The wildland-urban interface (WUI), defined as areas where human development meets undeveloped wildland (Radeloff et al. 2005), is a focal area for humanwildlife interactions in many communities of the western United States, particularly in those areas that have experienced rapid and expansive human population growth. Since 1960, conversion of rural to urban land has more than doubled in the United States (Theobald 2001). The eastern front range of the Rocky Mountains has experienced one of the most rapid urban expansions in the country, with approximately 110,000 hectares of undeveloped rural land being converted to human-developed land every year between 1992 …

On The Bandstructure Velocity And Ballistic Current Of Ultra-Narrow Silicon Nanowire Transistors As A Function Of Cross Section Size, Orientation, And Bias, Neophytos Neophytou, Sung-Geun Kim, Gerhard Klimeck, Hans Kosina
Birck and NCN Publications
A 20 band sp(3)d(5)s* spin-orbit-coupled, semiempirical, atomistic tight-binding model is used with a semiclassical, ballistic field-effect-transistor model, to theoretically examine the bandstructure carrier velocity and ballistic current in silicon nanowire (NW) transistors. Infinitely long, uniform, cylindrical, and rectangular NWs, of cross sectional diameters/sides ranging from 3-12 nm are considered. For a comprehensive analysis, n-type and p-type metal-oxide semiconductor (NMOS and PMOS) NWs in [100], [110], and [111] transport orientations are examined. In general, physical cross section reduction increases velocities, either by lifting the heavy mass valleys or significantly changing the curvature of the bands. The carrier velocities of PMOS [110] …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
The learning society has currently transformed from ‘wired society’ to become ‘mobile society’ which is facilitated by wireless network. To suit to this new paradigm, mlearning was given birth and rapidly building its prospect to be included in the future curriculum. Research and studies on mlearning spruced up in numerous aspects but there is still scarcity in studies on curriculum design of m-learning. This study is a part of an ongoing bigger study probing into the m-learning curriculum for secondary schools. The paper reports on the first phase of the study which aims to probe into the needs of curriculum …

Sexual Selection And Plumage In The Polymorphic White-Throated Sparrow, Nathan Rathbun
Sexual Selection And Plumage In The Polymorphic White-Throated Sparrow, Nathan Rathbun
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Feather coloration has been known to be connected with sexual selection for many years. It also provides an opportunity to study evolution, focusing on sexual selection and natural selection. Plumage is affected by both of these forces and the equilibrium is where these forces balance. The white-throated sparrow gives us a unique opportunity to observe the effects of the different strengths of these forces within a species. First, I established that there were differences in plumage characteristics between the morphs and sexes. White males had the brightest white and darkest black feathers. White females and tan males were the next …

Data provenance graphs are form of metadata that can be used to establish a variety of properties of data products that undergo sequences of transformations, typically specified as workflows. Their usefulness for answering user provenance queries is limited, however, unless the graphs are enhanced with domain-specific annotations. In this paper we propose a model and architecture for semantic, domain-aware provenance, and demonstrate its usefulness in answering typical user queries. Furthermore, we discuss the additional benefits and the technical implications of publishing provenance graphs as a form of Linked Data. A prototype implementation of the model is available for data produced …

Physics Faculty Publications
The electrical resistivity values for a series of pure and doped (Co, Mn, Al) ZnO epitaxial films grown by pulsed laser deposition were measured with equipment designed for determining the direct current resistivity of high resistance samples. Room-temperature resistances ranging from 7 x 10(1) to 4 x 10(8) Omega/sq were measured on vacuum-reduced cobalt-doped ZnO, (Al,Co) co-doped ZnO, pure cobalt-doped ZnO, Mn-doped ZnO, and undoped ZnO. Using a four-point collinear geometry with gold spring-loaded contacts, resistivities were measured from 295 to 5 K for resistances of < approximately 10(12) Omega/sq. In addition, magnetoresistance and Hall effect were measured as a function of temperature for select samples. Throughout the investigation, samples were also measured on commercially available instrumentation with good agreement. The challenges of transport measurements on high resistivity samples are discussed, along with some offered solutions to those challenges.

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Aroma and cooked kernel elongation are the most important quality traits of aromatic rice, which differentiate the highly valued aromatic rice from the other rice types. Previous studies on genetic analysis have shown that genes/QTLs for these two traits are linked. In the present study, it tried to evaluate the expression of aroma, kernel elongation and their association in 55 fine rice genotypes in the tropical environment of Malaysia. Highest percentage of elongation ratio was observed in Genotype E2 followed by E11, Gharib, E6, E26, E34, E35, E36, E19, E20 and E27. Aroma was observed in 34 rice genotypes and …

"Willful Patent Filing": A Criminal Procedure Protecting Traditional Knowledge, Vincent M. Smoczynski
Chicago-Kent Law Review
This article explores the interaction between current intellectual property regimes and traditional knowledge and concludes that national laws currently in place inadequately protect traditional knowledge holders. When property rights are granted on traditional knowledge, the effects can extend not only to the indigenous communities, but to the surrounding ecosystems and the global market. Commercialization and increased demand leads to shortages in natural resources and increased prices. Therefore, in order to ensure that patent applicants are deterred from acquiring property rights in traditional knowledge, as well that traditional knowledge holders receive proper benefits for their labor and knowledge, this article advocates …

