Investigation Of Potential Pathways And Multi-Cycle Bioregeneration Of Ion-Exchange Resin Laden With Perchlorate, Mohamadali Sharbatmaleki
Investigation Of Potential Pathways And Multi-Cycle Bioregeneration Of Ion-Exchange Resin Laden With Perchlorate, Mohamadali Sharbatmaleki
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Ion-exchange (IX) is possibly the most feasible technology for perchlorate removal and perchlorate-selective and non-selective IX resins are commercially available for this purpose. The use of both resins has shortcomings. Selective resins are incinerated after one time use, and non-selective resins produce a regenerant waste stream that contains high concentration of perchlorate. A process involving directly contacting of spent IX resin containing perchlorate with perchlorate-reducing bacteria (PRB) to bioregenerate the resin has been developed and proven recently. In this process PRB biodegrade perchlorate ions which are attached to the functional groups of the resin.
Although its feasibility has been proven, …

Automated Procedures For Quantification Of Rhizosphere Physical Properties In Micro Ct Images, Natarajan S. Pillai
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The rhizosphere, i.e. the zone of soil immediately surrounding plant roots plays a prominent role in supplying plants with water and nutrients. However, surprisingly little is known about rhizosphere physical properties and how they affect root growth, water and nutrient uptake. The lack of non-invasive and non-destructive imaging techniques necessary to observe living roots growing in undisturbed soil have been a main reason for this shortcoming. Recent advances in synchrotron X-ray micro tomography (CMT) provide the potential to directly observe soil physical properties around living roots in-situ.In this work we develop procedures for assisting scientist to study the soil properties …

The Perils Of The Imperfect Expectation Of The Perfect Baby., Frank A Chervenak, Laurence B Mccullough, Robert L Brent
Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Advances in modern medicine invite the assumption that medicine can control human biology. There is a perilous logic that leads from expectations of medicine's control over reproductive biology to the expectation of having a perfect baby. This article proposes that obstetricians should take a preventive ethics approach to the care of pregnant women with expectations for a perfect baby. We use Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic short story, "The Birthmark," to illustrate the perils of the logic of control and perfection through science and then identify possible contemporary sources of the expectation of the perfect baby. We propose that the informed consent …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
MicroRNAs regulate pathways contributing to oncogenesis, and thus the mechanisms causing dysregulation of microRNA expression in cancer are of significant interest. Mature mir-29b levels are decreased in malignant cells, and this alteration promotes the malignant phenotype, including apoptosis resistance. However, the mechanism responsible for mir-29b suppression is unknown. Here, we examined mir-29 expression from chromosome 7q32 using cholangiocarcinoma cells as a model for mir-29b downregulation. Using 5' rapid amplification of cDNA ends, the transcriptional start site was identified for this microRNA locus. Computational analysis revealed the presence of two putative E-box (Myc-binding) sites, a Gli-binding site, and four NF-kappaB-binding sites …

