Airborne Particulate Contamination Effect On High Voltage Breakdowns During Tube Conditioning, Armida J. Carbajal
Airborne Particulate Contamination Effect On High Voltage Breakdowns During Tube Conditioning, Armida J. Carbajal
Mathematics & Statistics ETDs
In this research we examine high voltage breakdowns (HVBs) during neutron tube conditioning which has been a problem for decades. In the recent past there has been much debate on whether or not to procure a real-time airborne monitoring system for the commercial production of neutron tubes in order to determine the effect and calculate the impact of airborne particles. The main problem is, such monitoring system is costly, and with the exact causes of HVBs not being fully known, the expense must be justified. The goal of this thesis was to analyze the instrumentation used in airborne particle monitoring …

Entry And Fusion Of Emerging Paramyxoviruses, Rebecca Ellis Dutch
Entry And Fusion Of Emerging Paramyxoviruses, Rebecca Ellis Dutch
Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Paramyxoviruses are a family of non-segmented RNA viruses that includes major human pathogens such as measles virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and significant animal viruses like rinderpest. In recent years, several new paramyxoviruses have been identified, further increasing the breadth and importance of this viral family. While many elements of the fusion and entry mechanisms of these recently identified pathogens are conserved, there are interesting differences, including variations in receptor binding, cell tropism, fusion (F) protein proteolytic activation, and triggering of membrane fusion. Thus, study of their entry mechanisms has highlighted the diversity of these critical events in the …
Effect Of Solids Retention Time In Membrane Bioreactors On Reverse Osmosis Membrane Fouling, Elizabeth Field
Effect Of Solids Retention Time In Membrane Bioreactors On Reverse Osmosis Membrane Fouling, Elizabeth Field
Civil Engineering ETDs
As sources of clean fresh water diminish, there is an increasing interest in water reuse. Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are commonly used in wastewater treatment plants, though reuse of treated wastewater for potable purposes requires more advanced treatment. Reverse osmosis (RO), a water treatment process commonly used for drinking water, provides near complete removal of all inorganic and organic constituents from water. While much research has been conducted on both treatment processes, little research has been done on how the combined processes work together in treating wastewater to high enough standards for potable water reuse. The MBR-RO treatment process was studied …
Exposing Sexual Harassment And Bullying In Secondary Schools: An Intersectional Feminist Analysis., Rebecca Erickson
Exposing Sexual Harassment And Bullying In Secondary Schools: An Intersectional Feminist Analysis., Rebecca Erickson
Sociology ETDs
Incidents of sexual harassment and bullying in secondary school are extremely commonplace, yet student experiences are underreported to school officials. Moreover, there are competing definitions regarding what constitutes sexual harassment among administrators, staff, and students. How does social identity influence incidents of sexual harassment and bullying in secondary schools? What kinds of sexual harassment and bullying occur and what are their consequences? How do gender, race/ethnicity, and class affect who is disciplined for sexual harassment and bullying? What role do peers and friends play in the choice to report an incident of sexual harassment? Two distinct school districts are compared, …
Bioadhesion To Model Thermally Responsive Surfaces, Brett J. Andrzejewski
Bioadhesion To Model Thermally Responsive Surfaces, Brett J. Andrzejewski
Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs
This dissertation focuses on the characterization of two surfaces: mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of hexa(ethylene glycol) and alkyl thiolates (mixed SAM) and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm). The synthesis of hexa(ethylene gylcol) alkyl thiol (C11EG6OH) is presented along with the mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance results. The mixed SAM surface was confirmed to be thermally responsive by contact angle goniometry, 35° at 28 °C and 55° at 40 °C. In addition, the mixed SAM surfaces were confirmed to be thermally responsive for various aqueous mediums by tensiometry. Factors such as oxygen, age, and surface mole fraction and how they affect the thermal …

Making The Transition From Text To Data Repositories, Julie Sweetkind-Singer, Robert Schwarzwalder
International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference
Stanford University Libraries & Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) has been a national leader in developing repository strategies for digital text and image files. Stanford University Libraries began work on long-term preservation and access to geospatial data over five years ago after being awarded a Library of Congress grant through the National Digital Information Infrastructure & Preservation Program (NDIIPP). The desire to build on this expertise led to an initiative two years ago to develop a strategy for acquiring, preserving, managing and providing services for a broader range of scientific and technical data. Progress to date has included: a better understanding …

