Mediators Of The Association Between Risk For Mania And Close Relationship Quality In Adolescents, Rebecca S. Siegel Jun 2010

Mediators Of The Association Between Risk For Mania And Close Relationship Quality In Adolescents, Rebecca S. Siegel

Open Access Dissertations

Bipolar disorder is an extremely devastating illness, and increasingly robust evidence indicates that it emerges during adolescence. Also during adolescence, peer relationships, particularly close friendships and romantic relationships, become a central mechanism for social maturation and emotional development. The consequences of mania on the development of peer relationships have received little attention. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to examine the association between mania and close peer relationship quality in a community sample of adolescents. Two types of close peer relationships, close friendships and romantic relationships, were evaluated. In addition, the current study examined two potential mediators of …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

We developed components of a decision structure that could be used in an adaptive management framework for responding to invasion of hemlock woolly adelgid Adeleges tsugae on the Cumberland Plateau of northern Tennessee. Hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive forest pest, was first detected in this area in 2007. We used a structured decision-making process to identify and refine the management problem, objectives, and alternative management actions, and to assess consequences and tradeoffs among selected management alternatives. We identified four fundamental objectives: 1) conserve the aquatic and terrestrial riparian conservation targets, 2) protect and preserve hemlock, 3) develop and maintain adequate …

Gis Applications For Coal Mine Subsidence In The State Of Colorado, Charles J. Strickler Jun 2010

Gis Applications For Coal Mine Subsidence In The State Of Colorado, Charles J. Strickler

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

The state of Colorado has an extensive history of subsurface coal mining. Due to the widespread extraction of coal, numerous subsidence events have occurred, causing both costly and potentially dangerous conditions. The two most common types of underground coal mines in Colorado are slope and shaft mines, which are prone to roof collapse that can propagate to the surface in the form of sinkholes and troughs. Sinkholes and troughs can occur over prolonged periods of time or as instantaneous events, which may leave landowners little reaction time and expensive repairs. As of January 2010, no spatial database existed that covered …

Infrageneric Relationships Within Collomia (Polemoniaceae), Eric Stewart Green Jun 2010

Infrageneric Relationships Within Collomia (Polemoniaceae), Eric Stewart Green

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional evolutionary models depict evolution as a bifurcating pattern with a single ancestor diverging to form two lineages. However, reticulate species resulting from hybridization and recombination have unique histories shared with two independent lineages, not one. Accounting for the genetic histories of reticulate species increases the power and ability to recover biologically meaningful relationships. The genus Collomia (Polemoniaceae) is used to explore issues of reticulation and the importance of accounting for gene histories in a phylogenetic analysis. The issue of reticulation within species trees is discussed with a multilabeled, network approach being explored to better represent the genus's evolutionary history. …

An Iterative Feature Perturbation Method For Gene Selection From Microarray Data, Juana Canul Reich Jun 2010

An Iterative Feature Perturbation Method For Gene Selection From Microarray Data, Juana Canul Reich

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Gene expression microarray datasets often consist of a limited number of samples relative to a large number of expression measurements, usually on the order of thousands of genes. These characteristics pose a challenge to any classification model as they might negatively impact its prediction accuracy. Therefore, dimensionality reduction is a core process prior to any classification task.

This dissertation introduces the iterative feature perturbation method (IFP), an embedded gene selector that iteratively discards non-relevant features. IFP considers relevant features as those which after perturbation with noise cause a change in the predictive accuracy of the classification model. Non-relevant features do …

The Climatic Niche Diversity Of Malagasy Primates: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Jason M. Kamilar, Kathleen M. Muldoon Jun 2010

The Climatic Niche Diversity Of Malagasy Primates: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Jason M. Kamilar, Kathleen M. Muldoon

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Numerous researchers have posited that there should be a strong negative relationship between the evolutionary distance among species and their ecological similarity. Alternative evidence suggests that members of adaptive radiations should display no relationship between divergence time and ecological similarity because rapid evolution results in near-simultaneous speciation early in the clade's history. In this paper, we performed the first investigation of ecological diversity in a phylogenetic context using a mammalian adaptive radiation, the Malagasy primates.

