phantom sounds in the absence of external acoustic stimuli, and masking is one of the popular ways to treat it. Due to the variation in the perceived tinnitus sound from patient to patient, the usefulness of masking therapy cannot be generalized. Thus, it is important to first determine the feasibility of masking therapy on a particular patient, by quantifying the tinnitus sound, and then generate an appropriate masking signal. This paper aims to achieve this kind of individual profiling by developing interactive software -Tinnitus Analyzer, based on clinical approach. The developed software has been …

Intersection Of Gender And Italian/Americaness, Niki Caputo Wilson Jan 2010

Intersection Of Gender And Italian/Americaness, Niki Caputo Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation uses a multiperspectival approach that analyzes production, text, and audience consumption to explore representations of gender and ethnicity in The Home Box Office, Inc. (HBO) original program The Sopranos. I first present the social, political, and economic factors that contributed to the continued critical and commercial success of the show. The hybrid genre of the show - an intermingling of the gangster and soap opera genres - proves particularly significant in its representation of gender and ethnicity. Both textual and audience analyses allow me to respond to the question central to this dissertation: Does The Sopranos reinforce or …

John Updike, Cindy M. Rosen Jan 2010

John Updike, Cindy M. Rosen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There remain two recurring criticisms of John Updike's fiction. The first comes from feminist critics who condemn his negative portrayal of women, accusing his fiction of denigrating women. The second comes from late twentieth century critics who accuse him of avoiding political and historical discussions in his fiction. However, it is my contention that Updike is willing to address both of these concerns, and I arrive at such an argument by carefully analyzing his collection of short stories compiled in Too Far To Go: The Maples Stories. Within these stories, Updike's female characters illustrate the shifting gender paradigms over the …

Learning To Match Faces And Voices, Meredith. Davidson Jan 2010

Learning To Match Faces And Voices, Meredith. Davidson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines whether forming a single identity is crucial to learning to bind faces and voices, or if people are equally able to do so without tying this information to an identity. To test this, individuals learned paired faces and voices that were in one of three different conditions: True voice, Gender Matched, or Gender Mismatched conditions. Performance was measured in a training phase as well as a test phase, and results show that participants were able to learn more quickly and have higher overall performance for learning in the True Voice and Gender Matched conditions. During the test …

Lived Experience Of Mothers As They Sought Health Care For Their Internationally Adopted Children, Natalie L. Murphy Jan 2010

Lived Experience Of Mothers As They Sought Health Care For Their Internationally Adopted Children, Natalie L. Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

For the past 60 years, American citizens have turned to international adoption as a way to build their families. Unfortunately, international adoptees often spend the first months or years of their young lives in conditions of poverty and/or institutionalized care. Additionally, current U.S. immigration laws dictate that the children receive only a cursory health screening before arrival. As a result, many of the children adopted by Americans arrive to the United States with significant physical, emotional, behavioral, and developmental health problems. Twelve mothers who had adopted children internationally were interviewed for this study. Their stories of obtaining health care for …

Maintaining Self-Intergrity Through Superstitious Behavior, Ryan M. Moyer Jan 2010

Maintaining Self-Intergrity Through Superstitious Behavior, Ryan M. Moyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Superstitious behavior is still a common occurrence in modern society, seemingly impervious to intellectual progress that humans have made throughout history. While the desire to maintain a sense of control over one's environment has been investigated as one of the key motivations behind superstitious behavior, it has yet to be examined within the context of the self-concept. Threats to one's sense of control can also be construed as general threats to one's global sense of self-worth. Consequently, while superstitious behavior may be triggered by control threats, it may also occur as a result of any general threat to self-integrity. Moreover, …

