Process Characterization Of The Reactive-Ion Etching Of Borosilicate Glass For Microfluidic Channels, Ann Christine Huang Sep 2010

Process Characterization Of The Reactive-Ion Etching Of Borosilicate Glass For Microfluidic Channels, Ann Christine Huang

Master's Theses

The ability to work with small amounts of fluids is an emerging technology that can greatly benefit the biomedical industry, diagnostics, and society as a whole. Typically, these microfluidic devices are fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Although it is optically clear, relatively inert, and easy to manipulate, PDMS does have its limitations. These include its tendency to swell when it comes in contact with certain chemicals and its hydrophobicity, which makes it difficult to analyze aqueous samples. Glass is an alternative material that addresses both issues. Etching is used to create these channels in glass. Wet etching procedures are typically isotropic …

Fighting Cancer With Folate: Investigating The Link Between Nutrients And Disease, Amy Oprean Sep 2010

Fighting Cancer With Folate: Investigating The Link Between Nutrients And Disease, Amy Oprean

New Science

Over the past decade, a growing body of literature has emerged suggesting that nutrients play an important role in regulating gene expression, particularly as it relates to the development of disease. Ahmad Heydari, Ph.D., professor of nutrition and food science, is at the forefront of this growing field with his investigation of the link between folic acid and gastrointestinal cancer prevention and treatment. “Powerful developments in genetics research have uncovered the potential of nutrients in controlling gene expression and even preventing DNA damage,” Heydari said. “In terms of cancer, a disease caused primarily from DNA damage, the potential for improvements …

Epilepsy At Every Angle: A Systems Biology Approach To A Cure, Amy Oprean

New Science

Caused by birth trauma, malformation, stroke, brain tumor or head injury and affecting as much as 1 percent of the population, epilepsy is one of the least understood human disorders in the most complicated of organs – the brain. Groundbreaking work to unlock the disease’s cure is in motion in the lab of Jeffrey Loeb, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of neurology, member of the WSU/DMC Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and associate director of the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics in the School of Medicine. By applying a systems biology approach to the study of human epileptic brain tissue, Loeb and …

The Improbability Of Meaningful Climate Change Regulation: A Constructivist Understanding Of The Global Commons And The Need For U.S. Leadership, Stacey Valentine Sep 2010

The Improbability Of Meaningful Climate Change Regulation: A Constructivist Understanding Of The Global Commons And The Need For U.S. Leadership, Stacey Valentine

Washington and Lee Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment

Climate change is a topic that permeates today’s scientific, political, and social discourse. It is a term that is both widely known and hotly debated across the country and across the globe. While an ever-increasing majority of the scientific and political realms has come to the conclusion that meaningful climate change regulation is necessary to prevent negative repercussions across the globe, there is little consensus on what that regulation should look like or how to bring it about. The nature of greenhouse gases, or GHGs, makes international cooperation a must if the world hopes to prevent and avoid the experts’ …

Chlorella variabilis NC64A, a unicellular photosynthetic green alga (Trebouxiophyceae), is an intracellular photobiont of Paramecium bursaria and a model system for studying virus/algal interactions. We sequenced its 46-Mb nuclear genome, revealing an expansion of protein families that could have participated in adaptation to symbiosis. NC64A exhibits variations in GC content across its genome that correlate with global expression level, average intron size, and codon usage bias. Although Chlorella species have been assumed to be asexual and nonmotile, the NC64A genome encodes all the known meiosis-specific proteins and a subset of proteins found in flagella. We hypothesize that Chlorella …

The Development Of Environmental Governance Regimes: A Chinese-Inspired Reconstruction, Roda Mushkat Sep 2010

The Development Of Environmental Governance Regimes: A Chinese-Inspired Reconstruction, Roda Mushkat

Washington and Lee Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment

The challenge of protecting the biosphere has both salient academic and policy dimensions. On the academic side, persistent efforts have been made in the field of socio-legal studies to enhance the understanding of the complex processes involved, in the domestic arena and on the international front, in the formation and transformation of the elaborate institutional arrangements designed to contribute to this goal. The scholars engaged in those efforts have pursued divergent paths, but one school of thought has moved decisively to the forefront. China’s experience does not cast doubt on its relevance, or even prominence, yet it suggests that multi-pronged …

