Annual Sediment Retention And Hydraulic Residence Time Variability In A Riverine Wetland Receiving Unregulated Inflow From Agricultural Runoff, Randall W. Holloway

The ability of a wetland to treat nonpoint source pollution is in part a function of its hydraulic residence time and physical trapping of sediment. Natural hydrologic variability of unregulated inflows to natural and restored riverine wetlands causes variability in hydraulic residence time and associated sediment retention functions. This study quantified the sediment retention and hydraulic residence time variation in a self-restoring riverine wetland receiving unregulated stormwater inflow from an agricultural watershed. Elkhorn Slough, an estuary affected by nonpoint source pollution in Monterey County, California, lies immediately downstream of the 22 ha wetland site. Two stream gages monitored hydrology at …

An inquiry that seeks truth by accepting only natural answers excludes the possibility of the sacred or supernatural, building a wall that forecloses a complete exploration for the truth it seeks. Without analysis, critics dismiss sources presenting supernatural explanations, and those who believe sacred works have no factual foundation accept without investigation any popular theory that appears attractive. The rules of evidence expressly seek truth, wherever it lies. Noted legal scholar Simon Greenleaf used evidentiary principles to demonstrate the factual credibility of the Gospels in his Testimony of the Evangelists. Reproductive Isolation And Hybridization Dynamics In Threatened Caribbean Acroporid Corals, Nicole D. Fogarty

Oceanography Faculty Theses and Dissertations

The Caribbean corals, Acropora palmata and A. cervicornis, are abundant in fossil records but have recently undergone drastic declines primarily as a result of disease. Acropora prolifera, a hybrid of these species, has no fossil record and was previously considered rare and to occupy nonparental habitats. Now, hybrids have equivalent or greater abundance than the parental species and have expanded into the parental habitat at some sites. Previous molecular studies have demonstrated regional variability in unidirectional introgression of A. palmata genes into A. cervicornis. Coxiella burnetii is the bacterial agent of Q fever in humans. Acute Q fever generally manifests as a flu-like illness and is typically self-resolving. In contrast, chronic Q fever usually presents with endocarditis and is often life-threatening without appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Unfortunately, available options for the successful treatment of chronic Q fever are both limited and protracted (>18 months). Pentamidine, an RNA splice inhibitor used to treat fungal and protozoal infections, was shown to reduce intracellular growth of Coxiella by ca. 73% at a concentration of 1 microM (ca. 0.6 microg/mL) compared with untreated controls, with no detectable toxic …

Increased forest density resulting from decades of fire exclusion is often perceived as the leading cause of historically aberrant, severe, contemporary wildfires and insect outbreaks documented in some fire-prone forests of the western United States. Based on this notion, current U. S. forest policy directs managers to reduce stand density and restore historical conditions in fire-excluded forests to help minimize high-severity disturbances. Historical logging, however, has also caused widespread change in forest vegetation conditions, but its long-term effects on vegetation structure and composition have never been adequately quantified. Why, in particular, are human beings, whose very survival depends on obtaining true information, so drawn to fictional narratives? After all, virtually every human culture reveres some form of storytelling. Might there be an evolutionary reason behind our species’ need for stories? Cary Miller’s Ogimaag: Anishinaabeg Leadership, 1760–1845 reexamines Ojibwe leadership practices and processes in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At the end of the nineteenth century, anthropologists who had studied Ojibwe leadership practices developed theories about human societies and cultures derived from the perceived Ojibwe model. Scholars believed that the Ojibwes typified an anthropological “type” of Native society, one characterized by weak social structures and political institutions. Miller counters those assumptions by looking at the historical record and examining how leadership was distributed and enacted long before scholars arrived on the scene. Miller uses research produced by Ojibwes themselves, …

Using Facebook Within A Geriatric Pharmacotherapy Course, Erica L. Estus

Objective. To evaluate using an Internet-based social networking site within an elective geriatric pharmacotherapy course.

Design. Thirty pharmacy students enrolled in a geriatric pharmacotherapy elective course were invited to join a closed Facebook (Facebook Inc, Palo Alto, CA) group to enhance communication among students and faculty members within the course. Creating a discussion board was the primary activity in the course. Each week, 3 students were assigned to post a healthy aging topic, and other students in the class were expected to post their comments and reactions. The healthy aging topics also were discussed during class.

It is unbelievable how quickly time flies when you’re having fun. We have now been editing BRN for 8.5 years, and we are still speaking to one another! Over this time, numerous changes have occurred in our editorial procedures. We started our editing positions working in adjoining offices at the University of Florida, yelling back and forth to one another; we now work 2,200 miles from each other, communicating on a regular basis via e-mail. We started off using a homemade database combined with a complicated e-mail filing system; we now use ScholarOne’s Manuscript Central, a web-based system easily accessible …

Coxeter Groups And Asynchronous Cellular Automata, Matthew Macauley, Henning S. Mortveit

Publications

The dynamics group of an asynchronous cellular automaton (ACA) relates properties of its long term dynamics to the structure of Coxeter groups. The key mathematical feature connecting these diverse fields is involutions. Group-theoretic results in the latter domain may lead to insight about the dynamics in the former, and vice-versa. In this article, we highlight some central themes and common structures, and discuss novel approaches to some open and open-ended problems. We introduce the state automaton of an ACA, and show how the root automaton of a Coxeter group is essentially part of the state automaton of a related ACA.

The Clinical Utility Of The Conners' Continuous Performance Test In The Evaluation Of Youth With Conduct Disorder, Stephanie Raszkiewicz

The purpose of this study was to investigate neuropsychological factors related to performance on the Conners' Continuous Performance Test, Second Edition (CPT-II) among youth who met criteria for Conduct Disorder when compared to a control group of youth who did not meet criteria for Conduct Disorder (CD). The CPT-II is an instrument commonly used to assess for the presence of ADHD. Since research has shown a strong co-occurrence of CD with ADHD, with some authors reporting it to be as high as 90%, it was important to examine how a group of youth with CD would perform on this instrument …

There are at least two challenges with quality management of service-oriented architecture based web service systems: 1) how to link its technical capabilities with customer's needs explicitly to satisfy customers' functional and nonfunctional requirements; and 2) how to determine targets of web service design attributes. Currently, the first issue is not addressed and the second one is dealt with subjectively. Quality Function Deployment (QFD), a quality management system, has found its success in improving quality of complex products although it has not been used for developing web service systems.
