An Ontological Analysis Of Mainstream Addiction Theories: Exploring Relational Alternatives, Wiley Benjamin Hill Iii
An Ontological Analysis Of Mainstream Addiction Theories: Exploring Relational Alternatives, Wiley Benjamin Hill Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Individuals and societies have long struggled to understand and confront, by constructive means, the nemesis of addiction. No other human ill has provoked more concern, accounted for more suffering, or elicited greater consequence than addiction in all its diverse forms. Although alcoholism and drug abuse symbolize the traditional essence of addiction; compulsive sexuality, pathological gambling, eating disorders, tobacco use, etc., are also believed to have addictive properties according to contemporary concepts. Numerous commendable theories and therapies have been offered down through history to explain and mediate addictions conceptually enigmatic and therapeutically resistant nature. As this paper will clarify, many of …
Showcasing Student, Faculty, And Campus Publications In A Small Liberal Arts College Institutional Repository, Janet Sietmann
Showcasing Student, Faculty, And Campus Publications In A Small Liberal Arts College Institutional Repository, Janet Sietmann
Library Technology Conference
Institutional Repositories (IRs) offer a place to showcase student, faculty and staff scholarship. In addition, they provide an opportunity to have campus-wide discussions about many topics related to scholarly publishing.
In this presentation I will share Macalester’s experience in planning the IR, beginning with the need to provide open access for student honors projects, and I will highlight the expansion of our collections to include student award winning papers, PowerPoint presentations, and transcripts of college oral histories. I will tell how our efforts to populate our IR led to new opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty. And I will share …

How To Decide, Archon Or Archivists’ Toolkit: Open Source Software Solutions To Manage And Provide Access To Archival Information, Tom Steman, Ian C. Stade, Alexis Braun Marks
Library Technology Conference
Often times librarians find themselves working with archival materials, and archivists find themselves working with library materials. Armed with enough knowledge to preserve and inventory the catalog, it is easy, whether you are an archivist in a library or a librarian in an archives, to be paralyzed when it comes to more technical tasks like SQL databases, EAD, MARC XML, or CSS Stylesheets. As we try to find ways to do tasks that push us outside of our comfort zones or even those that we are comfortable with, there are open source collection management software that can help: Archon and …

Compression Testing Of Composite Laminated Foam Under Thermal Loading And With Central Holes, Dominic Surano, Jonathan Russo, Daniel Leighton
Aerospace Engineering
A study was conducted to investigate the effect of heat on composite sandwich plates, fabricated with the vacuum resin infusion process, with center holes of varying diameters. The study involved conventional notched specimens and notched specimens with shear keys, both of which were subjected to monotonic inplane compression loading. Hole diameter was be varied from one to four inches in one inch increments. Loading rate was applied using the Instron machine at one millimeter per minute. The diameter of the shear key around the holes varied from one inch to four inches in one inch increments. The specimens were placed …
Activation Of Non-Muscle Myosin Iib Helps Mediate Tnf-Alpha Cell Death Signaling, Patrick G. Flynn
Activation Of Non-Muscle Myosin Iib Helps Mediate Tnf-Alpha Cell Death Signaling, Patrick G. Flynn
Open Access Dissertations
TNF-alpha can stimulate a variety of kinases with the ability to activate non-muscle myosin II. As a result, increases in actin filament formation and actomyosin contractility (AMC) have been reported in response to TNF-alpha. These events are thought to play an important role in mediating TNF-alpha induced apoptosis but how they do so is unclear. In this study we prevented non-muscle myosin II activation in response to TNF-alpha by treating cells with the myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) inhibitor ML-7 or through isoform specific siRNA knockdown of myosin IIA and IIB. We found that treatment with ML-7 or knockdown of …

Risk Assessment Of Catch And Release, Rolf Erik Olsen, Tor Fredrik Næsje, Trygve Poppe, Lynne Sneddon, John Webb
Aquaculture and Fisheries Collection
The report was produced during most of 2009, and gives a state of art overview of current knowledge on the effects of catch and release practices on these fish species’ welfare, using accessible and peer reviewed published literature as basis for the assessment. Anecdotic and non-published reports have been used to a limited extent as they are regarded as untested or containing unverified statements. The Panel on Animal Health and Welfare discussed the full report in a meeting on the 9th of December, and gave its support to the conclusions drawn by the ad hoc-group.
The report has concentrated on …

