Activated macrophages, via the secretion of pro-angiogenic factors, modulate the angiogenic response to inflammation. Several of these factors, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), are encoded by inherently unstable mRNA transcripts containing AU-rich elements (AREs) in their 3' untranslated region. During stress events, the half-lives of these mRNAs must be prolonged to allow for significant protein production and an adequate angiogenic response. This laboratory has demonstrated that engagement of the β-integrin receptor, LFA-1, leads to stabilization of ARE-bearing mRNAs in T lymphocytes through a nuclear-to-cytoplasmic translocation of the RNA-binding protein, HuR. Here, we address whether β-integrin engagement stabilizes VEGF mRNA …

Academic Performance, Persistence, And Degree Completion Of Associate In Arts Degree Recipients Transferring To A Four-Year Multi-Campus Institution, Saul Reyes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study assessed if there were differences in the academic performance, persistence, and degree completion for Associate in Arts transfer students in selected majors who enrolled in the different campuses of a multi-campus university. This causal comparative study analyzed historical student enrollment data from a large, urban, public, research university. Multiple and logistic regression techniques were used to simultaneously control for important independent variables identified in the literature. Variables that were significant (p < .05) for at least one of the three dependent variables included campus, major, community college GPA, gender, and ethnicity. Significant campus differences were found in academic performance, but not for persistence or degree completion. Significant differences by major were reported for academic performance, persistence, and degree completion.

Microbialites From The Freshwater System Of Cuatro Ciénegas, Mexico: Genomic, Molecular Organic, And Stable Isotopic Perspectives, Anthony G. Nitti
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Modern microbialites are carbonate-precipitating microbial mats and
represent the closest living analogues to ancient stromatolites. These ancient
carbonate formations are the oldest fossil evidence of life on Earth; however, our
comprehension of their relationship to early earth ecosystems relies heavily on
understanding the formation of modern microbialites. Research regarding these
formation processes has suggested that chemical constraints of CaCO
3
precipitation vary on sub-millimeter spatial scales within the living microbial
community. In an attempt to shed light on the importance of these chemical
microenvironments, this study focused on understanding the spatial distribution
of the organisms and processes involved in the …

Plasma Membrane Ca2+-Atpases: Targets Of Oxidative Stress In Brain Aging And Neurodegeneration, Asma Zaidi
Plasma Membrane Ca2+-Atpases: Targets Of Oxidative Stress In Brain Aging And Neurodegeneration, Asma Zaidi
Faculty and Staff Publications
The plasma membrane Ca(2+)-ATPase (PMCA) pumps play an important role in the maintenance of precise levels of intracellular Ca(2+) [Ca(2+)](i), essential to the functioning of neurons. In this article, we review evidence showing age-related changes of the PMCAs in synaptic plasma membranes (SPMs). PMCA activity and protein levels in SPMs diminish progressively with increasing age. The PMCAs are very sensitive to oxidative stress and undergo functional and structural changes when exposed to oxidants of physiological relevance. The major signatures of oxidative modification in the PMCAs are rapid inactivation, conformational changes, aggregation, internalization from the plasma membrane and proteolytic degradation. PMCA …

Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2009 : Final Report, Frederick T. Short
Eelgrass Distribution In The Great Bay Estuary For 2009 : Final Report, Frederick T. Short
PREP Reports & Publications
Eelgrass in the Great Bay Estuary in 2009 was once again present only in Great Bay itself and in Portsmouth Harbor. For the second year in a row, there was no eelgrass in Little Bay or in the Piscataqua River. In 2009, there was a continued loss of eelgrass biomass in Great Bay; there has been a 66.4% loss of biomass in Great Bay since 1996 and distribution is 30% less than in 1996. Although eelgrass distribution in Great Bay itself increased between 2008 and 2009, primarily due to continued expansion from natural seeding of bare areas, the Bay’s eelgrass …

Weakly Positioned Nucleosomes Enhance The Transcriptional Competency Of Chromatin, Yaakov Belch, Jingyi Yang, Yang Liu, Sridhar A. Malkaram, Rong Liu, Jean-Jack M. Riethoven, Istvan Ladunga
Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications
Background: Transcription is affected by nucleosomal resistance against polymerase passage. In turn, nucleosomal resistance is determined by DNA sequence, histone chaperones and remodeling enzymes. The contributions of these factors are widely debated: one recent title claims ‘‘… DNA-encoded nucleosome organization…’’ while another title states that ‘‘histone-DNA interactions are not the major determinant of nucleosome positions.’’ These opposing conclusions were drawn from similar experiments analyzed by idealized methods. We attempt to resolve this controversy to reveal nucleosomal competency for transcription.
Methodology/Principal Findings: To this end, we analyzed 26 in vivo, nonlinked, and in vitro genome-wide nucleosome maps/replicates by new, rigorous …
Human Tissue Engineered Small Diameter Blood Vessels, Melissa Suen Arief
Human Tissue Engineered Small Diameter Blood Vessels, Melissa Suen Arief
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The engineering of human vascular grafts is an intense area of study since there is crucial need for alternatives to native vein or artery for vascular surgery. This current study sought to prove that a tissue engineered blood vessel (TEBV) 1mm in diameter could be developed from human smooth muscle cells and that endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) could be cultured and used to endothelialize these grafts. This project had four specific aims: the isolation and characterization of EPCs, the seeding of a novel scaffold with EPCs and exposure to physiologic shear stress in vitro, the development of TEBV from human …

The Lace Bug Cochlochila Bullita (Stål) (Heteroptera: Tingidae), A Potential Pest Of Orthosiphon Stamineus Bentham (Lamiales: Lamiaceae) In Malaysia, Ahmad Said Sajap, Tan Li Peng
Insecta Mundi
Orthosiphon stamineus Bentham, a medicinal plant in the family Lamiaceae, is used to make a well known herbal tea in many countries including Malaysia. Since its establishment as an important cash crop, the herb has been relatively free from any serious insect problems until recently. In Selangor, Malaysia we observed the herb heavily infested by the lace bug Cochlochila bullita Stål (Heteroptera: Tingidae). This is the first record of its occurrence in Malaysia and also the first record on the host plant, O. stamineus. The lace bug damages the host plant by piercing and sucking young leaves and shoots, …

A State Record For The Oconee Scorpionfly, Panorpa Oconee Byers (Mecoptera: Panorpidae), In Florida, Louis A. Somma
Insecta Mundi
I provide the first state record for the Oconee scorpionfly, Panorpa oconee Byers, from Putnam County, Florida. This is the southernmost record for P. oconee, extends its range 321 km south of its known distribution and, if valid, adds a seventh described species of panorpid, and twelfth mecopteran, indigenous to Florida.