Meryl Streep Mystique, Tracy. Allerton Jan 2010

Meryl Streep Mystique, Tracy. Allerton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis employs a star study of Meryl Streep, incorporating pertinent feminist, reception and culture-studies theories, to investigate biases within the Hollywood film industry. The actress has enjoyed a resurgence as a leading lady at age 61. Streep's star persona, acting prowess and career arc are examined across three theoretical platforms - production of culture, textual analysis, and audience analysis - or clues as to why she has been singled out among her peers. This thesis posits that Streep's unique star image and surge in popularity have helped her break out of hegemonic articulations of gender and aging that privilege …

Modes Of Self-Directed Attention, Urszula. Strawinska Jan 2010

Modes Of Self-Directed Attention, Urszula. Strawinska

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Establishing and maintaining a clear and stable view of oneself is one of the major goals that human beings are motivated by. Individuals' environment is overflowing with a variety of self-relevant feedback. Yet, humans are able to generalize their experience into idiosyncratic self-concept, that despite being the largest, and most complex of all cognitive structures provides a good frame of reference for regulation of action, emotion, and cognition. This research project examined a dynamic model of self-regulation that explains how humans manage to arrive at and maintain a coherent understanding of who they are and what they are like despite …

More Branches On The Oldest Tree, David. Bethea Jan 2010

More Branches On The Oldest Tree, David. Bethea

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

On Monday August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Southeast Louisiana bringing with it destruction to much of the Gulf Coast. While New Orleans, one of America's most culturally and artistically significant cities, was spared a direct hit, the subsequent flood devastated much of the city, home to many musicians. The devastation and stress from the storm established a situation and a motivator for creative response, and this dissertation illustrates that the music these musicians produce is a manifestation and continuation of New Orleans' cultural atmosphere. The city's historical allowance and celebration of freedom of expression permits New Orleans' …

Multiple Birth Families, Religion, And Cultural Hegemony, Emily M. Cittadino Jan 2010

Multiple Birth Families, Religion, And Cultural Hegemony, Emily M. Cittadino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Reality television programming chronicling the daily workings of multiple birth families within American culture has gained notoriety in recent years. Such programs, especially Discovery Health and TLC's 17, 18 Kids and Counting and TLC's Jon and Kate Plus Ei8ht, film, edit and broadcast the "everyday" life of these families. This research study focuses attention on hegemonic ideologies surrounding family values, motherhood, gender roles and religious faith, illuminated through textual and audience analysis. Working from an interdisciplinary approach combining feminist media and cultural studies, this study finds that hegemonic notions of family values, gender representations, religious faith and conceptions of motherhood …

Neuropsychological Examination Of The Effects Of Mindfulnesss Meditation In Elementary School Children, Sara Elizabeth Klco Jan 2010

Neuropsychological Examination Of The Effects Of Mindfulnesss Meditation In Elementary School Children, Sara Elizabeth Klco

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Many recent studies have confirmed that mindfulness meditation has wide ranging potential to improve the mental health and well-being of adults, though few studies have explored its potential to help younger populations. In the current study, a sample of 4th and 2nd grade students was trained in the techniques of mindfulness meditation. Baseline electroencephalograms (EEGs) were taken before the training, and again after a 10 week period of daily meditation practice. Measures of attention, creativity, affect, depression, behavioral inhibition/activation, emotion regulation, impulsive/aggressive behaviors, and social anxiety were also administered before and after the meditation practice period. Results indicate that mindfulness …

Neural And Behavioral Correlates Of Song Prosody, Reyna Leigh Gordon Jan 2010

Neural And Behavioral Correlates Of Song Prosody, Reyna Leigh Gordon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This dissertation studies the neural basis of song, a universal human behavior. The relationship of words and melodies in the perception of song at phonological, semantic, melodic, and rhythmic levels of processing was investigated using the fine temporal resolution of Electroencephalography (EEG). The observations reported here may shed light on a ubiquitous human experience and also inform the discussion of whether language and music share neural resources or recruit domain-specific neural mechanisms. Experiment 1 was designed to determine whether words and melody in song are processed interactively or independently. Participants listened to sung words in which the melodies and/or the …

Outreach Communication By Grassroots Environmental Organizations, Kimberly L. Estep Jan 2010

