The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship of calcium concentration in seminal plasma on elephant semen quality including of volume, concentration, pH and percentage of progressive motility, dead sperm and abnormal morphology, respectively. Semen collection and evaluation were done in 9 elephants of Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, National Elephant Institute, Forest Industry Organization at Lampang. Calcium in seminal plasma was measured by using colorimetric method. Data were analyzed by using Linear Regression. The results revealed that amount of calcium in seminal plasma was negative correlated with only percentage of progressive motility (p<0.05). Ejaculates were separated into three groups based on their progressive motility percentage including of low, moderate and high-motile semen (0-5%, >5-40% and >50%, respectively) and …

A Biologically-Inspired Cognitive Agent Model Integrating Declarative Knowledge And Reinforcement Learning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Gee-Wah Ng Sep 2010

A Biologically-Inspired Cognitive Agent Model Integrating Declarative Knowledge And Reinforcement Learning, Ah-Hwee Tan, Gee-Wah Ng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The paper proposes a biologically-inspired cognitive agent model, known as FALCON-X, based on an integration of the Adaptive Control of Thought (ACT-R) architecture and a class of self-organizing neural networks called fusion Adaptive Resonance Theory (fusion ART). By replacing the production system of ACT-R by a fusion ART model, FALCON-X integrates high-level deliberative cognitive behaviors and real-time learning abilities, based on biologically plausible neural pathways. We illustrate how FALCON-X, consisting of a core inference area interacting with the associated intentional, declarative, perceptual, motor and critic memory modules, can be used to build virtual robots for battles in a simulated RoboCode …

Event Study Method For Validating Agent-Based Trading Simulations, Shih-Fen Cheng Sep 2010

Event Study Method For Validating Agent-Based Trading Simulations, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we introduce how one can validate an event-centric trading simulation platform that is built with multi-agent technology. The issue of validation is extremely important for agent-based simulations, but unfortunately, so far there is no one universal method that would work in all domains. The primary contribution of this paper is a novel combination of event-centric simulation design and event study approach for market dynamics generation and validation. In our event-centric design, the simulation is progressed by announcing news events that affect market prices. Upon receiving these events, event-aware software agents would adjust their views on the market …

Cancer is recognized as a serious health challenge both in the United States and throughout the world. While early detection and diagnosis of cancer leads to decreased mortality rates, current screening methods require significant time and costly equipment. Recently, increased levels of certain micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) in the blood have been linked to the presence of cancer. While blood-based biomarkers have been used for years in cancer detection, studies analyzing trace amounts of miRNAs in blood and serum samples are just the beginning. Recent developments in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) nanotechnology and DNA computing have shown that it is possible to …

The Impact Of Racial Metric Variation In The Os Coxae On The Morphological Assessment Of Sex, Ginesse A. Listi Sep 2010

The Impact Of Racial Metric Variation In The Os Coxae On The Morphological Assessment Of Sex, Ginesse A. Listi

Faculty Publications

This study examines whether sex determination based on morphological traits in the os coxae is impacted by racial quantitative variation. Nineteen traits were evaluated independently by two observers in 876 os coxae. Chi-square test was used on a random sample of 400 individuals to assess whether the distribution of correct sex assessment varied for white and black individuals based on each trait individually and all 19 traits collectively, as well as on inter-observer agreement in correct sex assessment. Results indicate that accuracy of sex assessment varied between white and black individuals in certain individual traits; however, accuracy was not impacted …

Women’S Health Disparities And Midwifery Care: Spotlight On Massachusetts, Dorothy Hiersteiner Sep 2010

Women’S Health Disparities And Midwifery Care: Spotlight On Massachusetts, Dorothy Hiersteiner

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

As a result of Massachusetts’ 2006 health insurance coverage law, there has been a significant decrease in the uninsurance rate for women of color. Access to and use of health care for all women in the Commonwealth has also increased. Despite these coverage and access gains, major racial/ethnic disparities in health conditions and outcomes still exist among women, especially in the use and quality of prenatal care, the occurrence of preterm and low birth weight births, and infant mortality rates. The proportion of Massachusetts births that were cesarean deliveries in 2007 was 8% higher than the national rate. Compared to …

Women’S Health Disparities And Midwifery Care: Spotlight On New Hampshire, Dorothy Hiersteiner

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

New Hampshire faces significant obstacles to serving the nearly 6% of the population living in medically underserved areas. In addition, many residents of New Hampshire are uninsured, limiting their access to vital medical care. According to 2007-8 data, the racial/ethnic breakdown of New Hampshire residents is: 1% African American/black, 2% Hispanic, 94% non-Hispanic white and 3% Other. In 2005, 5.9% of the total New Hampshire population was foreign born.1 Since 1996, New Hampshire has seen increases in low birth weight births, cesarean births2, and infant mortality with racial/ethnic disparities reflected in most maternal and infant indicators.