Parenting And Money Making: Sex Work And Women’S Choices In Urban Uganda, Janet Seeley, Sarah Nakamanya, Heiner Grosskurth, Flavia Zalwango
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
Based upon detailed life histories of 100 Ugandan sex workers, this article documents women’s pathways into prostitution through marital separation and the need to support children via rural-urban migration to obtain wage work in Kampala. The money women got selling sex, and from other jobs they did, helped some to independently pay for their children’s school fees, their house rent and manage to feed their family without receiving support from partners. In their narratives women portrayed themselves as mothers, wives, partners, friends and workers with self-esteem and the hope of improvement in their lives through their own efforts.
Interactive Kinds, Muhammad Ali Khalidi
Interactive Kinds, Muhammad Ali Khalidi
Publications and Research
This paper examines the phenomenon of 'interactive kinds' first identified by Ian Hacking. An interactive kind is one that is created or significantly modified once a concept of it has been formulated and acted upon in certain ways. Interactive kinds may also 'loop back' to influence our concepts and classifications. According to Hacking, interactive kinds are found exclusively in the human domain. After providing a general account of interactive kinds and outlining their philosophical significance, I argue that they are not confined to the human realm, but that they can also occur elsewhere. Hence, I conclude by arguing that interactive …

Forecasting Consumer Satisfaction For Vehicle Ride Using The Mahalanobis-Taguchi Gram-Schmidt Technique, Elizabeth A. Cudney, Kenneth Ragsdell, Kioumars Paryani
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Consumers assess and perceive quality and performance at the vehicle level, but important cost-effective decisions at the sub-system or component level must be made by the producer in order to economically satisfy consumer needs by providing affordable products. Consumers evaluate vehicle attributes such as ride, handling, roominess, braking, and acceleration. These vehicle level attributes are influenced by factors at all levels of the vehicle architecture, and these factors are often correlated. the goal of this research is to efficiently forecast consumer satisfaction measured as a function of available vehicle level performance data. This article presents the application of the Mahalanobis-Taguchi …
Synthesis Of Pegylated Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes By A Photoinitiated Graft From Polymerization, Pu Zhang, David B. Henthorn
Synthesis Of Pegylated Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes By A Photoinitiated Graft From Polymerization, Pu Zhang, David B. Henthorn
Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A considerable amount of research has been devoted to carbon nanotubes because of their unique electrical, mechanical, optical, and chemical properties. Here, in this report, we introduce a novel, simple ultraviolet initiated "graft from" polymerization method to synthesize PEGylated carbon nanotubes. This grafting procedure significantly enhanced nanotube aqueous dispersibility and long-term stability in solution. Mass of grafted polymer chains was easily modulated by adjusting polymerization reaction time, and nanomaterials containing up to 80% polymer by weight were synthesized. Nanotube morphology was characterized by SEM, TEM before and after the functionalization. in addition, the covalent bonding of polymer chains to the …
Phase Transitions Of The Generalized Contact Process With Two Absorbing States, Man Young Lee, Thomas Vojta
Phase Transitions Of The Generalized Contact Process With Two Absorbing States, Man Young Lee, Thomas Vojta
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We investigate the generalized contact process with two absorbing states in one space dimension by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. Treating the creation rate of active sites between inactive domains as an independent parameter leads to a rich phase diagram. In addition to the conventional active and inactive phases we find a parameter region where the simple contact process is inactive, but an infinitesimal creation rate at the boundary between inactive domains is sufficient to take the system into the active phase. Thus, the generalized contact process has two different phase transition lines. The point separating them shares some …

Dielectrophoretic Separation Of Mouse Melanoma Clones, Ahmet C. Sabuncu, Jie A. Liu, Stephen J. Beebe, Ali Beskok
Bioelectrics Publications
Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is employed to differentiate clones of mouse melanoma B16F10 cells. Five clones were tested on microelectrodes. At a specific excitation frequency, clone 1 showed a different DEP response than the other four. Growth rate, melanin content, recovery from cryopreservation, and in vitro invasive studies were performed. Clone 1 is shown to have significantly different melanin content and recovery rate from cryopreservation. This paper reports the ability of DEP to differentiate between two malignant cells of the same origin. Different DEP responses of the two clones could be linked to their melanin content.

Taxonomy, Biogeography And Pest Status Of Marmara Sp. In Northern Mexico And California Citrus Production, Paul Semet
Master's Theses
A novel lepidopteran sex pheromone lure which was thought to be species-specific to the citrus pest Marmara gulosa (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) Guillén (McElfresh et al. 2009) has attracted male moths exhibiting two distinct morphologies. The morphological features examined were the sclerotized parts that make up the male genitalia; which include the valvular lobes, costal lobes, cucullar lobes, and the aedeagus. The sclerotized parts were methodically dissected and mounted on microscope slides. Digital images captured of the slide-mounted specimens proved to be inconsistent with the illustrations provided in the original Marmara gulosa species description (Guillén et al. 2001).
The morphologies of all …
