Post-Ume Screening Examination In Nigerian Universities: The University Of Education, Ikere-Ekiti (Tunedik) Experience, Isaac Oluwadare Busayo

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Post-UME screening examination conducted by the University of Education, Ikere-Ekiti (TUNEDIK), particularly in essay writing, exposed inadequacies in most of the candidates. A total of 500 candidates were randomly selected for this study from five departments of the three foundation faculties of education, science and information technology and arts, social and management sciences. 200 out of the 500 candidates (40%) scored 200 marks and above in JAMB, 125 candidates (25%) scored 190-199, also 125 candidates (25%) again scored 180-189 and 50 candidates (10%) scored 170-179 in JAMB. Ironically, only 87 out of the 200 candidates (43.5%), who scored 200 …

The Use Of Impact Factor In The Appraisal Of Academic Librarians In Nigeria, Michael Onuchukwu Okoye May 2010

The Use Of Impact Factor In The Appraisal Of Academic Librarians In Nigeria, Michael Onuchukwu Okoye

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This study explores the degree to which academic librarians in Nigeria are committed to accepting the use of impact factor for assessing their academic performance. Fifty copies of a questionnaire were distributed and 41 returned. Descriptive statistics using means and percentages were used to generate data. A majority of the respondents disagreed that impact factor had wider acceptance than any alternative. More than half did not agree that many Nigerian scholars are reluctant to publish in international journals. Lapses in the provision of facilities which should facilitate high quality research are highlighted. It has become compelling on Nigerian universities to …

Water Relations And Carbon Economy Of Hemiepiphytic And Non-Hemiepiphytic Ficus Tree Species In Southwest China, Guangyou Hao May 2010

Water Relations And Carbon Economy Of Hemiepiphytic And Non-Hemiepiphytic Ficus Tree Species In Southwest China, Guangyou Hao

Open Access Dissertations

Hemiepiphytes are important components of tropical forests and are attractive to scientists due to their unique epiphytic growth habit during some period of their life cycle. Unique characteristics in plant water relations and carbon economy have been found in hemiepiphytic plants; however, to further understand this group of species on an evolutionary basis it is necessary to carry out comparative studies between hemiepiphytes and their close relatives. In this dissertation I conduced a comparative study in a suite of functional traits related to plant water relations and photosynthesis between hemiepiphytic and non-hemiepiphytic tree species from a single genus-Ficus. Great differentiation …

A Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimator Of A Causal Effect On A Bounded Continuous Outcome, Susan Gruber, Mark J. Van Der Laan May 2010

A Targeted Maximum Likelihood Estimator Of A Causal Effect On A Bounded Continuous Outcome, Susan Gruber, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Targeted maximum likelihood estimation of a parameter of a data generating distribution, known to be an element of a semiparametric model, involves constructing a parametric model through an initial density estimator with parameter epsilon representing an amount of fluctuation of the initial density estimator, where the score of this fluctuation model at epsilon=0 equals the efficient influence curve/canonical gradient. The latter constraint can be satisfied by many parametric fluctuation models, since it represents only a local constraint of its behavior at zero fluctuation. However, it is very important that the fluctuations stay within the semiparametric model for the observed data …

Super Learner In Prediction, Eric C. Polley, Mark J. Van Der Laan May 2010

Super Learner In Prediction, Eric C. Polley, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Super learning is a general loss based learning method that has been proposed and analyzed theoretically in van der Laan et al. (2007). In this article we consider super learning for prediction. The super learner is a prediction method designed to find the optimal combination of a collection of prediction algorithms. The super learner algorithm finds the combination of algorithms minimizing the cross-validated risk. The super learner framework is built on the theory of cross-validation and allows for a general class of prediction algorithms to be considered for the ensemble. Due to the previously established oracle results for the cross-validation …

You And Me Baby Ain't Nothing But Mammals: Disgust, Evolution, And The Transcendence Of An Immaterial Soul, Sara G. Gottlieb May 2010

You And Me Baby Ain't Nothing But Mammals: Disgust, Evolution, And The Transcendence Of An Immaterial Soul, Sara G. Gottlieb

Psychology Honors Projects

Materialist theories of mind are disturbing for those who endorse the idea that an immortal soul is distinct from the material body. Many argue for a uniqueness of the human spirit that transcends bodily qualities. The present research focuses on the rejection of human evolution from the perspective of disgust, which has both a physical (body) and moral (soul) component and is elicited by objects that remind us of both death and animals. Study 1 asked whether those primed to feel disgusted would show an implicit preference for creationism over evolution on an Implicit Associations Test but failed to find …

The Information Technology (IT) governance of a large wastewater treatment plant was examined with respect to the COBIT framework. The COBIT Quickstart prescription was used as the basis for a phase I current state assessment throughout this examination. Assessment tests were administered to the CIO revealing a strong need for IT governance within this domain. Following, interviews were conducted with individuals in an effort to illustrate the current state of IT governance and identify gaps. A sample of management practices from the four COBIT domains was explored. The department director, CIO and two IT department managers were interviewed and asked …

The Places Of Birth: Navigating Risk, Control, And Choice, Hannah E. Emple May 2010

The Places Of Birth: Navigating Risk, Control, And Choice, Hannah E. Emple

Geography Honors Projects

Through qualitative research in the Twin Cities, Minnesota and a literature review grounded in health and feminist geography, this paper analyzes how women, their families, and health care providers view and navigate places of birth. Over four million births occur annually in the United States, making birth the most common reason for hospitalization of women. Although 99% of women in the U.S. give birth in hospitals, a small but vocal minority seek alternative places to birth – primarily at home. Where to give birth is a contested subject infused with social and political significance. I suggest that place is highly …