Plant Litter Decomposition In Mitigated And Reference Wetlands, Richard Tristan Gingerich
Plant Litter Decomposition In Mitigated And Reference Wetlands, Richard Tristan Gingerich
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Decomposition of plant litter in wetlands influences many processes and is driven by a complex web of interacting forces. This makes litter decomposition a useful measure of wetland function and a possible means of judging wetland functional replacement in compensatory mitigation projects. However, the web of interacting forces that intricately connect decomposition to wetland function also make it difficult to identify the importance of individual variables. In order for decomposition to be used as a metric to judge wetland function, its driving forces must be better understood.;This study examined some of the variables that drive decomposition. Specifically, decomposition rates were …
The Effects Of Riparian Tree Harvest Intensity And Woody Debris Addition On Biotic And Abiotic Stream Characteristics, Jered Michael Studinski
The Effects Of Riparian Tree Harvest Intensity And Woody Debris Addition On Biotic And Abiotic Stream Characteristics, Jered Michael Studinski
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Forested headwater streams rely on riparian zones for many critical products and services. Riparian areas shade streams, stabilize stream banks, filter sediment, and provide allochthonous materials like leaves, large woody debris (LWD), and terrestrial invertebrates (TI's). Logging can affect the products and services of riparian zones. Best management practices (BMP's) have been developed to minimize the impacts of riparian timber harvest on streams. The main component of these guidelines is the establishment of a road-free riparian buffer called a streamside management zone (SMZ). The West Virginia Division of Forestry's BMP's require a SMZ that is at least 30 m wide …
Validation Of Top-Down, Intelligent Reservoir Modeling Using Numerical Reservoir Simulation, Yorgi Gomez
Validation Of Top-Down, Intelligent Reservoir Modeling Using Numerical Reservoir Simulation, Yorgi Gomez
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The technique, that is named Top-Down Intelligent Reservoir Modeling, (not to be confused with BP's TDRM history matching technique), integrates traditional reservoir engineering analysis with Artificial Intelligence & Data Mining (AI&DM) technology to generate a full field model. The distinguishing feature of this novel technique is its incredibly low data requirement in order to perform analysis which leads to savings of time and research resources to obtain accurate predictions. It only requires field production rate and some well log data as porosity, thickness, and initial water saturation to start the analysis and provide complete development strategies of the field. Although …
Determination Of Equilibrium Binding Constants For Lps Interaction With Tlr4, Santhoshi P. Dixit
Determination Of Equilibrium Binding Constants For Lps Interaction With Tlr4, Santhoshi P. Dixit
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are the best characterized Pathogen Recognition Receptors (PRRs) and are directly responsible for initiating an appropriate defense against bacterial and viral infection. Among all the TLRs known, only TLR4 is able to activate both MyD88-dependent induction of genes encoding inflammatory molecules and TRIF-dependent production of type I interferon. Therefore, in this study we report the binding of TLR4 by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) which is the component on the cell-wall of gram-negative bacteria. Binding of LPS is a prerequisite for the activation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) by LPS which increases the expression of critical proinflammatory cytokines that organize …

Playback Surveys And Breeding Habitat Characteristics Of Golden-Winged Warblers (Vermivora Chrysoptera) On High-Elevation Pasturelands On The Monongahela National Forest, West Virginia, Kyle Ray Aldinger
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Across the breeding range of the Golden-winged Warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera), significant population declines have been documented even before the implementation of the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and continue as such today. The plight of this species has been blamed on the loss and degradation of early successional habitat, interactions with the closely related Blue-winged Warbler (Vermivora pinus), and Brown-headed Cowbird (Molothrus ater) brood parasitism. Most breeding Golden-winged Warblers are found in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the United States, but there are considerable populations persisting at higher elevations (>600 m) in the central Appalachian …
Surface Coating Of Condenser Tubing And Co2 Sparging For Preventing Fouling And Water Use Reduction, Jinyan Sun
Surface Coating Of Condenser Tubing And Co2 Sparging For Preventing Fouling And Water Use Reduction, Jinyan Sun
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Fouling reduces heat transfer efficiency and increases the amount of water use, which result in lower energy production and increased fuel consumption in thermoelectric power plants. The current study was to investigate the effects of coating and CO2 sparging on fouling prevention and cooling water use reduction. Bench-scale experiments were conducted to simulate the cooling system in power plants and to evaluate fouling rates on treated and untreated condenser tubes. Four bench-scale experiments (two without CO2 sparging and two with CO2 sparging) were performed. In each of those experiments, water from the Monongahela River (Morgantown, West Virginia) was used as …

Performance And Economics Of Methane Hydrate Reservoirs, Lavanya Nyayapathi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In order to address the world's growing energy demand, the necessity to explore more and more unconventional sources of energy arises. Recently there has been increased interest in the potential of natural gas hydrates as an alternate energy resource. Hydrates are distributed worldwide and have a high energy density in that 1 m3 of methane hydrates can release as much as 164 m3 of gas.;Hydrates were studied as a laboratory curiosity until and then naturally occurring hydrates were discovered in 1934 clogging gas and oil pipelines. The first naturally occurring hydrate deposits were suggested in 1965 by Makogon in Russia. …