A Search For A Cure: One Step Closer To Eliminating Breast Cancer, Patricia A. Ellis, Julie O'Connor

New Science

In 2009, there were more than 194,000 new cases of breast cancer, and more than 40,000 deaths caused by this most common form of cancer among women in the United States. Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) positive breast cancer is one of the more aggressive forms of breast cancer and is prevalent in about one of every three cases of breast cancer. This protein is made in low levels by normal breast cells, but is produced in excessively high levels in HER2-positive breast cancer. In addition, HER2- positive tumors grow faster, recur more often than other breast tumors and …

Cerebral Palsy: Wayne State University Giving Hope In A Small (Nano) Way, Julie O'Connor

New Science

Cerebral palsy, a neurological disorder that appears in infancy or early childhood and permanently affects body movement and muscle coordination, affects 10,000 newborns yearly and 800,000 people overall in the U.S. It occurs as a result of injury to the developing brain that happens before birth or sometimes during the first few months or years of life. Conditions such as prematurity, maternal infections, placental abnormalities and infections such as meningitis or encephalitis that occur in the newborn period may result in brain injury producing cerebral palsy. A team of researchers from the College of Engineering, School of Medicine and the …

Places For Races: The White Supremacist Movement Imagines U.S. Geography, Barbara Perry, Randy Blazak

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Increasingly, scholars are acknowledging that racial and other forms of animus assume a spatial dimension. Not only does intercultural hostility take different forms depending on location, but so, too, does the concomitant bias-motivated violence imply “places for races.” The very intent and motive of hate crimes are grounded in the perceived need of perpetrators to defend carefully crafted boundaries. While these boundaries are largely cultural, they may also take on a real, physical form, at least from the perpetrator’s perspective. Nowhere is this more evident than in the geographical imagination of the White Supremacist movement. This paper will trace the …

Ability Of Plectranthus Spp. To Re-Green After Nitrogen Deficiency, Jazbaat K. Chahal Sep 2010

Ability Of Plectranthus Spp. To Re-Green After Nitrogen Deficiency, Jazbaat K. Chahal

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for plant growth and development. This is due to the reason that nitrogen is a key constituent of amino acids, nucleic acids, lipids and chlorophyll. Stress caused by nitrogen deficiency has a large impact on plant growth and development. In most plants, older leaves become chlorotic and eventually fall off if nitrogen stress is not relieved. Chlorophyll concentration is important to determine the nitrogen concentration in a plant as nitrogen is a constituent element of chlorophyll and also of various proteins that are a part of the photosynthetic apparatus. Cytokinins are said to mediate …

Negative Dielectrophoretic Capture Of Bacterial Spores In Food Matrices, Mehti Koklu, Seungkyung Park, Suresh D. Pillai, Ali Beskok Sep 2010

Negative Dielectrophoretic Capture Of Bacterial Spores In Food Matrices, Mehti Koklu, Seungkyung Park, Suresh D. Pillai, Ali Beskok

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

A microfluidic device with planar square electrodes is developed for capturing particles from high conductivity media using negative dielectrophoresis (n-DEP). Specifically, Bacillus subtilis and Clostridium sporogenes spores, and polystyrene particles are tested in NaCl solution (0.05 and 0.225 S/m), apple juice (0.225 S/m), and milk (0.525 S/m). Depending on the conductivity of the medium, the Joule heating produces electrothermal flow (ETF), which continuously circulates and transports the particles to the DEP capture sites. Combination of the ETF and n-DEP results in different particle capture efficiencies as a function of the conductivity. Utilizing 20 μm height DEP chambers, “almost complete” and …

Widespread Over-Expression Of The X Chromosome In Sterile F-1 Hybrid Mice, Jeffrey M. Good, Thomas Giger, Matthew D. Dean, Michael W. Nachman Sep 2010

Widespread Over-Expression Of The X Chromosome In Sterile F-1 Hybrid Mice, Jeffrey M. Good, Thomas Giger, Matthew D. Dean, Michael W. Nachman

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The X chromosome often plays a central role in hybrid male sterility between species, but it is unclear if this reflects underlying regulatory incompatibilities. Here we combine phenotypic data with genome-wide expression data to directly associate aberrant expression patterns with hybrid male sterility between two species of mice. We used a reciprocal cross in which F-1 males are sterile in one direction and fertile in the other direction, allowing us to associate expression differences with sterility rather than with other hybrid phenotypes. We found evidence of extensive over-expression of the X chromosome during spermatogenesis in sterile but not in fertile …

Distinct Macrophage Subpopulations Regulate Viral Encephalitis But Not Viral Clearance In The Cns, Christina D. Steel, Woong-Ki Kim, Larry Sanford, Laurie Wellman, Sandra Burnett, Nico Van Rooijen, Rochard P. Ciavarra

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Intranasal application of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) induces acute encephalitis characterized by a pronounced myeloid and T cell infiltrate. The role of distinct phagocytic populations on VSV encephalitis was therefore examined in this study. Ablation of peripheral macrophages did not impair VSV encephalitis or viral clearance from the brain, whereas, depletion of splenic marginal dendritic cells impaired this response and enhanced morbidity/mortality. Selective depletion of brain perivascular macrophages also suppressed this response without altering viral clearance. Thus, two anatomically distinct phagocytic populations regulate VSV encephalitis in a non-redundant fashion although neither population is essential for viral clearance in the CNS. …

Borrelia burgdorferi produces Erp outer surface proteins throughout mammalian infection, but represses their synthesis during colonization of vector ticks. A DNA region 5′ of the start of erp transcription, Operator 2, was previously shown to be essential for regulation of expression. We now report identification and characterization of a novel erp Operator 2-binding protein, which we named BpaB. erp operons are located on episomal cp32 prophages, and a single bacterium may contain as many as 10 different cp32s. Each cp32 family member encodes a unique BpaB protein, yet the three tested cp32-encoded BpaB alleles all bound to the same DNA …
