Ballistic Missile Defense: Past And Future, Jacques S. Gansler Apr 2010

Ballistic Missile Defense: Past And Future, Jacques S. Gansler

Books

To help put the potential value of a national missile defense system in perspective, consider three scenarios, one modeled on a historical event, the other two hypothetical. These three scenarios make a point argued by proponents of continued exploration and deployment of ballistic missile defense systems: that it is essential to give future Presidents of the United States options for defending the homeland against missile attack.

An Analysis Of Restaurant Food Safety Violations: Human Factors, Non-Human Factors, And Food-Borne Illness, Jai Choung Apr 2010

An Analysis Of Restaurant Food Safety Violations: Human Factors, Non-Human Factors, And Food-Borne Illness, Jai Choung

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

An estimated 76 million food-borne illnesses occur in the United States each year, causing 325,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Food safety is an increasingly important topic to governmental food regulators, not only in trying to reduce the number of illnesses from contaminated food. Governmental regulators also are becoming aware of the vulnerability of the food supply chain as a target for bioterrorism. Recommendations have been developed to protect the U. S. food supply from terrorism, but little of the research and recommendations relate to the food-service level.

Eighty percent of reported cases …

The Way Of Sinners, Mary Westbrook Apr 2010

The Way Of Sinners, Mary Westbrook

English Theses & Dissertations

The Way of Sinners is a collection of short stories united by place and themes. The stories, most of which are told in first-person, take place in fictional and real towns around Virginia, in Tidewater, the Shenandoah Valley and the western part of the commonwealth, near Blacksburg. The stories concern women and girls who feel they have failed, who fear they cannot be redeemed. The characters want to be restored to dignity — to be whole again, good. Human nature stands in their way. The characters are keenly aware of slights and sins committed by and against them, and as …

Intergenerational Transfer Of Human Capital Among Immigrant Families, Kelsey Hample, '10 Apr 2010

Intergenerational Transfer Of Human Capital Among Immigrant Families, Kelsey Hample, '10

The Park Place Economist

An important implication of the increasing number and diversity of immigrants is the exponentially increasing number of immigrant descendants, especially those who have not fully assimilated to American culture. As this number grows, it becomes increasingly important to study the differences in human capital that immigrants offer compared to natives, and how that human capital benefits their children. Once this is understood, policy can be enacted both to increase the efficiency of these benefits and to try to translate these benefits to native children. For instance, if being bilingual greatly increases the earnings of second-generation immigrants, scholarships could be given …

Parenting Behaviors And Their Relationship With A Child's Weight Status, Michele L. Polfuss Apr 2010

Parenting Behaviors And Their Relationship With A Child's Weight Status, Michele L. Polfuss

Dissertations (1934 -)

Pediatric obesity is a critical healthcare problem that has continued to increase in prevalence. It has been well established that pediatric obesity is a multifactorial problem

with no easy solution. Complicating matters has been the fact that there has been a disproportionate increase across ethnicity and socioeconomic status. Parents have been found to play a critical role supporting a child's behavior through environment, role modeling and ongoing parenting practices.

This study utilized a cross sectional correlational study design to determine what the relationship is, if any, between a child's weight status and parenting behaviors. In addition the study examined if …

Triply Differential Single Ionization Of Argon: Charge Effects For Positron And Electron Impact, Sebastian Otranto, Ronald E. Olson, O. G. De Lucio, Robert D. Dubois Apr 2010

Triply Differential Single Ionization Of Argon: Charge Effects For Positron And Electron Impact, Sebastian Otranto, Ronald E. Olson, O. G. De Lucio, Robert D. Dubois

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Triply differential single ionization of Ar by 200 eV positron and electron impact is measured and calculated. For an unequivocal test of kinematic differences, fully differential ejected electron angular distributions are measured using the same experimental apparatus and conditions for both positron and electron impact. The binary/recoil intensity ratios are shown to significantly differ for the two projectiles. These data are used to test theoretical calculations.

