Insert Student Here: Why Content Area Constructions Of Literacy Matter For Pre-Service Teachers, Kristine Gritter

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article explores content area pre-service teacher beliefs about disciplinary knowledge, perceptions of effective content area teaching, and existing beliefs about how to integrate literacy into the content areas. Ten pre-service teachers across ten secondary content areas were asked to describe three important variables in secondary teaching: 1) the knowledge of their content area, 2) characteristics of a successful content area teacher, and 3) literacy activities that would optimally convey disciplinary knowledge to students. Content area responses to the first two prompts yielded comparatively static, teacher-centered notions of knowledge and teaching. However, responses to the third prompt indicated at least …

U.S. Participation In International Health Treaties, Commitments, Partnerships And Other Agreements, Jennifer Kates, Rebecca L. Katz

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The U.S. government's role in global health is long-standing and multifaceted. While primarily involving directly funding and operating programs in low- and middle-income countries, it also includes participation in international treaties, commitments, partnerships, and other multilateral agreements that address or encompass health. Such agreements serve numerous purposes including establishing political and legal commitments, formalizing international relationships, and coordinating roles and responsibilities in an increasingly complex and globalized and interconnected world. The role of the U.S. in international agreements has gained new attention in the Obama Administration, which has stated an intention to reinvigorate multilateral engagement and international partnerships on health …

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Liming has been used to mitigate effects of acidic deposition in forest ecosystems. This study was designed to examine the effects of calcium (Ca) supply on the spatial patterns and the relations between soil and soil solution chemistry in a base-poor forest watershed. Watershed 1 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire, USA was experimentally treated with wollastonite (CaSiO3) in October, 1999. Exchangeable Ca (Ex-Ca), soil pHs (in 0.01 M CaCl2), effective cation exchange capacity (CECe), and effective base saturation (BSe) increased, while exchangeable acidity (Ex-Acid) decreased …

Modeled Nitrogen Loading To Narragansett Bay: 1850 To 2015, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Steven P. Hamburg, Donald Pryor Sep 2010

Modeled Nitrogen Loading To Narragansett Bay: 1850 To 2015, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur, Steven P. Hamburg, Donald Pryor

All Materials

Nutrient loading to estuaries with heavily populated watersheds can have profound ecological consequences. In evaluating policy options for managing nitrogen (N), it is helpful to understand current and historic spatial loading patterns to the system. We modeled N inputs to Narragansett Bay from 1850 to 2000, using data on population, human waste disposal, livestock, fertilizer, and atmospheric deposition. We found that total N loading to the bay increased 250% from 1850 to 2000, and 80% from 1900 to 2000. Loading to the upper bay increased far more than that to the lower bay, and the most important source shifted from …

Effects Of Bubbles And Sea Spray On Air–Sea Exchange In Hurricane Conditions, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas Sep 2010

Effects Of Bubbles And Sea Spray On Air–Sea Exchange In Hurricane Conditions, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The lower limit on the drag coefficient under hurricane force winds is determined by the break-up of the air–sea interface due to Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and formation of the two-phase transition layer consisting of sea spray and air bubbles. As a consequence, a regime of marginal stability develops. In this regime, the air–sea drag coefficient is determined by the turbulence characteristics of the two-phase transition layer. The upper limit on the drag coefficient is determined by the Charnock-type wave resistance. Most of the observational estimates of the drag coefficient obtained in hurricane conditions and in laboratory experiments appear to lie between …

Asian Adoptees And Post-Adoption Services In Massachusetts: Data From Providers And Reflections From Adult Adoptees, Nathan James Bae Kupel

Institute for Asian American Studies Publications

In the summer of 2009, the Institute for Asian American Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston in consultation with Boston Korean Adoptees, Inc. (BKA), commenced a project aimed at documenting post-adoption services and programs available to Asian adoptees, principally Korean, in Massachusetts and assessing their content and relevance. In the first part of the project, a questionnaire was sent to providers of post-adoption services and program currently available requesting information about their services—number, content, clientele, resources, and staffing. In addition providers were asked to comment on the frequency of requests for services and on challenges faced in offering them. …

Identification Of Thioaptamer Ligand Against E-Selectin: Potential Application For Inflamed Vasculature Targeting., Aman P Mann, Anoma Somasunderam, René Nieves-Alicea, Xin Li, Austin Hu, Anil K Sood, Mauro Ferrari, David G Gorenstein, Takemi Tanaka

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Active targeting of a drug carrier to a specific target site is crucial to provide a safe and efficient delivery of therapeutics and imaging contrast agents. E-selectin expression is induced on the endothelial cell surface of vessels in response to inflammatory stimuli but is absent in the normal vessels. Thus, E-selectin is an attractive molecular target, and high affinity ligands for E-selectin could be powerful tools for the delivery of therapeutics and/or imaging agents to inflamed vessels. In this study, we identified a thiophosphate modified aptamer (thioaptamer, TA) against E-selectin (ESTA-1) by employing a two-step selection strategy: a recombinant protein-based …

Extreme Data Mining: Inference From Small Datasets, Răzvan Andonie Sep 2010

Extreme Data Mining: Inference From Small Datasets, Răzvan Andonie

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Neural networks have been applied successfully in many fields. However, satisfactory results can only be found under large sample conditions. When it comes to small training sets, the performance may not be so good, or the learning task can even not be accomplished. This deficiency limits the applications of neural network severely. The main reason why small datasets cannot provide enough information is that there exist gaps between samples, even the domain of samples cannot be ensured. Several computational intelligence techniques have been proposed to overcome the limits of learning from small datasets.

