After completing this course, the students will be knowledgeable and have a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Earth Science. Genotype And Breed Trend Influences On Citric Acid And Coagulation Times Of Raw Milk, Melissa Looney

The objective of the study was to determine if citric acid levels measured in milk was related to genetic variants identified in Holstein and Jersey cows. The data used were milk samples collected from both Holstein and Jersey cows at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Citric acid levels and other constituents were measured using FTIR methods with the FOSS MilkoscanTM FT2 on each sample. Genotypes were obtained for the DGAT 1 locus using polymerase chain reaction and an enzymatic digestion using the MWO I restriction enzyme. Observations were obtained on 13 Holsteins and 12 Jersey cows. Results indicated that citric …

The objective of this study was to determine whether ultraviolet light treatment of milk could be used in adjunct with pasteurization and to determine whether the microbial count in bulk tank raw milk was sufficient enough to receive significant results. Samples were collected from a bulk tank filled with 1600 gallons of raw Holstein and Jersey milk from the Cal Poly Dairy throughout the course of a week. Control (library) samples were also taken from the raw milk tank and stored without air or agitation for comparison. These samples were plated each day and examined 24 and 48 hours after …

Much research has gone into what biological and social factors raise the risk of children developing cognitive, social, or behavioral problems. This project looks at what characteristics of the mother are significantly associated with different temperaments in the child which may predict problems developed in the child later in life. These characteristics include mother’s age, her education level, household income, parenting attitudes, involvement with the child, and drug and alcohol use. Data was used from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study conducted by the Office of Population Research at Princeton University. Cumulative logistic regression was used to analyze the …

A New Record Of Atractus Boettgeri (Serpentes: Colubridae), With Notes On Taxonomy And Natural History, Jorge Salazar-Bravo, Julieta Vargas, Agustin Jimenez-Ruiz, Jay M. Savage

We report a range extension of Atractus boettgeri, a rare snake endemic to Bolivia. This species differs from Atractus taeniatus by a higher segmental count (well outside the range for A. taeniatus) and by having only 6 maxillary teeth as opposed to 8-9 in A. taeniatus. In addition, A. boettgeri differs from A. emmeli in having 6-6 supralabials (versus 7-7) and fewer ventrals (175-177 versus 181-189 in females). All known records of A. boettgeri indicate an association between this species and the Cerrado vegetation of central Bolivia. This report is also unique in that the specimen reported …

This study examines the relationship between the number of types of traumatic events experienced by children 3 to 6 years old, parenting stress, and children's posttraumatic stress (PTS). Parents and caregivers provided data for 154 urban children admitted into community-based mental health or developmental services. By parent and caregiver report, children experienced an average of 4.9 different types of potentially traumatic events. Nearly one quarter of the children evidenced clinically significant PTS. Posttraumatic stress was positively and significantly related to family violence and other family-related trauma exposure, nonfamily violence and trauma exposure, and parenting stress. Understanding how different processing variables influence wood welded bonds is vital if the technique will ever be used to create engineered lumber without using adhesives. A variation of vibration welding, wood welding uses pressure and friction to bond materials together. During welding, heat causes a softening in the wood, a naturally occurring composite material. This softening leads to fiber entanglement and a bond forms upon cooling.

The world population is growing at an alarming rate. The rapid growth in population numbers and density along with the steady increase in the rates are causing issues in many countries. Although every country is experiencing many consequences of the growth, the countries of Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa seem to be suffering immensely. Not only does the increasing human population in these third world countries create an overarching competition for natural resources such as food, water, and land, the growth also has detrimental effects on the surrounding environment, wildlife populations, ecotourism, and traditional African cultures.

The present study focused on young women, and the manner in which communication with their mothers may facilitate decreased sexual risk behaviors in rural Kenya. With regard to sexual behaviors, Hutchinson and Wood (2007) developed the parent-based expansion of the theory of planned behavior (PETPB). The PETPB is a theoretical framework that builds upon the theory of planned behavior, to include the influence of parents in understanding adolescent sexual risk behavior. A variety of animal models have been developed for modeling ischemic stroke. The middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model has been utilized extensively, especially in rodents. While the MCAO model provides stroke researchers with an excellent platform to investigate the disease, controversial or even paradoxical results are occasionally seen in the literature utilizing this model. Various factors exert important effects on the outcome in this stroke model, including the age and sex of the animal examined. In this paper we present a model for a plate-beam system to represent a bioinspired flexible wing. Using a Galerkin based finite element approximation to the system, we compute functional gains that can be used for sensor placement and show that a piezoceramic actuator on the beam can be used for camber control

Biomedical Imaging and Biosignal Analysis Laboratory

Conventional (Doppler-based) blood flow velocity measurement methods using ultrasound are capable of resolving the axial component (i.e., that aligned with the ultrasound propagation direction) of the blood flow velocity vector. However, these methods are incapable of detecting blood flow in the direction normal to the ultrasound beam. In addition, these methods require repeated pulse-echo interrogation at the same spatial location. A new method has been introduced which estimates the lateral component of blood flow within a single image frame using the observation that the speckle pattern corresponding to blood reflectors (typically red blood cells) stretches (i.e., is smeared) if the …

The integration of block-copolymers and nanoimprint lithography presents a novel and cost-effective approach to achieving nanoscale patterning capabilities. The authors demonstrate the fabrication of a surface-enhanced Raman scattering device using templates created by the block-copolymers nanoimprint lithography integrated method.

This thesis is a heuristic examination of my experience of intuition as a new dance/movement therapist. The purpose of this investigation was to provide an inceptive inroad into the little explored but recently popular subject of intuition, specifically as it relates to dance/movement therapy and the use of the dance therapist’s intuition as a therapeutic resource. Creating a journal that captured my contemplation of intuition and my experiences of intuition, both in clinical dance/movement therapy work and in creative and personal experiences, was the primary method of data collection. Children who have had severe early childhood experiences of neglect, abuse, and/or abrupt separation from their caregivers between the ages of six months and three years are at risk for developing reactive attachment disorder. In one form of reactive attachment disorder, known as the inhibited type, the child fails to initiate interactions and positively respond in social situations. Such behaviors make it challenging for therapists to establish therapeutic relationships with children who have been diagnosed with the inhibited type of reactive attachment disorder. Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

Concentrations of extracellular divalent cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) fall substantially during intensive synaptic transmission as well as during some pathophysiological conditions such as epilepsy and brain ischemia. Here we report that a synthetic serine protease inhibitor, nafamostat mesylate (NM), and several of its analogues, block recombinant TRPM7 currents expressed in HEK293T cells in inverse relationship to the concentration of extracellular divalent cations. Lowering extracellular Ca2+ and Mg2+ also evokes a divalent-sensitive non-selective cation current that is mediated by TRPM7 expression in hippocampal neurons. In cultured hippocampal neurons, NM blocked these TRPM7-mediated currents with an apparent affinity of 27 μM, as …
