Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn Dec 2010

Money Matters: The Influence Of Financial Factors On Graduate Student Persistence, Terrell L. Strayhorn

Journal of Student Financial Aid

National statistics indicate that approximately 50 percent of all graduate students fail to complete their degree; thus, understanding the factors that influence their persistence is an important research objective. Using data from a nationally representative sample of bachelor's degree recipients, the study aimed to answer three questions: What proportion of 1992-1993 bachelor's degree recipients enrolled in graduate school by 2003? Of those, what proportion persisted in graduate school? Controlling for background and academic differences, what effect do financial factors have on persistence in graduate school? Descriptive and hierarchal binomial logistic regression results suest that 36 percent of bachelor's degree recipients …

Shear Stress Analysis Of Levees Subjected To Combined Surge And Wave Overtopping, Justin Michael Shaw Dec 2010

Shear Stress Analysis Of Levees Subjected To Combined Surge And Wave Overtopping, Justin Michael Shaw

Theses and Dissertations

Storm surge above the levee crest elevation combined with levee wave overtopping can place large shear stresses on the levee landward slope face. Previous research has examined overtopping flow conditions, but the resulting shear stress has not been thoroughly analyzed. The purpose of this thesis is to examine multiple combinations of overtopping flow conditions and the resultant shear stress along the levee’s landward slope. This thesis presents measurements of depth, velocity, discharge, and wave height, and it estimates shear stress using data collected from a scaled physical model. Shear stress is estimated using three equations including a version of Saint-Venant …

Optimization Techniques For College Financial Aid Managers, Donald I. Bosshardt, Larry Lichtenstein, George Palumbo, Mark P. Zaporowski

Journal of Student Financial Aid

In the context of a theoretical model of expected profit maximization, this paper shows how historic institutional data can be used to assist enrollment managers in determining the level of financial aid for students with varying demographic and quality characteristics. Optimal tuition pricing in conjunction with empirical estimation of matriculation probability functions illustrates how financial aid can be used to maximize net tuition revenue given institutionally determined objectives. The model provides insight to the level of price sensitivity of prospective matriculants at a medium-sized comprehensive private college.

Brave New World: Redesigning Lehman College Library’S Website, Stefanie Havelka, David Stevens Dec 2010

Brave New World: Redesigning Lehman College Library’S Website, Stefanie Havelka, David Stevens

Publications and Research

Since today’s students are digital natives, they naturally expect more from an academic library website. Well-designed websites, virtual games, social networking as well as search engines are an integral part of their daily digital lives. Consequently, challenges faced during redesign of a library’s website are two-fold:

  • Concepts of web usability must be applied. The website needs to be well organized and present its information and content in a user-friendly manner.
  • The website needs to be visually appealing since it serves both as the virtual extension of the physical library, as well as a significant outreach tool promoting the Library’s and …

Clarifying The Effects Of Neighborhood Context On Violence “Behind Closed Doors”, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson Dec 2010

Clarifying The Effects Of Neighborhood Context On Violence “Behind Closed Doors”, Emily M. Wright, Michael L. Benson

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Research on neighborhood-level effects on intimate partner violence (IPV) has expanded significantly in the past two decades. However, to date, studies have been unable to disentangle compositional and contextual effects on IPV and have rarely considered the social mechanisms that might link neighborhood conditions to IPV. Using data from the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods, this study considers individual and contextual influences on violence between partners, and examines the effects of disadvantage and collective efficacy on this type of behavior. Results indicate that neighborhood disadvantage significantly increases and collective efficacy significantly decreases IPV after controlling for individual-level correlates. …

Mono-Dispersed Droplet Delivery In A Refrigerated Wind Tunnel, Kyle Hutchings Dec 2010

Mono-Dispersed Droplet Delivery In A Refrigerated Wind Tunnel, Kyle Hutchings

Theses and Dissertations

An aircraft may experience inlight ice accretion and corresponding reductions in performance and control when the vehicle encounters clouds of super-cooled water droplets. In order to study anti-icing coatings, the EADS-IW Surface Engineering Group is building a refrigerated wind tunnel. Several variations of droplet delivery systems were explored to determine the most effective way to introduce mono-dispersed droplets into the wind tunnel. To investigate this flow, timeurate, unsteady viscous flow simulations were performed using the Loci/CHEM flow solver with a multi-scale hybrid RANS/LES turbulence model. A Lagrangian droplet model was employed to simulate the movement of water droplets in the …

