Body Image Satisfaction In Infant And Pediatric Cardiac Transplant Recipients As Adolescents, Danusia Nedilskyj Sep 2010

Body Image Satisfaction In Infant And Pediatric Cardiac Transplant Recipients As Adolescents, Danusia Nedilskyj

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

With the long-term survival rate of infant and pediatric heart transplant recipients reaching as high as 85%, there is now a significant number of these youths entering adolescence. Although psychological factors thought to be associated with pediatric heart transplant have reached clearer delineation in the literature, few studies have been conducted. Given the emphasis on development typically seen in adolescence combined with the unique experience of receiving a heart transplant, factors such as body image, self-perception, stress and mood have emerged from the literature. As such, this study assessed psychosocial variables of body image satisfaction, self-concept, depression, and social stress …

Veterans Of The 1st Persian Gulf War: A Study Of Medically Unexplained Symptom Models, Alexis H. Collins Sep 2010

Veterans Of The 1st Persian Gulf War: A Study Of Medically Unexplained Symptom Models, Alexis H. Collins

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In 1990-1991, shortly after the Persian Gulf War, a number of veterans began complaining about a wide range of symptoms, the most common of which were; fatigue, headache, sleep disturbance, low mood, and memory loss. These symptoms were similar to those experienced by individuals with Medically Unexplained Illnesses such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and Somatoform Disorders. Utilizing structural equation modeling and data gathered from the Gulf War Veterans Health Questionnaire, this study attempted to determine whether symptoms experienced by veterans were best explained as individual items, discrete illnesses, or as a conglomeration of …

Risk For Developmental Delay In Non-Syndromic Craniosynostosis, Sharis Nazarian Sep 2010

Risk For Developmental Delay In Non-Syndromic Craniosynostosis, Sharis Nazarian

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Non-syndromic craniosynostosis is a craniofacial condition where there is a premature fusion of a calvarial suture. There are four subtypes of craniosynostosis, each one reflecting the suture that is fused (metopic, sagittal, coronal synostosis, and lambdoid synostosis). Research suggests that non-syndromic craniosynostosis is associated with an increased risk of developmental delay, behavioral problems, and learning disabilities. This was an archival study with 30 participants being treated at the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital Craniofacial Team Center. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between risk for developmental delay and type of craniosynostosis using the Bayley Infant Neurodevelopmental …

Convergent Validity Of Self Reported Physical Activity With A Seven Day Recall, Benjamin J. Silber Sep 2010

Convergent Validity Of Self Reported Physical Activity With A Seven Day Recall, Benjamin J. Silber

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Accurate assessment of physical activity is important to studies interested in the relationship between physical activity and other variables. Questionnaires are the only feasible means for large-scale sampling but such self-report measures require validation due to their inherent subjectivity. The Adventist Health Study-2 (AHS-2) survey includes exercise items that were validated in the present investigation. A calibration study examined self-reports of exercise with two phone calls to 1,000 participants in which an interview-assisted 7-day physical activity recall was completed by a random sample of AHS-2 participants. Inter-index correlations both within the survey and between the survey and the 7-day physical …

Splice Factor Sfrs6: Regulation By P53 And Effect On Il-24 Splicing, Erin L. Schmidt Sep 2010

Splice Factor Sfrs6: Regulation By P53 And Effect On Il-24 Splicing, Erin L. Schmidt

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Alternative splicing of RNA transcripts is emerging as a major mechanism for expanding the proteome. Splice pattern changes are found in numerous diseases and cancers, indicating the importance of tight control over this process. While the mechanism of splicing has been described in detail, it is less clear how a cell is able to modify its splicing patterns in response to different conditions. Our lab previously demonstrated that DNA damage can induce SFRS6, the gene coding for splicing factor SRp55, thereby leading to changes in the splicing patterns of several target genes related to survival and apoptosis. We also …

Assessing The Prevalence Of Inadequate Nutrient Intake Among Vegetarians And Non-Vegetarians Using The Estimated Average Requirement : Results From The Adventist Health Study-2 Calibration Study, Choon Chew Teo Sep 2010

Assessing The Prevalence Of Inadequate Nutrient Intake Among Vegetarians And Non-Vegetarians Using The Estimated Average Requirement : Results From The Adventist Health Study-2 Calibration Study, Choon Chew Teo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Studies have shown that vegetarians have lower risk of chronic diseases and longer lifespan. Yet when mean intake of vegetarians was compared with the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA), it was reported that vegetarians were inadequate in certain nutrients. With the recent establishment of the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR), the new reference standard for assessing adequacy of population intakes, nutrient adequacy of the vegetarian diet should now be reassessed.

Daily number of servings for each food group of the food guides have usually been theoretically computed based on intakes suggested in menus or cookbooks. We attempted to use the actual …

Comparison Of Non-Surgical And Surgical Endodontic Retreatment: A Systematic Review, Robert Corr Sep 2010

Comparison Of Non-Surgical And Surgical Endodontic Retreatment: A Systematic Review, Robert Corr

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Primary root canal therapy has been shown to be a predictable procedure with a high degree of success 1-4, however failures can occur after treatment. Treatment options for the preservation of teeth that have had previous endodontic treatment but demonstrate persistent disease include non-surgical (orthograde) or surgical (retrograde) endodontic retreatment, assuming the tooth is restorable, periodontally sound, and the patient desires to retain the tooth. The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the current available evidence to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes of nonsurgical with those of surgical endodontic retreatment. Methodology began with …

Microct Study Of Critical-Sized Defects Restored With A New Rhbmp-2 Carrier, Joanne S. Kim Sep 2010

Microct Study Of Critical-Sized Defects Restored With A New Rhbmp-2 Carrier, Joanne S. Kim

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Regenerating bone in critical-sized maxillofacial osseous defects remains a challenge. The utilization of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) to form new bone has been shown to be a promising alternative to autogenous bone grafts, and the development of a carrier matrix to effectively deliver the rhBMP-2 has been identified as the critical factor necessary for the successful clinical application of rhBMP-2. The objective of this study was to perform a microCT analysis to examine the density of reconstructed bone using different rhBMP-2 carriers in critical-sized defects.

