Analytical Solutions For Efficient Interpretation Of Single-Well Push-Pull Tracer Tests, Junqi Huang, John A. Christ, Mark N. Goltz Aug 2010

Analytical Solutions For Efficient Interpretation Of Single-Well Push-Pull Tracer Tests, Junqi Huang, John A. Christ, Mark N. Goltz

Faculty Publications

Single-well push-pull tracer tests have been used to characterize the extent, fate, and transport of subsurface contamination. Analytical solutions provide one alternative for interpreting test results. In this work, an exact analytical solution to two-dimensional equations describing the governing processes acting on a dissolved compound during a modified push-pull test (advection, longitudinal and transverse dispersion, first-order decay, and rate-limited sorption/partitioning in steady, divergent, and convergent flow fields) is developed. The coupling of this solution with inverse modeling to estimate aquifer parameters provides an efficient methodology for subsurface characterization. Synthetic data for single-well push-pull tests are employed to demonstrate the utility …

Pemoline And Tetramisole 'Positives' In English Racehorses Following Levamisole Administration, J. Gutierrez, R. L. Eisenberg, N. J. Koval, E. R. Armstrong, J. Tharappel, C. J. Hughes, Thomas Tobin Aug 2010

Pemoline And Tetramisole 'Positives' In English Racehorses Following Levamisole Administration, J. Gutierrez, R. L. Eisenberg, N. J. Koval, E. R. Armstrong, J. Tharappel, C. J. Hughes, Thomas Tobin

Veterinary Science Faculty Publications

Pemoline is a central nervous system stimulant that has been used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy in humans; its identification in horses could be considered evidence of attempts to influence performance. Two recent pemoline 'positives' in English racehorses led us to review the chemical relationships between tetramisole, levamisole, aminorex and pemoline. Pemoline is a simple oxidation product of aminorex, which has been shown in the United States and elsewhere to be an equine metabolite of levamisole. Based on the clear structural relationships between aminorex and pemoline, we conclude that levamisole can metabolise to pemoline in horses and that …

Is There An Optimal Management For Localized Prostate Cancer?, Jaspreet Singh, Edouard J. Trabulsi, Leonard G. Gomella Aug 2010

Is There An Optimal Management For Localized Prostate Cancer?, Jaspreet Singh, Edouard J. Trabulsi, Leonard G. Gomella

Department of Urology Faculty Papers

Widespread screening with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has led to a significant increase in the detection of early stage, clinically localized prostate cancer (CaP). Various treatment options for localized CaP are discussed in this review article including active surveillance, radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy, and cryotherapy. The paucity of high-level evidence adds a considerable amount of controversy when choosing the "optimal" intervention, for both the treating physician and the patient. The long time course of CaP intervention outcomes, combined with continuing modifications in treatments, further complicate the matter. Lacking randomized trials that compare treatment options, this review article attempts to summarize the …

Double-Strand Break Repair Pathways In Dna Structure-Induced Genetic Instability, Diem T. Kha Aug 2010

Double-Strand Break Repair Pathways In Dna Structure-Induced Genetic Instability, Diem T. Kha

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Genetic instability in mammalian cells can occur by many different mechanisms. In the absence of exogenous sources of DNA damage, the DNA structure itself has been implicated in genetic instability. When the canonical B-DNA helix is naturally altered to form a non-canonical DNA structure such as a Z-DNA or H-DNA, this can lead to genetic instability in the form of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) (1, 2). Our laboratory found that the stability of these non-B DNA structures was different in mammals versus Escherichia coli (E.coli) bacteria (1, 2). One explanation for the difference between these species may be a result …

The Role Of Tyrosine Phosphorylation In The Functions Of The Tumor Suppressor Gprc5a, Xiaofeng Lin Aug 2010

The Role Of Tyrosine Phosphorylation In The Functions Of The Tumor Suppressor Gprc5a, Xiaofeng Lin

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The retinoic acid inducible G protein coupled receptor family C group 5 type A (GPRC5A) is expressed preferentially in normal lung tissue but its expression is suppressed in the majority of human non-small cell lung cancer cell lines and tissues. This differential expression has led to the idea that GPRC5A is a potential tumor suppressor. This notion was supported by the finding that mice with a deletion of the Gprc5a gene develop spontaneous lung tumors. However, there are various tumor cell lines and tissue samples, including lung, that exhibit higher GPRC5A expression than normal tissues and some reports by other …

