Differential Damages Sustained From Hurricane Ike On Varying Growth Forms Of Coral At Distinct Locations Off The Coast Of South Caicos, Turks And Caicos Islands, Caitlyn A. Kenny

Pell Scholars and Senior Theses

In September 2008, Hurricane Ike hit South Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands as a Category 4 hurricane. This study examines the differential damages caused to varying common growth forms, size, locations, and depths of coral by Hurricane Ike on South Caicos reefs. Belt transect techniques as well as line intercept techniques were conducted at nine sites, looking at 14 common species of coral, representing four different growth forms. A total of 9,011 coral colonies were surveyed. 2,832 colonies (31.4%) were found to have at least one type of damage. It was expected that branching and digitate growth forms as well …

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may be associated with breast cancer. However, the carcinogenicity of PAHs on the human breast remains unclear. Certain carcinogens may be associated with specific mutation patterns in the p53 tumor suppressor gene, thereby contributing information about disease etiology.

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that associations of PAH-related exposures with breast cancer would differ according to tumor p53 mutation status, effect, type, and number.

METHODS: We examined this possibility in a population-based case–control study using polytomous logistic regression. As previously reported, 151 p53 mutations among 859 tumors were identified using Surveyor nuclease and …

Energy Efficiency Merits More Than A Nudge, Michael P. Vandenbergh, Thomas Dietz, Gerald T. Gardner, Jonathan Gilligan, Paul Stern

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

In their policy forum (Behavior and Energy Policy,” 5 March, p. 1204), H. Allcott and S. Mullainathan identify an important opportunity for reducing energy consumption inexpensively by applying behavioral science. Even larger opportunities can be realized, however, by combining behavioral interventions with other policy tools to address a wider range of behaviors. The field policy experiments cited by the authors use behavioral “nudges” to change home equipment use. The full potential of behavioral interventions comes from inducing people to adopt energy-efficient technology.

Climate Change Adaptation And The Structural Transformation Of Environmental Law, J.B. Ruhl Apr 2010

Climate Change Adaptation And The Structural Transformation Of Environmental Law, J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

The path of environmental law has come to a cliff called climate change, and there is no turning around. As climate change policy dialogue emerged in the 1990s, however, the perceived urgency of attention to mitigation strategies designed to regulate sources of greenhouse gas emissions quickly snuffed out meaningful progress on the formulation of adaptation strategies designed to respond to the effects of climate change on humans and the environment. Only recently has this adaptation deficit become a concern now actively included in climate change policy debate. Previously treating talk of adaptation as taboo, the climate change policy world has …

Climbing Mount Mitigation: A Proposal For Legislative Suspension Of Climate Change "Mitigation Litigation", J.B. Ruhl

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

This Article focuses on a different but related fundamental policy design question: How should federal agencies implement existing statutory authorities to contribute to a coherent national climate change policy? One might ask why we should be concerned with how existing laws can be employed given reasonable expectations that the Obama Administration and Congress are poised to make gains on new federal initiatives. For several reasons, however, it is unlikely that even bold new federal legislation-a comprehensive carbon tax on all fossil fuel consumption or a cap-and-trade program broadly encompassing major emission sources-will obviate the need to solve the puzzle of …

Chemistry Faculty Research

The spliceosome is a complex small nuclear RNA (snRNA)-protein machine that removes introns from pre-mRNAs via two successive phosphoryl transfer reactions. The chemical steps are isoenergetic, yet splicing requires at least eight RNA-dependent ATPases responsible for substantial conformational rearrangements. To comprehensively monitor pre-mRNA conformational dynamics, we developed a strategy for single-molecule FRET (smFRET) that uses a small, efficiently spliced yeast pre-mRNA, Ubc4, in which donor and acceptor fluorophores are placed in the exons adjacent to the 5′ and 3′ splice sites. During splicing in vitro, we observed a multitude of generally reversible time-and ATP-dependent conformational transitions of individual pre-mRNAs. The …

Cd1d-Dependent B-Cell Help By Nk-Like T Cells Leads To Enhanced And Sustained Production Of Bacillus Anthracis Lethal Toxin-Neutralizing Antibodies, T. Scott Devera, Lindsay M. Aye, Gillian A. Lang, Sunil K. Joshi, Jimmy D. Ballard, Mark L. Lang

Bioelectrics Publications

The current Bacillus anthracis vaccine consists largely of protective antigen (PA), the protein of anthrax toxin that mediates entry of edema factor (EF) or lethal factor (LF) into cells. PA induces protective antibody (Ab)-mediated immunity against Bacillus anthracis but has limited efficacy and duration. We previously demonstrated that activation of CD1d-restricted natural killer-like T cells (NKT) with a CD1d-binding glycolipid led to enhanced Ab titers specific for foreign antigen (Ag). We therefore tested the hypothesis that activation of NKT cells with the CD1d ligand (alpha-galactosylceramide [alpha-GC]) at the time of immunization improves PA-specific Ab responses. We observed that alpha-GC enhanced …