Processing A Nickel Nanostrand And Nickel Coated Carbon Fiber Filled Conductive Polyethylene By Injection Molding, David Anthony Whitworth
Processing A Nickel Nanostrand And Nickel Coated Carbon Fiber Filled Conductive Polyethylene By Injection Molding, David Anthony Whitworth
Theses and Dissertations
A new method for pre-impregnating nickel coated carbon fiber with a thermoplastic polymer to make towpreg, similar to a recently developed coating-line by João P. Nunes et al and a new electrically conductive thermoplastic are developed. A melted bath was used to help mitigate health concerns and waste for dispersion of nickel coated carbon fibers (NCF) in low density polyethylene (LDPE). This towpreg was then mixed with more LDPE or a mixture of LDPE and nickel nanostrands (NiNS) to a desired filler volume fraction to test the electrical conductivity of the composite. Some of these mixtures were then injection molded …
Development And Use Of Microsatellite Markers For Genetic Diversity Analysis Of Canahua (Chenopodium Pallidicaule Aellen), Amalia Vargas
Development And Use Of Microsatellite Markers For Genetic Diversity Analysis Of Canahua (Chenopodium Pallidicaule Aellen), Amalia Vargas
Theses and Dissertations
Cañahua (Chenopodium pallidicaule Aellen) is a poorly studied, annual subsistence crop of the high Andes of South America. Its nutritionally value (high in protein and mineral content) and ability to thrive in harsh climates (drought, extreme elevations, etc.) make it an important regional food crop throughout the Andean region. The objectives of this study were to develop genetic markers and to quantify genetic diversity within cañahua. A set of 43 wild and cultivated cañahua genotypes and two related species (C. quinoa and C. petiolare) were evaluated for polymorphism using 192 microsatellite markers derived from random genomic …

Accurate Genome-Scale Percentage Dna Methylation Estimates From Microarray Data, Martin J. Aryee, Zhijin Wu, Christine Ladd-Acosta, Brian Herb, Andrew P. Feinberg, Srinivasan Yegnasurbramanian, Rafael A. Irizarry
Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers
DNA methylation is a key regulator of gene function in a multitude of both normal and abnormal biological processes, but tools to elucidate its roles on a genome-wide scale are still in their infancy. Methylation sensitive restriction enzymes and microarrays provide a potential high-throughput, low-cost platform to allow methylation profiling. However, accurate absolute methylation estimates have been elusive due to systematic errors and unwanted variability. Previous microarray pre-processing procedures, mostly developed for expression arrays, fail to adequately normalize methylation-related data since they rely on key assumptions that are violated in the case of DNA methylation. We develop a normalization strategy …
The Use Of Olap Reporting Technology To Improve Patient Care Services Decision Making Within The University Health Center, Carlos M. Gonzalez
The Use Of Olap Reporting Technology To Improve Patient Care Services Decision Making Within The University Health Center, Carlos M. Gonzalez
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that it is feasible for the student health center to leverage existing clinical data in a data warehouse by using OLAP reporting in order to improve patient care and health care services decision making. Historically, University health care centers have relied mainly on operational data sources for critical health care decision making. These sources of data do not contain enough information to allow health officials to recognize trends or predict how future changes in health care services might vastly improve overall heath care. Four proof of concept artifacts are constructed through design …
Data Summary From The Tampa Bay Interagency Seagrass Monitoring Program Through Year 2008, Walt Avery, Roger Johansson
Data Summary From The Tampa Bay Interagency Seagrass Monitoring Program Through Year 2008, Walt Avery, Roger Johansson
Reports
In 1997, the TBEP coordinated the creation of a bay-wide fixed transect seagrass monitoring program. The primary goal of the program is to document temporal and spatial changes in seagrass species composition, abundance, and distribution along a depth gradient. Several bay area agencies committed personnel and equipment to the program. Data collection from 60 transects began in 1998. Currently, 62 transects are monitored due to revisions in transect selection and location. This paper presents a general summary of Tampa Bay seagrass trends from 1998-2008

A European Case Study On The Intersection Between Public And Private Space: Increasing Breastfeeding Rates In A Modern World, Steven Matthew Stearmer
A European Case Study On The Intersection Between Public And Private Space: Increasing Breastfeeding Rates In A Modern World, Steven Matthew Stearmer
Theses and Dissertations
Health organizations around the world, from international bodies of government to local advocacy groups, are pushing the benefits of breastfeeding. While this is commendable, no study has ever been completed to assess on a regional scale the available policy options and their effectiveness at producing increased breastfeeding rates. It is my contention that five key factors influence the effectiveness of breastfeeding policies in Europe; Acceptance of public breastfeeding, maternity resource commitment, legal protection of breastfeeding in public and business space, a united voice in favor of breastfeeding, and limitations to formula advertisements in hospitals on media outlets. These five factors …

Extensions Of Nearest Shrunken Centroid Method For Classification, Tomohiko Funai
Theses and Dissertations
Stylometry assumes that the essence of the individual style of an author can be captured using a number of quantitative criteria, such as the relative frequencies of noncontextual words (e.g., or, the, and, etc.). Several statistical methodologies have been developed for authorship analysis. Jockers et al. (2009) utilize Nearest Shrunken Centroid (NSC) classification, a promising classification methodology in DNA microarray analysis for authorship analysis of the Book of Mormon. Schaalje et al. (2010) develop an extended NSC classification to remedy the problem of a missing author. Dabney (2005) and Koppel et al. (2009) suggest other modifications of NSC. This paper …
