Twenty-Nine Years Of Geomorphic Change At Elkhorn Slough, California, Brian James Spear
Twenty-Nine Years Of Geomorphic Change At Elkhorn Slough, California, Brian James Spear
SNS Master's Theses
This study utilized high-precision surveys to estimate 29 years of elevation change on the Elkhorn Slough marsh plain. There were 3 objectives to this study: 1) characterize the spatial variation in rates of net erosion/deposition and net vertical change with respect to the benchmark, 2) compare net vertical change rates to estimates of projected rate of sea-level rise in the region, and 3) determine linkages between land cover type and rate of net vertical change. We resurveyed 11 of the 13 original cross sections using the same methodology to collect new surface elevations for comparison with the original 1980 dataset. …
Effectiveness Of Rivpacs Predictive Models To Evaluate Diatom Response To Nutrient Stress In Coastal California Streams, Charles Ritz
Effectiveness Of Rivpacs Predictive Models To Evaluate Diatom Response To Nutrient Stress In Coastal California Streams, Charles Ritz
SNS Master's Theses
The goal of this project was to determine if predictive models of diatom assemblages would provide an effective method to report on biological degradation in streams along the Central Coast of California. This project focused on nutrient stress to evaluate stream water-quality degradation. I employed the River Invertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS) model with diatom assemblages. Diatoms were an accessible indicator of nutrient stress occurring in abundance on Central Coast streams. Diatom samples from 190 stream sites were used to construct and test the RIVPACS model. The RIVPACS methodology used a reference condition approach to compare assemblages at reference …

"Cap'n Bill is perhaps the last of the "second generation" naturalist-educators in North America. He and his contemporaries-men and women like Ann Comstock, Laurence Palmer, Fay Welch, E.K. Fretwell, L.H. Bailey-followed close upon the days of Louis Agassiz and Asa Gray. They were the great innovators in the development of techniques to revolutionize the education of children and the non-scientist with respect to science and humans affairs." -John A.Gustafson (1975)
A Comparative Study Of Academic Achievement, Social Skills, Autonomy: College-Aged Males With Or Without Their Biological Fathers, Peter Baron
Social Work Theses
There is a growing problem in today’s society of children growing up in father-less households. One demographic at risk is young developing males who grow up without their biological father due to incarceration, divorce, separation, and death. This can affect the cognitive development of child which can lead to the decline of social, academic, and self regulation capacities. Once this young man enters college, he must exercise these capacities to the best of his abilities in order to succeed. This research study provided an overview of the issue of absent fathers on their sons and their long-term effect on their …
Transitioning The Needs Of Children With Chronic Illness: Exploring Communication Between Hospitals And School Settings, Christina Marchitto
Transitioning The Needs Of Children With Chronic Illness: Exploring Communication Between Hospitals And School Settings, Christina Marchitto
Social Work Theses
Chronic illnesses like cancer, sickle cell anemia, HIV, hemophilia, and metabolic disorders are on the rise. Chronic illness can be defined as an ongoing health condition that requires specialized treatments and may cause limitations in functions, activities or social roles. There are multiple phases that individuals with chronic illness progress through while learning to cope with their condition. Children with chronic illness are likely to spend a great deal of time in doctor’s offices and in the hospital. This study hypothesized that there is limited support for and understanding of the needs of children with chronic illness once they leave …

Economic Development, Inequality And Malnutrition In India, Arnab Mukherji, Divya Rajaraman, Hema Swaminathan
Working Papers
Economic development and inequality is known to have an impact on health outcomes. We show this to be true in India where we study the effect of economic status on under and over nutrition. Inequality is measured using income or assets and we show that both matter for malnutrition. We find women are at much higher risk of being malnourished and this risk increases with age. Our results suggest that while under nutrition should remain a policy priority, rising over nutrition in the population cannot be ignored by nutritional planners.

