Building A 'Data Repository' For Heterogenous Technical Research Communities Through Collaborations, Jeroen Rombouts, Alenka Princic Jun 2010

Building A 'Data Repository' For Heterogenous Technical Research Communities Through Collaborations, Jeroen Rombouts, Alenka Princic

International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference

The paper describes the project ‘3TU.Datacentrum’, an initiative of the libraries of the three Dutch Technical Universities. Its aim is to build a data curation facility for the improvement of data management, providing data curation services for data producers of the Technical Universities and enabling data reuse.

The libraries initiated this project in their function as information- and knowledge brokers in emerging e-science. Playing a role in the management of research data offers an opportunity to get more thoroughly involved in the scientific process and to interconnect research data with all other sources managed by the libraries.

The project builds …

Datastar: A Data Staging Repository To Support The Sharing And Publication Of Research Data, Gail Steinhart

International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference

The opportunities for new discoveries made possible by the widespread availability of large amounts of data are much in the news, as are the challenges associated with sharing research data and preserving it for the long term. Cornell University Library is engaged in a pilot project (funded by the National Science Foundation) to test the feasibility of a local “staging” repository to support data sharing among research collaborators while research is in progress, and to provide tools and support to publish data to permanent disciplinary or institutional repositories. DataStaR (short for “Data Staging Repository”) aims to leverage local support and …

Library Applications, Collaborations, And Courses For Geodata And Geoinformatics, C. C. Miller Jun 2010

Library Applications, Collaborations, And Courses For Geodata And Geoinformatics, C. C. Miller

International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference

This paper will overview several library GIS and geoinformatics projects, collaborations, and initiatives at Purdue that, taken together, formulate a reasonable plan of attack for geolibrarians interested in tackling some (not all) of the issues rolled up into e-geoscience and geoinformatics. Included as examples are a metadata harvesting/catalog project, collaborations with domain faculty, courses developed and taught, and e-data efforts. From this handful of examples an argument will be made that aggressive and efficient individual geolibrarians can impact and indeed steer geoinformatics and interdisciplinary research efforts project by project, then campus by campus, and simultaneously develop and evolve their library …

Ultrasound Transient Shear Wave Elasticity Imaging For Tendon Tissue, Pengfei Song Jun 2010

Ultrasound Transient Shear Wave Elasticity Imaging For Tendon Tissue, Pengfei Song

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Degeneration of tendon tissue is a common cause of tendon dysfunction with the symptoms of repeated episodes of pain and palpable increase of tendon thickness. Tendon mechanical properties are directly related to its physiological composition and the structural organization of the interior collagen fibers which could be altered by tendon degeneration due to overuse or injury. Thus, measuring mechanical properties of tendon tissue may represent a quantitative measurement of pain, reduced function, and tissue health. Ultrasound elasticity imaging has been developed in the last two decades and has proved to be a promising tool for tissue elasticity imaging. To date, …

Expression Of Human Serum Albumin Insulin In Plastids (Cip2), Henry Daniell, Myung Ok Byung, Seung-Bum Lee

UCF Patents

Transgenic chloroplast technology could provide a viable solution to the production of Insulin-like Growth Factor I (IGF-I), Human Serum Albumin (HSA), or interferons (IFN) because of hyper-expression capabilities, ability to fold and process eukaryotic proteins with disulfide bridges (thereby eliminating the need for expensive post-purification processing). Tobacco is an ideal choice because of its large biomass, ease of scale-up (million seeds per plant), genetic manipulation and impending need to explore alternate uses for this hazardous crop. Therefore, all three human proteins will be expressed as follows: a) Develop recombinant DNA vectors for enhanced expression via tobacco chloroplast genomes b) generate …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Glioblastomas are characterized by rapid cell growth, aggressive CNS infiltration, and are resistant to all known anticancer regimens. Recent studies indicate that fibrates and statins possess anticancer potential. Fenofibrate is a potent agonist of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha (PPARalpha) that can switch energy metabolism from glycolysis to fatty acid beta-oxidation, and has low systemic toxicity. Fenofibrate also attenuates IGF-I-mediated cellular responses, which could be relevant in the process of glioblastoma cell dispersal. METHODS: The effects of fenofibrate on Glioma cell motility, IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR) signaling, PPARalpha activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, mitochondrial potential, and ATP production were …