Outreach Communication By Grassroots Environmental Organizations, Kimberly L. Estep

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The negative impact of human activities on the Earth's ecosystems has gained more attention in the last few decades; in turn interest and scholarship in the area of environmental rhetoric has also grown. This case study provides an in-depth examination of outreach material generated by Tampa Bay Watch to determine if grassroots environmental organizations are using rhetorical appeals that recent scholarly literature argues are ineffective. Alternative rhetorical appeals are also examined for their persuasiveness. Using an open coding approach, the analysis finds that the organization used persuasive appeals which varied from those predicted by the literature, and that a combination …

Perceptions Of Animal Minds, Lauren N. Maurer Jan 2010

Perceptions Of Animal Minds, Lauren N. Maurer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Previous research into people's perceptions of animals suggests that people view animals most favorably when they perceive them as being mentally like humans. This thesis examined whether animals perceived as threatening are still seen to be mentally similar to humans, but more likely to experience mental states associated with anger and aggression. Using three separate measures of people's perceptions of animals, including one designed for this study, it was found that participants did indeed view the mental lives of animals differently when those animals were perceived to be threatening. Examination of the effect of the animal chosen showed that some …

Phonological Memory And The Development Of Vocabulary And Grammar In Young Spanish-English Bilinguals, Marisol. Parra Jan 2010

Phonological Memory And The Development Of Vocabulary And Grammar In Young Spanish-English Bilinguals, Marisol. Parra

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study tested the hypotheses that phonological memory contributes to vocabulary and grammatical development in young Spanish-English bilinguals, and that the relation between phonological memory and both vocabulary and grammar is language-specific. Phonological memory skill was the percentage of consonants correctly repeated (PCC) in English, and Spanish Nonword Repetition (NWR) tasks at 22 months. Vocabulary size and grammatical complexity were measured at 25 months using the English and Spanish versions for the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories. Nonword repetition accuracy was significantly related to both subsequent vocabulary size and grammatical complexity within and across languages after controlling for the percentage of …

Power Of Subtext And The Politics Of Closure, Adam. Berzak Jan 2010

Power Of Subtext And The Politics Of Closure, Adam. Berzak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis explores the ways that certain artists-including Joseph Conrad, Alan Moore, Richard Attenborough, and Francis Ford Coppola-break from their inherited traditions in order to speak from an alternative perspective to western discourse. Conventional narrative formulas prescribe that meaning will be revealed in a definitive end, but all of the texts discussed reveal other avenues through which it is discerned. In Heart of Darkness, the tension between two divergent narratives enables Conrad to speak beyond his social context and imperialist limitations to demonstrate that identity is socially constructed. In Watchmen, Moore breaks from comic convention to illustrate ways meaning may …

Preventing The Next Abu Gharib, Paul. Hofacker Jan 2010

Preventing The Next Abu Gharib, Paul. Hofacker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The cruelty of Military Police guards at Abu Ghraib prison contributed to American shame and questions regarding how such cruelty emerges. The accepted approach of "situational attribution theory" - based upon Zimbardo's (1973, 2007) social psychological perceptions and results of the Stanford Prison Experiment - proposed that personality or "disposition" has little role in the emergence of such cruelty. Termed "institutional cruelty," this manuscript presents the possibility that understandings and preventive measures afforded by situational attribution theory can be extended via acknowledgement of a greater role played by disposition. Psychoanalytic and object relations approaches are presented to this end. The …

Rastafari Presence In Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, And Song Of Solomon, Nicole Racquel Carr Jan 2010

Rastafari Presence In Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, And Song Of Solomon, Nicole Racquel Carr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Literary scholars frequently analyze the allusions to Western Christianity apparent in Toni Morrison's novels, but these studies overlook the ways in which some of her novels are informed by a Caribbean presence. This study argues that Rastafari themes, symbols, and ideologies are recurrent in Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, and Song of Solomon. Rastafari is a social movement primarily concerned with restoring the image of Africa to a holy place. A Rastafari analysis of these texts broadens the literary spectrum to suggest that these novels highlight Morrison's attempt to write about the multifaceted element of the black community, which remains …

