User Education And Information Literacy In Agricultural Universities Of India, Neena Singh
User Education And Information Literacy In Agricultural Universities Of India, Neena Singh
Communications in Information Literacy
Twenty-six of the agricultural universities in India teach user education and information literacy (IL). This article evaluates these courses and investigates if and how the course curriculum blends research and technical writing skills effectively. Unfortunately, the courses lack uniformity in teaching IL and technical writing skills. Since the universities are under state government control, they are unable to provide uniform curricula throughout India. There is also a need for a credited course on IL, integrating ICT and computer skills, and another course for research and technical writing.

A Predictive Model For Secondary Rna Structure Using Graph Theory And A Neural Network, Denise R. Koessler, Debra J. Knisley, Jeff Knisley, Teresa Haynes
ETSU Faculty Works
Background: Determining the secondary structure of RNA from the primary structure is a challenging computational problem. A number of algorithms have been developed to predict the secondary structure from the primary structure. It is agreed that there is still room for improvement in each of these approaches. In this work we build a predictive model for secondary RNA structure using a graph-theoretic tree representation of secondary RNA structure. We model the bonding of two RNA secondary structures to form a larger secondary structure with a graph operation we call merge. We consider all combinatorial possibilities using all possible tree inputs, …

Dynamics Of Protofibril Elongation And Association Involved In Aβ42 Peptide Aggregation In Alzheimer's Disease, Preetam Ghosh, Amit Kumar, Bhaswati Datta, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari
Faculty Publications
Background: The aggregates of a protein called, ‘Aβ’ found in brains of Alzheimer’s patients are strongly believed to be the cause for neuronal death and cognitive decline. Among the different forms of Aβ aggregates, smaller aggregates called ‘soluble oligomers’ are increasingly believed to be the primary neurotoxic species responsible for early synaptic dysfunction. Since it is well known that the Aβ aggregation is a nucleation dependant process, it is widely believed that the toxic oligomers are intermediates to fibril formation, or what we call the ‘on-pathway’ products. Modeling of Aβ aggregation has been of intense investigation during the last …

Scoring Function To Predict Solubility Mutagenesis, Ye Tian, Christopher Deutsch, Bala Krishnamoorthy
Scoring Function To Predict Solubility Mutagenesis, Ye Tian, Christopher Deutsch, Bala Krishnamoorthy
Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations
Background: Mutagenesis is commonly used to engineer proteins with desirable properties not present in the wild type (WT) protein, such as increased or decreased stability, reactivity, or solubility. Experimentalists often have to choose a small subset of mutations from a large number of candidates to obtain the desired change, and computational techniques are invaluable to make the choices. While several such methods have been proposed to predict stability and reactivity mutagenesis, solubility has not received much attention. Results: We use concepts from computational geometry to define a three body scoring function that predicts the change in protein solubility due to …
Making A Cantonese-Christian Family: Quotidian Habits Of Language And Background In A Transnational Hongkonger Church, Justin K. H. Tse
Making A Cantonese-Christian Family: Quotidian Habits Of Language And Background In A Transnational Hongkonger Church, Justin K. H. Tse
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Studies of the Hong Kong‐Vancouver transnational migration network seldom pay close attention to religion in the everyday lives of Hongkonger migrants. Based on 9 months of ethnographic fieldwork at St. Matthew's Church, a Hong Kong church in Metro Vancouver, this paper examines the tacit assumptions and taken‐for‐granted quotidian practices through which a Hongkonger church is made. I argue that St. Matthew's Church has been constructed as a Hong Kong Cantonese‐Christian family space through the everyday use of language and invocations of a common educational background. This argument extends the literature on Hongkonger migration to Metro Vancouver by grounding it in …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: The p53 protein family coordinates stress responses of cells and organisms. Alternative promoter usage and/or splicing of p53 mRNA gives rise to at least nine mammalian p53 proteins with distinct N- and C-termini which are differentially expressed in normal and malignant cells. The human N-terminal p53 variants contain either the full-length (FL), or a truncated (ΔN/Δ40) or no transactivation domain (Δ133) altogether. The functional consequences of coexpression of the different p53 isoforms are poorly defined. Here we investigated functional aspects of the zebrafish ΔNp53 ortholog in the context of FLp53 and the zebrafish Δ133p53 ortholog (Δ113p53) coexpressed in the …

Phylometrics: A Pipeline For Inferring Phylogenetic Trees From A Sequence Relationship Network Perspective, Samuel A. Smits, Cleber C. Ouverney
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
Background
Comparative sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene is frequently used to characterize the microbial diversity of environmental samples. However, sequence similarities do not always imply functional or evolutionary relatedness due to many factors, including unequal rates of change and convergence. Thus, relying on top BLASTN hits for phylogenetic studies may misrepresent the diversity of these constituents. Furthermore, attempts to circumvent this issue by including a large number of BLASTN hits per sequence in one tree to explore their relatedness presents other problems. For instance, the multiple sequence alignment will be poor and computationally costly if not relying on …