Surface And Hyporheic Transient Storage Dynamics Throughout A Coastal Stream Network, Martin A. Briggs, Michael N. Gooseff, Bruce J. Peterson, Kate Morkeski, Wilfred M. Wollheim, Charles S. Hopkinson Jun 2010

Surface And Hyporheic Transient Storage Dynamics Throughout A Coastal Stream Network, Martin A. Briggs, Michael N. Gooseff, Bruce J. Peterson, Kate Morkeski, Wilfred M. Wollheim, Charles S. Hopkinson

Faculty Publications

Transient storage of stream water and associated solutes is expected to vary along stream networks in response to related changes in stream hydraulic conditions and morphologic gradients. These spatial changes are relevant to a wide variety of processes (e.g., biogeochemical cycling), yet data regarding these dynamics are limited and almost exclusively confined to the general storage terms of transient storage models with a single‐storage zone (1‐SZ). We used a transient storage model with two‐storage zones (2‐SZ) to simulate field data from conservative solute injections conducted in a coastal stream network in Massachusetts to separately quantify surface transient storage (STS) and …

Theses and Dissertations

This study sought to determine perceptions of former English Language Center (ELC) students of their readiness for university reading tasks after completing their ESL training. Former ELC students who now study or have studied at 10 different American post-secondary institutions provided insights for the study. Through questionnaires and face-to-face interviews, the study collected and analyzed many interesting and revealing comments from participants. Their comments demonstrated that even though the majority of students overall were satisfied with their learning experiences at the ELC, some significant changes still have to be made to be able to fully meet students' educational needs. Participants …

Targeting Complex Cyclic Peptides For Synthesis: The Celogentin And Theonellamide Families, Joshua Wayne Robinson Jun 2010

Targeting Complex Cyclic Peptides For Synthesis: The Celogentin And Theonellamide Families, Joshua Wayne Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

Celogentin C and theonellamide F are a class of natural products that have potential antimitotic behavior. They both contain interesting bicyclic structures with unusual linkages within a central moiety. Celogentin C's highly functionalized tryptophan moiety has two unusual linkages, a β-substituted Leu connection to the C6 of the indole structure that makes up the left-hand ring, and a τ-N connection of the imidazole to the C2 of the indole constructing the right-hand ring. This right-hand ring connection was solved via a novel oxidative coupling procedure developed in our group and the left-hand ring was initially constructed via a radical conjugated …

Data Mining, Data Fusion, And Libraries, Katherine Chiang Jun 2010

Data Mining, Data Fusion, And Libraries, Katherine Chiang

International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference

Our computerized world churns out data and their analysis is a challenge. Data mining and data fusion are two complementary approaches to processing dynamic, large and/or heterogeneous data. They are already used in various research disciplines and real‐world applications and that use will grow. This paper describes and defines these approaches using examples, and suggests possible services and applications by libraries. The focus is on eliciting the common information concepts that might be of interest, not on understanding the details of the computer/information science work, or the validity of the approach in solving a particular research or commercial problem.

The Interpretation Of Habitat Preference Metrics Under Use–Availability Designs, Hawthorne L. Beyer, Daniel T. Haydon, Juan M. Morales, Jacqueline L. Frair, Mark Hebblewhite, Michael Mitchell, Jason Matthiopoulos Jun 2010

The Interpretation Of Habitat Preference Metrics Under Use–Availability Designs, Hawthorne L. Beyer, Daniel T. Haydon, Juan M. Morales, Jacqueline L. Frair, Mark Hebblewhite, Michael Mitchell, Jason Matthiopoulos

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Models of habitat preference are widely used to quantify animal–habitat relationships, to describe and predict differential space use by animals, and to identify habitat that is important to an animal (i.e. that is assumed to influence fitness). Quantifying habitat preference involves the statistical comparison of samples of habitat use and availability. Preference is therefore contingent upon both of these samples. The inferences that can be made from use versus availability designs are influenced by subjectivity in defining what is available to the animal, the problem of quantifying the accessibility of available resources and the framework in which preference is modelled. …