Remembering The Future: Individual Differences In Metacognitive Representation Predict Prospective Memory Performance On Time-Baseed [Sic] And Event-Based Tasks In Early Childhood, Kayla B. Causey Jan 2010

Remembering The Future: Individual Differences In Metacognitive Representation Predict Prospective Memory Performance On Time-Baseed [Sic] And Event-Based Tasks In Early Childhood, Kayla B. Causey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Prospective memory is remembering to perform an action in the future, such as attending a meeting (a time-based task) or picking up milk at the gas station (an eventbased task), and is crucial to achieving goal-directed activities in everyday life. Children who fail to develop prospective memory abilities are likely to experience difficulties interacting with parents, teachers, and peers. To date, research on prospective memory development has been primarily descriptive or focused on underlying executive functioning. This dissertation investigated the developmental relationship between metacognitive representation and prospective memory in preschool and elementary school children and adults. Findings from Study 1 …

Risk Of Sperm Competition Moderatres Men's Relationship Satisfaction And Interest In Their Partner's Copulatory Orgasm, Vincent M. Bates Jan 2010

Risk Of Sperm Competition Moderatres Men's Relationship Satisfaction And Interest In Their Partner's Copulatory Orgasm, Vincent M. Bates

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Sperm competition occurs when the sperm of multiple males concurrently occupy a female's reproductive tract and compete for fertilization. Sperm competition may have been a recurrent adaptive problem over human evolutionary history. Women's orgasm may facilitate retention of a particular man's sperm. I therefore hypothesized that men experiencing greater sperm competition risk will be particularly interested in the occurrence of their partner's copulatory orgasm. Men who are more satisfied with and invested in their relationship may experience greater costs in the event of sperm competition and potential cuckoldry. Therefore, these men may be more interested in ensuring their partner's copulatory …

She Just Snapped, Megan. Tomei Jan 2010

She Just Snapped, Megan. Tomei

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Snapped, a documentary style show profiling female killers, is one of Oxygens longest running hit franchises. This thesis analyzes, through both the frames of feminist theory and rhetoric, the way the show perpetuates and plays upon the myth of feminine evil as well as the stereotype of women as weak, hysterical agents in need of control. Snapped showcases women who start out as seemingly normal but then enact horrendous crimes. The use of women that the audience can identify with but then later fear creates a cathartic experience in which female audience members can be vicariously cleansed of any dangerous …

State Compliance With The Mine Ban Treaty, Jacqueline C. Perez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Landmines have inflicted an insurmountable amount of physical and psychological harm, inhibiting social and economic development far after the conflict has ended. In an effort to create a world free of the weapon, a campaign to ban landmines was launched by non-governmental organizations. The Mine Ban Convention entered into force in 1999, requiring nation-states to immediately ban the use, production and transfer of anti-personnel landmines (APLs), destroy stockpiles within four years and remove landmines already planted within ten years. This study examines the level of legal compliance with the Mine Ban Convention. An empirical analysis is conducted using a data …

There were 317 students in the study. The research found that …

The Moral Authority Of The Child In Two Fairy Tales, Alyssa. Cedeno Jan 2010

The Moral Authority Of The Child In Two Fairy Tales, Alyssa. Cedeno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Although many studies focus specifically on the child's reception of fairy tales, few have considered whether the (step)child in the tales is more aware or more equipped with a knowledge of "moral authority" and "correct" conduct than the (step)parent. This thesis will consider the (step)parent/ (step)child relationship motif in two French and German fairy tales by Perrault and the Brothers Grimm: Perrault's Cendrillon ou la petite pantoufle de verre and Le Petit Chaperon rouge; and the Grimms' Aschenputtel and Rotkèappchen. In analyzing the genre's depiction of children, the thesis will examine the ways in which the narrative voice constructs the …
