Symbiosis In Subterranean Termites: A Review Of Insights From Molecular Studies, Claudia Husseneder Apr 2010

Symbiosis In Subterranean Termites: A Review Of Insights From Molecular Studies, Claudia Husseneder

Faculty Publications

The symbiotic relationship of termites and their eukaryotic and prokaryotic gut microbiota is a focal point of research because of the important roles symbionts play in termite nutrition. The use of molecular methods has recently provided valuable insights into the species diversity and the roles of microorganisms in the guts of termites. This paper provides a review of the current knowledge of symbiont species inventories, genome analysis, and gene expression in the guts of subterranean termites. Particular emphasis is given to the termite genera Reticulitermes and Coptotermes (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), because they contain pest species of global impact in their native …

Strict Lyapunov Function Constructions Under Lasalle Conditions With An Application To Lotka-Volterra Systems, Frédéric Mazenc, Michael Malisoff

Faculty Publications

We provide new techniques for building explicit global strict Lyapunov functions for broad classes of periodic time varying nonlinear systems satisfying LaSalle conditions. We illustrate our work using the Lotka-Volterra model, which plays a fundamental role in bioengineering. We use our strict Lyapunov constructions to prove robustness of the Lotka-Volterra tracking dynamics to uncertainty in the death rates. © 2006 IEEE.

Antibacterial Activity Of Chitosans With Different Degrees Of Deacetylation And Viscosities, Eun Ju Jung, Dal Kyoung Youn, Shin Ho Lee, Hong Kyoon No, Jong Gill Ha, Witoon Prinyawiwatkul

Faculty Publications

Antibacterial activities of six acid-soluble [two degrees of deacetylation (DD) × three viscosities] and two water-soluble chitosans (two DD with similar viscosities) were examined against eight gram-negative (Pseudomonas fluorescens, Proteus vulgaris, Erwinia carotovora, Serratia marcescens, Escherichia coli, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, V. vulnificus, and Salmonella Typhimurium) and six gram-positive bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus, Lactobacillus curvatus, and L. plantarum). Antibacterial activities of chitosans differed depending on the chitosan types and bacteria tested. Water-soluble chitosans inhibited bacterial growth by one to eight log cycles at 0.1% concentration; however, the effects were much lesser than those observed with 0.05% acid-soluble …

Predicting Global Change Effects On Forest Biomass And Composition In South-Central Siberia, Eric J. Gustafson, Anatoly Z. Shvidenko, Brian R. Sturtevant, Robert M. Scheller

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Multiple global changes such as timber harvesting in areas not previously disturbed by cutting and climate change will undoubtedly affect the composition and spatial distribution of boreal forests, which will, in turn, affect the ability of these forests to retain carbon and maintain biodiversity. To predict future states of the boreal forest reliably, it is necessary to understand the complex interactions among forest regenerative processes (succession), natural disturbances (e.g., fire, wind, and insects), and anthropogenic disturbances (e.g., timber harvest). We used a landscape succession and disturbance model (LANDIS-II) to study the relative effects of climate change, timber harvesting, and insect …

Legal Theory And The Anthropocene Challenge: The Implications Of Law, Science, And Policy For Weapons Of Mass Destruction And Climate Change: The Expanding The Constraining Boundaries Of Legal Space And Time And The Challenge Of The Anthropocene, Winston P. Nagan, Judit K. Otvos

UF Law Faculty Publications

The idea of legal theory as a self-conscious theory for inquiry about law has opened up the framework of observation and participation. It has heightened social responsibility in ways that have been creative and receptive to analogies and metaphors from the developments in modern science. This paper explores some of these dominant borrowed metaphors. It further emphasizes the importance of the wide range of concerns in law technically, as well as the law’s capacity to manage and manipulate space and time implicating such issues as weapons of mass destruction, rights of indigenous people, deforestation, and climate change. By giving the …

(Re)Constructing The Framework Of Work/Family, Nancy E. Dowd Apr 2010

(Re)Constructing The Framework Of Work/Family, Nancy E. Dowd

UF Law Faculty Publications

When we talk about the connections between work, family, and marriage, what are our assumptions or our implicit model? In this essay, I hope to expose the importance of questioning the framework within which we operate. Marriage continues to be a core focus of the typical family law course. As a matter of public policy, supporting and valuing marriage, and concern about the conflict between work and family because of the strains it imposes on marriage, makes balancing work and family within a marital framework a focus of law and policy.

In this essay, I argue that we need to …

In Village of Willowbrook v. Olech, the property owner alleged "the Village intentionally demanded a 33-foot easement as a condition of connecting her property to the municipal water supply where the Village required only a 15-foot easement from other similarly situated property owners." The complaint further described the village's demand as "irrational and wholly arbitrary." According to the Seventh Circuit, the property owner could allege an equal protection violation by asserting the state's action was motivated solely by a "spiteful effort to 'get' him for reasons wholly unrelated to any legitimate state objective." On appeal, the Supreme Court agreed, …

The Discursive Failure In Comparative Tax Law, Omri Y. Marian Apr 2010

The Discursive Failure In Comparative Tax Law, Omri Y. Marian

UF Law Faculty Publications

Tax comparatists tend to bemoan the grim status of their chosen field. Complaints are aimed both at the scarcity of decent comparative legal tax scholarship, and at the lack of a theoretical foundation for the study of comparative tax law. The purpose of this Article is to portray a more sanguine, yet critical, view of this field. Sanguine, since a sympathetic reading of contemporary comparative tax scholarship demonstrates that there is more than enough such scholarship to generate a lively debate on comparative tax works and their methodologies. Critical, since all of these works fail to produce even the faintest …

Corn, Carbon, And Conservation: Rethinking U.S. Agricultural Policy In A Changing Global Environment, Mary Jane Angelo

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article explores a range of issues related to both the regulatory and incentive-based federal programs that affect the crops we grow, the manner in which they are grown, and the human and environmental impacts of such programs. The Article evaluates the 2008 Farm Bill and describes how the policies contained in it influence virtually every aspect of agriculture, from the decision to grow certain crops, the amount of crops grown, the industrial manner. This Article focuses on one particular commodity, corn, which while ubiquitous and seemingly pedestrian, is perhaps one of the major environmental offenders, and for which the …
