"Most, if not all, Lesbians, Gays, and Bisexuals struggle at one point of their lives to reconcile their sexual and religious identities. This struggle can be either helped or hindered within the interpersonal communicative acts that lesbians, gays, and bisexuals encounter on a daily basis throughout their lives. This study uses narrative interviews to examine the impact and affect that various interpersonal communicative acts have had on five people, some of whom identified as lesbian, gay, and bisexual. The Umiat field, located in northwestern Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Arctic Ocean, potentially contains the largest accumulation of oil in Naval Petroleum Reserve No.4. Most of the oil is found within the permafrost zone. The main oil-producing zones in the Umiat field are marine sandstones in the Grandstand Formation of the Cretaceous Nanushuk group. Although the temperatures are close to freezing, the oil in the Umiat field remains unfrozen due to its very high API gravity. However, this results in a very unique pore space containing frozen water and oil, posing a particular challenge to characterization and …

"The objective of this research was to explore a cost-effective and non-invasive methodology to characterize spatial variability of hydraulic conductivity using airborne electromagnetic (AEM) signatures as an alternative to traditional techniques such as borehole sampling. The relationship of AEM measured apparent resistivity and magnetic field strength was explored using a small dataset that included 180 natural moisture (NM) content data and a total dataset of 546 grain size distributions that excluded the NM. The grain size distributions were used to develop soil indicator parameter and to estimate the hydraulic conductivity (K*) using pedo-transfer functions. "During recent years the viability of extracting river energy using hydrokinetic devices became a topic that brought in national attention due to higher fuel costs, and an increased demand of electric energy. A tool for hydrokinetic energy potential assessment in rivers, HYDROKAL, which stands for Hydrokinetic Calculator, was developed. This tool was generated in Fortran 90 programming language as an external module for the CCHE2D, an existing two-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model developed by researchers at the National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering, University of Mississippi. Bootstrap analyses of hatch data collected during two independent experiments revealed that hybridization between pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) breeding populations separated at either a large geographic scale or a fine temporal scale can influence development time. Restricted maximum likelihood estimators also revealed that sire, dam, cross, and parental interaction can influence genetic variance associated with development time at either scale. Few studies have investigated the extent of local adaptation that results from fine-scale ecological variation, the genetic underpinnings of that adaptation, or the potential impacts outbreeding at that level may have on fitness. Connecting Religion And Work: Patterns And Influences Of Work-Faith Integration, Monty Lynn, Michael J. Naughton, Steve Vanderveen

Religiosity can significantly impact human behavior yet little is known about how religious belief and practice integrate with work. Using the Faith at Work Scale, we surveyed Christian workers in the United States (n = 374) and found that work-faith integration was positively associated with faith maturity, church attendance, age and denominational strictness, and negatively associated with organizational size. Denominational groups varied in their degree of integration but displayed similar patterns across dimensions of integration.Work-faith integration was manifest most strongly in integration related to the self, and somewhat less so in areas related to others and in transcendent aspects of …

The basic thesis of this paper is that there is an undeniable tension between maximization of individual welfare and a sustainable and healthy environment in a finite world. Following from this, the further claim is that our current capitalist system of private production and ownership is fundamentally in tension with the environment and should be changed. Without a change in attitude toward our conceptualization of these problems, that is, without contextualizing these problems outside of the market-based solutions and free market solutions, crisis is inevitable. Homo economicus needs to be replaced by homo environmentus.

The FREEDM microgrid is a smart grid solution with Distributed Grid Intelligence (DGI) to efficiently manage the power distribution and storage of renewable energy. within the FREEDM system, DGI applies distributed control method in a unique way to achieve feasible load balancing in microgrid by migrating power between renewable energy generation and storage at each node. This paper presents the key aspects in implementing such a scheme and outlines the preliminary results obtained by integrating the proposed methodology. the results demonstrate the potential benefits of adopting DGI control on a microgrid.

