Eastern White-winged Doves (Zenaida asiatica asiatica) in Texas have expanded northward since about 1920 and established urban populations throughout the state. Although nest success has been measured indirectly using indices, actual productivity has yet to be thoroughly investigated. We were interested in determining recruitment into a White-winged Dove population with a known area of occupancy by measuring productivity (nest success and estimated fledgling survivorship). We used nest monitoring and mark-recapture techniques to assess these parameters in Mason, Texas (Mason County) from 25 May–11 August 2006.

Isolation And Identification Of Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus In Mosquito Pools, Timothy Bender

The Eastern Equine Encephalitis Virus (EEEV) is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes of many genera. This virus has a high mortality rate and frequent life-altering complications for survivors of infection. The current practice for isolating and identifying the EEEV has been restricted to testing pools of 50 or less mosquitoes. A procedure for simulating one infected mosquito in a pool of 100 was established and tested. Data collected shows the threshold pool size can be increased to 100 without loss of specificity or accuracy. This increased will be met with many benefits including economic savings and increased time efficiency.

Tuberculosis affects one-third of the world's population and is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). Due to the rise of multi-drug resistant strains of the bacteria, a new antibiotic needs to be developed. FtsZ, a tubulin homologue, plays an essential role in bacterial cell division therefore making it a novel anti-microbial target in drug resistant strains of Mtb. Previous works from our laboratory have shown that a number of 2,5,6- and 2,5,7-trisubstituted benzimidazoles possess significant activity against Mtb by interfering with filamental temperature sensitive protein Z (FtsZ) polymerization. This study determined the state of the practice and emerging trends in developing greenhouse gas (GHG) thresholds of significance for use under the California Environmental Policy Act (CEQA). To describe the adopted, proposed or considered approaches for developing thresholds of significance by air districts and the thought processes behind these decisions, information was obtained through surveys and phone interviews from twelve employees of air districts in California, State agencies, and consultants that are considered experts on this issue. On-board gimbal systems for camera stabilization in helicopters are typically based on linear models. Such models, however, are inaccurate due to system nonlinearities and complexities. As an alternative approach, artificial neural networks can provide a more accurate model of the gimbal system based on their non-linear mapping and generalization capabilities.

This thesis investigates the applications of artificial neural networks to model the inertial characteristics (on the azimuth axis) of the inner gimbal in a gyro-stabilized multi-gimbal system. Oilfield produced waters (OPWs) are brought to the surface when oil reservoirs contained in water-bearing geologic units are extracted. Large volumes of OPW present environmental challenges concerning disposal, as well as potential opportunities for beneficial use if constituents posing risk can be remediated. Neuromodulators including gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and sex steroids help integrate an animal's internal physiological state with incoming external cues, and can have profound effects on the processing of behaviorally relevant information, particularly from the olfactory system. While GnRH and steroid receptors are present in olfactory processing regions across vertebrates, little is known about whether their expression levels change with internal physiological state or external social cues. Interactions between membrane proteins and the soluble fraction are essential for signal transduction and for regulating nutrient transport. To gain insights into the membrane-based interactome, 3,852 open reading frames (ORFs) out of a target list of 8,383 representing membrane and signaling proteins from Arabidopsis thaliana were cloned into a Gatewaycompatible vector. The mating-based split ubiquitin system was used to screen for potential protein-protein interactions (pPPIs) among 490 Arabidopsis ORFs. A binary robotic screen between 142 receptor-like kinases (RLKs), 72 transporters, 57 soluble protein kinases and phosphatases, 40 glycosyltransferases, 95 proteins of various functions, and 89 proteins with unknown function detected …

Namibia is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa, but well known for its richness in species and sustainable natural resource utilization. The Namibian farming sector consists mainly of extensive farming systems. Cattle production contributes 54% of the livestock sector's production output, followed by sheep and goats (25%), hides and skins (9%), and other forms of agricultural production (12%). Namibia's freehold farmers have obtained ownership rights over land and livestock since the early 1900s; commercial rights over wildlife and plants were given to freehold farmers in 1967 and to communal farmers in 1996. The gene bb0250 of Borrelia burgdorferi is a homolog of the dedA family, encoding integral inner membrane proteins that are present in nearly all species of bacteria. To date, no precise function has been attributed to any dedA gene. Unlike many bacterial species, such as Escherichia coli, which has eight dedA genes, B. burgdorferi possesses only one, annotated bb0250, providing a unique opportunity to investigate the functions of the dedA family. Nuclear Factor κB (NF-κB) proteins make up a large family of eukaryotic transcription factors that regulate many important cellular functions, including cell signaling, cell growth, development, cell death by apoptosis, and immune and inflammatory responses, and has been shown to be involved in multiple human diseases. NF-κB proteins are subject to careful regulation in the cell, and are regulated at multiple levels. A family of inhibitory proteins exist (called IκB proteins) which bind to NF-κB and cause it to be localized in the cytoplasm. In addition, advances in analysis of DNA, geographical computing and the availability of vast amounts of environmental data obtained by satellites provide new opportunities for studying ecology at different spatial and phylogenetic scales. Characterization Of Watersheds On Fort Benning Military Reservation: Comparison Of Field Data To Watershed Parameters, Melinda Rosetta Stahl

Sixteen watersheds located on Fort Benning Military Installation in Georgia were analyzed using both physically collected data and computer modeling data. Physical data collected included total suspended solids (TSS) and grain size analysis using the Wolman Pebble Count method. Computer modeling analyzed the watersheds using ArcGIS 9.3 for comparison to physical data. Land use, slope, and soil data were used in a modified revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) to create a soil erodibility index map. Wolman Pebble Count data showed that in half of the watersheds, 84% of the sampled grains were less than half a millimeter in size. …

Light-enhanced dark respiration (LEDR) has been studied in C3 plants as a method to elucidate the careful balance between photosynthesis and respiration yet little is known about the metabolic properties by which it occurs in C4 plants. Using a tunable diode laser gas exchange system, we analyzed transient isotopic shifts in leaf-respired CO2 associated with LEDR at 10Hz frequency from Populus deltoides (C3), Amaranthus hypochondriacus (C4 NAD-ME), and Zea mays (C4 NADP-ME). The results suggest that:
