Future Management Of The Metropolitan Recreational Roe's Abalone Fishery., Metropolitan Roe's Abalone Recreational Fishery Working Group.
Fisheries Management Papers
Following the setting of a 40 tonne Total Allowable Recreational Catch (TARC) for the Perth recreational abalone fishery, a working group was formed to examine future management options.
The Metropolitan Roe’s Abalone Recreational Fishery Working Group (“the Working Group”) examined historical management, key principles, amenity of fishing, bag limits, license numbers, season length and timing of the season to assist its deliberations. A questionnaire was also sent out to 1,000 abalone recreational licence holders, with 20 per cent of licensees providing a detailed response.

Unmasking Whiteness: A Framework For Understanding Inclusive Leadership At A Predominately White Institution, Nicole Marie Latino
Unmasking Whiteness: A Framework For Understanding Inclusive Leadership At A Predominately White Institution, Nicole Marie Latino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study explored the personal journey of 11 White college administrators who were identified as inclusive leaders at a predominately White institution (PWI), recognized nationally for its work on partnering diversity and excellence. One overall question guided this study: How do White college administrators describe their journey to becoming successful inclusive leaders at a predominately White institution? This question was explored from the perspective of critical race theory (CRT), that is, inclusive leadership for White administrators could be achieved by intentionally examining their construction of Whiteness and their personal racial identity.
Narrative inquiry was used to co-construct a developmental framework …

Alpha-Synuclein Delays Endoplasmic Reticulum (Er)-To-Golgi Transport In Mammalian Cells By Antagonizing Er/Golgi Snares, Nandhakumar Thayanidhi, Jared R. Helm, Deborah C. Nycz, Marbin Bentley, Yingjian Liang, Jesse C. Hay
Alpha-Synuclein Delays Endoplasmic Reticulum (Er)-To-Golgi Transport In Mammalian Cells By Antagonizing Er/Golgi Snares, Nandhakumar Thayanidhi, Jared R. Helm, Deborah C. Nycz, Marbin Bentley, Yingjian Liang, Jesse C. Hay
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Toxicity of human alpha-synuclein when expressed in simple organisms can be suppressed by overexpression of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-to-Golgi transport machinery, suggesting that inhibition of constitutive secretion represents a fundamental cause of the toxicity. Whether similar inhibition in mammals represents a cause of familial Parkinson's disease has not been established. We tested elements of this hypothesis by expressing human alpha-synuclein in mammalian kidney and neuroendocrine cells and assessing ER-to-Golgi transport. Overexpression of wild type or the familial disease-associated A53T mutant alpha-synuclein delayed transport by up to 50%; however, A53T inhibited more potently. The secretory delay occurred at low expression levels and …
Development Of A Men's Depression Inventory, Andrew Fields
Development Of A Men's Depression Inventory, Andrew Fields
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper details the development of a scale to more accurately assess depression in men. It first summarizes the literature on depression, depression assessment, and current research on men and masculinity. It is argued that current conceptualizations of both depression and masculinity influence prevalence studies, which consistently find that men experience depression half as often as women. It is argued that an assessment measure that accounts for masculine variants of depression (substance use, anger, withdrawal, and emotional restriction) may identify more frequent depression in men than previously expected. Next, the paper details the development of a men's depression scale using …
Ethical Elitism: A Burkean Analysis Of The Rhetorical Construction Of A Moral Persona In The First Term Of President George W. Bush, Veronica Lynn Koehn
Ethical Elitism: A Burkean Analysis Of The Rhetorical Construction Of A Moral Persona In The First Term Of President George W. Bush, Veronica Lynn Koehn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
On November 4, 2004, President George W. Bush won re-election. According to exit polls, a majority of people who voted for Bush over his opponent, Senator John Kerry, did so because they believed that Bush was the “moral values” candidate. In this dissertation, I assess the moral persona that the President rhetorically constructed during his first term in office. To do so, I utilize Kenneth Burke‟s cluster and pentad tools to analyze Bush‟s statements on embryonic stem cell research, 9/11 and the ensuing War on Terror, and same-sex marriage, three issues that the elite press explicitly identified as being “moral …
Biology And Pathology Of Rho Gtpase, Pi-3 Kinase-Akt, And Map Kinase Signaling Pathways In Chondrocytes, Frank Beier, Richard F. Loeser
Biology And Pathology Of Rho Gtpase, Pi-3 Kinase-Akt, And Map Kinase Signaling Pathways In Chondrocytes, Frank Beier, Richard F. Loeser
Paediatrics Publications
Chondrocytes provide the framework for the developing skeleton and regulate long-bone growth through the activity of the growth plate. Chondrocytes in the articular cartilage, found at the ends of bones in diarthroidial joints, are responsible for maintenance of the tissue through synthesis and degradation of the extracellular matrix. The processes of growth, differentiation, cell death and matrix remodeling are regulated by a network of cell signaling pathways in response to a variety of extracellular stimuli. These stimuli consist of soluble ligands, including growth factors and cytokines, extracellular matrix proteins, and mechanical factors that act in concert to regulate chondrocyte function …

Review: Michael C. Carhart, The Science Of Culture In Enlightenment Germany, Andre Wakefield
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
This is a book review of The Science of Culture in Enlightenment Germany, by Michael C. Carhart. It is an entertaining book. Its chapters are organized around a series of vignettes: Carsten Niebuhr on camelback negotiating with his Bedouin guides; feral French children skinning rabbits with their bare hands; English gentlemen in Syrian deserts; Captian Cooks lieutenants carving "steaks" from teh severed heads of war victims. In case you've lost your bearings, let me assure you that The Science of Culture in Enlightenment Germany is indeed about Enlightenment Germany. But as the structure of the chapters suggests, Michael Carhart …

After many revisions, the Planning Board formally adopted the approved stormwater management provisions into the town site plan and subdivision regulations …
Antibiotic Administration Alters The Community Structure Of The Gastrointestinal Micobiota, Courtney Robinson, Vincent Young
Antibiotic Administration Alters The Community Structure Of The Gastrointestinal Micobiota, Courtney Robinson, Vincent Young
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
We recently demonstrated that antibiotic administration has a reproducible effect on the community structure of the indigenous gastrointestinal microbiota of mice. In this addendum we report on additional experimentation using the antibiotic vancomycin. In accord with our previous findings, vancomycin administration results in consistent alteration of the microbiota of the cecal contents and the cecal mucosa. These alterations are largely reversed by a three-week period of recovery without antibiotics. In contrast to our previous results using other antibiotics, the alterations in community structure associated with vancomycin occured without a significant decrease in the overall bacterial biomass. These results indicate that …

Genetic Differentiation Between Western And Eastern (Eschrichtius Robustus) Gray Whale Populations Using Microsatellite Markers, Aimee R. Lang, David W. Weller, Richard G. Leduc, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Within the North Pacific, gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus) are recognized as distinct eastern and western populations. Although both populations were severely reduced by whaling, the eastern population is generally considered to have recovered while the western population has remained highly depleted. Previous studies have documented genetic differentiation between the two populations on the basis of mtDNA haplotype frequencies. Since mtDNA represents only maternal inheritance patterns, the present study used bi-parentally inherited microsatellite markers (n=13) to measure differentiation between populations as well as to compare levels of nuclear genetic diversity retained in each. Mean levels of genetic diversity, as …

Comparing Observations Of Age At First Reproduction In Western Gray Whales To Estimates Of Age At Sexual Maturity In Eastern Gray Whales, Amanda L. Bradford, David W. Weller, Aimée R. Lang, Grigory A. Tsidulko, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr.
United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications
Age at first reproduction (AFR) is a basic component of age-structured whale assessment models, but direct estimates of this parameter do not exist for either the abundant eastern or critically endangered western population of gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus). Instead, assessments of both populations have utilized either of two recognized estimates of eastern gray whale age at sexual maturity (ASM) that are adjusted by a year to account for fetal gestation. These ASM estimates are: 1) 9 years median, 6-12 years range, and 2) 6 years median, 5-9 years range, but there are biases and discrepancies associated with these …

On The Ph-Optimum Of Activity And Stability Of Proteins, Kemper Tally, Emil Alexov
On The Ph-Optimum Of Activity And Stability Of Proteins, Kemper Tally, Emil Alexov
Publications
Biological macromolecules evolved to perform their function in specific cellular environment (subcellular compartments or tissues); therefore, they should be adapted to the biophysical characteristics of the corresponding environment, one of them being the characteristic pH. Many macromolecular properties are pH dependent, such as activity and stability. However, only activity is biologically important, while stability may not be crucial for the corresponding reaction. Here, we show that the pH-optimum of activity (the pH of maximal activity) is correlated with the pH-optimum of stability (the pH of maximal stability) on a set of 310 proteins with available experimental data. We speculate that …
A Place Called Pahaku, Paul A. Johnsgard
A Place Called Pahaku, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
There is an area in eastern Nebraska where the Platte River, after flowing northeastwardly from the vicinity of Kearney for nearly 150 miles, enters the glacial drift bordering the Missouri Valley and turns directly east. Over its eastward course of about 50 miles, the river forms a shallow and wide sandy channel that is bounded to the south by forested bluffs and to the north by a wide wooded floodplain. One of these glacially shaped and loess-capped bluffs was known historically to the resident Pawnee tribe as Pahaku (usually but incorrectly spelled as Pahuk) Hill. This Pawnee word may be …

The major chemical parameters, TOC and natural fluorescence of Yedra spring, Malaga province, southern Spain were monitored from April 2008 to March2009. The electrical conductivity and the concentrations of most major ions decreased following recharge periods. The TOC and NO3–, representing tracers from the soil that infiltrate throughthe unsaturated zone, were found to vary inversely withthe Mg2+ content, whichis a natural indicator of groundwater residence time. Furthermore, a strong, direct relation was found between TOC and the natural fluorescence associated withhumic and fulvic acids. Bothparameters respond similarly to rainfall events, exhibiting significant increases during recharge followed by reductions during recession. …

The Doha Development Agenda (Doha Round) of multilateral trade negotiations at the World Trade Organization (WTO) may fail unless a solution to the establishment of a multilateral register for geographical indications on wines and spirits (GIs) foreseen in the TRIPS Agreement is found Failure of the Doha Round would entail serious intended and unintended consequences for the world trading system. Europe's insistence on a Doha deal on GIs is now accompanied by demands from several developing countries for an extension of GI protection to products other than wines and spirits. Those demanders consider the current emphasis on alcoholic beverages to …