Software Maintainability Measurement: A Task Complexity Perspective, Lulu He Dec 2010

Software Maintainability Measurement: A Task Complexity Perspective, Lulu He

Theses and Dissertations

Software maintainability is one of the most crucial quality attributes of a software product. Software engineering researchers and practitioners have devoted considerable effort to developing “good design” methods, rules and principles to improve software maintainability. But before we can validate the effectiveness of these methods, we first need an approach to measure software maintainability. The existing maintainability measures usually have limited scope and accuracy since they either isolate the software from its environment and focus only on the technical properties of the software, or measure a confounding effect of various factors involved in the maintenance process. Furthermore, these measures are …

Static And Transient Voltage Stability Assessment Of Hybrid Ac/Dc Power Systems, Minglan Lin Dec 2010

Static And Transient Voltage Stability Assessment Of Hybrid Ac/Dc Power Systems, Minglan Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Voltage stability is a challenging problem in the design and operation of terrestrial and shipboard power systems. DC links can be integrated in the AC systems to increase the transmission capacity or to enhance the distribution performance. However, DC links introduce voltage stability issues related to the reactive power shortage due to power converters. Multi-infeed DC systems make this existing phenomenon more complicated. In addition, shipboard power systems have unique characteristics, and some concepts and methodologies developed for terrestrial power systems need to be investigated and modified before they are extended for shipboard power systems. One goal of this work …

Rapid Repair Of Levee Breaches: Plug Dimension Parameterization, Elizabeth Cathleen Burg Dec 2010

Rapid Repair Of Levee Breaches: Plug Dimension Parameterization, Elizabeth Cathleen Burg

Theses and Dissertations

Thousands of miles of levees exist in the United States and around the world and failure of these levees as a result of breaching has the potential to cause severe flooding damage. A technology, the PLUG, has been developed to temporarily reduce the flow through a levee breach as an alternative to traditional methods. This study is focused on developing initial guidance on the parameters for sizing a PLUG using a 1:100 (model:prototype) Froude scaled model. It was found that for the PLUG to effectively reduce flow through the breach, the required ratio of the PLUG length to the breach …

The Hanle Effect As A Diagnostic Of Magnetic Fields In Stellar Envelopes. V. Thin Lines From Keplerian Disks., Richard Ignace Dec 2010

The Hanle Effect As A Diagnostic Of Magnetic Fields In Stellar Envelopes. V. Thin Lines From Keplerian Disks., Richard Ignace

ETSU Faculty Works

This paper focuses on the polarized profiles of resonance scattering lines that form in magnetized disks. Optically thin lines from Keplerian planar disks are considered. Model line profiles are calculated for simple field topologies of axial fields (i.e., vertical to the disk plane) and toroidal fields (i.e., purely azimuthal). A scheme for discerning field strengths and geometries in disks is developed based on Stokes Q − U diagrams for the run of polarization across line profiles that are Doppler-broadened by the disk rotation. A discussion of the Hanle effect for magnetized disks in which the magnetorotational instability (MRI) is operating …

Modeling Heat Transfer During Cooling Of Ready-To-Eat Meat And Poultry Products Using Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis And Web-Based Simulation, Jihan F. Cepeda Jimenez

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The meat industry is required to comply with processing performance standards for preventing the growth of foodborne pathogens in products. These performance standards, established by the United States Department of Agriculture - Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) require a reduction of Salmonella spp (lethality standard) and limit the growth of sporeforming bacteria (stabilization standard) in certain processed meat products. In general, strategies used to comply with these standards are associated with thermal processing. Meat processors have difficulties complying with these performance standards. Moreover, thermal processing deviations are an issue in the meat industry that generate uncertainty regarding the safety …

Spherical Nearest Neighbor Classification: Application To Hyperspectral Data, Dalton Lunga, Okan Ersoy Dec 2010

Spherical Nearest Neighbor Classification: Application To Hyperspectral Data, Dalton Lunga, Okan Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

The problem of feature transformation arises in many fields of information processing, including machine learning, data compression, computer vision and geosciences applications. Here we discuss an approach that seeks a hyperspherical coordinate system preserving geodesic distances in the high dimensional hyperspectral data space. A lower dimensional hyperspherical manifold is computed using a lower rank matrix approximation algorithm combined with the recently proposed spherical embeddings method. Three spherical metrics for classification that exploits the nonlinear structure of hyperspectral imagery based on the properties of hyperspherical surfaces and their relationship with local tangent spaces are proposed. As part of experimental validation, results …