Background: A number of models and algorithms have been proposed in the past for gene regulatory network (GRN) inference; however, none of them address the effects of the size of time-series microarray expression data in terms of the number of time-points. In this paper, we study this problem by analyzing the behaviour of three algorithms based on information theory and dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) models. These algorithms were implemented on different sizes of data generated by synthetic networks. Experiments show that the inference accuracy of these algorithms reaches a saturation point after a specific data size brought about by …

A Novel Method For Evaluating The Release Of Fermentable Sugars From Cellulosic Biomass, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Gina Fake, Jennifer Carroll, Elizabeth Hood, John Howard
Dairy Science
Efficient hydrolysis of cellulosic biomass into free sugars for the production of bioethanol would allow utilization of an abundant and renewable natural resource. However, complex microcrystalline cellulose in biomass resists digestion. A preferred method to deconstruct cellulose is using enzyme cocktails, but the presence of multiple enzymes with synergistic outcomes for this process complicates direct biochemical analysis as a reliable indicator of deconstruction. Methods to detect release of free sugars rather than direct measurement of enzymatic activity are available but are time-consuming, and do not reflect the production of metabolic inhibitors of microbial growth which may interfere with the subsequent …
Characterization Of D-Aspartate Receptor Currents In Aplysia Californica, Stephen L. Carlson
Characterization Of D-Aspartate Receptor Currents In Aplysia Californica, Stephen L. Carlson
Open Access Dissertations
D-Aspartate (D-Asp) is an endogenous compound found in the central nervous system (CNS) of a variety of organisms. Despite its prevalence, however, relatively little understood of its physiological role. The prevailing theory is that D-Asp is an alternate agonist of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) channels. The goal of this work was to characterize the currents activated by D-Asp in neurons Aplysia californica, focusing on cells of the buccal S cluster (BSC). First, a general electrophysiological characterization was carried out, examining ion permeability, agonist dose-response, and the kinetics of activation, inactivation, and desensitization. D-Asp activated non-specific cation currents characterized by permeability to …
Inputs And Biogeochemical Impacts Of Nutrient Deposition On The Subtropical North Atlantic, Lauren M. Zamora
Inputs And Biogeochemical Impacts Of Nutrient Deposition On The Subtropical North Atlantic, Lauren M. Zamora
Open Access Dissertations
Atmospheric nitrogen deposition to the ocean has more than doubled in the past 150 years due to anthropogenic activity, reaching levels comparable with nitrogen fixation in the subtropical North Atlantic. Previous studies have suggested that atmospherically deposited N may increase export production, decrease surface water phosphate levels, and substantially impact geochemical estimates of nitrogen fixation. This dissertation reports on the magnitude and biogeochemical fate of soluble N and P deposition in the subtropical North Atlantic. Aerosol and wet deposition time-series samples were used to determine the fluxes, sources, and N:P ratios of atmospheric nutrient deposition. Based on the magnitudes of …

Theoretical Studies Of Structure-Function Relationships In Kv Channels: Electrostatics Of The Voltage Sensor, Alexander Peyser
Open Access Dissertations
Voltage-gated ion channels mediate electrical excitability of cellular membranes. Re- duced models of the voltage sensor (VS) of Kv channels produce insight into the electrostatic physics underlying the response of the highly positively charged S4 transmembrane domain to changes in membrane potential and other electrostatic parameters. By calculating the partition function computed from the electrostatic energy over translational and/or rotational degrees of freedom, I compute expectations of charge displacement, energetics, probability distributions of translation & rotation and Maxwell stress for arrangements of S4 positively charged residues and S2 & S3 negatively charged counter-charges; these computations can then be compared with …

Electronic Structure Based Classification Of Neurotransmitters And Related Drugs, Amrita Jha
Electronic Structure Based Classification Of Neurotransmitters And Related Drugs, Amrita Jha
Theses and Dissertations
A fundamental understanding of the relationship between structure and activity of neurotransmitters in the human brain is of vital importance for the design targeted drugs. Using density functional theory and hybrid exchange correlation energy functionals we have studied the structure-activity-relationships of some important neurotransmitters and selected drugs by calculating their absolute hardness (η) and absolute electronegativity (χ). A plot of the η- χ diagram allowed us to assign them into three distinct groups, namely, (i) Acetylcholine analogs (positively charged structure), (ii) GABA analogs (zwitterionic structures) and (iii) monoamines. The results suggest that brain stem is chemically soft because of distribution …