The Difference In Physiological Parameters Following An Exercise Intervention In Breast Cancer Survivors On A Single Chemotherapy Drug Versus Combination Chemotherapy Drugs, Micah John Foster Aug 2010

The Difference In Physiological Parameters Following An Exercise Intervention In Breast Cancer Survivors On A Single Chemotherapy Drug Versus Combination Chemotherapy Drugs, Micah John Foster

Master's Theses

Exercise has become an important part of cancer rehabilitation as the incidence of breast cancer is increasing and the mortality rate is decreasing. Breast cancer chemotherapy treatment induces a physical demand on the body while exercise counter balances symptoms of chemotherapy treatment. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects an exercise intervention has on breast cancer survivors who have received a single chemotherapy drug versus combination chemotherapy drugs. A secondary purpose was to determine any differences in chemotherapy categories. Participants were chosen that had single drug treatment (n = 34) and combination drug treatment (n = 20). …

The Effect Of Victim Status And System Threat On Rape Myth Acceptance, Kristine M. Chapleau Aug 2010

The Effect Of Victim Status And System Threat On Rape Myth Acceptance, Kristine M. Chapleau

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study examined how rape myths are used to protect the perpetrator, particularly high-status perpetrators. Participants read a date-rape scenario. The status of the victim and perpetrator were manipulated as well as the threat the victim posed to the perpetrator as depicted by whom the victim would tell about the rape. Participants with a strong system justification orientation reported lower rape myth acceptance when a low-status victim decided to tell no one about a high-status perpetrator raping her compared to when she decided to report him to the police. This suggests that rape myth acceptance is malleable and that the …

Arsenic In Drinking Water Causes Gene Expression Changes In The Liver Related To Inflammation And Metabolic Dysfunction And Accelerates Atherosclerosis In Apoe-/-Mice, Matthew R. Zajack Aug 2010

Arsenic In Drinking Water Causes Gene Expression Changes In The Liver Related To Inflammation And Metabolic Dysfunction And Accelerates Atherosclerosis In Apoe-/-Mice, Matthew R. Zajack

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Arsenic exposure in drinking-water is a significant worldwide health problem. It causes adverse human health effects, such as cancer, increases the risks for others such as cardiovascular disease, and accelerates atherosclerosis. In this study, we analyze arsenic-induced gene expression changes in the liver of ApoE-knockout mice given 49 ppm arsenic in drinking-water. We hypothesize chronic arsenic exposure accelerates atherosclerosis by disrupting liver homeostasis, causing aberrant gene expression changes. Networks revealed hubs on 3 stress-response MAP kinase pathways, ERK, JNK, and p38. Pathways revealed mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative phosphorylation enrichment from the gene set. Transcription factor binding site analysis revealed specific …

Population Structure Influences Sexual Conflict In Wild Populations Of Water Striders., Omar Tonsi Eldakar, Michael J. Dlugos, Galen P. Holt, David Sloan Wilson, John W. Pepper Aug 2010

Population Structure Influences Sexual Conflict In Wild Populations Of Water Striders., Omar Tonsi Eldakar, Michael J. Dlugos, Galen P. Holt, David Sloan Wilson, John W. Pepper

Biology Faculty Articles

In sexual conflict, aggressive males frequently diminish the long-term reproductive success of females in efforts to gain a short-term advantage over rival males. This short-term advantage can selectively favour high-exploitation males. However, just as the over-exploitation of resources can lead to local extinction, the over-exploitation of females in the form of harassment by aggressive males can yield similar consequences resulting in reduced female fecundity, increased female mortality and overall decline in mating activity. This outcome may often be prevented by selection acting at multiple levels of biological organization. Directional selection favouring aggressive exploitation within groups can be balanced by directional …

A Note On He’S Parameter-Expansion Method Of Coupled Van Der Pol–Duffing Oscillators, N. H. Sweilam, M. M. Khader Aug 2010

A Note On He’S Parameter-Expansion Method Of Coupled Van Der Pol–Duffing Oscillators, N. H. Sweilam, M. M. Khader

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper presents the analytical and approximate solutions of the coupled chaotic Van der Pol-Duffing systems, by using the He's parameter-expansion method (PEM). One iteration is sufficient to obtain a highly accurate solution, which is valid for the whole solution domain. From the obtained results, we can conclude that the suggest method, is of utter simplicity, and can be easily extended to all kinds of non-linear equations.