Methodology/Principal Findings:

We collected data for 43 extant species including: 1) 1064 species by locality samples, 2) GIS climate data for each sampling locality, …

Investigation Of The Sources And Sinks Of Atmospheric Methane, Christopher Lee Butenhoff Jun 2010

Investigation Of The Sources And Sinks Of Atmospheric Methane, Christopher Lee Butenhoff

Dissertations and Theses

The work presented here represents a number of independent studies that investigated various components of the CH4 budget, namely the sources and sinks. We used a chemical-tracer model and created unique long-term time series of atmospheric CH4, carbon monoxide (CO), molecular hydrogen (H2), and methylchloroform (CH3CCl3) measurements at marine background air to derive histories of atmospheric hydroxyl radical (OH) - the main chemical oxidant of CH4, biomass burning - an important source of CH4 in the tropics, and emissions of CH4 from rice paddies - one of …

Comparative Mitogenomics Of Braconidae (Insecta: Hymenoptera) And The Phylogenetic Utility Of Mitochondrial Genomes With Special Reference To Holometabolous Insects, Shu-Jun Wei, Min Shi, Michael J. Sharkey, Cornelis Van Achterberg, Xue-Xin Chen

Entomology Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Animal mitochondrial genomes are potential models for molecular evolution and markers for phylogenetic and population studies. Previous research has shown interesting features in hymenopteran mitochondrial genomes. Here, we conducted a comparative study of mitochondrial genomes of the family Braconidae, one of the largest families of Hymenoptera, and assessed the utility of mitochondrial genomic data for phylogenetic inference at three different hierarchical levels, i.e., Braconidae, Hymenoptera, and Holometabola.

RESULTS: Seven mitochondrial genomes from seven subfamilies of Braconidae were sequenced. Three of the four sequenced A+T-rich regions are shown to be inverted. Furthermore, all species showed reversal of strand asymmetry, suggesting …

Van Der Waals-London Dispersion Interaction Framework For Experimentally Realistic Carbon Nanotube Systems, Roger H. French Jun 2010

Van Der Waals-London Dispersion Interaction Framework For Experimentally Realistic Carbon Nanotube Systems, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

A system's van der Waals–London dispersion interactions are often ignored, poorly understood, or crudely approximated, despite their importance in determining the intrinsic properties and intermolecular forces present in a given system. There are several key barriers that contribute to this issue: 1) lack of the required full spectral optical properties, 2) lack of the proper geometrical formulation to give meaningful results, and 3) a perception that a full van der Waals–London dispersion calculation is somehow unwieldy or difficult to understand conceptually. However, the physical origin of the fundamental interactions for carbon nanotube systems can now be readily understood due to …

Long Range Interactions In Nanoscale Science, Roger H. French Jun 2010

Long Range Interactions In Nanoscale Science, Roger H. French

Faculty Scholarship

Our understanding of the “long range” electrodynamic, electrostatic, and polar interactions that dominate the organization of small objects at separations beyond an interatomic bond length is reviewed. From this basic-forces perspective, a large number of systems are described from which one can learn about these organizing forces and how to modulate them. The many practical systems that harness these nanoscale forces are then surveyed. The survey reveals not only the promise of new devices and materials, but also the possibility of designing them more effectively.

Exotoxins, including the hemolysins known as the alpha (α) and beta (β) toxins, play an important role in the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus infections. A random transposon library was screened for S. aureus mutants exhibiting altered hemolysin expression compared to wild type. Transposon insertions in 72 genes resulting in increased or decreased hemolysin expression were identified. Mutations inactivating a putative cyclic di-GMP synthetase and a serine/threonine phosphatase (Stp1) were found to reduce hemolysin expression, and mutations in genes encoding a two component regulator PhoR, LysR family transcriptional regulator, purine biosynthetic enzymes and a serine/threonine kinase (Stk1) increased expression. Transcription of …

Troglitazone Stimulates Beta-Arrestin-Dependent Cardiomyocyte Contractility Via The Angiotensin Ii Type 1a Receptor., Douglas G G. Tilley, Anny D. Nguyen, Howard A. Rockman