Resolving Issues Of Imprecise And Habitat-Biased Locations In Ecological Analyses Using Gps Telemetry Data, Jacqueline L. Frair, John Fieberg, Mark Hebblewhite, Francesca Cagnacci, Nicholas J. Decesare, Luca Pedrotti

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Global positioning system (GPS) technologies collect unprecedented volumes of animal location data, providing ever greater insight into animal behaviour. Despite a certain degree of inherent imprecision and bias in GPS locations, little synthesis regarding the predominant causes of these errors, their implications for ecological analysis or solutions exists. Terrestrial deployments report 37 per cent or less non-random data loss and location precision 30 m or less on average, with canopy closure having the predominant effect, and animal behaviour interacting with local habitat conditions to affect errors in unpredictable ways. Home-range estimates appear generally robust to contemporary levels of location imprecision …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Free-Base, Copper, And Nickel Isocorroles, Giuseppe Pomarico, Xiao Xiao, Sara Nardis, Roberto Paolesse, Frank R. Fronczek, Kevin M. Smith, Yuanyuan Fang, Zhongping Ou, Karl M. Kadish

Faculty Publications

A series of free-base and metalated isocorroles represented as (TT-n-iso-Cor)H2 and (TT-n-iso-Cor)MII, where n = 5 or 10 and M = Ni or Cu, were synthesized and characterized by electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry in CH2Cl2 containing 0.1 M tetra-n-butylammonium perchlorate. The metalation of the free-base macrocycles with CoII, MnIII, or ZnII was also attempted but was unsuccessful. Six isocorroles were isolated and shown to undergo two stepwise oxidations to give π-cation radicals and dications in CH 2Cl2, with the most stable products being obtained in the case of the 10-substituted derivatives. The same isocorroles could also be reduced by one or …

Proteomics-Based Systems Biology Modeling Of Bovine Germinal Vesicle Stage Oocyte And Cumulus Cell Interaction., Divyaswetha Peddinti, Erdogan Memili, Shane C. Burgess

CVM Publications

BACKGROUND: Oocytes are the female gametes which establish the program of life after fertilization. Interactions between oocyte and the surrounding cumulus cells at germinal vesicle (GV) stage are considered essential for proper maturation or 'programming' of oocytes, which is crucial for normal fertilization and embryonic development. However, despite its importance, little is known about the molecular events and pathways involved in this bidirectional communication. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We used differential detergent fractionation multidimensional protein identification technology (DDF-Mud PIT) on bovine GV oocyte and cumulus cells and identified 811 and 1247 proteins in GV oocyte and cumulus cells, respectively; 371 proteins were …

Distinguishing Technology From Biology: A Critical Review Of The Use Of Gps Telemetry Data In Ecology, Mark Hebblewhite, Daniel T. Haydon

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

In the past decade, ecologists have witnessed vast improvements in our ability to collect animal movement data through animal-borne technology, such as through GPS or ARGOS systems. However, more data does not necessarily yield greater knowledge in understanding animal ecology and conservation. In this paper, we provide a review of the major benefits, problems and potential misuses of GPS/Argos technology to animal ecology and conservation. Benefits are obvious, and include the ability to collect fine-scale spatio-temporal location data on many previously impossible to study animals, such as ocean-going fish, migratory songbirds and long-distance migratory mammals. These benefits come with significant …

Correlation And Studies Of Habitat Selection: Problem, Red Herring Or Opportunity?, John Fieberg, Jason Matthiopoulos, Mark Hebblewhite, Mark S. Boyce, Jacqueline L. Frair

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

With the advent of new technologies, animal locations are being collected at ever finer spatio-temporal scales. We review analytical methods for dealing with correlated data in the context of resource selection, including post hoc variance inflation techniques, ‘two-stage’ approaches based on models fit to each individual, generalized estimating equations and hierarchical mixed-effects models. These methods are applicable to a wide range of correlated data problems, but can be difficult to apply and remain especially challenging for use–availability sampling designs because the correlation structure for combinations of used and available points are not likely to follow common parametric forms. We also …
