[1] Emissions from 34 laboratory biomass fires were investigated at the combustion facility of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula, Montana. Gas-phase organic and inorganic acids were quantified using negative-ion proton-transfer chemical-ionization mass spectrometry (NI-PT-CIMS), open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR), and proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). NI-PT-CIMS is a novel technique that measures the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of ions generated from reactions of acetate (CH3C(O)O−) ions with inorganic and organic acids. The emission ratios for various important reactive acids with respect to CO were determined. Emission ratios for isocyanic acid (HNCO), 1,2 …

Design, Synthesis And Sar Of A New Class Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Β-Secretase., Jordan M. Anderson
Design, Synthesis And Sar Of A New Class Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Β-Secretase., Jordan M. Anderson
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
β-Secretase is the enzyme responsible for the Amyloid-β plaques found in Alzheimer’s disease. Inhibition of this enzyme should prove to be very useful in combating Alzheimer’s disease by preventing this build-up. After a computational screening of the NCID-2 library a molecule was found to possess a 2- propanol structure with aromatic groups on either side. This moiety was replicated by a combinatorial library of 150 compounds. These compounds were screened initially against β-secretase at 100, 50, and then 25 μM to narrow down to 17 structures showing 50% inhibition at 25 μM. The IC50 for each of the 17 molecules …

Random Automata Networks: Why Playing Dice Is Not A Vice, Christof Teuscher
Random Automata Networks: Why Playing Dice Is Not A Vice, Christof Teuscher
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Random automata networks consist of a set of simple compute nodes interacting with each other. In this generic model, one or multiple model parameters, such as the the node interactions and/or the compute functions, are chosen at random. Random Boolean Networks (RBNs) are a particular case of discrete dynamical automata networks where both time and states are discrete. While traditional RBNs are generally credited to Stuart Kauffman (1969), who introduced them as simplified models of gene regulation, Alan Turing proposed unorganized machines as early as 1948. In this talk I will start with Alan Turing's early work on unorganized machines, …

Mechanism Of Fiber Assembly: Treatment Of Aβ Peptide Aggregation With A Coarse-Grained United-Residue Force Field, Ana Rojas, Adam Liwo, Dana Browne, Harold A. Scheraga
Faculty Publications
The growth mechanism of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide fibrils was studied by a physics-based coarse-grained united-residue model and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. To identify the mechanism of monomer addition to an Aβ1-40 fibril, we placed an unstructured monomer at a distance of 20 Å from a fibril template and allowed it to interact freely with the latter. The monomer was not biased towards fibril conformation by either the force field or the MD algorithm. With the use of a coarse-grained model with replica-exchange molecular dynamics, a longer timescale was accessible, making it possible to observe how the monomers probe different binding …
Parental Emotion Invalidation, Emotion Inhibition, And Rumination In Relation To Adolescent Depression, Janelle Victoria Williams
Parental Emotion Invalidation, Emotion Inhibition, And Rumination In Relation To Adolescent Depression, Janelle Victoria Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study tested a conceptual model which incorporated parental emotion invalidation of sadness, emotion inhibition, and rumination as contributing factors to depressive symptoms in adolescence. Adolescents completed questionnaires measuring their own emotion inhibition, rumination, and depression as well as their perceptions of their parents' invalidating reponses towards their sadness. Parents completed questionnaires measuring their perceptions of their invalidating responses towards their adoelscents' sadness, their perception of their adoelscents' sadness inhibition, and their perception of their adolescents' depressive symptoms. Path analyses were conducted to examine the direct and indirect relations among the four variables. Results showed that emotion inhibition and rumination …

Examining The Complex Nature Of Emotion, Metacognition, And Study-Time In Multimedia Learning, Amber Dawn Chauncey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Learning with multimedia is challenging and often requires learners to regulate cognitive, metacognitive, and affective processes in order achieve optimal learning. The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of induced emotional states on learners’ metacognitive monitoring and control, and learning performance in a self-paced multimedia learning environment. A within-subjects design and a false-biofeedback paradigm were used to induce various emotional states in 50 undergraduate participants while they answered both text-based and inference questions about the human circulatory system. Across 24 trials, participants were presented with accelerated, baseline, and no heart rates (control) and were asked to …

Development Of An Integrated Soil Properties Mapping System, Rajveer S. Dhillon
Development Of An Integrated Soil Properties Mapping System, Rajveer S. Dhillon
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
One of the main goals of precision agriculture (PA) is to define spatial variability in soil properties within an agricultural field to make decisions that can maximize profitability and reduce negative environmental impact. Various soil sensor systems have been developed over the years to map soil properties on-the-go. In this study, an Integrated Soil Mapping System (ISMS) was developed to predict soil water content, soil organic matter, and soil mechanical resistance on-the-go using a capacitance moisture sensor, an optical sensor, and a load cell sensor respectively. These sensors were mounted on the ISMS for acquiring three different data layers at …
Ecological Impacts Of Stream Bank Stabilization In A Great Plains River, Christopher M. Pracheil
Ecological Impacts Of Stream Bank Stabilization In A Great Plains River, Christopher M. Pracheil
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Reduced ecological complexity, decreased water quality, and accelerated stream bank erosion are common disturbances in rivers with agriculturally dominated watersheds. Massive bank failures, increased sediment loads, and decreased riverine habitat are current problems in the agriculturally dominated Cedar River of central Nebraska. In an effort to slow erosion and prevent further ecological degradation, 20 reach scale stream bank stabilization projects were installed on the Cedar River from 2001 to 2004. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of the Cedar River stream bank stabilization projects on the ecological conditions within the Cedar River. Stream bank erosion, suspended …

