Diet Reconstruction Of Wild Rio-Grande Turkey Of Central Utah Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Benjamin D. Stearns
Diet Reconstruction Of Wild Rio-Grande Turkey Of Central Utah Using Stable Isotope Analysis, Benjamin D. Stearns
Theses and Dissertations
The wild turkey is endemic to North America and has played a role in human cultures past and present. However, with the turkey's elusive behavior some aspects of its ecology are challenging to understand. Diet is one of these difficult aspects to study. The purpose of this study was to determine the diet selection of wild turkeys in central Utah using non invasive stable isotope technology. We hypothesize that turkey diet is highly specific, that consumption of specific plant species correlates with the needs of the individual turkey, and that stable isotope analysis will reveal patterns in annual dietary intake. …

Reconstructability Analysis Of Elementary Cellular Automata, Martin Zwick, Hui Shi
Reconstructability Analysis Of Elementary Cellular Automata, Martin Zwick, Hui Shi
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Reconstructability analysis is a method to determine whether a multivariate relation, defined set- or information-theoretically, is decomposable with or without loss (reduction in constraint) into lower ordinality relations. Set-theoretic reconstructability analysis (SRA) is used to characterize the mappings of elementary cellular automata. The degree of lossless decomposition possible for each mapping is more effective than the λ parameter (Walker & Ashby, Langton) as a predictor of chaotic dynamics.
Complete SRA yields not only the simplest lossless structure but also a vector of losses of all decomposed structures, indexed by parameter, τ. This vector subsumes λ, Wuensche’s Z parameter, and Walker …
Individual And Family Predictors Of The Caregiver Burden Of Parents Rearing A Child With Diabetes, Joan Margaret Leishman
Individual And Family Predictors Of The Caregiver Burden Of Parents Rearing A Child With Diabetes, Joan Margaret Leishman
Theses and Dissertations
Caregiver burden results from the stress that parents feel due to their responsibilities as a caregiver. This study was performed to analyze a proposed model of variables that predict caregiver burden of parents raising a child with type 1 diabetes, as well as determine differences in mothers' and fathers' models of caregiver burden. The predictor variables of caregiver burden were based on mothers and fathers perceptions of marital conflict, marital satisfaction, depression, child externalizing behaviors, number of children in the family, and family income. The results showed that for mothers, marital conflict, depression, and child externalizing behaviors had significant direct …
Taxonomy And Applied Biogeography Of Mongolian Stoneflies (Insecta: Plecoptera), Sarah Walker Judson
Taxonomy And Applied Biogeography Of Mongolian Stoneflies (Insecta: Plecoptera), Sarah Walker Judson
Theses and Dissertations
Since the early 1900s, efforts have been made to catalogue the stoneflies of Mongolia. Taxonomic work from 1960 to 1980 greatly expanded basic lists of stoneflies in Mongolia, but no comprehensive survey or synthesis of this dispersed literature has been completed. In conjunction with a modern survey of the aquatic insects of Mongolia, we collected Plecoptera on a series of expeditions to the Selenge (north) and Altai (west) regions of Mongolia. A total of 48 species distributed in 24 genera and 8 families were documented, including 3 of the 5 Mongolian endemics, 2 new species records for Mongolia, and 1 …

Synthesis And Biological Evaluation Of Bupropion Analogues As Potential Pharmacotherapies For Smoking Cessation, F. Ivy Carroll, Bruce E. Blough, S. Wayne Mascarella, Hernan A. Navarro, J. Brek Eaton, Ronald J. Lukas, M. Imad Damaj
Translational Neuroscience
Bupropion (2a) analogues were synthesized and tested for their ability to inhibit monoamine uptake and to antagonize the effects of human α3β4*, α4β2, α4β4, and α1 * nAChRs. The analogues were evaluated for their ability to block nicotine-induced effects in four tests in mice. Nine analogues showed increased monoamine uptake inhibition. Similar to 2a, all but one analogue show inhibition of nAChR function selective for human α3β4*-nAChR. Nine analogues have higher affinity at α3β4*-nAChRs than 2a. Four analogues also had higher affinity for α4β2 nAChR. Analogues 2r, 2m, and 2n with AD 50 values of 0.014,0.015, and 0.028 mg/kg were …

Accountable Care Organizations: Implications For Antitrust Policy, Taylor Burke, Sara J. Rosenbaum
Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications
This analysis examines accountable care organizations (ACOs) and assesses their implications for antitrust policy. Consideration of the antitrust implications of ACOs is timely. Both the House and Senate health reform measures contemplate the creation of ACOs as a new class of Medicare provider while providing parallel legal authority under Medicaid.