Molecular Characterization Of The Soluble Fraction Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter Obtained By Chemical Oxidation With Nitric Acid, Amanda Susan Priest Apr 2010

Molecular Characterization Of The Soluble Fraction Of Atmospheric Particulate Matter Obtained By Chemical Oxidation With Nitric Acid, Amanda Susan Priest

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

The availability of information regarding the composition of ambient atmospheric particulate matter and the transformations that these compounds may undergo upon atmospheric transit is surprisingly absent. Electrospray ionization Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry is used in this study to rapidly evaluate the composition of the water-soluble organic fraction of standard and collected atmospheric particulate matter samples, and the changes that these mixtures undergo upon oxidation with nitric acid. The standard samples include representative particulate matter collected over the course of a year in Washington, D.C. and particulate matter from the exhaust of a diesel-powered engine. The collected sample …

Rao's Quadratic Entropy And Some New Applications, Yueqin Zhao Apr 2010

Rao's Quadratic Entropy And Some New Applications, Yueqin Zhao

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

Many problems in statistical inference are formulated as testing the diversity of populations. The entropy functions measure the similarity of a distribution function to the uniform distribution and hence can be used as a measure of diversity. Rao (1982a) proposed the concept of quadratic entropy. Its concavity property makes the decomposition similar to ANOVA for categorical data feasible. In this thesis, after reviewing the properties and providing a modification to quadratic entropy, various applications of quadratic entropy are explored. First, analysis of quadratic entropy with the suggested modification to analyze the contingency table data is explored. Then its application to …

Genre, Database, And The Anatomy Of The Digital Archive, Elizabeth J. Vincelette Apr 2010

Genre, Database, And The Anatomy Of The Digital Archive, Elizabeth J. Vincelette

English Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to define shared characteristics of literary digital archives, specifically to explore how conceptual and structural qualities of such archives express generic qualities. In order to describe digital media such as database or digital archives, scholars resort to metaphors, and this study offers the metaphor of anatomy as a generic inscription with historical and methodological implications. The definition of the anatomy genre draws from Northrop Frye's in Anatomy of Criticism, in which Frye describes how anatomies are characterized by proliferating lists, the mixing of prose and non-prose forms, and self-reflexivity--under the guise of knowledge …

Maturing International Cooperation To Address The Cyberspace Attack Attribution Problem, Jeff J. Mcneil Apr 2010

Maturing International Cooperation To Address The Cyberspace Attack Attribution Problem, Jeff J. Mcneil

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

One of the most significant challenges to deterring attacks in cyberspace is the difficulty of identifying and attributing attacks to specific state or non-state actors. The lack of technical detection capability moves the problem into the legal realm; however, the lack of domestic and international cyberspace legislation makes the problem one of international cooperation. Past assessments have led to collective paralysis pending improved technical and legal advancements. This paper demonstrates, however, that any plausible path to meaningful defense in cyberspace must include a significant element of international cooperation and regime formation.

The analytical approach diverges from past utilitarian-based assessments to …

Doubling Nato: Functional And Geographical Enlargement Of The Alliance, Ergodan Kurt Apr 2010

Doubling Nato: Functional And Geographical Enlargement Of The Alliance, Ergodan Kurt

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation studies NATO expansion as institutional adaptation. More specifically, it examines the interaction between NATO's functional and geographical enlargement. This study asserts that there is a close relationship between NATO's new functions and its enlargement. Over time, NATO evolved from a collective defense alliance to a comprehensive security organization. As NATO undertook new functions, its capabilities no longer matched the requirements of the new functions. The geographical enlargement, in fact, constitutes a vehicle for the fulfillment of the capability shortfall.