We have the following goals: i. To …

Insterstitial Exclusivities After Association For Molecular Pathology, Mary Mitchell, Dana A. Remus Sep 2010

Insterstitial Exclusivities After Association For Molecular Pathology, Mary Mitchell, Dana A. Remus

Michigan Law Review First Impressions

The high profile cases Bilski v. Kappos and Association for Molecular Pathology v. United States Patent and Trademark Office have renewed public debate about the proper scope of patentable subject matter. The subject matter inquiry has traditionally been treated as a threshold inquiry in patent law, serving a gate-keeping function by defining the types of inventions that are eligible for patent protection. The Patent Office and courts have approached the subject matter inquiry both by determining whether an invention falls into a statutory category-processes, machines, manufactures, or compositions of matter-as well as by determining whether an invention falls into a …

Moving Beyond Citation Analysis: How Surveys And Interviews Enhance, Enrich, And Expand Your Research Findings, Susann Devries, Robert Kelly, Paula M. Storm

Faculty Scholarship - University Library

A traditional mixed methods research model of citation analysis, a survey, and interviews was selected to determine if the Bruce T. Halle Library at Eastern Michigan University owned the content that faculty cited in their research, if the collection was being utilized, and what library services the faculty used. The combination of objective data gleaned from the citation analysis and survey coupled with the personal, in-depth information gained from the interviews was instrumental in increasing the value of the study for its use in collection management decisions, and showed how effectual the services and collection are in supporting the research …

Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study involved the recruitment of 539 pregnant women from a Dublin maternity hospital. Following application of exclusion criteria, 450 mothers were followed up at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum. Quantitative data on folic acid use, as well as mothers’ smoking and alcohol consumption patterns during pregnancy were collected from the antenatal questionnaire. …

The Effectiveness Of Vertebrate Passage And Prevention Structures: A Study Of Boeckman Road In Wilsonville, Catherine E. De Rivera, Leslie L. Bliss-Ketchum Sep 2010

The Effectiveness Of Vertebrate Passage And Prevention Structures: A Study Of Boeckman Road In Wilsonville, Catherine E. De Rivera, Leslie L. Bliss-Ketchum

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

One of the most obvious impacts roads have on the natural world is direct mortality to individual animals that attempt to cross roads. A less obvious but likely more important impact of roads on many species is habitat fragmentation. The ability for individuals to travel between subpopulations is the key to genetic diversity as well as ultimately the survival of the species. Considering these impacts and management goals to increase habitat connectivity, increased attention has been given to creating road design that reduces wildlife collisions. Most studies, however, have been in other countries or regions and most focus on connectivity …

Landfills In Malaysia: Past, Present And Future, Shahul Hamid Fauziah, Pariatamby Agamuthu

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

In Malaysia, the absence of an integrated waste management system resulted with more than 10.40 million tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) being disposed off into landfills annually. This highlights the importance of landfills in MSW management in Malaysia. However, sustainable landfilling technology is yet to be achieved. This paper deliberates the scenarios of landfilling in Malaysia. Past and present status is thoroughly discussed while future prospects will be scrutinized. During the 1970s, the disposal sites were small and mere open-dumping grounds to cater small communities. With the population expansion in the 80s a national program was developed to manage …

Handling The Perceptual Politics Of Identity In Great Expectations, Peter J. Capuano Sep 2010

Handling The Perceptual Politics Of Identity In Great Expectations, Peter J. Capuano

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Historicizing hands in the context of contemporary discourse allows us to evaluate how this particular part of the body became a site where scientists and novelists alike could re-imagine “progress” and transformation. In the world of Great Expectations, those who fail to adapt and change never truly make any progress, and Dickens has some fun with this idea as he concludes the novel. While people like Pumblechook conspicuously offer “the same fat five fingers” in the text’s beginning and its end, Joe, over the same course of time, develops not only his laboring hand but his writing one as …

Sensitivity Of Geoelectrical Measurements To The Presence Of Bacteria In Porous Media, Gamal Z. Abdel Aal, Estella A. Atekwana, Silvia Rossbach, D. Dale Werkema

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigated the sensitivity of low-frequency electrical measurements (0.1-1000 Hz) to (1) microbial cell density, (2) live and dead cells, and (3) microbial attachment onto mineral surfaces of clean quartz sands and iron oxide-coated sands. Three strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 (wild type and rhlA and pilA mutant) with different motility and attachment properties were used. Varying concentrations of both live and dead cells of P. aeruginosa wild type in sand columns showed no effect on the real conductivity component (σ′). However, the imaginary conductivity component (σ″) increased linearly with increasing concentrations of live cells in sand columns, whereas minimal …

Is Criminology Moving Toward A Paradigm Shift?: Evidence From A Survey Of The American Society Of Criminology, Jonathon A. Cooper, Anthony Walsh, Lee Ellis

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

Ideology forms and colors our attitudes and values in ways that lead to a tendency to accept or reject data according to how well or how poorly they cohere with that ideology. Previous research has suggested that the ideological divide in criminology is between criminologists who focus on strictly environmentalist theories that give short shrift to individual differences, and those who focus on individual differences and are favorably disposed to the biological sciences (Wright & Miller, 1998; Walsh & Ellis, 2004). The former tend to be radicals and liberals and the latter tend to be conservatives and moderates, although there …