Modified Variational Iteration Method For Second Order Initial Value Problems, Fazhan Geng Aug 2010

Modified Variational Iteration Method For Second Order Initial Value Problems, Fazhan Geng

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we introduce a modified variational iteration method for second order initial value problems by transforming the integral of iteration process. The main advantages of this modification are that it can overcome the restriction of the form of nonlinearity term in differential equations and improve the iterative speed of conventional variational iteration method. The method is applied to some nonlinear second order initial value problems and the numerical results reveal that the modified method is accurate and efficient for second order initial value problems.

Genetic Analysis Of The Function Of The Drosophila Doublesex-Related Factor Dmrt93b, Diana O'Day Aug 2010

Genetic Analysis Of The Function Of The Drosophila Doublesex-Related Factor Dmrt93b, Diana O'Day

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

DMRT (Doublesex and Mab-3 related transcription factor) proteins generally associated with sexual differentiation in many organisms share a common DNA binding domain and are often expressed in reproductive tissues. Aside from doublesex, which is a central factor in the regulation of sex determination, Drosophila possesses three different dmrt genes that are of unknown function. Because the association with sexual differentiation and reproduction is not universal and some DMRT proteins have been found to play other developmental roles we chose to further characterize one of these Drosophila genes. We carried out genetic analysis of dmrt93B, which was previously found to be …

Defining The Role Of Il-15 Trans-Presentation By Distinct Cell-Types During The Development And Homeostasis Of Natural Killer And Invariant Natural Killer T Cells, Eliseo F. Castillo Aug 2010

Defining The Role Of Il-15 Trans-Presentation By Distinct Cell-Types During The Development And Homeostasis Of Natural Killer And Invariant Natural Killer T Cells, Eliseo F. Castillo

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The immuno-regulatory functions displayed by NK and iNKT cells have highlighted their importance as key lymphocytes involved in innate and adaptive immunity. Therefore, understanding the dynamics influencing the generation of NK and iNKT cells is extremely important. IL-15 has been shown to provide a critical signal throughout the development and homeostasis of NK and iNKT cells; however, the cellular source of IL-15 has remained unclear. In this investigation, I provide evidence that the cell-type providing IL-15 to NK and iNKT cells via trans-presentation is determined by the tissue site and the maturation status of NK and iNKT cells. For NK …

Thoracic Target Volume Delineation Using Various Maximum-Intensity Projection Computed To Mography Image Sets For Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, David A. Zamora Aug 2010

Thoracic Target Volume Delineation Using Various Maximum-Intensity Projection Computed To Mography Image Sets For Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy, David A. Zamora

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The motion of lung tumors during respiration makes the accurate delivery of radiation therapy to the thorax difficult because it increases the uncertainty of target position. The adoption of four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) has allowed us to determine how a tumor moves with respiration for each individual patient. Using information acquired during a 4D-CT scan, we can define the target, visualize motion, and calculate dose during the planning phase of the radiotherapy process. One image data set that can be created from the 4D-CT acquisition is the maximum-intensity projection (MIP). The MIP can be used as a starting point to …

Unique Functionality Of 22 Nt Mirnas In Triggering Rdr6-Dependent Sirna Biogenesis From Target Transcripts In Arabidopsis, Josh T. Cuperus, Alberto Carbonell, Noah Fahlgren, Hernan Garcia-Ruiz, Russell T. Burke, Atsushi Takeda, Christopher M. Sullivan, Sunny D. Gilbert, Taiowa A. Montgomery, James C. Carrington

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

RNA interference pathways may involve amplification of secondary siRNAs by RNA-dependent RNA polymerases. In plants, RDR6-dependent secondary siRNAs arise from transcripts targeted by some microRNA (miRNA). Here, Arabidopsis thaliana secondary siRNA from mRNA, and trans-acting siRNA, are shown to be triggered through initial targeting by 22 nt miRNA that associate with AGO1. In contrast to canonical 21 nt miRNA, 22 nt miRNA primarily arise from foldback precursors containing asymmetric bulges. Using artificial miRNA constructs, conversion of asymmetric foldbacks to symmetric foldbacks resulted in production of 21 nt forms of miR173, miR472 and miR828. Both 21 and 22 nt forms associated …

Calcium/Magnesium Ratio And Water Potential Effects On Forage Quality And Pectin Concentration, Rishi Prasad Aug 2010

Calcium/Magnesium Ratio And Water Potential Effects On Forage Quality And Pectin Concentration, Rishi Prasad