Developing A Model Of Transmasculine Identity, Nicole L. Saltzburg
Developing A Model Of Transmasculine Identity, Nicole L. Saltzburg
Open Access Dissertations
Traditional psychotherapy with transgender clients has focused on helping gender dysphoric individuals assume an "opposite" gender role. However, recently, there have been calls for trans-positive therapy focusing on the exploration and affirmation of alternative gender identifications. The majority of the research on transgender identity has been conducted with male-to-female (MTF) identified, or transfeminine, individuals. Comparatively little attention has been given to the experience of female-to-male (FTM) identified, or transmasculine, individuals. The primary goal of this study was to explore constructs and identify underlying themes that transmasculine people use in constructing their gender identities in order to develop a structural model …

Toxicology and Animal Models in Research Collection
Over the past year, a series on commentaries have appeared in the Toxicological Sciences Forum Series related to the 2007 National Research Council (NRC) publication, Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: A Vision and A Strategy. The first article in the series provided an overview of the vision and was accompanied by an editorial by the three editors of Toxicological Sciences. During the past year, eight invited commentaries from the academic, industrial, and regulatory sectors have provided diverse perspectives on the vision, noted challenges to its implementation, and highlighted aspects of toxicity testing that were not addressed in …

We present the results of a search for pair production of the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (the top squark t̃1) decaying to a b quark and a chargino χ̃1± with a subsequent χ̃1± decay into a neutralino χ̃10, lepton ℓ, and neutrino ν. Using a data sample corresponding to 2.7fb-1 of integrated luminosity of pp̄ collisions at √s=1.96TeV collected by the CDF II detector, we reconstruct the mass of top squark candidate events and fit the observed mass spectrum to a combination of standard model processes and t̃1t̃̄1 signal. We find no evidence for t̃1t̃̄1 production and set …

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
The potential to adapt to a changing climate depends in part upon the standing genetic variation present in wild populations. In corals, the dispersive larval phase is particularly vulnerable to the effects of environmental stress. Larval survival and response to stress during dispersal and settlement will play a key role in the persistence of coral populations. Methodology/Principal Findings: To test the hypothesis that larval transcription profiles reflect location-specific responses to thermal stress, symbiont-free gametes from three to four colonies of the scleractinian coral Montastraea faveolata were collected from Florida and Mexico, fertilized, and raised under mean and elevated (up 1 …

The Efficacy And Safety Of Insulin-Sensitizing Drugs In Hiv-Associated Lipodystrophy Syndrome: A Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Trials, Siddharth H. Sheth, Robin J. Larson
Dartmouth Scholarship
HIV-associated lipodystrophy syndrome (HALS) is characterized by insulin resistance, abnormal lipid metabolism and redistribution of body fat. To date, there has been no quantitative summary of the effects of insulin sensitizing-agents for the treatment of this challenging problem. We searched MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, clinical trial registries, conference proceedings and references for randomized trials evaluating rosiglitazone, pioglitazone or metformin in patients with evidence of HALS (last update December 2009). Two reviewers independently abstracted data and assessed quality using a standard form. We contacted authors for missing data and calculated weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for each …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Nanomaterials: Gold Nanoshells With Organic- Inorganic Hybrid Cores, Alisha D. Peterson
Synthesis And Characterization Of Novel Nanomaterials: Gold Nanoshells With Organic- Inorganic Hybrid Cores, Alisha D. Peterson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Gold nanoshells, a material generally composed of a core of silica surrounded by
a thin shell of gold, are of great interest due to their unique and tunable optical properties.
By varying the shell thickness and core size, the absorption and scattering properties are
greatly enhanced. The nanoshells can be made to absorb or scatter light at various
regions across the electromagnetic spectrum, from visible to the near infrared. The
ability to tune the optical properties of nanoshells allows for their potential use in many
different areas of research such as optical imaging, tumor ablation, drug delivery, and
solar energy …