“Did You Call Me?” 5-Month-Old Infants Own Name Guides Their Attention, Eugenio Parise, Angela D. Friederici, Tricia Striano
Publications and Research
An infant's own name is a unique social cue. Infants are sensitive to their own name by 4 months of age, but whether they use their names as a social cue is unknown. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was measured as infants heard their own name or stranger's names and while looking at novel objects. Event related brain potentials (ERPs) in response to names revealed that infants differentiate their own name from stranger names from the first phoneme. The amplitude of the ERPs to objects indicated that infants attended more to objects after hearing their own names compared to another name. Thus, by …

Simple Sequence Repeat Variation In The Daphnia Pulex Genome, Way Sung, Abraham Tucker, R. Daniel Bergeron, Michael Lynch, W. Kelley Thomas
Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences
Background: Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are highly variable features of all genomes. Their rapid evolution makes them useful for tracing the evolutionary history of populations and investigating patterns of selection and mutation across gnomes. The recently sequenced Daphnia pulex genome provides us with a valuable data set to study the mode and tempo of SSR evolution, without the inherent biases that accompany marker selection. Results: Here we catalogue SSR loci in the Daphnia pulex genome with repeated motif sizes of 1-100 nucleotides with a minimum of 3 perfect repeats. We then used whole genome shotgun reads to determine the average …

The Use Of High Distillers' Grains And Nutrient Management In Beef Feedlots, Amy R. Rich
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of feeding wet distillers grains (WDGS) at 70% and wheat straw at 25% (DM basis) on finishing steer performance and N mass balance in open feedlot pens. Four treatments were tested as a 2x2 factorial with factors being diet and pen cleaning frequency (monthly or at the end of the feeding period). In both experiments the CON treatment (corn based diet) had greater DMI, ADG, HCW, marbling and fat depth. There was greater N intake and N excretion for both the WINTER and SUMMER experiments on the WDGS. Not all the additional …
Supramolecular Paths For The Synthesis Of Composite Hollow Particles, Alex Couzis
Supramolecular Paths For The Synthesis Of Composite Hollow Particles, Alex Couzis
Amgen Seminar Series in Chemical Engineering
Hollow and porous micro/nanostructures are of great interest in many current and emerging areas of technology; their interior space can be used for storage, or a reaction chamber that can encapsulate various substances, and the shell structure contains paths affording control release systems. As a result these materials have had great impact in many technological areas such as the encapsulation and controlled release of substances (e.g., drugs, genes, dyes, inks, cosmetics, pesticides, food stuffs), protection of biologically active species, removal of pollutants, catalysis, and sensing.
Hollow silica nanospheres were synthesized using a two-step sacrificial templating technique. The template used consisted …
Going Green Down Under: Environmental Communication And Green Product Marketing In The South Eastern Australian Wine Industry, Kevin Michael Visconti
Going Green Down Under: Environmental Communication And Green Product Marketing In The South Eastern Australian Wine Industry, Kevin Michael Visconti
Open Access Dissertations
The consumption of wine has served as an international communication expedient for thousands of years. From classical symposiums of ancient times to religious ceremonies practiced for centuries, wine has played a significant part in countless social gatherings across the ages and continents. Recent growth in international wine trade, however, has impacted an increasingly disrupted natural environment through amplified carbon output, overuse of synthetic chemicals, topsoil erosion, and water mismanagement. Vintners, or winemakers, have been tasked by the implementation of new legal standards, as well as the urging of ecologically aware prospective consumers, to instill a winemaking process that is green, …
Avian Developmental Endocrinology: The Effects And Role Of Yolk Hormones, Sibling Dynamics, And Life-History, Corinne Patricia Kozlowski
Avian Developmental Endocrinology: The Effects And Role Of Yolk Hormones, Sibling Dynamics, And Life-History, Corinne Patricia Kozlowski
Dissertations
Inter-specific variation of the endocrine system is an underlying component for variation in avian life-history. Females deposit hormones into the yolks of their eggs, and embryonic exposure affects nestling phenotype. Hormones are also produced endogenously by developing nestlings, further influencing their behavior and physiology. This dissertation examines the role of the endocrine system in development by focusing on several different avian taxa. Yolk hormone concentrations often vary across the laying order and may mediate hatching asynchrony. These patterns were characterized in two species that lay asynchronously hatching clutches: Eastern screech owls (Megascops asio) and cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus). The patterns described …

A Microfluidic Device To Establish Concentration Gradients Using Reagent Density Differences, Qingjun Kong, Richard A. Able, Jr., Veronica Dudu, Maribel Vazquez
Publications and Research
Microfabrication has become widely utilized to generate controlled microenvironments that establish chemical concentration gradients for a variety of engineering and life science applications. To establish microfluidic flow, the majority of existing devices rely upon additional facilities, equipment, and excessive reagent supplies, which together limit device portability as well as constrain device usage to individuals trained in technological disciplines. The current work presents our laboratory-developed bridged microLane system, which is a stand-alone device that runs via conventional pipette loading and can operate for several days without need of external machinery or additional reagent volumes. The bridged microLane is a two-layer polydimethylsiloxane …