Antisecretory And Analgesic Activities Of Terminalia Bellerica, Arif-Ullah Khan, Anwar Hassan Gilani May 2010

Antisecretory And Analgesic Activities Of Terminalia Bellerica, Arif-Ullah Khan, Anwar Hassan Gilani

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

This study describes the antisecretory and analgesic activities of the crude extract of Terminalia bellerica (Tb.Cr). T. bellerica extract inhibited the castor oil-induced intestinal fluid secretion in mice at the dose range of 300 - 1000 mg/kg. The extract also dose-dependently (50 - 100 mg/kg) reduced the numbers of acetic acid-mediated writhes in mice. These results indicate that T. bellerica exhibit antisecretory and anti-nociceptive effects, hence justifying its medicinal use in diarrhea and pain.

The Feminine Ideal, Rosalena L. Miller May 2010

The Feminine Ideal, Rosalena L. Miller

Scripps Senior Theses

While footwear was originally meant to protect the feet and enable the wearer to span larger distances and rough materials, today shoes are often seen as a fashion statement and a sex symbol for women. In his book, Of Cigarettes, High Heels, and Other Interesting Things, Marcel Danesi examines how high heels have moved away from the original purpose of shoes and now “seem to contravene this function. They are uncomfortable and yet millions of women wear them." They have moved from practicality to a sign of femininity, sexuality, and power.

Reforming "Hellenization" Into A Two-Way Street: The Dialectic Of Colonization Between Greeks And Sikels In Eastern Sicily, Dirk Petersen May 2010

Reforming "Hellenization" Into A Two-Way Street: The Dialectic Of Colonization Between Greeks And Sikels In Eastern Sicily, Dirk Petersen

Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects

Extensive colonization was a key feature of Greek-speaking societies of the ancient Mediterranean. Diffusion of colonizers likewise led to a diffusion of the colonized, ramifications of which pepper extant literature. Rather than acknowledging these groups’ multi-vocality, Classical scholarship traditionally discusses their relationship employing the one-sided term, “Hellenization.” Even those interested in the experiences of the colonized often employ concepts such as appropriation and assimilation in their discussions. Rejecting these approaches, this paper employs a case study of Greek colonization in eastern Sicily to seek, instead, a dialectic, a lens to account for the nuances of pluralism inherent in these interactions.

The Effects Of A Curriculum Intervention On Arkansas Students' Interests In Manufacturing As Measured By The Kuder Career Interest Assessment, Bridget Rose Shemwell May 2010

The Effects Of A Curriculum Intervention On Arkansas Students' Interests In Manufacturing As Measured By The Kuder Career Interest Assessment, Bridget Rose Shemwell

Student Theses and Dissertations

The Kuder Career Planning System administrative database results for the past five years have shown a low interest in the manufacturing career cluster among Arkansas students. The low student interest and shortage of high-skilled labor in manufacturing prompted the Arkansas Department of Career Education to invest grant funds in a new manufacturing curriculum for career orientation teachers to implement as an intervention in their classrooms. The intervention intent was to inform eighth graders about career opportunities in manufacturing and the skills necessary to compete for high-skill, high-wage, and high demand manufacturing careers in an effort to help alleviate the shortage …

Mutation Of The Vesicular Monoamine Transporter-1 Gene Alters Its Protein Product, Abena Watson-Siriboe May 2010

Mutation Of The Vesicular Monoamine Transporter-1 Gene Alters Its Protein Product, Abena Watson-Siriboe

Theses and Dissertations

The vesicular monoamine transporter 1 (VMAT1) is essential for storage of monoamines, such as epinephrine and serotonin, in secretory vesicles of neuroendocrine cells. Recently the VMAT1 protein was detected in human and mouse brain, and mutations of the VMAT1 gene at single DNA nucleotides (single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs) were associated with schizophrenia. In this study, Chinese hamster ovarian cells were stably transfected with either human VMAT1 DNA (GenBank: #NM_003053.1 or DNA with the Thr4Pro SNP, which results in a threonine to proline change in amino acid number 4 of the VMAT1 protein. Western blot analysis revealed that cells with …

Assessing Scientific Inquiry: Teacher Beliefs And Practices, Adam James Mitchell May 2010

Assessing Scientific Inquiry: Teacher Beliefs And Practices, Adam James Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Science education reform movements have long urged the use of inquiry methods in all science instruction. More recently, standards and accountability reform efforts have emphasized measuring and improving student science achievement. Researchers have questioned the alignment and balance between these reforms (Lane, 2004; Yeh, 2001). This study addresses issues faced by secondary science teachers as they simultaneously meet the goals of these reform movements. Mixed methods were used to answer the questions: 1) Can a teacher's beliefs and practices regarding inquiry teaching methods be correlated with his/her assessment practices?; 2) What item types are most commonly employed by teachers that …

Computation Intelligence Method To Find Generic Non-Coding Rna Search Models, Jennifer A. Smith May 2010

Computation Intelligence Method To Find Generic Non-Coding Rna Search Models, Jennifer A. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Fairly effective methods exist for finding new noncoding RNA genes using search models based on known families of ncRNA genes (for example covariance models). However, these models only find new members of the existing families and are not useful in finding potential members of novel ncRNA families. Other problems with family-specific search include large processing requirements, ambiguity in defining which sequences form a family and lack of sufficient numbers of known sequences to properly estimate model parameters. An ncRNA search model is proposed which includes a collection of non-overlapping RNA hairpin structure covariance models. The hairpin models are chosen from …