The Reaction Of A Water Soluble Platinum Compound With Methionine And Derivatives, Yueh Ying Liao
The Reaction Of A Water Soluble Platinum Compound With Methionine And Derivatives, Yueh Ying Liao
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Water soluble platinum complexes are a recent area of emphasis of cisplatin chemistry. The water soluble complexes could have a reduced toxicity compared with cisplatin. Oxaliplatin, which has an oxalate leaving group, has previously been shown to have less nephro-toxicity and higher water solubility than cisplatin. [Pt(en)(oxalate)] (en = ethylenediamine) has been prepared from Pt(en)Cl2 and silver oxalate. This complex has been reacted with methionine and N-acetylmethionine at different molar ratios. At high Pt: methionine ratios, chelates with the sulfur and nitrogen atoms of the methionine are dominant; at lower Pt: methionine ratios, a bis-methionine product is formed. The en …

Service-Learning Program
Cancer, in all its forms, is a leading cause of death and serious disease. The pathology of cancer is very complicated. This combined with the fast pace of research and clinical innovation makes cancer biology a difficult topic, even for experts. As a consequence, patients who wish to gain a better understanding of cancer biology may find themselves stuck somewhere between the blog-a-sphere and technical journals. Cancer is a disease of miscommunication and confusion at the level of cellular signaling. In a sense, this theme of confusion extends to the experience of the patient. The body is in rebellion, perhaps …
Denial In Alcohol And Other Drug Use Disorders: A Critique Of Theory., Patricia A. Stoddard Dare, Leaanne Derigne
Denial In Alcohol And Other Drug Use Disorders: A Critique Of Theory., Patricia A. Stoddard Dare, Leaanne Derigne
Social Work Faculty Publications
Despite the centrality of the construct in the field of alcohol and other drug (AOD) addiction, denial remains poorly conceptualized. One reason for this narrow conceptualization is the recent unilateral devotion to the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). In an effort to demonstrate denial’s theoretical complexity, the TTM and five additional intuitively appealing theories of denial will be summarized. The strengths and weaknesses of each theory and possible treatment implications based on each theory will also be presented. The article concludes with a recommendation for future research to evaluate multiple theories of denial using consistent and rigorous research methodology in order to develop …

Spatial Clusters In Organic Farming: A Case Study Of Pulses Cultivation In Karnataka, Gopal Naik, Vishnuprasad Nagadevara
Working Papers
Introduction Spatial cluster has become an important concept in economic development research and policy practice, especially after its popularization in the Competitive Advantage of Nations2. Clusters are geographic concentrations of firms in related industries that benefit not only from agglomeration economies derived from their spatial proximity, but also from the increased competitive pressure as a result of the co-location. Policymakers and professional developers use industry clusters to select, describe and promote groups of regional industries that already exhibit or have the potential to develop a regional competitive advantage3. Herr4 argues that "industry cluster identification and analysis can also allow planners …

Biochemistry and Microbiology
Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is characterized by rapid progression and low survival rates. Therefore, novel therapeutic agents are urgently needed for this disease. Capsaicin, the active ingredient of chilli peppers, displays antiproliferative activity in prostate and epidermoid cancer in vitro. However, the anti-proliferative activity of capsaicin has not been studied in human SCLCs. The present manuscript fills this void of knowledge and explores the anti-proliferative effect of capsaicin in SCLC in vitro and in vivo.
Methodology/Principal Findings: BrdU assays and PCNA ELISAs showed that capsaicin displays robust anti-proliferative activity in four human SCLC cell lines. Furthermore, capsaicin potently …

Effect Of Machining Feed On Surface Roughness In Cutting 6061 Aluminum, Mathew Kuttolamadom, Sina Hamzehlouia, Laine Mears
Publications
The general manufacturing objective during the fabrication of automotive components, particularly through machining, can be stated as the striving to achieve predefined product quality characteristics within equipment, cost and time constraints. The current state of the economy and the consequent market pressure has forced vehicle manufacturers to simultaneously reduce operating expenses along with further improving product quality. This paper examines the achievability of surface roughness specifications within efforts to reduce automotive component manufacture cycle time, particularly by changing cutting feeds. First, the background and attractiveness of aluminum as a lightweight automotive material is discussed. Following this, the methodologies employed for …