Countering Wmd In The 2010 Qdr, John P. Caves , Jr.
WMD Proceedings
Coming from the Center for the Study of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), I probably will not surprise you by talking about the WMD aspects of this year’s Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR). Specifically, I will focus on its countering WMD aspects—that is, how the Department of Defense (DOD) thinks about and prepares to prevent, defend against, and mitigate the consequences of adversary use of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear weapons. I will not discuss the review’s missile defense or nuclear deterrence aspects, but my fellow panelists may do so.

Efficient proliferation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) inside macrophage requires that the essential response regulator MtrA be optimally phosphorylated. However, the genomic targets of MtrA have not been identified. We show by chromatin immunoprecipitation and DNase I footprinting that the chromosomal origin of replication, oriC, and the promoter for the major secreted immunodominant antigen Ag85B, encoded by fbpB, are MtrA targets. DNase I footprinting analysis revealed that MtrA recognizes two direct repeats of GTCACAgcg-like sequences and that MtrA approximately P, the phosphorylated form of MtrA, binds preferentially to these targets. The oriC contains several MtrA motifs, and replacement of all motifs …
Who Directs The Play And Why? An Exploratory Study Of Directive Versus Nondirective Play Therapy, Carolyn Andrews
Who Directs The Play And Why? An Exploratory Study Of Directive Versus Nondirective Play Therapy, Carolyn Andrews
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how play therapists determine when to use a directive versus nondirective treatment approach with children. Eleven therapists who engage in play therapy with children participated in individual interviews designed to collect their perspectives about their preferred play therapy treatment approach. Participants were selected through a non-random convenience snowball sampling technique from across New England. The findings of this study reflect for this sample, there does not appear to be a uniform method of determining when a directive versus nondirective play therapy treatment approach is utilized. Participants tend to determine treatment method …

Clinicians' Use Of Mindfulness As An Adjunct To Trauma Treatment : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Lisa Beth Rogers
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This project was undertaken to explore how clinicians use mindfulness as an adjunct to trauma treatment. Data collection for this exploratory study consisted of hour long, face-to-face interviews or telephone interviews with a qualitative, flexible method of data inquiry. Eleven experienced clinicians from a variety of mental health disciplines whose practice of psychotherapy was informed by mindfulness training participated in the study which was designed to collect their perspectives about mindfulness practice. This study examined therapist perceptions of the effectiveness and contraindications of mindfulness, and their application of mindfulness in sessions through the use of case samples. Major findings of …

The Level Of The Beasts That Perish: Animalized Text In Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna's Helen Fleetwood, Christie Anne Peterson
The Level Of The Beasts That Perish: Animalized Text In Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna's Helen Fleetwood, Christie Anne Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Although Charlotte Elizabeth Tonna's 1839 social reform novel Helen Fleetwood has long been understood as a commentary on the dehumanizing effects of factory work, her use of animals to represent factory workers has not been considered in analyses of her depictions of dehumanization. Considering both the growing interest in the animal/human divide during the early nineteenth century and Tonna's own direct contributions to discussions about animals, in this essay I examine the role that animals play in negotiating definitions of humanity and nature in the novel. I argue that idealized, "Edenic" animals and corrupted, "industrial" animals are integral to Tonna's …

In My Busby Berkeley Dreams, Michael Pierce
Theses and Dissertations
I use high- and low-tech approaches in my drawings and bookart to address issues of sexual identity and beauty. My work emphasizes process, content, and image. I create pictures using tightly cropped symbolic figurative imagery. I also leave smudges, smears, and traces of what happened in the making of the work to make process more visible. In my work I would like you to consider what you see and what you don’t see, to smile in recognition of something you might never have really thought about before. And when I really get it right, you might even question your own …
Pension Incentives And Premature Retirement, Fan Fei
Pension Incentives And Premature Retirement, Fan Fei
Undergraduate Economic Review
This is a study of people’s retirement timing under defined benefit pension plans (DB plans). The actuarial structure of DB pensions generally creates strong incentive for people to stay with their employers, at least to their early retirement ages, not to retire beforehand. Upon tracking respondents covered by DB plans in the Wave I (1992 cohort) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) until they left their 1992 employers, we found that a significant percentage of people (about 17%) left their jobs prior to their early retirement ages. Why did people leave prematurely? Several possible hypotheses were considered and examined. …