Background: Molecular imaging of dopaminergic parameters has contributed to the dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia, expanding our understanding of pathophysiology, clinical phenomenology and treatment. Our aim in this study was to compare 18F-fallypride binding potential BPND in a group of patients with schizophrenia-spectrum illness vs. controls, with a particular focus on the cortex and thalamus. Methods: We acquired 18F-fallypride positron emission tomography images on 33 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder (28 with schizophrenia; 5 with schizoaffective disorder) and 18 normal controls. Twenty-four patients were absolutely neuroleptic naïve and nine were previously medicated, although only four had a lifetime neuroleptic exposure of …

Soil-Crop Dynamic Depth Response Determined From Tdr Of A Corn Silage Field Compared To Emi Measurements, Bryan L. Woodbury, Roger A. Eigenberg, John A. Nienaber, Mindy J. Spiehs Sep 2010

Soil-Crop Dynamic Depth Response Determined From Tdr Of A Corn Silage Field Compared To Emi Measurements, Bryan L. Woodbury, Roger A. Eigenberg, John A. Nienaber, Mindy J. Spiehs

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

Electromagnetic induction (EMI) techniques have been used to monitor bulk seasonal soil-crop apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) dynamics. Interpreting this information can be complicated by changes in the soil profile such as water content or nutrient leaching. Time domain reflectometry (TDR) measures localized soil EC; therefore, TDR can provide clarification to where in the soil profile the EC changes are taking place. The objective of this study was to determine whether surface or deep EC changes were driving the response measured by EMI during the crop season of a field amended with animal manure. Results indicate that seasonal soil-crop EC dynamics …

Using Student-Generated Uv-Induced Escherichia Coli Mutants In A Directed Inquiry Undergraduate Genetics Laboratory, Frank G. Healy, Kevin D. Livingstone

Biology Faculty Research

We report a thematic sequence of directed inquiry-based labs taking students from bacterial mutagenesis and phenotypic identification of their own self-created mutant, through identification of mutated genes by biochemical testing, to verification of mutant alleles by complementation, and finally to mutant allele characterization by DNA sequence analysis. The lab utilizes UV mutagenesis with wild-type Escherichia coli and a UV-sensitive isogenic derivative optimized for undergraduate use. The labs take advantage of the simplicity of E. coli in a realistic genetic investigation using safe UV irradiation methods for creation and characterization of novel mutants. Assessment data collected over three offerings of the …

Evaluation Of The Recreational Marron Fishery Against Environmental Change And Human Interaction: Final Frdc Report – Project No. 2003/027, Martin De Graaf, Stephen Beatty, Brett M. Molony Sep 2010

Evaluation Of The Recreational Marron Fishery Against Environmental Change And Human Interaction: Final Frdc Report – Project No. 2003/027, Martin De Graaf, Stephen Beatty, Brett M. Molony

Fisheries Research Reports

The distribution of marron in the southwest of Australia has seen many changes since European settlement. Reconstructions of their range from historical records suggested that marron inhabited the waters between the Harvey River and Denmark River. Due to translocation, their range has expanded as far north as the Hutt River and as far east as Esperance. Although at present marron still exist in all the original rivers within the southwest, their distribution within these rivers has contracted. Poor water quality, salinity, low rainfall and environmental degradation in the upper and lower reaches have restricted marron populations.

Making Ecodistricts Concepts And Methods For Advancing Sustainability In Neighborhoods, Ethan Seltzer, Timothy W. Smith, Joseph Cortright, Ellen M. Bassett, Vivek Shandas

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

This report is about how developing "EcoDistricts" in Portland can result in more sustainable neighborhoods and a more sustainable city. With generous funding from the Bullitt Foundation in Seattle, we have been able to take a deeper look into core concepts underlying the notion of pursuing citywide sustainability through neighborhood-scale action. The question becomes: What needs to be done to enable communities to self-manage their resource using behavior by creating community-inspired interventions that change relationships between people and between people and place? To answer these questions and to contribute to the emerging practice of EcoDistrict formation and development, what follows …