Furthermore, this dissertation asserts that the new security environment will force NATO to focus on the regions at a …

Characterization Of An Implicitly Resistively-Loaded Monopole Antenna In Lossy Liquid Media, Colleen J. Fox, Paul M. Meaney, Fridon Shubitidze, Lincoln Potwin, Keith D. Paulsen Apr 2010

Characterization Of An Implicitly Resistively-Loaded Monopole Antenna In Lossy Liquid Media, Colleen J. Fox, Paul M. Meaney, Fridon Shubitidze, Lincoln Potwin, Keith D. Paulsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

Abstract

Microwave tomographic imaging of the breast for cancer detection is a topic of considerable interest because of the potential to exploit the apparent high-dielectric property contrast between normal and malignant tissue. An important component in the realization of an imaging system is the antenna array to be used for signal transmission/detection. The monopole antenna has proven to be useful in our implementation because it can be easily and accurately modeled and can be positioned in close proximity to the imaging target with high-element density when configured in an imaging array. Its frequency response is broadened considerably when radiating in …

Role Of Flgt In Anchoring The Flagellum Of Vibrio Cholerae, Raquel M. Martinez, Brooke A. Jude, Thomas J. Kirn, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor Apr 2010

Role Of Flgt In Anchoring The Flagellum Of Vibrio Cholerae, Raquel M. Martinez, Brooke A. Jude, Thomas J. Kirn, Karen Skorupski, Ronald K. Taylor

Dartmouth Scholarship

Flagellar motility has long been regarded as an important virulence factor. In Vibrio cholerae, the single polar flagellum is essential for motility as well as for proper attachment and colonization. In this study, we demonstrate that the novel flagellar protein FlgT is involved in anchoring the flagellum to the V. cholerae cell. A screen for novel colonization factors by use of TnphoA mutagenesis identified flgT. An in-frame deletion of flgT established that FlgT is required for attachment, colonization, and motility. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that while the flgT mutant is capable of assembling a phenotypically normal flagellum, …

A Research Study Of Role Conflict, Role Ambiguity, Job Satisfaction, And Burnout Among Financial Advisors, Courtney Fichter Apr 2010

A Research Study Of Role Conflict, Role Ambiguity, Job Satisfaction, And Burnout Among Financial Advisors, Courtney Fichter

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The role of the financial advisor has changed from the traditional broker to a more "counselor-type" role. This change has made financial advisors more susceptible to the traditional stressors seen by other "counselor-type" professions. Therefore, it is important to understand current levels of role stressors (role ambiguity and role conflict), job satisfaction, and burnout (exhaustion, cynicism, and professional efficacy) among financial advisors.

The purpose of this research is to measure demographics, levels of role conflict, role ambiguity, job satisfaction, and burnout to identify any significant relationships. The theoretical framework includes Maslach's Burnout Inventory (1981), Herzberg's Motivation-Hygiene Theory (1959), and role …

Attitudes Towards Megan's Law And Juvenile Sex Offenders, Debra Lee Cochrane Apr 2010

Attitudes Towards Megan's Law And Juvenile Sex Offenders, Debra Lee Cochrane

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Sex offender registration laws are very controversial. All fifty states require adult sex offenders to register. Twenty-eight states have extended registration and community notification requirements to juveniles (Hiller, 1998). These states seem to have failed to look at the uniqueness of juvenile sex offending. Juveniles have a very low recidivism rate and complex issues of culpability from age-of-consent laws. Applying Megan's Law to juveniles could have considerable negative consequences for juveniles' social development, particularly because one of the main stipulations of the law requires the juvenile to notify their school. Rehabilitation is a key factor of the juvenile justice system …

Erasing Boundaries: Masculinities, Sexual Minorities, And Employment Discrimination, Ann C. Mcginley Apr 2010

Erasing Boundaries: Masculinities, Sexual Minorities, And Employment Discrimination, Ann C. Mcginley

Scholarly Works

This Article analyzes the application of employment discrimination law to sexual minorities--lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex individuals. It evaluates Title VII and state anti-discrimination laws' treatment of these individuals, and is the first article to use masculinities research, theoretical and empirical, to explain employment discrimination against sexual minorities. While the Article concludes that new legislation would further the interests of sexual minorities, it posits that it is neither necessary nor sufficient to solving the employment discrimination problems of sexual minorities. A major problem lies in the courts' binary view of sex and gender, a view that identifies men and …