Material and Methods: Critical-sized defects (approximately 2.5 cm) were created in the …

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder-Like Symptomatology In Pediatric Intensivists, Dina Gabriella Cuervo Sep 2010

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder-Like Symptomatology In Pediatric Intensivists, Dina Gabriella Cuervo

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Helping professionals, such as social workers, emergency first responders and medical personnel are susceptible to traumatic stress reactions through indirect exposure to trauma via the traumatized population whom they serve. This phenomenon, known as secondary traumatic stress (STS), mimicking the symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder, can have an impact on a provider’s work with his/her patient or have longer-term effects such as deciding to leave the profession. This study found that physicians’ level of job stress was the strongest predictor of STS and that this relationship was also influenced by resiliency, ego strength and attachment style. Individuals with higher levels …

Diagnosing And Treating Adhd: Discipline Differences, Lisa Marie Lliteras Sep 2010

Diagnosing And Treating Adhd: Discipline Differences, Lisa Marie Lliteras

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

According to Barkley (2005), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common reasons children are referred to mental health workers in the United States and is now one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders associated with childhood. The diagnostic criteria and labels for ADHD have changed over the last several decades, and with each change the prevalence rate for ADHD has increased (Wolraich & Baumgaertel, 1997). This increase in the prevalence of ADHD has led to a need for clinicians from different disciplines to assess and treat ADHD. As such, several guidelines from professional associations have been …

Some Realism About Punishment Naturalism (With Responses), Donald Braman, Dan M. Kahan, David A. Hoffman, Paul H. Robinson

University of Chicago Law Review

In this Article, we critique the increasingly prominent claims of Punishment Naturalism—the notion that highly nuanced intuitions about most forms of crime and punishment are broadly shared, and that this agreement is best explained by a particular form of evolutionary psychology. While the core claims of Punishment Naturalism are deeply attractive and intuitive, they are contradicted by a broad array of studies and depend on a number of logical missteps. The most obvious shortcoming of Punishment Naturalism is that it ignores empirical research demonstrating deep disagreements over what constitutes a wrongful act and just how wrongful a given act should …

Differential Regulation Of Immature Articular Cartilage Compressive Moduli And Poisson's Ratios By In Vitro Stimulation With Igf-1 And Tgf-Β1, Gregory M. Williams, Kristin J. Dills, Christian R. Flores, Michael E. Stender, Kevin M. Stewart, Lauren M. Nelson, Albert C. Chen, Koichi Masuda, Scott J. Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch, Robert L. Sah

Biomedical Engineering

Mechanisms of articular cartilage growth and maturation have been elucidated by studying composition-function dynamics during in vivo development and in vitro culture with stimuli such as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1). This study tested the hypothesis that IGF-1 and TGF-β1 regulate immature cartilage compressive moduli and Poisson’s ratios in a manner consistent with known effects on tensile properties. Bovine calf articular cartilage from superficial-articular (S) and middle-growth (M) regions were analyzed fresh or following culture in medium with IGF-1 or TGF-β1. Mechanical properties in confined (CC) and unconfined (UCC) compression, cartilage matrix composition, and explant …

Serine/threonine protein kinase 11 (STK11) and phosphatase tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN) link insulin sensitivity and metabolic signaling to inflammation and other hormonal factors and colorectal cancer. We evaluate genetic variation in nine genes in a candidate pathway as follows: STK11 (3 tagSNPs), PTEN (9 tagSNPs), FRAP1 (mTOR) (4 tagSNPs), TSC1 (14 tagSNPs), TSC2 (8 tagSNPs), Akt1 (2 tagSNPs), PIK3CA (7 tagSNPs), PRKAA1 (13 tagSNPs) and PRKAG2 (68 tagSNPs) in two population-based case-control studies of colon (n = 1574 cases, 1940 controls) and rectal (n = 91 cases, 999 controls) cancer. FRAP1, PRKAA1, PRKAG2 and TSC2 genes were …

The Global Impact Of Sutures Assessed In A Finite Element Model Of A Macaque Cranium, Qian Wang, Amanda L. Smith, David S. Strait, Barth Wright, Brian G. Richmond, Ian R. Grosse, Craig Byron, Uriel Zapata Sep 2010

The Global Impact Of Sutures Assessed In A Finite Element Model Of A Macaque Cranium, Qian Wang, Amanda L. Smith, David S. Strait, Barth Wright, Brian G. Richmond, Ian R. Grosse, Craig Byron, Uriel Zapata

Faculty and Staff Publications

The biomechanical significance of cranial sutures in primates is an open question because their global impact is unclear, and their material properties are difficult to measure. In this study, eight suture-bone functional units representing eight facial sutures were created in a finite element model of a monkey cranium. All the sutures were assumed to have identical isotropic linear elastic material behavior that varied in different modeling experiments, representing either fused or unfused sutures. The values of elastic moduli employed in these trials ranged over several orders of magnitude. Each model was evaluated under incisor, premolar, and molar biting conditions. Results …