Insectivorous Bat Assemblages In Relation To Spatial Aspects Of Virgin Jungle Reserves In Peninsular Malaysia., Joann Christine Luruthusamy
Student Works (2010-2019)
The tropical region supports the highest diversity of bat fauna known. Reasons for their success are mainly due to their large geographical ranges, the diversity of habitats, various foraging strategies and the tendency to exhibit a variety of roosting behaviour. This study addresses the issue of insectivorous bat distribution in relation to spatial aspects such as geography, size, distance and topography. This information was gathered from the 958 individuals and 27 insectivorous bat species that were captured and identified over a span of 18 months. This study which included six virgin jungle reserves of various sizes across Peninsular Malaysia revealed …
Patrilocal Exogamy As A Monitoring Mechanism: How Inheritance And Residence Patterns Co-Evolve, Brishti Guha
Patrilocal Exogamy As A Monitoring Mechanism: How Inheritance And Residence Patterns Co-Evolve, Brishti Guha
Research Collection School Of Economics
Economists have modeled inheritance norms assuming the pattern of post-marital residence is exogenous. We model the co-evolution of these two institutions, examining how patrilineal inheritance and patrilocal exogamy reinforced each other in a patrilineal-patrilocal equilibrium. We also derive conditions for a matrilineal-matrilocal equilibrium. The endogenous choice of the old to monitor the sexual behavior of the young women who reside with them, thereby affecting the paternity confidence of the young women’s husbands and hence their incentives, is crucial. Our model fits the data on the relationship between inheritance, residence patterns and paternity confidence, and on the importance of paternity uncertainty.

Normal And Abnormal Personality Traits Are Associated With Marital Satisfaction For Both Men And Women: An Actor–Partner Interdependence Model Analysis, Catherine B. Stroud, C. Emily Durbin, Seema D. Saigal, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders
Psychology Faculty Research and Publications
Research has demonstrated associations between relationship satisfaction and personality traits. Using the Actor–Partner Interdependence Model, we explored associations between self-reported relationship satisfaction in couples (n = 118) and various measures of normal and abnormal personality, including higher-order dimensions of PE/Extraversion, NE/Neuroticism, Constraint (CON), and their lower-order facets. We also examined gender differences and moderators of associations. Consistent with the Vulnerability Stress Adaptation Model, self- and partner-reported NE and PE were related to satisfaction, and their lower-order traits demonstrated differential associations with satisfaction. Further, abnormal personality traits specific to the interpersonal domain and personality disorder symptoms demonstrated effects. Relationship …

Kembalinya Subyek: Sosiologi Memaknai Kembali Multikulturalisme, Lucia Ratih Kusumadewi
Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi
The idea of modern society that has been dominated for long time by political idea (read: state) fails since state has lost her control over economy. The state loses as well control over her socio-cultural legitimacy while society became more plural. Sociologists in 80’s inspired by Tourianian’s idea, find that in an ‘ultra-modern’ society, the redefinition on the idea of society, modernity and rationality are inevitable and ‘the return of the Subject’ shall be a main agenda for further sociological analysis. In this context how multiculturalism might be construed? This article has been in attempt to explore the reconstitution of …

Neuronal pentraxin with chromo domain (NPCD) belongs to a family of neuronally-expressed pentraxin proteins thought to be involved in synaptic refinement and plasticity. One isoform of Npcd, neuronal pentraxin receptor (NPR), is a type-II transmembrane protein responsible for the clustering of related neuronal pentraxins 1 and 2. However, recently identified cytosolic NPCD isoforms with no known function were discovered through their interaction with the intracellular domain of a receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase PTPRO. PTPRO is a signaling molecule known to be involved in the development of the nervous system. Additionally, upregulated expression of neuronal pentraxins has been implicated in neuronal …

Exploration Into Human Polyandry: An Evolutionary Examination Of The Non-Classical Cases, Kathrine E. Starkweather
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
Polyandry has occurred all over the world, among human societies at all levels of social stratification, employing all types of economic strategies. While the classical cases that appear in Southeast Asia among stratified, agricultural societies have been thoroughly studied, very little has been written on the non-classical cases. This thesis surveys fifty-two non-classical cases of polyandry and investigates the conditions under which non-classical polyandry most often occurs. This thesis also tests the following five sets of hypotheses, which were derived from theories related to both classical and non-classical polyandry: the Imbalanced Sex Ratio Hypotheses; the Prolonged Male Absence Hypotheses; the …
