To Save Time And Money... Slow Cook A Safe And Delicious Meal, Brenda Sternwedel, Ellyn Eddy
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
SLOW-COOKER SAFETY Slow cooking can provide a complete meal that is ready and waiting after a busy day, and without the expense of going out to eat. Using a slow cooker is not only economical, it is also convenient. A slow cooker, often referred to as a crockpot, is a countertop electrical appliance that cooks foods slowly at a low temperature, generally between 170˚F and 280˚F. The direct heat, lengthy cooking time, and the steam created within the tightly covered container combine to destroy bacteria and make the slow cooker a safe process.

Modeling The Long Term Effects Of Alendronate On Bone Mass Preservation Of The Femur With Articular Surface And Total Hip Replacements, Trevor J. Hryce
Master's Theses
Calculating femoral bone density changes after hip arthroplasty is of interest to researchers and clinicians for predicting the longevity of the prosthetic implant and the surrounding bone. Recently clinicians have been administering bisphosphonate drugs in an attempt to reduce the bone resorption due to stress shielding caused by these implants. Current strain-adaptive computational models with bisphosphonate treatment don’t predict the long term effects or look at treatment with hip resurfacing implants. The main goal of this study was to create and validate a computer model of the human femur incorporating a bone remodeling algorithm based on biological remodeling processes and …

FHSS Mentored Research Conference
Learning and memory are phenomena made possible via physical changes at neuronal synapses in the brain, a process known as synaptic plasticity. Dysfunctions in synaptic plasticity contribute to such diseases and disorders as Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease, and retrograde amnesia (Brunetal., 2001). Recently, TRPV1 activation was shown to mediate synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus (Gibsonetal., 2008). TRPV1 is a presynaptic ligand-gated calcium (Ca2+) channel located throughout the CNS, including in the hippocampus. TRPV1 channels are activated by the binding of capsaicin, which is responsible for producing the “heat” of red peppers. Several studies implicate a role for TRPV1 in contextual …

Biogeographic Breaks In Vanuatu, A Nascent Oceanic Archipelago, Alison M. Hamilton, Elaine R. Klein, Christopher C. Austin
Biogeographic Breaks In Vanuatu, A Nascent Oceanic Archipelago, Alison M. Hamilton, Elaine R. Klein, Christopher C. Austin
Faculty Publications
The study of distinct biogeographic demarcations has played a pivotal role in our understanding processes responsible for patterns of species distributions and, importantly, the role of geologic processes in promoting biotic diversification. Biogeographic barriers such as Wallace's line have been shown to be the result of old geologic processes shaping ancient faunal or floral diversification events. Based on distributions of birds, bats, reptiles, plants, and invertebrates we identify a distinct biogeographic disjunction in Vanuatu, a geologically nascent oceanic archipelago. We discuss mechanisms contributing to this concordant pattern across these disparate taxonomic groups in light of geologic history, ocean currents, vegetation, …

The zebra finch is an important model organism in several fields with unique relevance to human neuroscience. Like other songbirds, the zebra finch communicates through learned vocalizations, an ability otherwise documented only in humans and a few other animals and lacking in the chickenthe only bird with a sequenced genome until now. Here we present a structural, functional and comparative analysis of the genome sequence of the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata), which is a songbird belonging to the large avian order Passeriformes. We find that the overall structures of the genomes are similar in zebra finch and chicken, but they …

Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) cleaves collagen, allowing leukocytes to traffic toward the vasculature and the lymphatics. When MMP-9 is unregulated by tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), this can lead to tissue destruction. Dendritic cells (DCs) infiltrate the oral mucosa increasingly in chronic periodontitis, characterized by infection with several pathogens including Porphyromonas gingivalis. In this study, human monocyte-derived DCs were pulsed with different doses of lipopolysaccharide of P. gingivalis 381 and of Escherichia coli type strain 25922, as well as whole live isogenic fimbriae-deficient mutant strains of P. gingivalis 381. Levels of induction of MMP-9 and TIMP-1, as well as interleukin-10 (IL-10), …
The Construct Of Resilience And Its Application To The Context Of Political Violence, Benjamin Doty
The Construct Of Resilience And Its Application To The Context Of Political Violence, Benjamin Doty
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
This article is intended to be the first in a series of inquiries into the theory and application of the construct of resilience. The article begins by providing a synopsis of the history, conceptualization, and significance of the construct across various fields of scientific examination. This first section focuses explicitly on the complexity of resilience. The next section follows with a discussion of whether the construct—in light of its most basic and established tenets—is applicable to the context of political violence. It does so by presenting analyses of data collected from youth and young adults living in the conflict-affected regions …

Context: Whether a child with low bone mineral density (BMD) at one point in time will continue to have low BMD, despite continued growth and maturation, is important clinically. The stability of a characteristic during growth is referred to as “tracking.”
Objective: We examined the degree of tracking in bone mineral content (BMC) and BMD during childhood and adolescence and investigated whether tracking varied according to age, sexual maturation, and changes in growth status.
Design: We conducted a longitudinal study with measurements at baseline and annually for 3 yr.
Setting: The Bone Mineral Density in Childhood Study was conducted at …

Parasite Ecology Of Fish With Black Spot Disease, Sarah C. Kirse
Parasite Ecology Of Fish With Black Spot Disease, Sarah C. Kirse
Senior Honors Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to obtain an understanding of parasite ecology and the incidence of black spot disease in freshwater fish. Parasite morphology, transmission, and life cycles are important to understand before being able to control a parasite. Uvulifer ambloplitis is a larval trematode worm that infects freshwater fish and causes a black pigment to be produced in response to its metacercariae stage. Other immune responses and effects on the intermediate hosts, fish and snails, are examined. A study was done on the fish of Rutledge Creek, Virginia to take a closer look at the epidemiology of this …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Leaf Of Aspila Africana On Some Pathogenic Organisms Of Clinical Origin, I.I. Anibijuwon, O.P. Duyilemi, A.K. Onifade
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The antimicrobial activities and Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the extracts of Aspilia africana were evaluated against five bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli). History of the organisms used indicated pathogenicity during laboratory analysis of specimen collected. Leaf of the plant was collected from the farm. The ethanolic and hot aqueous extracts were obtained by standard methods. The antimicrobial activity was conducted using a modified agar well diffusion method. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of Aspilia africana exerted antimicrobial effect on the test organisms at 12.5mg/ml, 25mg/ml, 50mg/ml and 100mg/ml concentrations, while the …