Optical Limiting Study Of Double Wall Carbon Nanotube-Fullerene Hybrids, Kang-Shyang Liao, Jun Wang, Daniel Fruchtl, Nigel Alley, Enrico Andreoli, Eoghan Dillon, Andrew Barron, Hansoo Kim, Hugh Byrne, Werner Blau, Seamus Curran

Articles

In order to merge complementary temporal and spatial nonlinear optical characteristics of Fullerene and carbon nanotubes, synthesis of double wall carbon nanotube-Fullerene hybrid was performed by covalently linking DWNT and C60 by amination reaction with polyethylenimine. DWNT-Fullerene hybrids were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Optical limiting performance of DWNT-Fullerene hybrids is superior to those of Fullerenes and SWNTs at the same level (~ 80%) of transmission. Whereas nonlinear scattering is an evident mechanism, reverse saturable absorption from Fullerene moieties has significant contribution. Charge transfer between the DWNT and Fullerene moieties may play an important role …

Lead-Phase And Red-Stripe Color Morphs Of Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus) Differ In Hematological Stress Indices: A Consequence Of Differential Predation Pressure?, Andrew K. Davis, Joseph Milanovich

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Throughout the animal kingdom there are species that have two or more phenotypic forms or ‘morphs’, and many of these are amphibians. In North America, the red-backed salamander Plethodon cinereus can have either a red dorsal stripe or no dorsal stripe (lead-phase form), and evidence to date indicates the lead-phase form incurs a greater number of attacks from predators. In a recent collection of 51 P. cinereus, blood smears of both color morphs (35 red-stripe, 16 lead-phase) were examined to obtain numbers of circulating leukocytes (via light microscopy), which can be used to indirectly estimate levels of stress hormones …

The Development Of An Effective Water-Soluble Receptor For Pyrene Derivative Dyes, Ashley Longstreet Apr 2010

The Development Of An Effective Water-Soluble Receptor For Pyrene Derivative Dyes, Ashley Longstreet

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

A receptor with enhanced water solubility was synthesized from an existing receptor to be used as a pyranine fluorescence quencher in endovesiculation detection assays. The existing receptor consisted of a cyclen core with four protruding arms containing an aryl nitro group at each end. Its poor water solubility limited the accuracy and precision of the endovesiculation assay because the low concentration of receptor did not match the concentration of pyranine. To increase the water solubility, ethoxy groups were attached to the ends of each arm by first selectively reducing the nitro group to an amine with NaBHU4, H2, and a …

Developing An Educational Module For Advanced Practice Nurses: The Screening And Management Of Postpartum Depression In Primary Care, Lynne Weiler

Nursing Masters

Postpartum depression (PPD) is thought to affect 13% of new mothers. Yet it is believed that up to 50% of cases escape detection, resulting in a host of adverse sequelae for mother, infant and family. The current state of the science is promising, as advances in pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy have demonstrated PPD's amenability to treatment. However, expertise among providers appears to be deficient, as seen in survey results which portray most physicians and nurse practitioners largely ill-equipped to detect and deal with PPD. A rich opportunity to intervene exists, particularly within primary care settings, where suffering women may be encountered. …

Zeczycki, Martin St. Maurice, W. Wallace Cleland, John C. Wallace, Paul V. Attwood

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

The roles of Arg548 and Gln552 residues in the active site of the carboxyl transferase domain of Rhizobium etli pyruvate carboxylase were investigated using site-directed mutagenesis. Mutation of Arg548 to alanine or glutamine resulted in the destabilization of the quaternary structure of the enzyme, suggesting that this residue has a structural role. Mutations R548K, Q552N, and Q552A resulted in a loss of the ability to catalyze pyruvate carboxylation, biotin-dependent decarboxylation of oxaloacetate, and the exchange of protons between pyruvate and water. These mutants retained the ability to catalyze reactions that occur at the active site of the biotin carboxylase domain, …

Pet Custody: Distorting Language And The Law, John Dewitt Gregory Apr 2010

Pet Custody: Distorting Language And The Law, John Dewitt Gregory

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Pets or companion animals are the property of those who own them. In this article, I shall show that pets that are the subject of disputes between divorcing spouses or separating unmarried couples should continue to be characterized as property under a rational legal system. Proposals in the law review literature and halting, early attempts by some courts to place pets in some category other than property, which flirted with a standard derived from the prevailing best-interest-of-the-child doctrine in conventional child custody and visitation cases, are, at best, vanity. Such proposals do violence to both the language and the law …

Discovering The Vision In Beth Moore's "Breaking Free" Message: Applying Bormann's Fantasy Theme Analysis To Evaluate The Message, April Nicole Pressley

Masters Theses

Beth Moore, Christian speaker and author, has become a prominent figure in Christian circles. She ministers to over a million people a year with her messages. Breaking Free is her "life message." This project analyzes 6 of 11 messages from Breaking Free. Using Bormann's Fantasy Theme Analysis, seven fantasies emerged from the messages, which yielded a rhetorical vision that describes what Beth Moore believes a woman should be like after hearing her message. After that analysis, the fantasies where compared to evangelical Christian doctrine. That analysis determined that Moore's underlying message is valid and acceptable to the Christian audience she …