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Forage quality is an important parameter in animal nutrition and depends partly on soil fertility and moisture. Acidic soil pH and low soil moisture are known to decrease forage yield and quality. Liming is a common practice to correct the soil pH. Addition of lime not only improves the availability of nutrients but at the same time adds to the native calcium and magnesium present in the soil. Calcium and magnesium are identified as essential secondary macronutrients known to influence plant's physiological process. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effect of molar combinations of Ca:Mg ratio in …

Roosting Ecology Of Bats In A Disturbed Landscape, Joshua B. Johnson Aug 2010

Roosting Ecology Of Bats In A Disturbed Landscape, Joshua B. Johnson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In 2007 and 2008, I examined roost selection of forest-interior dwelling northern myotis (Myotis septentrionalis) maternity colonies in stands treated with prescribed fire (hereafter, fire) and in unburned (hereafter, control) stands on the Fernow Experimental Forest, West Virginia. Using radio telemetry, I tracked 36 female northern myotis to 69 roost trees; 25 in the fire treatment and 44 in the control treatment. Using logistic regression and an information-theoretic model selection approach, I determined that within the fire treatment, northern myotis maternity colonies were more likely to use cavity trees that were smaller in diameter, higher in crown class, and located …

Mitochondrial Dysfunction In The Diabetic Heart: Cardioprotection From A Novel Mitochondrially-Targeted Therapeutic, Erinne Rose Dabkowski Aug 2010

Mitochondrial Dysfunction In The Diabetic Heart: Cardioprotection From A Novel Mitochondrially-Targeted Therapeutic, Erinne Rose Dabkowski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Cardiovascular complications leading to heart failure are the leading cause of death amongst both type 1 and type 2 diabetic patients. Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation due to hyperglycemia and an enhanced fatty acid environment has been suggested to lead to mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondria are particularly susceptible to oxidative damage because the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) is the main site of ROS generation. Mitochondrial dysfunction is complicated by the fact that two spatially-distinct subpopulations of mitochondria reside in the heart. The subsarcolemmal mitochondria (SSM) are located at the cell periphery, while the interfibrillar mitochondria (IFM) situate along the myofibrils. …

Jimmy Choos Vs. Ariats: The Presentation Of Masculinity In The Online Sex Ads Of Men Who Have Sex With Men, Adam Thomas Babich Aug 2010

Jimmy Choos Vs. Ariats: The Presentation Of Masculinity In The Online Sex Ads Of Men Who Have Sex With Men, Adam Thomas Babich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The concept of masculinity should be understood in terms of its fluidity. One cannot say that there is a specific "white" masculinity or a specific "straight" masculinity; rather, masculinity is constantly changing. The inherent problem of defining masculinity has not deterred researches but has fueled a large and growing body of literature dedicated to studying masculinity's dynamic process of change. For a long time, gay men have been regarded as a group who is incapable of possessing masculinity; indeed according to hegemonic masculinity, gay men must be excluded. However, research has shown that gay men are rejecting this notion and …

Questioning The Frequency And Wisdom Of Compulsory Licensing For Pharmaceutical Patents, F. Scott Kieff, Richard A. Epstein Aug 2010

Questioning The Frequency And Wisdom Of Compulsory Licensing For Pharmaceutical Patents, F. Scott Kieff, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Many advocates for using compulsory licensing ("CL") for pharmaceutical patents in developing countries like Thailand rest their case in part on the purported use of CL in the United States. In this paper we take issue with that proposition on several grounds. As a theoretical matter, we argue that the basic presumption in favor of voluntary licenses for IP should apply in the international arena, in addition to the domestic one. In the international context, voluntary licenses are of special importance because they strengthen the supply chain for distributing pharmaceuticals and ease the government enforcement of safety standards. Next, this …

Carbon Dioxide: Our Newest Pollutant, Richard A. Epstein Aug 2010

Carbon Dioxide: Our Newest Pollutant, Richard A. Epstein

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Ever since the controversial Supreme Court decision in Massachusetts v. EPA, carbon dioxide has been treated as a pollutant under the Clean Air Act. This article argues that this decision was wrong as a matter of statutory construction and sound as a matter of sound social policy: the CAA is the wrong vehicle to deal with either carbon dioxide of global warming. On the present state of the evidence, the case for strong restraints on carbon dioxide emissions has not been made. The evidence in favor of the close linkage between carbon dioxide and global warming has not been clearly …