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR gamma) agonists are commonly used to treat cardiovascular diseases, and are reported to have several effects on cardiovascular function that may be due to PPAR gamma-independent signaling events. Select angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) interact with and modulate PPAR gamma activity, thus we hypothesized that a PPAR gamma agonist may exert physiologic effects via the angiotensin II type 1(A) receptor (AT1(A)R). In AT1(A)R-overexpressing HEK 293 cells, both angiotensin II (Ang II) and the PPAR gamma agonist troglitazone (Trog) enhanced AT1(A)R internalization and recruitment of endogenous beta-arrestin 1/2 (beta arr1/2) to the AT1(A)R. A fluorescence assay to …

A Full-Range, Multi-Variable, Cfd-Based Methodology To Identify Abnormal Near-Wall Hemodynamics In A Stented Coronary Artery, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle Jun 2010

A Full-Range, Multi-Variable, Cfd-Based Methodology To Identify Abnormal Near-Wall Hemodynamics In A Stented Coronary Artery, Jonathan Murphy, Fergal Boyle

Articles

The benefit of coronary stent implantation is reduced by excessive intimal hyperplasia which re-narrows the artery and the prevention of which is still a primary concern for clinicians. Abnormal hemodynamics create non-physiological viscous stress on the artery wall, one of the root causes of intimal hyperplasia following stent implantation. A methodology to comprehensively evaluate the viscous stress on the artery wall following stent implantation would be useful to evaluate a stent’s hemodynamic performance. The proposed methodology employs 3D computational fluid dynamics, the variables wall shear stress (WSS), WSS gradient (WSSG), WSS angle gradient (WSSAG) and a statistical analysis to evaluate …

The Effects Of Bfgf Treatment In The Aged Brain Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Michael Zeigler Jun 2010

The Effects Of Bfgf Treatment In The Aged Brain Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Michael Zeigler

Theses and Dissertations

The mature mammalian brain continually generates new neurons in the subventricular zone and hippocampus throughout life. Adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus is associated with hippocampal-dependent learning and memory function. During aging, this endogenous neurogenic potential is reduced which is accompanied by decreased cognitive function seen in the aging population. We have previously found that the injured adult brain shows heightened levels of endogenous neurogenesis and this response is associated with innate cognitive recovery. We have also found that basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), a potent neurotrophic polypeptide, can enhance injury-induced hippocampal neurogenesis and improve cognitive recovery following TBI. In this …

Constructed Wetland/Filter Basin System As A Prospective Pre-Treatment Option For Aquifer Storage And Recovery And A Potential Remedy For Elevated Arsenic, Olesya Lazareva

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The efficiency to improve the water quality of industrial and municipal wastewater in a constructed wetland/filter basin treatment system was investigated. The wetland system was constructed in a closed phosphate mine used for clay settling and sand tailings in Polk County, Florida. During 18-months of monitoring the chemical/microbiological composition of treated wetland water remained relatively constant, despite significant seasonal variations in temperature, rainfall and humidity. The following changes in water quality between input and output were observed: substantial decrease of water temperature (up to 10°C), reduction of As, SO4, F, Cl, NO3, NO2, Br, …

Estuarine Nitrifiers: New Players, Patterns And Processes, Anne E. Bernhard, Annette Bollmann Jun 2010

Estuarine Nitrifiers: New Players, Patterns And Processes, Anne E. Bernhard, Annette Bollmann

Biology Faculty Publications

Ever since the first descriptions of ammonia-oxidizing Bacteria by Winogradsky in the late 1800s, the metabolic capability of aerobic ammonia oxidation has been restricted to a phylogenetically narrow group of bacteria. However, the recent discovery of ammonia-oxidizing Archaea has forced microbiologists and ecologists to re-evaluate long-held paradigms and the role of niche partitioning between bacterial and archaeal ammonia oxidizers. Much of the current research has been conducted in open ocean or terrestrial systems, where community patterns of archaeal and bacterial ammonia oxidizers are highly congruent. Studies of archaeal and bacterial ammonia oxidizers in estuarine systems, however, present a very different …