This study investigated how 2 different rating conditions, the controlled rating condition (CRC) and the uncontrolled rating condition (URC), effected rater behavior and the reliability of a performance assessment (PA) known as the Missionary Teaching Assessment (MTA). The CRC gives raters the capability to manipulate (pause, rewind, fast-forward) video recordings of an examinee's performance as they rate while the URC does not give them this capability (i.e., the rater must watch the recording straight through without making any manipulations). Computational methods of analyzing, simulating, and modeling proteins are essential towards understanding protein structure and its interactions. Computational methods are easier as not all protein structures can be determined experimentally due to the inherent difficultly of working with some proteins. In order to predict, design, analyze, simulate or model a protein, data from experimentally determined proteins such as those located in the repository of the Protein Data Bank (PDB) are essential. The goal of this thesis is to develop a new, fast, adaptive load flow algorithm that "automatically alternates" numerical methods including Newton-Raphson method, Gauss-Seidel method and Gauss method for a load flow run to achieve less run time. Unlike the proposed method, the traditional load flow analysis uses only one numerical method at a time. This adaptive algorithm performs all the computation for finding the bus voltage angles and magnitudes, real and reactive powers for the given generation and load values, while keeping track of the proximity to convergence of a solution. This thesis examines illegal gambling in New Orleans and surrounding parishes in the 1920s. It will focus on a series of raids mounted by the Louisiana National Guard to end illegal gambling in both St. Bernard and Jefferson Parishes in August and November of 1928 and again in February of 1929. Corrupt leadership and public toleration allowed gambling houses in both St. Bernard and Jefferson parishes to operate openly for nearly an entire decade. Pressure from economic, religious and civic organizations within the city of New Orleans forced newly elected Governor Huey P. Long to take swift action in the …

Teacher stories were once relegated to informal gatherings but more recently this aspect of teacher development is being carefully studied in more formalized settings because it is believed to be an important part of teacher development. New ways are being sought to use various aspects of storytelling to help pre-service teachers develop important teaching skills through reflection on experience, dialogue journals, case studies and autobiography. Despite these efforts at the university level, it is especially difficult for pre-service teachers to integrate and apply theories from their methods courses to actual classroom practice. Albert Baldwin Wood and his screw pumps modernized New Orleans by bringing flood-free streets and cleaner water to the city while providing the potential for growth by pumping swamp lands dry. While Wood was never part of the local Progressive movement, his work with the pumps fit with Progressive initiatives for modernization. At first, the screw pumps removed rain water from the streets. Then New Orleans expanded the drainage to include sewerage removal and water purification. The pumps successfully drained thousands of acres of land once considered uninhabitable swamp land. This additional land extended New Orleans city limits but also …

The Germans of Geilenkirchen-Hengesburg region of Germany were convinced by relative and friend, Father Peter Leonard Thevis, of the Archdiocese of New Orleans, to emigrate to the United States for a number of reasons: political, religious, and economic. After establishing themselves on land previously used for grazing cattle, the Germans soon discovered rice could easily be cultivated in large amounts. Along with their success as rice farmers in Roberts Cove, Louisiana, these Germans soon involved themselves in politics and engaged one another and the surrounding community in numerous court cases. These court cases, overlooked by previous historians, demonstrate that the …

This paper explores the history of a group of immigrants that came to the United States from the small rural Austrian region of the Burgenland between World War One and World War Two. By examining several biographical life stories of contemporaries it wants explain why the emigrants decided to leave their country, how they managed their passage, how they assimilated to their adoptedâ€home, and how they integrated themselves into the new society.

Rhes (Ras homolog enriched in striatum) has been identified as a novel monomeric G-protein involved in dopaminergic and other signaling in the striatum. Given the many effects of opioids that involve striatal circuitry, genetically engineered mice that are incapable of making Rhes (rhes-/-) and their control littermates (rhes+/+) were subjected to behavioral tests to determine if any differences existed in opioid analgesia, tolerance, withdrawal, reward, and locomotion. Rhes-/- mice showed an increased opioid mediated analgesia, along with an absence of tolerance and decrease in withdrawal when compared with rhes+/+ littermates. However, no significant changes were seen in opioid induced locomotor …
