Corn Hybrids: Deer Taste The Difference, Joshua A. Delger, Kevin L. Monteith, Jonathan A. Jenks Dec 2010

Corn Hybrids: Deer Taste The Difference, Joshua A. Delger, Kevin L. Monteith, Jonathan A. Jenks

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

As daylight begins to illuminate the countryside, a cold wind rustles through the leaves of the weedy rows of corn that you barely had time to get in the ground this past spring. The corn plants are stunted, the few small ears of corn that did grow are not even enticing to passing blackbirds, and that stud buck captured on your trail-camera months earlier is nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, a couple hundred yards across the fence to the south, you hear the unmistakable sound of deer running through corn. Your heart rate involuntarily increases. As the sun continues to …

Tracking Floral Visitation Using Dna Barcodes, Ivan Ray Shoemaker Dec 2010

Tracking Floral Visitation Using Dna Barcodes, Ivan Ray Shoemaker

Theses and Dissertations

Floral visitation resulting in interspecific pollen transfer (IPT) from non-native or invasive plant species can affect the reproductive fitness of native plant species through pollen allelopathy, stigma clogging, stylar clogging, and ovule (seed) discounting. The prevalence of IPT and the importance of pollinators in mediating its impacts, however, remain poorly understood. Although most traditional methods for examining visitor movement are insufficient for determining rates of potential IPT, one promising alternative is the use of DNA barcoding. Because floral visitors eat, collect or unknowingly obtain pollen, nectar and other floral tissues, plant DNA should be recoverable from their bodies, permitting molecular …

Prediction Of Copper Grade At Flotation Column Concentrate Using Artificial Neural Network, F. Nakhaei, A. Sam, M. R. Mosavi, S. Zeidabadi Dec 2010

Prediction Of Copper Grade At Flotation Column Concentrate Using Artificial Neural Network, F. Nakhaei, A. Sam, M. R. Mosavi, S. Zeidabadi

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The flotation column is a multivariable process whose main control objective is to guarantee the metallurgical yield set for the process operation, expressed by the grade and the recovery of the valuable mineral in the concentrate. The on-line estimation of grade usually requires a significant amount of work in maintenance and calibration of on-stream analyzers, in order to maintain good accuracy and high availability. These difficulties and the high cost of investment and maintenance of these devices have encouraged the approach of prediction of metal grade as an index of control performance. Therefore, advanced new methods such as Artificial Neural …

An Equivalent Three-Dipole Model For Ic Radiated Emissions Based On Tem Cell Measurements, Siming Pan, Jingook Kim, Sungnam Kim, Jaesu Park, Heoncheol Oh, Jun Fan Dec 2010

An Equivalent Three-Dipole Model For Ic Radiated Emissions Based On Tem Cell Measurements, Siming Pan, Jingook Kim, Sungnam Kim, Jaesu Park, Heoncheol Oh, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An equivalent dipole model is proposed in this paper to represent the source of radiated electromagnetic emissions from an integrated circuit (IC). the height of an IC is usually much smaller than its length and width, so only three dipole moments are sufficient to characterize an IC in terms of its electromagnetic emissions. the dipole moments can be extracted from three TEM cell measurements. the radiated fields from the IC can then be calculated based on the extracted dipole sources. This IC emission model with three dipole moments is validated using the far-field measurements in a semi anechoic chamber for …

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Laboratory studies reveal the sensitivity of measured geophysical properties to solid-fluid, fluid-fluid, and solid-solid interfaces in granular and fractured materials. In granular materials, electrical properties and nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation times exhibit a strong dependence on the size and properties of the solid-fluid interface. The electrical and seismic properties of granular materials and the seismic properties of fractured materials reveal a dependence on the size or geometry of fluid-fluid interfaces. Seismic properties of granular and fractured materials are affected by the effective stress and cementing material at solid-solid interfaces. There have been some recent studies demonstrating the use of field-scale …

Teaching Intercultural Communication In A Professional Language Course, Michael Hager Dec 2010

Teaching Intercultural Communication In A Professional Language Course, Michael Hager

Global Business Languages

In the following article, we will discuss culture instruction and the necessity to include information about the native culture. Culture instruction can also include stereotypes in order to permit students to confront their own use of stereotypes. Then we discuss background information about culture, including self-construal, the distinction between independent and interdependent cultures, and paradigm shifting. This background information provides the basis for demonstrating how culture can be taught in a business German course by using, for example, marketing and culture assimilators.

Lymphocytic Hypophysitis, Saurabh Singhal, Harminder Singh Md, Kevin Furlong, Lawrence C. Kenyon, James J. Evans Dec 2010

Lymphocytic Hypophysitis, Saurabh Singhal, Harminder Singh Md, Kevin Furlong, Lawrence C. Kenyon, James J. Evans

JHN Journal

A 59 year-old female presented with visual problems in 2006, and was initially diagnosed with a pituitary macroadenoma on MRI (Figure 1). Preoperatively, the pituitary lesion decreased in size after the patient was started on steroids, raising the possibility of lymphoma and inflammatory conditions. Ultimately, endoscopic trans-nasal biopsy of the pituitary lesion revealed lymphocytic hypophysitis. She was treated with steroids for two years and developed several side effects from chronic steroid use, including Cushingoid features, diabetes, cataracts, weight-gain and osteopenia. As a result, she was subsequently treated with methotrexate and gradual weaning of the steroids.

Fever And Infection In The Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, Craig Laws, Jack Jallo Dec 2010

Fever And Infection In The Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit, Craig Laws, Jack Jallo

JHN Journal

Fever is an adaptive response to a variety of infectious, inflammatory, and foreign stimuli. The “febrile response” confers an immunological advantage to the host over invading microorganisms – bacterial, fungal and viral. Fever results from a cytokine-mediated reaction that results in the generation of acute phase reactants and controlled elevation of core body temperature. The anterior hypothalamus coordinates the “febrile response” in reaction to the release of endogenous pyrogenes and subsequent up-regulation of prostaglandin synthesis. An ensuing change in the hypothalamic set point for temperature regulation advances a synchronized physiologic response from CNS to periphery, on a microscopic and macroscopic …

Investigating Heavy Metal Accumulation And Oxidative Stress Tolerance Of Non-Accumulators And Hyperaccumulators In The Brassicaceae Plant Family, Fritzie Joy Into

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Physiological and enzymatic analysis indicated that the non-accumulator A. thaliana showed an oxidative stress response in all assays except for protein carbonylation. Other non-accumulator plant species showed a significant difference in oxidative stress response in the TBARS assay; however, for some assays no stress response was evident. The hyperaccumulator plant species showed no significant difference in oxidative stress as indicated by the all of the assays with the exception of T. montanum var. montanum which showed an oxidative stress response in the SOD assay. Basal catalase enzyme activity was notably higher in the hyperaccumulators T. montanum var. montanum and T. …
